Are there really exoplanets with where it rains ruby and emerald raindrops? How do we measure the atmospheres of exoplanets light years away? To find out, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu welcome Dr. Munazza Alam of the Space Telescope Science Institute. The STScI performs science operations for the Hubble Space Telescope, the James Webb Space Telescope, and the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope when it launches in 2026. As always, though, we start off with the day's joyfully cool cosmic thing. On Feb 24, 2026, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory activated the alert system it will use to notify astronomers of noteworthy events and sent out 800,000 alerts on that single day! Munazza tells us about how she studies the atmospheres of exoplanets like Wasp 121-b, a gas giant thought to have ruby and sapphire rain. Dr. Alam describes exoplanets with surface oceans made of magma, and she and Chuck talk about the importance of plate tectonics. You'll hear about Hot Jupiters, Super-Earths, and Sub-Neptunes – and the theories about why we don't have any of them in our solar system despite the fact that they're incredibly common in the Milky Way galaxy. Then it's time for audience questions, which for this episode come from students at Notre Dame Academy on Staten Island, where Munazza is an alum. Not only does past guest Dr. Betty Jensen teach there, as well, but she was a critical influence on Munazza's career path. (You can listen to our episode with Dr. Jensen here.) The first question is from Charlotte, who asks, “How far have we gone in space?” Munazza, Allen, and Chuck discuss Voyager 1, which at a current distance of nearly 16 billion miles is the man-made object that has gone furthest from Earth. Next up, Gabby asks, “What was the best advice you were given when you were preparing for college?” Dr. Alam's answer: Pick something you enjoy and are good at - in spite of any pressure you might get from friends, family, and others. A second piece of advice Munazza got was to maintain your breadth, i.e., developing other interests besides your primary focus. For Munazza, that was art and writing, and she shares some of her art later in the show. Finally, Gisella asks if it was hard picking a college. Dr. Alam shares her process, with the caveat that it might not be good advice for everyone. Charles and Munazza reflect on the tradition of scientific exploration, observation, discovery and analysis of which she's part. Munazza recounts the excitement when JWST observations of transmission spectra of the exoplanet Wasp 39b confirmed their predictions – and also detected something unexpected: sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere of the planet which is a by-product of photochemistry between light from its star and water molecules in the atmosphere of the planet. Finally, Chuck asks Munazza to share some of her art. She shows us one of the first paintings she ever did, a peacock, and tells us a little about it and a portrait she has displayed at the Lowell Observatory. If you'd like to know more about what Dr. Alam is up to, you can follower her on LinkedIn or visit her website . Our Lang Fairy Tale for today is another Madame d'Aulnoy story, Princess Rosette. Also known in some places as The King of the Peacocks or The Black and the White Bride, it's packed full of whimsy, but what is it actually about? We get lists of fun foods and wonderful creatures, sojourn with side characters with nothing to do, and end up with a kind of take on The Goose Girl.Considering d'Aulnoy is most known for writing fairy tales for adults, and coined the term 'Fairy Tale' in the first place, perhaps she knew better what ought to go into one. Then again, should you lock your children up in towers for all their lives? Or impulsively decide to marry a ruler of birds? Also, what the heck is a cockchafer?!If you are unfamiliar with the Lang Fairy Tales, these seminal collections were assembled between 1889 and 1913 by a married couple, folklorists and translators Nora and Andrew Lang, with most of the work done to compile them completed by Nora, also known as Leonora Blanche Alleyne.Assembled and published in 12 colour-coded "Fairy Books," the corpus the Langs put together included 798 fairy tales from across cultures, many of which had never before been translated into English. They were amongst the most influential books of their time, changing the course of children's literature - although they're hardly just for children, and often deal with quite challenging concepts.Today, purchasing a complete set of the Lang Fairy Books in good condition costs over £4,000 ($5,000+).Thankfully, the collections are all out of copyright, meaning that we can now tell these stories, in podcast form, many for the first time, and share them with a global audience, for free. Our plan is to release the stories between main series of Three Ravens, performing them straight (though with plenty of silly voices) letting the tales speak for themselves in all their madcap, sharp-edged, often quite bizarre glory. The only edits we have made are to amend some culturally-insensitive epithets, which typically pertain to ethnicity, with any such edits made by Eleanor Conlon.Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?REGISTER FOR THE TALES OF SOUTHERN ENGLAND TOURVisit our website Join our Patreon Social media channels and sponsors Hosted on Acast. Peacocks want to be admired.Parrots repeat only what they have heard. Each of us has a little bit of Peacock in us, and perhaps a little Parrot, too.(I admit it about me. You should admit it about you.)Long ago I saw a movie in which an old Greek man says to a much younger man from England,“A wise old Turk once told me…”The young Englishman interrupts him and says,“What! A wise old Turk? I thought the Greeks and Turks hated each other.”The old Greek sighs, then says,“When I was young, I believed that there were only two kinds of people; Greeks who were good, and Turks who were bad. Then one day I met a good Turk. So I decided there were only two kinds of people; good people and bad people.”The Greek then looks into the eyes of the Englishman and says,“Now I believe there are just people.”On September 18th, I transcribed a single paragraph of an essay about the death of Charlie Kirk and posted it in my random quotes database:“After every mass shooting, after every fresh example of political violence, after every round of one side recriminating the other side for not holding up their end of the social contract, we need to hear what is right, what is true, what is good. That need is why we commit to memory lines of poetry, passages of literature, and—for religious believers—particular verses. Because when crisis arrives and the world presses in on us, we must work to remember what we're about and what we hold to. Sometimes those things hold us more than we hold them, but only when we know them in our bones. So we keep telling ourselves, and each other, what is true and good.”“We should be telling each other this week to weep with those who weep.”– Nick Catoggio, Sept 18, 2025I have captured 7,761 quotes over the past 25 years. More than half of those were transcribed from novels, movies, television shows, emails and texts. About 10 percent of them are things I have written or said or thought or prayed; things that I wanted to archive somewhere lest I forget them. The rest of them are comical quips, well-worded witticisms, and profound thoughts uttered by friends and acquaintances that I quickly scribbled down. The Random Quotes database is off-site storage of ideas that I can access from anywhere in the world. You can access it, too. A new random quote will appear each time you refresh the page at MondayMorningMemo.com.I am writing this to you on September 22, 2025. The newest quote in the database is a text that was sent by Jeffrey Eisenberg to Tom Grimes and me just a few minutes ago. It says,“It's my custom on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, to reach out and ask forgiveness from my friends. The holiday is a time for reflection, fresh starts, and making peace. By asking forgiveness, I'm acknowledging that I might have hurt someone—whether knowingly or not—and I don't want to carry that into the new year.”“So if I've said or done anything that hurt or upset you, I sincerely ask your forgiveness.”– Jeffrey EisenbergI responded,“And we thank you for forgiving us, too. Especially Tom.” – RHWJeffrey sent a laugh emoji. Tom will laugh when he sees what I wrote. In truth, I have long admired Jeffrey's tradition of calling his friends each year or sending us a text. It is a marvelous reminder that mutual forgiveness is essential to keeping relationships alive and healthy. Can you imagine what it would do for our country right now?Roy H. "Have you ever seen a peacock? It's a strutting parade. He's popping his feathers...all territorial...marking their boundaries. He makes noise, trying to get attention. And they might shine, but he mostly makes a mess and disturbs the neighbors. A peacock is so noisy because it can't sing. It shows off its feathers because it has no other redeeming qualities. A peacock struts because it can't fly. It will never fly - nor will anyone of the human species who seeks their own exaltation. "In God's economy the strivers, hustlers, ego-maniacs, and peacocks all end up on the bottom, while the humble will ultimately rise to the top. 'For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted,' Jesus says (Luke 14)." "And yes, I know this is counter-intuitive to the way it is. This is a loud, strutting, peacock world, with so many flaunting around with their feathers of self-importance and entitlement. Nice guys and nice gals finish last, and those with ruthless ambition finish first. But, finishing last is the point. 'The first shall be last; the last shall be first; for those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.'"

