Karan and Roshan's real-life romance inspired their film A Nice Indian Boy, and the success of the Hollywood/Bollywood romcom has healed many family rifts on the way.Karan Soni is an Indian actor famous for playing supporting roles in films like Deadpool & Wolverine. He had moved to the US for college before becoming an actor, but, despite coming out in his teens, felt he had to keep his sexuality a secret to make it in Hollywood. Roshan Sethi is a Canadian oncologist and scriptwriter from an Indian family, who didn't come out till the age of 30. But when the pair met through an online dating app, things began to change. They ended up making a Hollywood/Bollywood-inspired romcom that closely resembled their own story – about a gay Indian-American doctor finding love. Karan is in the lead role, alongside musical theatre star Jonathan Groff, and Roshan is directing. Making this film, and sharing it with their families, has helped to address some of the issues both Karan and Roshan experienced as gay men from South Asian communities. This story was first on BBC World Service radio last year - when the Lives Less Ordinary team decided to create the Love Stories season, we knew we had to include it!Presenter: Sophia Smith Galer Producer: Helen FitzhenryLives Less Ordinary is a podcast from the BBC World Service that brings you the most incredible true stories from around the world. Send Wilk a text with your feedback! (incoming msgs only - I can't reply) Roshan Bliss has spent his career working the space between people who disagree — first as a mediator, then as a public deliberation practitioner, and now as the architect of one of the more ambitious bridging projects out there: a reality TV show called A House Divided.Roshan and Wilk dig into the idea of “many-to-many” conflict — why the tools that help two neighbors resolve a dispute fall short when it's millions of people who disagree — and why defining the problem has to come before anyone starts arguing about the solution. Then they get into the show itself: three groups, one from the left, right, and center, locked in a house for seven days, working through a real cultural flashpoint from a real American community — think Big Brother meets jury duty, built entirely around deliberation instead of drama. It's a conversation about taking the tools of dialogue and deliberation out of the conference room and putting them somewhere people will actually watch — and why that might be exactly what's needed to compete for attention in a media landscape built on outrage. We've forgotten what it feels like to have a real conversation. The week of August 10th, join AllSides for a live conversation about the American Dream — how we're thinking about it and navigating the challenges.Your insights will be anonymized and included in a report to help leaders better understand how people see this issue.Sign up today at allsides.com/derate-hate The world is a better place if we are better people. This week on Radio Reversal, join Marissa and Roshan as they remember the fight for Kurilpa Commons - a beloved community space in Brisbane's West End on the Kurilpa peninsular, which has been carefully tended by a collective of (human and more-than-human) gardeners, composters, growers, gatherers and organisers for almost five years. They reflect on the closure of the commons as part of a much longer ongoing struggle against greedy developers, corporate goons and the colonial state - and think about what these spaces (and the fight to protect them) can teach us about being human in this time and place.

1985: Rajiv Gandhi says 15 paise of every rupee actually reaches the poor. 2009: Rahul Gandhi puts the number at 5%. Twenty-four years apart, same party, and by their own accounting the leak had got worse. That pair of numbers is where this conversation lands in its final minutes, and Tuhin A. Sinha uses it to make a much larger argument: that the question of who is anti-youth in Indian politics has a fairly specific answer, and it isn't the one the Opposition has been giving. Roshan Cariappa sits down with Tuhin - BJP National Spokesperson and author of 14 books - days before a Monsoon Session that Tuhin calls the most consequential in a very long time. Two bills are on the table: delimitation and women's reservation. His case for why delimitation is the youth story nobody is telling: the last exercise was in 1975. India now has roughly 97 crore voters and 543 Lok Sabha seats, which means each MP represents about 17 lakh people - the highest ratio anywhere in the world. Raise the seat count by 50% and that falls to around 11 lakh. But the number Tuhin cares about is the other one: hundreds of new constituencies means hundreds of openings for people who do not come from political families. Which is precisely, he argues, why the dynastic parties are