Fostering leadership growth in our listeners by revisiting some of the powerful moments from 2022 What is this episode all about? We decided to do something a little bit different this week. At the time of publishing, it's currently the festive season, and many of our guests will be going about their lives spending time with their families. We felt like this is a good time to reflect on the show's impact on 2022, taking in the fact we released the 100th episode a few months ago. Choosing 13 past guests to revisit specific leadership lessons that we hope will empower listeners It goes without saying we've immensely enjoyed speaking with ALL of our guests since we started this podcast. But I wanted to check back in with 13 of the guests from this past year, to refresh our memories on their lessons. Particularly as this is a time of year that many people use to reflect and refocus, ahead of working towards goals for the coming year. Understanding the importance of good, solid leadership Good leadership is important because it can have a significant impact on the success and effectiveness of a team or organisation. When leaders are competent, fair, and supportive, they can create a positive and productive work environment that fosters collaboration, innovation, and growth. On the other hand, poor leadership can lead to a toxic culture, low morale, and poor performance. Episode clips that we feel back up this point We obviously couldn't include everybody that we'd like to for a revisit, or we'd be releasing an episode that would take almost three solid days of continuous listening to get through. In today's episode, we bring you two conversations with two key leaders in sport around the importance of measuring progress and implementing change in the ED&I Landscape. Leaders in EDI is a monthly series covering news, views, comments and debates happening across the equality, diversity and inclusion space. It also shines a spotlight on the progress being made and the challenges being faced in EDI across sport. Our first conversation, beginning at 08:40, is with Leaders' Managing Director Laura McQueen and Nielsen Sports' Head of Brands, Lynsey Douglas. The focal point of the discussion was the survey that Leaders ran in collaboration with Nielsen in order to benchmark where members of the Leaders Meet: Diversity series feel we are in the EDI space. The pair cover key statistics from the survey findings and what changes we can make to ensure even better results over the coming year, and take the opportunity to discuss having ambition to drive change, the importance of having an inclusive work environment as we return to the office space, and the key approach to joining a community.   At 21:15, we then move to a guest interview with Leon Mann, an entrepreneur, activist, broadcaster, filmmaker and founder of sports consultancy and production company, Refresh Sport. This conversation expanded on the theme of change, with a focus given to the distinction between short-term change and long-term reform. Within it, Mann offers his valuable insight on reflecting on your own biases, holding leaders accountable, and how taking action in the diversity space will maximise the performance of your business.  The Leaders in EDI podcast is part of the Leaders Meet: Diversity Series, delivered in partnership with Meta, which provides a platform for executives within sport to come together to drive diversity across the industry, accelerate the pace of change and inspire the next generation of executives, through thought-leadership events and digital forums. Leon also co-founded the Black Collective of Media in Sport (BCOMS) which is designed to be the first port of call for existing and burgeoning black professionals in the sports media. The conversation covered Leon's work trying to make various aspects of football more inclusive from coaching to club administration to the media. We discuss the problems he still sees as being significant, what progress has and hasn't been made, the benefits of a more diverse and inclusive environment and what we can all do to help achieve that. Trophies, what are they good for? Absolutely nothing. Well, not quite, but they're certainly not the be-all and end-all of being a Tottenham fan as far as Leon Mann is concerned. Leon is a broadcaster, film maker, campaigner and, as Sachin knows from personal experience, a truly lovely person, and he speaks with typical intelligence and warmth about his 30-plus years supporting Spurs. It's not been easy given the club's relative lack of success but, overall, Leon has loved following the club, and especially because of the players he's seen. Waddle. Lineker. Gascoigne. Klinsmann. Bale. Just some of the superstar footballers who have brought Leon joy from childhood to adulthood and in their own ways made up for a dearth of silverware. He speaks about them all, with one man picked out for particular special mention – Gazza. Leon was there when he scored THAT free-kick against Arsenal at Wembley as well as for when he suffered THAT injury against Nottingham Forest and reflects on how those moments sum up a flawed genius. Leon also reflects on the time Gazza nearly ran him over. There's also a chat about the poignant circumstances surrounding Leon's first trip to White Hart Lane, as well as about the pros and cons of Daniel Levy's 20-year chairmanship of Spurs. And before all of that, Leon discusses his long-standing efforts to improve ethnic diversity in UK sports media, for which he was rightly awarded an MBE earlier this year. Leon also talks through his all-time Tottenham XI, which contains a truly controversial selection, and gives an answer to the final question that Sachin simply can't accept. So download, listen and love. And after you have, please Rate and Review. It would mean a lot. Cheers!

Black excellence in Football. Sunday hurt... The England men's football team missed out on becoming European Champions after losing to Italy. Despite the team's historic performance Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka got loads of racist abuse online for missing their penalties. Now, it kinda feels like the country is standing up to racism. This week De-Graft visits the Marcus Rashford mural in Manchester, which was defaced after the Euro final. We celebrate the success of the Black English players with Black sports journalist, Leon Mann, and we speak to grime artist, Saskilla, about what the FA is doing to tackle racism in football. Clips credit goes to Century Films who helped produce Saskilla's doc for BBC3: "Do Black Lives Still Matter?" Leon Mann is this week’s guest on Greatest Games, joining Jonathan Wilson and Marcus Speller to remember the 1991 FA Cup semi-final North London Derby between Terry Venables’ Tottenham and George Graham’s Arsenal. Rather than traipsing the sides up to the midlands, the tie became the first-ever FA Cup semi-final to be hosted at Wembley. This meant a first Wembley trip for Leon and a grand setting to further encourage Mr Paul Gascoigne for the occasion. What followed was a clash of styles between two cherished managers and one of the great semi-final performances.  About the panel: Jonathan Wilson founded The Blizzard in 2011 and is editor of the magazine. He’s contributed to a number of publications including the Guardian and Sports Illustrated as well as having authored  Behind the Curtain, Inverting the Pyramid, The Outsider, Angels with Dirty Faces and most recently The Names Heard Long Ago, among others.  Marcus Speller is a host of the Football Ramble podcast as well as Answerable Questions with Questionable Answers. Marcus also regularly hosts our live Q&A events across the country alongside Jonathan.
