Black Freedom: A Visual History of Juneteenth and Emancipation Days (Black Dog & Leventhal, 2026) is the first fully illustrated history of Juneteenth and other Emancipation Day celebrations, told through photographs, art, and an engrossing narrative. For more than 150 years, Black communities have gathered to honor freedom, resilience, and the ongoing struggle for true liberation. While Juneteenth has recently gained wider recognition, it was one of many Emancipation Day traditions celebrated across the United States. These observances were spaces of joy, remembrance, and resistance—even as the fight for full freedom was unfinished. This volume brings together stirring essays and striking images from Juneteenth and beyond, offering a sweeping portrait of how Black people have created and sustained rituals of remembrance, a testament to the generations who, through celebration and storytelling, demanded that their contributions to the making of America be fully recognized. Blair LM Kelley is an award-winning author, historian, and scholar of the African American experience. She is also the president and director of the National Humanities Center, the only independent center for advanced study in the world dedicated exclusively to the humanities. “Maps are communicating vast quantities of new knowledge that was only estimated. They convey this imaginative energy — an imaginative energy that maps today have lost, because today maps are so functional, so utilitarian.” — Peter Keating In the sixteenth century, Spanish cartographers represented California as an island. They weren't being careless. Nor were they drawing New Yorker covers. These 16th century cartographers were, instead, mapping the limits of both what they knew and what they imagined. Cartography is as much an art as a science and maps always mirror how we see the world. Thus Peter Keating's beautifully illustrated new book, Power Lines: Maps That Shaped the Way We See the World. Assembling nearly 100 of history's most consequential political maps, Keating's thesis is that maps are not neutral. They are arguments. Every map centers something — a religion, an empire, a people — and pushes something else to the margins. The story of cartography, then, is the story of power. Five Takeaways • California Was an Island: The Power of Imagined Geography: In the sixteenth century, Spanish cartographers drew California as a large island off the coast of America. They weren't being careless — they were mapping the edge of what was known and imaginable. Before any map can draw a border, Keating argues, it has to decide what is real. The T-and-O medieval maps placed Jerusalem at the center of the world, with the biblically admitted lands of Europe, Africa, and Asia radiating outward. Only slowly, and with great difficulty, did the Western cartographic tradition absorb the fact that there was a whole continent between their imagination and the Pacific. • The Oldest Tension in Cartography: Sacred vs Scientific: Keating identifies two traditions in constant tension throughout Western history. The cosmographical tradition: center what you know and believe, place your gods and sacred lands at the middle of the world, and mix fantasy with inquiry. The scientific tradition: starting with Ptolemy in ancient Greece and independently in ancient China, create maps that generals and kings could actually use to expand territory, find resources, and identify enemies. With Rome's Christianisation, the cosmographical tradition dominated for nearly a thousand years. The Ptolemaic scientific tradition only re-emerged with the Renaissance and exploration. • Poland: The Most Erased Country in Cartographic History: Keating's answer to his own question — which country has been wiped off maps most often yet survived? Poland. It disappeared from maps at least three times, divided and partitioned by more geographically fortunate powers — Habsburgs, Russians, Nazis — whose cultural and military might seemed overwhelming. And yet Poland survived every erasure in the hearts of its people. A 1956 map of Poland as a carnation, published by the communist government as a May Day celebration, reads — Keating argues — as subversive under the surface: a nation asserting its existence against the regime that claimed to represent it. • Lincoln's Favorite Map: The Slave Density Survey: The most powerful map in the book: the 1861 Coast Survey, a non-ideological government project that shaded American counties by the density of enslaved populations. Lincoln studied it obsessively. He reasoned that where enslaved people were densest, Union troops could arrive as liberators and find support. Where they were rare — in predominantly white areas of the South — he could pursue accommodation and peace. The map shaped the Emancipation Proclamation's geography. And because enslaved populations had settled where the delta soils were richest, the map also explains the cultural and political geography of the American South today. • The Two-Color Election Map Is Making Democracy Worse: Every two years, Americans are shown the same red-and-blue electoral map. Keating's verdict: it is a bad projection, a winner-take-all distortion, and a representation of the Electoral College's biases rather than actual political sentiment. Research shows that two-color maps increase cynicism, cause people to underestimate the number of fellow-partisans in other states, and erode faith in politics. In a democracy, maps should reflect actual political support. The United States is overdue for population-based electoral maps. About the Guest Peter Keating is a narrative journalist whose work has appeared in GQ, Mother