petrified of it. Roshan also asks the question currently nation wants to know - the mistrust around engineered defections, the ED and CBI asymmetry, the "washing machine" charge, whether the BJP can still call itself a party with a difference while absorbing MPs it once called corrupt, and whether all of this is legal in letter but hollow in spirit. Tuhin's answers are direct, and on the corruption question notably unsqueamish: sometimes to achieve a good objective, you take a path that isn't impeccable. Also in here: why the two bills are deliberately being moved together, how 74 women MPs could become 273 seats, why the April bill fell 54 votes short, Amit Shah's one-hour challenge across the floor of the House, the North-South penalty argument, Vajpayee's 1996 resignation speech, and what 2029 actually gets fought on. Whether you find him persuasive or want to argue with every second answer, it's a sharper 41 minutes than a TV panel gives you in a month. ⏱️ TIMESTAMPS (00:00) - Reconnecting (00:35) - Why this Monsoon Session is the most consequential in years (01:08) - Delimitation explained: 1975, 97 crore voters, 17 lakh per MP (02:27) - "A once-in-a-lifetime opening for youth who aren't from political families" (03:13) - Why delimitation and women's reservation are being moved together (04:45) - Falling 54 votes short in April, and what has changed since (06:24) - Amit Shah's one-hour challenge across the floor (07:11) - Why dynastic parties fear a bigger, younger Lok Sabha (08:54) - The North-South question: are southern states being penalised? (10:33) - Women's representation: from 74 MPs to 273 seats (13:55) - Roshan steelmans the Opposition: the defections problem (17:54) - The "washing machine" charge, and Tuhin's reversal of it (18:38) - "Is the BJP still a party with a difference?" (22:44) - The anti-defection law: conscience vs. the whip (26:28) - Congress Mukt Bharat, or Opposition Mukt Bharat? Radiation oncologist and director Roshan Sethi: confidence in medicine is mostly performance. The book club is back, and M2s Anna Royer, Ellie Johnson, and Sofia Hueser, and M4 Alex Nigg all crowd around to grill an actual Hollywood director about his debut novel. Somewhere in Roshan Sethi‘s frontal lobe is a cyst, and it’s possibly why he is a reformed gunner, Hollywood writer/director, still radiation oncologist, and now novelist. Sethi is co-creator of Fox’s The Resident, and author of The Simp: A Novel Without a Hero, a new book built out of a viral job ad so horrifying nobody would claim authorship of it. What does it mean that Raj, the novel’s desperate, self-aware sycophant of a protagonist, reads less like a Hollywood assistant and more like a third-year on rotations? Sethi doesn’t dodge the comparison—he wrote most of Raj’s obliging, invisible, gunner-brained misery straight out of his own decade in medicine. Sethi describes himself, pre-Hollywood, as ruthless enough to publish 15 papers in a single year for a career he’s since walked mostly away from–he still practices 9 weeks a year–and he does the math on what staying in medicine actually cost him: when The Resident got greenlit for a sixth season and syndication, he’d already turned the show down to finish residency, a decision one producer later priced at $12 million. Sethi traces a lot of that old ambition back to being closeted through college and medical school; the striving, he says, was never really about medicine, and coming out took most of the edge off it. Also, what happens to a person’s personality over four years of medical school? Sethi’s answer: it gets slowly closeted right along with everything else, trained out of you until invisibility reads as professionalism. He tells the room the worst response to getting pimped isn’t “I don’t know”—it’s saying it apologetically, like you owe someone an explanation for not yet knowing something nobody expects you to know. Speaking of things that require confidence you don’t actually have: Sethi’s next film, The Surgeon, stars Michelle Yeoh as a retired surgeon taken hostage and forced to operate. Dave can’t wait. He even pitched Sethi on his own idea for a movie that’s not at all derivative, and though it will probably star Mark Ruffalo, Dave is available. On representation, Sethi draws a sharp line between his two industries. Medicine has become more female and more Indian, Asian, and Nigerian over time precisely because it runs on an objective, if imperfect, filter that values whoever scores highest on the MCAT. Hollywood, by his account, has no equivalent filter: roughly 90 percent of the highest-grossing films are still directed by men; minorities in the industry get treated as diversity projects rather than talent, and there’s nothing resembling medicine’s blunt, if flawed, meritocracy. Interpreting the 2025 Bihar Verdict

