In the fourth message of our series called Feasts, Pastor Mel explains the Jewish "Shavuot" which means "Weeks". God instituted the feasts so the people of Israel would celebrate His provision, memorialize significant events, and foreshadow things to come. The Feast of Weeks celebrates the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai, as well as the wheat harvest in the land of Israel. Pentecost is the Greek name for the Feast of Weeks which occurs 50 days after the Feast of Firstfruits. God orchestrated the feast schedule so that a crowd of Jews from various nations were gathered into one place when the Holy Spirit was poured out on them. Robert Baer said, "Bethlehem was God with us, Calvary was God for us, and Pentecost is God in us."

This feast is the second of the three harvest feasts. It occurs exactly seven weeks after the Feasts of First Fruits, so it's also called Pentecost, which means "50days." God's plan to save souls included more than the Jews. Through Jesus, this plan was revealed. In Matthew 9:37, Jesus tells His disciples that "the harvest is great, but the workers are few." Then he put the plan into place: In Acts 1:4 He tells them to wait in Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit.That arrival was the day the Church was born- Pentecost - and the harvest began with 3000 souls. The message spread to both Jews and Gentiles( the two leavened loaves of bread), extending the harvest to us.

In the season of Pentecost, we commemorate the gift of the Holy Spirit descending upon the apostles. It was an event that the prophets, revered representatives of God to the people, had foretold centuries ago. That was, however, not all they had foretold, for there was also an invitation to call on the Lord to be saved. The Lord would be the one who triumphs over death and ascends to heaven, and it is revealed through the resurrection that Jesus is Lord. This season, then, let us focus on Jesus, and let him lead our lives.