Jones, National Geographic, and Politico. When she was just 18 years old, Debbie Haski-Leventhal escaped the entrenched lies and brainwashing of a dangerous cult. Originally based in Tel Aviv, Israel, Debbie became involved in the Kabbalah Centre after her mother, vulnerable after the loss of her ten-year-old son, looked to the charismatic institution for comfort. As the power and influence of the Kabbalah Centre grew, so did its control over Debbie's life. She shares the backstory of this mystic religion, how it expanded to the United States, and, most importantly, how she escaped its clutches. Today, Debbie is a professor at Macquarie University and the author of Make it Meaningful: How to Find Purpose in Life and Work. She inspires others to be a force for good as she exposes the darkness of the Kabbalah Centre and celebrates the beauty of her now found freedom. TAKEAWAYS Modern Kabbalah, as it is known in mainstream circles, stems from ancient mystery philosophies ‘Rabbi' Philip Berg - and the Berg family - is responsible for bringing Kabbalah to the United States Until the Bergs streamlined Kabbalah, it was a ‘secret' religion only accessible to men The Bergs' version of Kabbalah is a cult, designed to control others and enrich themselves
Send a textHealthcare is colliding with technology faster than most people realize. In this episode of FUTUREPROOF., I sit down with analyst Rajiv Leventhal, who covers the intersection of healthcare, pharma, and tech, to unpack three forces reshaping the system at once: AI, GLP-1 weight loss drugs, and the mental health impact of digital life.We start with AI as a health tool. Nearly a quarter of ChatGPT's global weekly users now use it for health-related prompts. That's not a niche behavior. It's a mainstream one. The question isn't whether people will turn to AI for medical guidance. They already are.The real tension is trust and liability. General-purpose AI tools aren't bound by HIPAA in the same way healthcare providers are. Yet they're increasingly acting as digital concierges — answering late-night pediatric questions, explaining lab results, and helping people prepare for appointments in a system where access is strained. And that system is strained. Even in major cities, patients can wait months — sometimes a year — to see specialists. When access gaps widen, alternative tools step in. AI isn't replacing doctors. It's filling holes. We then turn to GLP-1 drugs and the weight-loss explosion. What began as diabetes treatment became a cultural and commercial wave driven by social media, FDA approvals, and aggressive advertising. But beneath the surface is a regulatory gray market of compounded versions, patent battles, and telehealth platforms monetizing demand. Finally, we tackle social media's impact on mental health. The evidence linking heavy use — especially among teens — to anxiety and depression is growing, even if causation remains complex. Is this a regulation problem? A parental problem? A public health issue? Or another example of technology moving faster than governance? This episode isn't about hype. It's about what happens when broken systems create openings — and tech companies move into the space.Because when trust erodes and access declines, people don't wait. They improvise.

In this episode recorded at DevConnect in Buenos Aires, I sit down with Eugene Leventhal (researcher at Metagov, podcaster at Governance Futures, new head of governance at Octant) to discuss the current crisis in crypto governance. The general feeling is that governance has been declared dead, foundations are being pushed aside, and the decentralization theater is being abandoned now that Trump's election has lifted compliance pressure.Eugene unpacks what he calls the "original sin of DAOs" (most were created purely for regulatory cover) and why most failed. But it's not all doom, we discuss the few projects still genuinely committed to decentralization, institutional interest in deliberative tooling, and why work on transparency and democratic innovation still matters, even as the industry pivots toward unregulated founder worship.Links:Bread Cooperative's Democratic Multisig webinarGuide book can be downloaded hereIf you liked the podcast be sure to give it a review on your preferred podcast platform. In this powerful message Lou Leventhal takes us deep into Ephesians 2:8-10, verses we may have memorized but rarely stop to truly absorb. We're confronted with the reality that salvation isn't about cleaning ourselves up before coming to God—it's about coming as we are and letting Him transform us. The imagery is striking: we're like a shattered glass that can't hold water, or a cut Christmas tree that looks beautiful with decorations but is fundamentally dead, severed from its life source. This is our spiritual condition apart from Christ—not just flawed or messy, but genuinely dead. Yet the beautiful paradox is that while we're saved by grace through faith—both gifts we cannot earn—we're simultaneously called God's masterpiece, His handiwork, created with intentionality and purpose. The Steinway piano illustration drives this home: imagine a $225,000 instrument crafted over a year by master artisans, made from 200-year-old wood, then used to plant a garden or slice eggs. Absurd, right? Yet that's what happens when we ignore the purposes God designed us for. We're not saved simply to avoid hell; we're saved for relationship, for transformation, and to join God in His work. The question isn't whether we're good enough—we're not, and that's the point. The question is whether we'll receive what's freely offered and then live as the masterpieces we were created to be.

