We kick things off with an introduction of the days events and by showcasing a beautiful gift given to us directly from Stamford Bridge all the way over in London. We get into our previews by looking at Bayern Munich's opening Bundesliga match with Leipzig. First, we dive into the years Leipzig squad lead by new head coach Ole Werner formerly of Werder Bremen. We review key players like Lois Openda, David Raum, Benjamin Henrichs, Peter Gulacsi, of course Timo Werner (former Chelsea), and discuss the key loss of Benjamin Sesko, as well as review the Xavi Simons situation as he may be on his way to Chelsea. Finally, we talk about Leipzig's DFB Pokal first round 4-2 victory over 4th division side Sandhausen after surviving an early scare. Next, on to Bayern Munich, we recap their Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup victory over VFB Stuttgart before talking about what we may see from Vincent Kompany in this match. We preview potential lineups and tactics plus talk about what players may be key in opener. We discuss injuries and who may play which position before finally offering up our predictions on a final score for the match. Next, on to Chelsea verus West Ham. We review the brutal opening weekend loss for Graham Potters hammers 0-3 against newly promoted Sunderland. What talk what Potter and team leaders said after the match. We don't forget Chelsea's lackluster 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace. We discuss West Ham's new signings Diouf (LWB), Wilson (FWD) and Hermansen (GK) and how their team functions with Niclas Fullkrug and Jared Bowen. We preview what kinds of lineups/tactics Enzo Maresca might utilize for Chelsea in this one as well as who the impact players could be, Estevao, Gittens, Joao Pedro, Delap? Then, we discuss the Center Back situation and who might start between Tosin, Chalobah, Fofana, and Acheampong. Sporting KC have addressed a significant area of need on the roster bringing in center back Alan Montes from LigaMX club Necaxa in on loan with an option to buy at the end of the season. His profile is quite different from what SKC fans may be used to at the position, and on paper it looks to be a good addition and a divergence from how signings at the position had been identified and prioritized previously, which potentially mean a positive change in that philosophy. We've spent a lot of time recently discussing some of the potential for structural change tactically with the personnel on the current SKC roster, but this week we want to provide an alternate perspective about how maintaining a consistent platform could be for the purposes of player development. With a first year CB and DM, and essentially a first year GK, there is some value with stability, as well as some compromises made in build out to limit opportunities for error that could be hampering the effectiveness of the offense. These are calculated risks Kerry Zavagnin and the team appear to be making for the greater good of having players develop more quickly across the season. Finally, a bunch of transactions are happening all over the league as the secondary transfer window is well and truly open, the KC Current return from their break and don't miss a step, and a preview of a match against a San Diego team that candidly appears to be set up perfectly to exploit some of Sporting KC's larger deficiencies. Send us a textWhat does it take to excel as a defender when you don't fit the physical prototype? Michael Parkhurst, who captained Atlanta United to their 2018 MLS Cup victory, reveals how his mind became his greatest strength on the soccer pitch."My brain was my biggest asset," Parkhurst explains, detailing how he compensated for lacking the traditional center back qualities of height, strength, and aerial prowess. This mental approach not only fueled his remarkable professional career but also inspired his current mission helping young players develop beyond their technical abilities. After watching talented academy players fail to earn second contracts despite their skills, Parkhurst co-founded Beyond Goals Mentoring with former teammate Greg Garza. Their organization addresses the immense pressure facing today's young players and teaches the often-overlooked mental skills crucial for success. From building resilience and confidence to developing leadership and emotional control, these tools serve athletes both on and off the pitch. The conversation offers valuable insights for players, coaches, and referees alike. Parkhurst breaks down what makes a great referee from a player's perspective: mutual respect, clear communication, and consistency. He provides practical advice on player-referee interactions, emphasizing respectful dialogue and emotional management during heated moments.Parents will find particular value in Parkhurst's observations about sideline behavior and how it affects both player development and referee retention. His perspective highlights how well-meaning parents often undermine their children's growth by removing opportunities to learn through mistakes and develop decision-making skills.Whether you're a player looking to elevate your mental game, a referee seeking to understand the player's mindset, or a parent supporting a young athlete, this episode delivers practical wisdom from someone who reached soccer's highest levels through intelligence rather than physical dominance. From moving to Mexico as a teenager to play for the Xolos academy to making his MLS breakthrough with Sporting Kansas City, it was never a straightforward path to the pro ranks for Robert Castellanos. Now a free agent with multiple options in front of him as he's proven his value on the pitch, Caste joins the crew to discuss the lessons he's learned, the adversity he's faced, and how that's prepared him for whatever lies ahead. In addition, he touches on his Rooted foundation, which is providing youth players in Palmdale and the Antelope Valley with proper infrastructure to develop their talents. Jimmy Conrad, Charlie Davies, and Tony Meola are joined by CBS Sports' James Benge to break down Antonee Robinson's MOTM performance at Anfield (2:08). Is the Fulham left back world-class (08:02)? With his stock rising, is Liverpool the logical next move (12:53)? And is Jedi even better than Christian Pulisic (18:01)? Then, the crew dive into Folarin Balogun's injury and what his four-month absence means for the USMNT striker (28:05). They also take a temperature check on the USMNT center back pool and debate the point of the January camp (37:25). Finally, the guys run the Trigger Who You Want gauntlet (49:20): Should Gio Reyna be an automatic starter? Is Pulisic too good for AC Milan? Is Chucky Lozano the right move for San Diego FC? And has Charlie finally flipped on Jonathan David?
