But a little forethought and initiative can prevent some of that decision fatigue.” - Jessica Smith “I need community to have self-accountability.” - Jessica Smith More About Jessica Smith As far back as I remember, I've always struggled with my weight. Genetics and growth spurts would help me at times, but by the time I got out of college, my level of unhealthy was at an all-time high. After college, I decided I'd start running to get in shape. I signed up for a 5k and began training. You can imagine what happened. I went strong for the first few weeks, but then fell off the so-called wagon. The 5k crept up on me, and while I did complete it - I certainly hadn't trained well for it. Forget about nutrition or healthy fuel. That didn't even cross my mind until I was in my 30s. From that first 5k until after I had my second child, I yo-yo'd up and down and tried just about everything to become a healthier version of myself. I'd get “reserious” over and over and over again. I'd never make it all the way. I'd break the promise I made to myself time and time again. When did things finally click for me? I was reading the book, “Girl Wash Your Face,” by Rachel Hollis when she explained something that totally blew my mind. It changed the game for me. She said, if I made plans with my girlfriends for Thursday night dinner, I would NOT break that commitment. I'd keep that promise and meet them for dinner. We NEVER break promises to others, but we are SO QUICK to break the promises we make to ourselves. My mouth DROPPED. It was such a lightbulb moment to me about accountability. WHY NOT? Right there, I decided that I was not breaking any more promises to myself. Fast forward a few years, I've finally settled into a routine of healthy habits that I'm proud of. I have a plan that I stick to, and truly it just feels like a normal way of life now. My workouts don't feel like a “task” anymore. It's a habit. It's my way of life. It's my means to sanity and stress relief with two kids and a full time job. My eating habits are no longer fad diets or crazy short term instant gratification gimmicks. I eat to fuel my body because I want to keep this body forever. I want this body to be strong and resilient from the inside out. Stephanie welcomes Rebecca George to discuss the power of embracing weakness as part of our Gospel Spice Wellness series. They share their experience with the “curse of the capable woman”, as Stephanie calls it, and how surrendering our weaknesses to God allows Him to turn them into His strengths. They discuss the tension between achieving for God's glory while avoiding self-sufficiency and how we can open our hands and offer ourselves to God. The conversation shifts to the ultimate calling of a Christ follower to make disciples, and the importance of surrendering one's life to God. The episode also touches on the dangers of constantly doing and the importance of trusting God's timing. Together Stephanie and Rebecca emphasize that embracing weakness is the path to success and encourage YOU to focus on God in moments of brokenness. Rebecca shares her personal experiences with being an overachiever and how surrendering our weaknesses to God can transform them into strengths. Rebecca also talks about the importance of balancing grace and self-discipline in our lives and the ultimate calling of a Christ follower to make disciples wherever we are and in whatever season we are in. They also discuss the Great Commission and the ongoing behavior of making disciples without striving or burnout. Tune in to gain valuable insights on living a life of surrender and obedience to God! Some key takeaways for this conversation include, - We can feel like we have to rely on our own strength to get things done. - Weakness is what God wants from us, because He already has plenty of strength! - Surrendering our weaknesses to God allows Him to turn it into His strength. That is the goal! - Embracing weakness is actually the path to success, because we learn to trust Him. Stephanie and Rebecca invite you to focus on God: - Have an eternal perspective - Fix your eyes on Jesus and worship Him for His character - In moments of struggle and brokenness, invite God into our weaknesses and ask Him to transform them into strengths. - The outcome belongs to God, and the obedience belongs to humans. They also inspire you to balance grace and self-discipline with the following: - Strive to do everything with excellence for the glory of God; - Hold both grace and self-discipline closely and not see them as opposing forces. Making disciples is the ultimate calling of a Christ follower. Together, they add: - a calling is not necessarily to have a public ministry. - We can make disciples wherever we are and in whatever season we are in. - Making disciples is an ongoing behavior, not a one-time task or something to be added to a to-do list. - Striving to make disciples all the time can lead to burnout. - Different seasons may require a shift in our time and capacity, and it is important to have ongoing conversations about where we feel called to spend our time. To conclude, surrender to God is the key! You have heard it before, but it is important to remember: - Surrendering one's life to God on a regular basis is important. - It means not producing results on one's own strength or measuring one's own performance. - True freedom comes from allowing God's spirit to produce the fruit. NEW! GO DEEPER WITH QUESTIONS, ON YOUR OWN OR WITH A FRIEND: 1. How do you relate to the “curse of the capable woman,” (even if you are a man!) and how have you experienced it in your life? 2. Do you struggle with self-sufficiency or overachievement? How does this conversation resonate with you? 3. What is your view on grace and self-discipline, and how do you balance the two in your life? 4. How do you feel about the importance to fight striving? Do you agree with her stance against “Girl Wash Your Face”? 5. Have you ever experienced a moment of surrender to God in your weakness? How did that change your perspective? 6. What does it mean to you to make disciples as you go about your daily life? How can you apply this principle to your own life? 7. Have you experienced moments of burnout? What do you do to avoid it? 8. How does your personal view of success align or differ from Rebecca's and Stephanie's perspective? 