In this episode of Lab Rats to Unicorns, John Flavin sits down with Dr. Joseph Leventhal, Professor of Surgery and Director of Living Donor Kidney Transplantation at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. A pioneer in the field of organ transplantation, Dr. Leventhal's research is redefining what's possible in immune tolerance—an area often described as the “holy grail” of transplantation, where a patient's body can accept a donated organ without lifelong immunosuppressive drugs.Dr. Leventhal shares his journey from growing up in New York City to becoming one of the foremost leaders in transplant surgery and cell therapy innovation. He discusses how his team's groundbreaking clinical work has shown that tolerance can be achieved through cellular therapies, potentially freeing patients from the burdens of chronic immunosuppression. From the early days of cyclosporine to founding TRACT Therapeutics and developing first-in-human T-regulatory cell therapies, Joe reflects on the scientific curiosity, resilience, and collaboration that drive progress in a complex field. He also explores the evolving ecosystem for biotech innovation in Chicago, the challenges of translating academic research into clinical therapies, and the optimism surrounding the next generation of precision cell therapies.

Nestled along Mexico's Pacific coast, David Leventhal's Playa Viva is redefining hospitality through a radical commitment to regenerative design. More than just a boutique hotel, it's a living ecosystem where architecture breathes, nature flows freely, and every material tells a story of sustainability.Imagine waking in a treehouse suspended among palm trees, with no doors or windows—just an uninterrupted connection to the landscape. This is Leventhal's vision: hospitality that doesn't just minimize environmental impact, but actively regenerates it.The resort's structures are poetry in natural materials. Bamboo "bones" form parabolic roofs, carefully woven and raised by hand. Shower floors become canvases of meticulously placed pebbles, each stone positioned with artisan precision. Wall pigments are sourced locally—rich oranges and browns extracted directly from mountain landscapes, mixed with unconventional ingredients like hay, horse manure, and even turtle eggshells."We're not just building rooms," Leventhal explains, "we're creating experiences that transform how humans interact with environment."This transformation begins with radical design choices. Solar panels provide 100% off-grid electricity. Air conditioning is minimised, with innovative systems like the "Evening Breeze" technology cooling only specific areas. The goal isn't comfort through separation, but comfort through connection. The resort sits on 200 acres of regenerating landscape, including a critical turtle sanctuary. Local community members—many former poachers—now protect endangered turtle species, releasing hatchlings at dawn under careful supervision. The broader ReSiMar project demonstrates Leventhal's systemic approach to ecological restoration. Starting from mountain headwaters and extending to the coastline, this watershed regeneration initiative has already documented remarkable recoveries, including recent jaguar sightings in the Sierra Madre Mountains. What makes Playa Viva revolutionary isn't just its sustainable infrastructure, but its philosophical approach. Each design decision emerges from deep respect for place—understanding geological, anthropological, and ecological histories before a single structure is built.Guests aren't passive observers but active participants in this regenerative narrative. Yoga retreats, farm experiences, and community engagement transform vacationing from consumption to connection. The resort's B-Corp certification and recent Michelin keys underscore its commitment to excellence through ecological integrity.Leventhal's background in media and technology might seem an unlikely pathway to ecological design. Yet his journey reveals how personal transformation drives systemic change. "Change happens little by little," he reflects, "until it happens all at once."This philosophy permeates every aspect of Playa Viva. The manta ray-inspired treehouses, the infinity casita with its locally sourced manufactured wood, the organic farm—each element represents a deliberate choice to work with, not against, natural systems. For travellers seeking more than a temporary escape, Playa Viva offers a glimpse of possible futures. Here, luxury isn't about isolation and excess, but about deep, meaningful engagement with living landscapes. As climate challenges intensify, Leventhal's model provides a compelling blueprint. Regenerative design isn't a luxury—it's a necessity. By reimagining hospitality as a collaborative dance with ecological systems, Playa Viva demonstrates that sustainable travel can be both profoundly beautiful and transformative. The resort whispers an essential truth: humans aren't separate from nature, but integral participants in complex, interconnected living systems. And in that understanding lies our most profound opportunity for healing—one treehouse, one turtle, one thoughtfully placed pebble at a time.https://www.playaviva.comhttps://oceanfdn.org/projects/la-tortuga-viva/Have a listen to the podcast we did with Louis Thompson, partner of Nomadic Resorts mentioned by David. Former U.S. Ambassador to Denmark Alan Leventhal joined us Wednesday evening with a message of encouragement for younger generations. If you feel disheartened by the current state of affairs in the world, whether it's the war in the Middle East, economic hardships, or civil unrest, Leventhal believes our youngest generations can overcome whatever obstacles are thrown their way, the same way older generations did with WWII, the Vietnam War, and more.

