It came as something of a shock when Hertha BSC named Felix Magath as their interim coach last week. The coaching icon who's been out of the German top flight for a decade may be in the capital on a limited appointment, but the announcement rocked the German football world, crashing web sites and attracting extraordinary media attention. So what makes the man they call 'Quälix' such a big deal? To get you up to speed on all the laurels, legends, and lore that punctuate Magath's career, Nik Wildhagen called on Matt Hermann and Flo Reinecke. As you'll hear, there's a lot to talk about... This is an abbreviated version of the full podcast, also available HERE! Today is PART TWO of our Podcast with Matt Hermann, who is a Radiologist, worked in the largest “walled” prison in the USA, rode his bike across the USA, and is currently getting ready to move to Puerto Rico. You might say he's the most interesting man in the world. Let's dig in! Hilary Clinton says that Crypto is going to replace the US dollar as the dominant currency, and while she was trying to be negative, I think she's right. We discuss why disruption of currency and why decentralized currency is important for the future. Why do you think the fact that big banks can't fail is wrong? Yeah, one or two may go down here and there, but as a whole, we still believe they can't fail and trust them with our money. Why is that? Banks know that if you have upwards of 5 banking products within their bank, the chances of you leaving the bank are virtually zero. Wells Fargo even went as far as to open accounts for customers without them even knowing. Is this the banks admitting that their business model is at risk of failing? Environmentalism should be a bigger concern than it is. “Carbon Certificates” seem to work well with corporations and voters, but are they really good for the country? Tell us why you decided to ride your bike across the USA? What are some takeaways that you gained from biking across the nation? What did you listen to while riding? What did you learn about physicality during your ride? Was it all physical or was there a mental aspect as well? Why did you move to Puerto Rico? How did you convince your wife that it was a good idea? What's your favorite movie, and why? ------------ Quickly- I'm Scott Groves - Husband, Father, Loan Officer, Coach, Author, Podcaster, and Recent Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Today we're here with Matt Hermann, who is a Radiologist, worked in the largest “walled” prison in the USA, rode his bike across the USA, and is currently getting ready to move to Puerto Rico. You might say he's the most interesting man in the world. Let's dig in! Matt worked in the hospital at the Largest Walled Prison in the USA, which is in Michigan. What did you see working in that environment? How old were you when you worked in the prison hospital, and why did you take the job? Do you have more sympathy for prisoners since you have first hand experience working with them? What is the “Opioid Crisis?” In my understanding, it's an addiction to medication but not hardcore drugs, but how does it happen and what are we doing about it as a nation? In the 90's we were supposed to like opioids, what happened? We seem to go back and forward on whether or not the pharmaceutical companies are good or evil. They're getting sued all the time. What is your opinion on what they're doing? Scott discusses some of his own health problems and how pharmaceuticals will most likely allow him to live longer. People don't realize we are living in the future, and that is to the detriment of many people's health. Do you see this as a major problem? On the vein of us living in the future, Scott discusses some alarming priority issues that exist in his family. Americans seem to be getting more and more complacent and are not even realizing it. Inflation is out of control, our world footprint is shrinking, our government can't maintain a budget. Meanwhile, China has a 100 year plan and a ton more experience than we do. Do you think our citizens are ready to not be in the same worldwide position we've been in in the near future? I understand the “why” of crypto, but I don't understand the “how” or “where.” Can you shed some light on this? ------------ Quickly- I'm Scott Groves - Husband, Father, Loan Officer, Coach, Author, Podcaster, and Recent Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The Bundesliga rang in the new year with rollicking Rückrunde action on Match Day 18. Listen in as Matt Hermann speaks to Jasmine Baba about: How Bayern's Covid-struck skeleton crew proved they're just as good as the club's first choicers by dropping points to Gladbach, How Dortmund managed to prevail in another wild west shootout against Eintracht, and whether the jury on who's actually a European-quality side is very much still out for half the league. Is it time to take a break already? I suppose if we really want to have a World Cup in Qatar next year (debatable), we'd better get cracking on qualification. And while that means the Bundesliga has to go into standby mode for a couple weeks, at least many of the league's top teams gave us plenty to cheer about on MD3. Matt Hermann rings up Marie Schulte-Bockum to talk about Wolfsburg's solid start under Mark van Bommel, Dortmund's thrill-seeking behavior (and whether it's healthy), German teams' European draws, the newcomers in Hansi Flick's first squad, and much more. Another goal-filled weekend of Bundesliga football - Jesse Marsch and Leipzig topped Pellegrino Matarazzo's Stuttgart in Germany's first face-off between two American head coaches, Leverkusen may have surprised even themselves by how convincingly they beat Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Cologne were far sprier than expected despite falling to FC Bayern. Matt Hermann and Terry Duffelen take in all this and more in this week's pod, which also casts a concerned glance at the shaky launch of Bundesliga coverage at the league's new UK broadcast partner Sky. It was not a rousing start from Die Nationalmannschaft in Euro 2020 (in 2021), as Jogi and the boys went down 1-0 to France. They pushed the ball around more or less at will, but when it came to creating chances, they weren't able to get much going. But did that have more to do with Germany or with France? It's been an eventful first few days here in Euro 2020 (in 2021)-land. Viewers around the world were reminded just what a piffle the whole affair is compared to a person's life and well-being, a host of players (and even whole countries) have scored their first European Championship goals, and Germany are about to get off the mark against World Cup holders France. Matt Hermann rang up his old friend (and friend of the pod) Andy Brassell to talk about Les Bleus' preparations, how coach Didier Deschamps might set them up to play, and what he and the Football Ramble gang have planned for their daily coverage of the tournament.