9. How do you remind yourself of God's unconditional love for you and the fact that nothing you do can make Him love you more or less? 10. In moments of struggle and brokenness, how do you invite God into your weaknesses and ask Him to transform them into strengths? *Like many people, Rachel Hollis had a difficult time growing up. But she realized that, whatever her circumstances, it was no excuse for not designing and building a great life. *Success has to be seized, and involves sacrifices, but it's no harder than settling for mediocrity. *The former party planner with a flourishing media company and family reveals what's behind the influencer persona. *Hollis is shockingly honest about her struggles, mistakes, crises, and the sheer amount of time it took her to achieve what she has. *Her themes such as the need to dream big, the importance of letting go of the past, and making sure you care for yourself first are to be found in many self-help books, but Hollis adds into the mix her Christian faith. *It brings extra meaning to her goal to empower women around the world and help them become their own hero. Welcome Mindset Hackers to a brand new week and another opportunity for you to go out and create the life that you love! We live in a day and age where we have so many tools to create the life that you want, the live that you truly deserve. It has never been easier, with so many tools available, for you to live the life of your dreams, to have a voice, to get paid to do what you love. But the promise of instant success is so seductive, and marketers use this as an angle to get your money. What happens is people get lured into the idea of instant success, quick results. What actually happens is people hit the wall in the first 3 to 6 months of their great endeavor, reality hits and the realization that it is harder than they though. Self doubt starts to creep in. "Am I made for this?" "What's wrong with me?" "Why are other people succeeding when I am not"? The truth is, success takes time. It doesn't need to be hard, but it does take time. The expectation of quick results can be your biggest downfall. Focus on Mastery instead, and the results will come. Gary Vaynerchuck wrote an entire book documenting the back stories of so many incredible influencers such as Rich Roll, and how many years of cutting their teeth. This is the path of the entrepreneur. Rachel Hollis once got interviewed and was asked about her instant success of her best selling books "Girl Wash Your Face" and "Girl, Stop Apologizing". She kindly let the interviewer know that she had 6 books that she had written before that, books that no one has heard of. Recharting Your Life With Hope -Get Unstuck and Discover Direction, Purpose, and Joy for Your Life
When Katie Avery found herself a single mom with three kids, no job, and a broken heart, she kept faith that God had a plan for her life. Little did she know the plan included her dream job in her dream town and going on dates again with her high school sweetheart. Take-Home Points: When your heart is opposed to a decision, you may have physical symptoms like Katie when she wasn't able to catch her breath while running and she was crying all the time. She knew deep in her heart it wasn't where God needed her to be despite it feeling like what she felt like she should do. Trust your instincts. When you feel unloved, unattractive, unappreciated, these are all indications you're out of alignment. You never know what someone else is going through, even if they look like they have it all together on the outside. When faced with a difficult decision, ask yourself what you'd tell your child if this situation were happening to her. Pray through every decision; never lose faith that God has a plan for your life. Use the hard times as reminders that even though you feel broken, these difficulties can be used as part of your purpose. And finally, you've gotta be the one to decide to rewrite your story. You can choose to focus on the pain or you can choose to get healthy, make good choices, and move forward. Tough love time: your goals can't afford for you to pause right now. I know it feels hard, some days it feels impossibly hard to get up and attack your goals when all of a sudden you've become maid, chef, teacher, coach, on top of everything you already felt responsible for handling. The key folks is mindset. This episode contains audio from a livestream I held on Facebook a couple weeks back where I talked about mastering your mindset so you can achieve your goals. Things aren't going to go back to normal. The good news about that is, you don't have to go back to who you were. Ask yourself, who do you want to emerge as when all of this is over? This week on the RISE Podcast we're tackling a topic I get requested to do a lot: vision casting! Not only is vision casting a practice that's made a huge impact on my life, but it can also help you feel a sense of order and control during times of uncertainty (and who doesn't want that right now?) Here's the deal: there will always be uncertainty in our lives, there will always be obstacles and there will always be factors that we can't control. Vision casting is a way to set a clear path toward the things you want, using what you can control.--Do you have a question for Rachel? Let's talk essentials: when you're face to face with hard choices, what flashes through your mind? What really matters? In order to tackle this incredibly important topic for our #Next90Days Challenge, I had to call on the master of essentialism himself; Greg McKeown. If you're not familiar with Greg's work, here's a little refresher: his New York Times bestselling book Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less has transformed the way individuals and team view measures of success by stripping away everything that's standing in their way. What is left are the essentials, and that's exactly what we're diving into today. If you want to dive more into essentialism (and I highly recommend that you do) please check out Greg's website where you can view his interviews with top performers, check out his social media, and sign up for his newsletter!--Do you have a question for Rachel? When I heard our friends at Dell were putting on a virtual business "podference" (like a podcast conference... podference, you get it) and they wanted me to contribute an episode for small and medium sized business owners, I knew EXACTLY what I wanted to talk about. This week during our Next 90 Days Challenge we're focusing on organization, which is a topic I find INCREDIBLY important, even when we're not in quarantine. I don't know about you guys, but I've been especially obsessed with organizing my home ever since I've been stuck here 24/7. That's why I wanted to dive into routine with you: I want to empower you to make organization work for you. How can your routine meet you where you're at, so that you can get where you want to go? This episode comes from my Rise n Shine series I did on Facebook last week, so if you missed it there (or if you just want to re-live the fun) you can enjoy it here on the podcast! I hope you enjoy the tips and tricks we cover, as well as a special preview of my free Next90 lesson on organization, available at the end of the episode. Gretchen Rubin is always such a pleasure to have on the podcast, and this week her wisdom felt like a gift from above. Gretchen and I connected over Skype to talk about Choosing Joy - which means finding nuggets of happiness even when it feels awkward, even when it makes you feel guilty, even when every fiber of your being just wants to hide under the covers until it's all over. You can be a responsible, caring citizen of the world AND still choose joy for yourself and your family during this hard season. Gretchen has the tools and strategies to do just that, and it's all in this week's episode.Make sure you're following Gretchen on instagram @gretchenrubin for all the things related to her bestselling books and her Four Tendencies quiz. In this episode he talks about how to Google your dreams (literally), finding strength in hard things, and the life-altering power of a mother's love.