“I think that my analytic awareness of denial and projection and the concreteness of psychic reality when executive function wanes, that I could help the other caretakers to understand some of what was going on - to give them a way to understand that relieves their sense of frustration and uncertainty. I think that the analytic awareness of denial, of projection, that these things are not generally recognized by many caretakers, but it does reorient and make the caretaking function much more tolerable. It expands the understanding of what goes on in the waning personality. I also think that analytic work fosters the capacity to tolerate ambiguity, uncertainty, pain and frustration and in that way may allow us, the analytic mind, to tolerate some of the intense affect - as sort of the phrase I love from an Italian analyst, as “writings waiting to be completed” - by the analytic mind. We can hold and metabolize the difficulty and offer that kind of function rather than unpleasantness just to be rid of. These are some of the things that I felt are useful as a psychoanalyst.” Episode Description: We begin with describing how dementia is a cloud over our field both for individuals and for institutes. Maxine then introduces us to 'Sally' who was her analysand 40 years prior to recontacting her to care for her cognitive decline. Maxine mentions that just hearing her former patient's voice instantly brought alive her past experiences with her. We discuss how she approached the issue of caring for her and her neurological condition. We consider the at times overlap between psychogenic and organic symptoms and she shares with us her countertransference experiences of herself losing her memory. Maxine also shares her approach to answering Sally's questions about the possibility of recovering. We close with her describing how she feels that being an analyst aided her care of Sally and what she learned from that experience that she brought to her other patients -"to face the pain of difficult truths." Our Guest: Maxine Anderson, MD, is a training and supervising analyst at the Northwestern Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, the Seattle Psychoanalytic Institute and Society and the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society. Originally trained in psychiatry, she pursued psychoanalytic training in Seattle in the early 1970s and then pursued post-graduate work at the British Psychoanalytical Society for 8 years, returning to Seattle in 1992. Thereafter, she became a Founding Member of the Northwestern Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. Maxine has published several articles, and chapters and 3 books, the most recent being The Hardest Passage: a psychoanalyst accompanies her patient's journey into dementia (Karnac, 2025). Feeling herself now to be an Elder in life and in her field, Maxine hopes to continue to think and write about this phase of personal and professional life. Recommended Readings: Balfour, A. (2007). There's a civil war happening inside the MAGA coalition, and unless you're really in the weeds, you probably haven't heard much about it. It's not being covered seriously, either by the traditional media or the independent press. And that's a shame — because it pits two foundational visions of conservatism against each other. On one side, you have Grover Norquist and his ironclad “no new taxes” pledge. On the other, you have Steve Bannon and his populist charge to eat the rich.Norquist has spent decades making sure no Republican dares raise taxes. His philosophy is clear: low taxes are good for everyone, rich or poor, and raising them is political suicide. He's survived every GOP iteration — from neocon war hawks to MAGA populists — by keeping that line firm. But now, Trump's “one big, beautiful bill” may include a tax hike on the wealthy. Norquist is sounding the alarm, warning that breaking this promise would be as foolish as George H.W. Bush's infamous “read my lips” moment.Meanwhile, Bannon doesn't just want to raise taxes — he wants to send a message. He sees MAGA as a working-class movement, and taxing the rich is part of proving that Wall Street, Silicon Valley, and the GOP's old donor class no longer control the party. It's the clearest philosophical fault line we've seen on the right in years. If the GOP embraces even a modest tax hike on the wealthy, it could mark the end of a Reagan-era consensus that has defined Republican politics for half a century.