SYSCA founder Lucy Blakiston returns to the Fold for the first time in a while to talk through a truly singular year. Her business pivoted to being what it was perhaps always meant to be – her, as a solo news-explaining creator, working for her audience primarily. That meant saying goodbye to her two co-founders and taking on the whole load herself. But it also saw her sign a huge global book deal, move to Portugal, hit a deep depression, confront the realities of covering the war in Gaza online, move back to Blenheim. She also watched Instagram become Twitter in the process, while Substack became her true home. She joins Duncan Greive for an incredibly candid conversation about the reality of UGC life in 2024. On this episode of Between Two Beers we talk to Lucy Blakiston. Lucy's story is quite incredible. In 2018, she was sitting in a uni lecture, getting increasingly frustrated with how disconnected she felt from the information she was being delivered. So, along with her two hometown best friends, she started a blog called Shit You Should Care About. Four years later, it's turned into a mini-media empire. Her daily newsletter reaches 60,000 subscribers every morning, she hosts two podcasts and runs an Instagram page which has 3.6 million followers. In this episode we talk about Shit You Should Care About's ginormous Instagram presence, and what it's like being followed by Billie Eilish, Joe Rogan and Ariana Grande, how they went from 200,000 followers to a million in one month – and why it made her too scared to post, learning to accept the tag ‘media genius', the decision to go ‘full time', how they make their money, Harry Styles, what the future holds and so much more. This was such an enlightening, fun chat with someone who seems to understand social media better than anyone we've met. Lucy IS a media genius, her journey is only just starting and it's exciting to think where it might lead. Today we deep-dived into a bit of a dilemma. A friend of someone we work with is a bridesmaid at her friend's wedding, but she has a bit of an issue with the groom. Should she advise her friend against marrying him? It's a bit of an awkward situation! Both of us also had a medical exam yesterday and we BOTH had shockers (in terms of urine samples... Whoops). Finally, if you don't follow the Instagram account S**t You Should Care About, you really should. It's run by a couple of girls in Blenheim, boasts over 2 million followers and is followed by a bunch of celebrities. It's a modern-style news account that explains what's going on around the world that the mainstream media might not be picking up. Lucy Blakiston is one of the ladies behind it and we caught up with her!
