"No matter what we navigate, adversities or joys alike, there are elements of who we are that are innate. I don't think they change just because circumstances change. I actually don't think we change at all. We just evolve."Mallory Weggemann was just 18 years old when a series of routine epidural injections for back pain left her with no movement from the waist down. Now, 17 years later, Mallory is a gold medal paralympian; an author, filmmaker and motivational speaker; and a fierce advocate for the disability community. In 2021, Mallory released her memoir LIMITLESS to share her journey and to empower others to overcome life's obstacles. And last year, Mallory and her husband released Watershed, a powerful documentary about her life story, including the couple's struggles with infertility. On top of that, Mallory brought home gold and silver medals from the Paralympic Games in Paris, making her a seven time medalist.During this conversation, Mallory and I discuss how she fell in love with the sport of swimming, what helped her navigate the trauma of becoming paralyzed, and the kinds of conversations she hopes to spark about disability in the world. In 2008, Mallory Weggemann underwent a medical procedure that left her paralyzed from the waist down. But three months after the injury, she returned to the sport of swimming that she loved. The 3x Paralympian and 5x Paralympic medalist, who is also aiming to represent Team USA in Paris this summer is an author, business owner, commentator, producer, and mother.
Just three months after Mallory Weggemann was rendered paralyzed after treatment for her back pain, she re-entered her happy place - the pool - and tried to regain not only her sense of strength, but her sense of self.Through this incredible challenge, Mallory learned about resilience, vulnerability, hope and persistence – qualities that not only helped her excel as a Paralympic Champion on the US swim team, but strengths that also helped her push forward during her struggle to conceive with her husband, Jay.While Mallory initially wondered about her ability to get pregnant and have children when she found out about her paralysis, and while others seeing her in a wheelchair may assume the infertility is on ‘her side', the couple faced hurdles due to Jay's Male Factor Infertility – something that is a reality for many men and couples, and a diagnosis too often left out of the storytelling of infertility. Now Jay and Mallory are new parents and believe this tough chapter of navigating infertility, a MicroTESSE surgery to try to extract Jay's sperm, and the experience of doing fertility treatments together ultimately brought them even closer. This episode on finding hope in the face of challenges, how to love your body when you feel it's failing you and why vulnerability is a sign of strength, also features Scott Brown and Lauren Isley from California Cryobank™ who share insight and advice for those facing male factor infertility and may need sperm donation to build their families.Today's episode, in honor of National Infertility Awareness Week 2023, is presented by California Cryobank™, which carefully selects the highest quality sperm donors to give clients the best possible opportunity for a safe and successful pregnancy. Today we interviewed Mallory Weggemann & Jay Snyder! Mallory and Jay have navigated their own IVF journey and have shared every step with the world as they believe vulnerability is what makes us most connectable. It is their hope that they have played a role in helping reduce the stigma around male infertility, raise more awareness of the conversation of infertility and parenthood as it relates to professional female athletes, and change the perception of what parenthood and the journey looks like for women living with disabilities. It is with great joy that they embark on their greatest journey yet as they prepare to welcome their first child in March of 2023. Mallory has broken eight world records as a paralympic swimmer and by the 2012 Paralympic Games, she held fifteen world records and thirty-four American records. It was an honor to speak with these two and we hope you enjoy this episode! “I had the two black lines in my life, I had the black line that trailed the pages of my journal, and I had the black line that trails the bottom of a pool. And both gave me that place to be, that place to process, to grieve. I found the ability—with swimming specifically—to bridge my past to my present and lead me toward something in my future and allow me to understand that life was bigger than the moment I was facing. Swimming, in a lot of ways, brought me back to life.” Though she'd grown up in the water, Mallory Weggemann was nearly ready to leave competition behind for other dreams. But when a medical procedure gone wrong resulted in her paralysis at age 18, she found herself back in the pool. There, she regained her strength and confidence—and excelled swiftly enough to win Paralympic gold four years later in London. She had every intention of blazing forward with her athletic career and defending her gold in Rio. In 2014, though, she suffered another severe setback. At this second point of impact, she had to decide all over again why she swam, and whether it was worth the fight. In this week's episode—and her fantastic new book, Limitless: The Power of Hope and Resilience to Overcome Circumstance—the soon-to-be three-time Paralympian explains exactly why she didn't give in, and all the teamwork, support, and strength it took to work her way back to the black line that made her feel at home. I'm excited to have Mallory Weggemann as my guest on “Breakthroughs”... She joined Delta's CEO, Ed Bastian, to deliver an incredibly inspiring Townhall about representation & inclusion via a closed circuit stream to Delta's 75,000 employees. Bastian is one of Mallory's biggest corporate sponsors as well as a huge supporter of inclusion and representation of disabilities in the workplace. Mallory is a world-class athlete, business owner and speaker. She is a Paralympic Gold-Medalist, 15-Time World Champion Swimmer, ESPN ESPY Award winner, TV Sports Commentator, and founder of social impact agency, TFA Group. Mallory knows firsthand that the words and images we use, and how we use them, impacts how society perceives everything. A bit of context to the void that currently exists: 20% of the US population is disabled 0 Fortune 500 CEOs are disabled 1 disabled female senator out of 535 representatives and senators 1 disabled president (who hid his disability) out of 46 Fewer than 2% of characters on TV are disabled. 95% of the actors playing those characters are not disabled. US unemployment rate is 7% - 76% of the disabled are unemployed 10.5 % of Americans live below the poverty level while 32% of disabled Americans live below the poverty level In 2020, Mallory was a TV commentator at the Golden Globes and didn't see one person who had a disability the entire day -- one of the largest gatherings of the biggest names in Hollywood. In fact, she had to be lifted three steps when she reached the end of the carpet because no one had thought to create an accessible path for a wheelchair. In 2008, when Mallory was paralyzed at the age of 18, she yearned to see representation. When she looked at the world around her, she felt isolated by her differences. It was then that Mallory learned it is hard to become what you don't see. For the past 13 years she has made a conscious decision to do her part to fill that void, so our next generation never has to ask, “what about me?” We discuss her newly released book, “Limitless: The Power of Hope and Resilience to Overcome Circumstance”. This episode is for anyone who's interested in getting inspiration on the topic of how to garner hope and resilience to overcome any difficult circumstance. https://www.amazon.com/Limitless-Power-Resilience-Overcome- Circumstance/dp/1400223466