Bihar has once again delivered a political drama worthy of its reputation—record turnout, sharp debates over the voter rolls, a decisive victory for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), and a fresh round of questions about whether the opposition has what it takes to displace Modi and the BJP. The NDA—anchored by Nitish Kumar and his Janata Dal (United), together with the BJP and other allies—secured a landslide victory by winning 202 out of 243 seats in the state assembly. The opposition, for its part, saw little change in its vote share from 2020, but could only muster 35 seats. To work through the elections—and their larger meaning for India's political economy—Milan is joined on the show today by the Hindustan Times data and political economy editor Roshan Kishore. Over the past several months, Roshan and his team have consistently put out the most thoughtful data and analysis on the trends in Bihar. Milan and Roshan discuss the resilience of the JD(U)–BJP alliance, the polarization in the electorate, and the dissonance within the opposition alliance's campaign. Plus, the two discuss the Election Commission of India (ECI)'s controversial review of electoral rolls, the impact of upstart Prashant Kishor and his Jan Suraaj Party, and what the elections portend for India's political economy beyond November.Watch the episode here.Episode notes:1. Ronak shares his journey from coding at age 10 to building satellites in his living room, and his mission to democratize access to space — letting anyone, anywhere, interact directly with satellites without the traditional gatekeeping. The conversation covers the evolution of space exploration from the 1960s to today, why private innovation has reignited interest, the economics driving launch cost reductions, and the mindset required to take on “mad” ideas. Ronak also explains Take Me to Space's products — Orbit View and Orbit Lab — and how they could make programmable satellites as accessible as personal computers once became. Whether you're a space enthusiast, a founder thinking about first-principles innovation, or just curious how a non-aerospace engineer ended up building satellites, this episode is full of inspiration and insight.

Watch This Episode On YouTubeWatch The Trailer Of A Nice Indian BoyPreorder the film, available for streaming on May 6, 2025I can't give this title out often before it becomes meaningless, but the best film I've seen this year is A NICE INDIAN BOY (2024), by director Roshan Sethi. And with SINNERS (2025), it's the hottest story in film right now. Let's talk about why that is with one of the most intelligent and analytic minds in filmmaking: Roshan Sethi. In this episode, Roshan and I talk about:the overwhelming positive response to the film and what that says about the state of independent film;how did they know to go "all in" with theaters?he does a deep dive into the complex nature of distribution;his path from doctor to indie filmmaker;was it because he was bothered by medical inaccuracies in Hollywood? no, not at all;what about romcoms draws him to that material and what he learned from 7 DAYS?he's done both a heteronormative and a queer romcom; was he worried about the release of this film?when does he trust a streamers' algo?** how to cast ethnic, queer, or other niches and what guideposts to use for actors that aren't part of a particular group? "often gay roles are used to launch stars"; this is a must listen answer **it seemed like this would be a written and directed feature but it came from a play; what kind of adaptations did he make?how he borrowed a technique from reality television to move along different plot points simultaneously;how to find profitability in great indie films -- "And so the problem is not the creators who are creating very diverse content, that's often very good. It's not the audiences who crave diverse content, it's the people who are in the middle, which is film executives and the apparatus of the system";his advice as a mentor for the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles; "I am just recommending that everybody make as commercial a project as they can, action, horror, thriller, whatever";where did the nobility come from in being broke to make films? "every art form suffers from a certain amount of pretentiousness, which is the desire to be artistically elevated and to be seen as an artist who is more sophisticated than other artists;his thought process of releasing the film for streaming while it's in theaters;having to think about releasing an indie film almost like politicians think about precincts.Roshan's Indie Film Highlight: GIRLS WILL BE GIRLS (2024) dir. by Shuchi TalatiLinks:Follow Roshan On InstagramFollow A NICE INDIAN BOY On InstagramA NICE INDIAN BOY Official WebsiteSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/first-time-go/exclusive-content