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. And yet, barely anyone is talking about it. Not because it isn't interesting, not because it isn't important, but because media — mainstream and independent — is stuck on one setting: “trouble for Trump.” It's a framing device. Every Trump story must either confirm that he's a danger to democracy or a bumbling fool. Anything else? Not interesting enough to cover.Steve Bannon, who's all over mainstream shows like Real Time with Bill Maher and Stephen A. Smith's podcast, is out here advocating a radical repositioning of the Republican tax platform — and the headlines are all about whether Trump should run for a third term. And I get it, that's the clickier angle. But it's also lazy. We're watching tectonic plates shift, and we're still playing with bumper stickers. That's not just a mainstream media problem, by the way. It's an independent media problem too. There are great voices on Substack and elsewhere that have done real work to break free from traditional narratives. And yet, over the last few weeks, I've seen far too much content boil down to one question: “Is this an outrage? Yes or no?” And when the answer is always “yes,” you're not informing anymore — you're reinforcing. My goal isn't to register my opinion on every current thing. My goal is to give you something that still feels relevant five years from now. Something you can remember discovering here before it hit the mainstream. I'm not always going to say the thing that fits into someone's ideological slot. That's going to disappoint people sometimes. I get that. But I hope the tradeoff is worth it. Because if you're giving me your time and maybe even your money, I owe you something rare. Power can be rapidly stripped away from individuals, or it can be taken away layer by layer. Not everyone makes it out of a cult, but life can become particularly meaningful when they do. A new purpose can arise for the person, more substantial than the grasp of mind control. Leaving an authoritarian cult is the experience that Dr. Debbie Haski-Leventhal, PhD, shared with us on this episode of Cult Conversations: The Influence Continuum. She found this meaning after a period of healing and self-exploration when she left the Kabbalah Centre. Her parents brought her into it when she was only five years old. She devoted her life to it as a chevre (hand-picked servants of Philip and Karen Berg, its leaders). She was able to escape by age nineteen. Debbie currently describes her role as “a professor of purpose and impact”, working with individuals and companies to make lives more meaningful. She crafted her book after decades of exploring what pro-social and satisfying behaviors bring to life. Her book is both inspirational and practical, laying out pointers from the model she developed. She believes strongly in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and works with business leaders to better utilize their human resources into meaning on both an individual and group basis. I must say, I loved this book, listened to it as an audiobook, and then bought it as a paperback and read it. It is a must-read book, in my opinion, for all survivors of mind control cults. It is an inspiration! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Acorns makes it easy for everyone to start saving and investing. , I'm Paul Vogelzang, and today, we're talking about something that affects all of us: how we stay strong, energized, and truly fit as we age. Guitarist and songwriter John Leventhal has spent almost a half century producing, playing for, and co-writing with some of the music world's most familiar names – Elvis Costello, Shawn Colvin, Jim Lauderdale, Marc Cohn, Joan Osborne, Sarah Jarosz, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Willie Nelson, and of course, Rosanne Cash, to whom Leventhal is married. He's won a fistful of Grammys, but the one thing he hasn't done in all that time is a solo record. Until now. Rumble Strip is a collection of instrumentals, a few songs, and a surprising cover or two. John Leventhal plays some of these tunes in-studio. 1. Floyd Cramer's Dream 2. JL's Hymn No. 2 3. That's All I Know About Arkansas
Thirty years ago, Rosanne Cash experienced an all-encompassing transformation. She had just left Nashville, her major label record deal and her marriage. She was living in New York and found herself falling in love with her producer, the guitarist John Leventhal. Her previous album Interiors had set the stage for the new Rosanne. With her landmark album, The Wheel, Cash and Leventhal came together to work on a brand new sound for the artist, who had a well established career in mainstream country along with multiple #1 radio hits. She blew it all up for love! Cash had been unhappy and was yearning to live a life of authenticity in her music and her personal life. Three decades later, she's reissued The Wheel and is ready to TALK ABOUT IT.In our conversation, Rosanne addresses the inner critic and how she's come to harness its power for good in the editing process. She took a painting class, where she painted a picture of her inner critic and has never looked back. After her divorce, she struggled with motherhood while trying not to ruin her kids' lives. She looks back now with regrets and guilt as most mothers do. Her saving grace is that she was not a normal mom. Her oldest daughter assures her that she would not want a normal mom. We also talk about John's upcoming solo debut album and why the two have established their own record label. Rosanne Cash is a treasure and I very much appreciated this deep dive into such a pivotal moment in her career and life!Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
