A Fine Gael Senator and bye-election candidate has said that it is unacceptable that Galway has no accommodation for individuals and families leaving crisis situations. Senator Seán Kyne said that there are 10 refuge units, but no transitional accommodation for families who need a safe place to rebuild their lives. Senator Kyne said while the investment has led to new refuge and Safe Home units across the country, Galway remains without a single unit, leaving survivors with no supported accommodation options once they leave emergency refuge. Safe Home units provide medium-term, supported accommodation for individuals and families leaving crisis situations and are a core pillar of the State's Zero Tolerance Strategy to Domestic, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence and are designed to stop survivors from being forced back into unsafe environments. Speaking to Galway Bay FM News, Senator Kyne said it is important that every support possible is made available by the Government.

Episode #338: “[The quake] revealed the tragic disconnect between the government's understanding—or perhaps, willingness to communicate—the severity of the disaster and the actual level of risk facing the population.”In a compelling analysis, Professor Dean Kyne critiques Myanmar's disaster management, highlighting how decades of military rule have prioritized authoritarian control over public welfare. He illustrates this with the 2008 Cyclone Nargis, when the junta ignored early warnings and downplayed the storm to proceed with a constitutional referendum ... and over 138,000 people died.Kyne argues that instead of learning from this tragedy, the regime has doubled down, now weaponizing disaster response. Following the recent earthquake, search and rescue was blocked, aid was withheld, and military authorities even prevented international teams from entering. Humanitarian responder Kiran Verma, for instance, was stopped at gunpoint. “This wasn't logistical failure,” Kyne says, “it was humanitarian suppression under authoritarian rule.” He notes that corruption further undermines aid distribution: local junta-aligned leaders steal and resell aid. Worse, young male relief volunteers are reportedly being forcibly recruited, and legitimate aid workers face harassment from pro-junta paramilitaries.Kyne proposes a three-part framework for international response: pragmatic, political, and moral. He urges aid agencies to bypass the junta, work through opposition-held zones, and commit to long-term recovery. Community resilience, he emphasizes, can start with education alone—empowering locals through training and digital platforms.He closes with a message of solidarity: “To the people in Myanmar, you have to be very strong. And for the international community members, please continue with what you have been doing, and please support the affected individuals.”

I spoke to Thomas Heremans, CEO of the Obol Association. Through his recently released book and viral TikTok videos, he uses drag as an avenue for making math more approachable and fun for everyone. Whether you consider yourself good at math, “bad with numbers” or anything in between, Kyne is here to broaden your mindset and help you to embrace the beautiful possibilities of both math and drag.  When we are little, people decide pretty quickly to put us into the math/science box or the creative/arts box. The truth is so much more nuanced than that, with math applying to every creative pursuit you can think of. Even songwriters are doing math every single time they write a note on a page. Math in itself is a creative puzzle solving tool and when embraced can open a whole new world of possibilities. What we learn in K-12 is usually just the basic tools of math and it is a shame that learning seems to stop right before getting to the more creative applications. Math and creativity do not have to be kept in separate boxes, and Kyne's book and videos show that there are ways to approach math that are much more relatable and fun.  We talk with Kyne about both math and gender as social constructs, the economics of being a contestant on Drag Race through the lens of Game Theory, how math is used in music (sound engineering, anybody?), and the importance of keeping an open mind about math and drag alike.  Kyne's book, Math In Drag, is available now (and the audiobook is coming soon!). It's a common refrain from elementary school to adulthood: “I'm bad at math.” It's a hard subject for a lot of people, and it has a reputation for being—let's face it—boring.