Note: We had some errors in this episode. Colorado will host the second leg of the first round of Conca Champions, not the first. Also, Matt might have said eight figures instead of seven figures when referring to Miguel Navarro's purchase option. Happy Holidays Colorado Rapids fans! This week on Holding The High Line, there is so much news. The guys banter about LA Galaxy winning MLS Cup and how that changes how we feel about the Rapids losing to them in the first round of the playoffs. We then discuss Colorado acquiring FC Cincinnati center backs Chidozie Awaziem and Ian Murphy. Also, Colorado getting all of Philadelphia Union draft picks for three years is the most MLS trade ever. We then preview the upcoming SuperDraft, discuss the future of past Rapids draft picks, and Sam Bassett hype! Oh, there's a few guys exposed in the MLS Expansion Draft. Red has some scoops on Miguel Navarro potentially staying with Talleres on the purchase option and Andreas Maxsø potentially going to the Middle East. We end the show with some offseason Ask HTHLs. Oh, and Colorado drew LAFC in Conca Champions. Holding The High Line is brought to you by Magic Mind, the world's first performance mental shot. Not quite a complete performance by the Chicago Red Stars, but a win nonetheless! Ally Schlegel is back! Cari Roccaro is playing Center Back and Julia Grosso is finally in the defensive midfield. Things are looking up if the club can grow on this performance. Next up is San Diego in what would've been the Riot Fest match. Sporting Kansas City allowed fans to have hope of a potential turn around for about 3 days after dispatching a terrible San Jose team on the road last Saturday. Unfortunately they followed it up by closing out this very dense stretch of the schedule with a loss in Vancouver and a 1-1 draw at home vs the Pink Dog Food CITY SC team on Saturday night. The good news is, this means Cody is sufficiently grumpy about this team again so you will get the entertainment you expect from this podcast. The secondary transfer window is open and while there is a lot of generalized talk about Sporting KC making a signing or two this summer, very little news of anything concrete has appeared as of yet. We'll discuss what the potential is for additions this summer, and what we should reasonably expect from the team the rest of the year. Tactical corner will be a look into a nuanced, but important change to the shape SKC and Vermes are employing with Pulido and Agada on the field at the same time. It has its positives, but it also has some dependencies that could be impacting the ability to use other players effectively. In Potpourri the KC Current sign a new Center Back, and kick off the Summer Cup with a 3-1 drubbing of Houston in a game that saw both teams reaching deep into their rosters to complete the game. Finally, we look into the beginning of Leagues Cup play as Chicago comes to town on Sunday night.

And the LA Galaxy are already out on the trade market, offloading some players. What does this all add up to? On today's show, hosts Josh Guesman and Eric Vieira discuss the Galaxy's two trades and who they might target in free agency. What kind of reaction does the Galaxy need to find from the 2023 squad? But Josh and Eric will start by acknowledging the elephant in the room. The Galaxy now play in a league where their rivals are champions of the league. What does that mean to a front office that has seen its grip on Los Angeles fall away? And what needs to happen to right the ship? Was Derrick Williams the answer at Center Back? And did Cameron Dunbar have a shot on the first team? Which young player has a chance at being the breakout star in 2023? We've got a lot to cover for an off-season show, and we think the Expansion Draft is the perfect way to talk about how Kevin Cabral will leave the club.
We talk Gio Reyna's game vs Schalke, a rough game for Sergino Dest, and the impact of leaving off Jordan Pefok from the September Roster. We also dive deep into the headspace of top USMNT players Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Sergino Dest heading into the World Cup. 0:00 Intro 1:47 Musah Injury 4:56 Gio Reyna 7:41 Center Back 9:08 Pulisic 11:14 Dest 12:47 McKennie 14:29 Pefok 19:25 Since '76

Bayern Munich's week was filled with craziness. A lackluster effort against Bayer Leverkusen was followed by a thoroughly dominant win over Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League. The news for the club followed a similar up-and-down pattern. The word on injuries was great, but the transfer news was...surprising. Here is what we have on tap to discuss this week: The bad break that Bayern Munich's Plan A in the transfer looks like it as failed: Chelsea center-back looks like he'll sign with FC Barcelona. The Plan B options are not necessarily going to excite many fans as Gleison Bremer and Matthias Ginter could be the next men up. It seems like Bayern Munich has some squad planning and budget issues that are weighing on the folks at Säbener Straße. The tricky situation surrounding Robert Lewandowski. Why thew rumored replacements for Lewandowski probably won't come to fruition. Be sure to stay tuned to Bavarian Podcast Works for all of your up to date coverage on Bayern Munich and Germany.