Send us a textTRIGGER WARNING-  For those of you who do not know, this case involves the death of a beautiful, smart, precious, not even 3 year old little girl, and her piece of trash narcissistic egg donor; Casey Anthony. This episode is kinda of, filled with a fair amount of rage...I am angry at the jury, I do not like Jose Baez, and I hate Casey Anthony.  Even, just writing up the description for this episode, evoked a rage in me.  So, if you are one of those folks who send us emails, about not liking the swearing in the pod.... this may not be a good one for you. I did the best I could, considering the demon that I am speaking about. In 2008- 22 year old Casey Marie Anthony, made headlines, after authorities learned that her, nearly 3 year old daughter Caylee had been missing for 31 days. According to Casey, Caylee had been taken by her nanny of- between 1.5-2 years; Zenaida Fernadez Gonzalez.  Casey would say that Zenaida, or 'Zanny the nanny' as she would come to be known, would tell Casey that she does not appreciate what she has, leading Casey to believe, that she had taken her daughter, to teach Casey a lesson, for being a bad mom......... but there was only one problem with that........  just kidding, there is literally 50 problems with that!  Casey lies about absolutely EVERYTHING, but never thinks past the initial lie!!So, why in 2011 was she acquitted of 1st degree murder, aggravated child abuse, and aggravated manslaughter??  enter: Jose Baez- a new criminal defence attorney.  Had only been an attorney for about 5 years at the time that Casey's trial took place.  And, don't worry, I read his book: PRESUMED GUILTY, so that you don't have to.There is no denying Jose is great at what he does.  Right away, he will show the jury everything that the prosecution is going to show them, trying to get a conviction,  and he will down play all of it.  He also plants a different idea of something that COULD have happened, regardless of if he pulled that theory straight out of his ass or not.. and it didn't hurt that they had to pick a jury of 12 people who hadn't watched or read the news, or flipped through a magazine in 3 years...  they wanted jurors, who did not have a preconceived notion on Casey's guilt or innocence  (IMO- idiots.  but what do I know...)We will also go through the most recent documentaries; Peacocks 3 part interview with Casey herself...  what a smouldering heap of trash that was.And even more recently, George and Cindy (Casey's parents) in 2024, watched and responded to the Peacock documentary, and Cindy finally has some hard hitting words Casey. Both part of this will be available right away on our patreon,  but if you need a breather between them, part 2 will be up next Tuesday.Support the showIf you're interested in receiving bonus episodes, early release dates, an everything scary sticker and ‘thank you' as well as a shout out on our regular feed! Mark Clavey sent this picture right after St Patrick's Day 2024: “Hi Marc! Here's our write - up for how we spent St Pat's at O'Malley's Pub... and a few pictures... "There was more March Madness for the band this past Sunday as we celebrated the Day of the Festival of St Patrick with a noon - performance at O'Malley's Pub(Episode 136). The day started around 10:00a as the band started straggling in and setting up. It was a brisk 40° when we loaded in, and would reach a balmy 48° when we loaded out at 4:30. Early - birds had already formed a line by 10:30 – despite the fact that the Pub wouldn't open until 11:30. (This plan was well - advised given the epic proportions of Snake Saturday's one - person - out/one - person - in crowd.) By the time the band started playing at noon, the bar was full and the crowd lively – being more vocal for the sing - alongs than they were for the toasts. There was a larger - than - usual number of Tullamore - fans than is typical for St Patrick's Day (as it was at lunchtime on a Sunday rather than a workday). Shout - outs to Mike, Amy, Anna, and Jason; Ray and Carrie; Eric and Dena; Eric, Linda, and Eleanor; Trey; Connie, Brandie and Rhonda; Shannon; Rob and Mitch; Andrew; Lisa, Craig, Ed, and Mary; Mikayla; and Jenn. Mark successfully navigated the afternoon notwithstanding the return of his chest - supercold (that knocked him out of the February weekend) and having sliced up the index - finger on his strumming hand. (Evidently, while holding a pick between the thumb and the bird - finger is a doable thing, it DOES produce a Charlie - horse at the base of the thumb when you do it for three hours straight.) Said navigation was aided with the Black Bush providing the kind of lubrication that makes your engine tick. We played until 3:30 before turning the stage over to The Kelihans – who would, in turn, hand off the stage to Chance the Arm at 8:00p. In the meantime, Ryan Rancudo and Bob Reeder handled the St Patrick's Day festivities for the audience in the upper cellar. Overall, it was a great afternoon and (we're assuming) a great night as well. (Photos courtesy of Amy Cripe, Mike Moran, and Mary Hanover.)" Best, - Mark”
