In the first season of the USL W League - a pre-professional women's soccer league in the USA - Minnesota Aurora lived up to its name and shone.Nicole Lukic's team topped the Heartland Division, winning 11 of 12 games and drawing the other, scoring 35 goals and boasting the second highest goal difference across all the league's seven divisions.Sadly, they saved their first loss for the championship game, when Tormenta FC beat them 2-1 after extra time. So near, and yet it will have felt so far.The USLW awarded Aurora the Organization of the Year award for its performance both on and off the field and Lukic won Coach of the Year for the unbeaten regular season.Naturally, Lukic, now also the club's sporting director, says she would “trade all of that for winning that final game”, but describes it as “incredible to have that sort of recognition after year one”. Lukic is not only referring to the USL W League's first season, but Aurora's debut campaign, too.Unlike the bulk of teams competing in the league, Aurora was built from the ground up in advance of the league's launch in 2022.Founded in 2021, Aurora is a women-led, community-owned team, the first of its kind in the US. A community round raised over $1 million from more than 3,000 fans in three months. Aurora is owned by people in 48 different states, and eight different countries. When asked what it means to have a group of people so supportive of a venture she is at the forefront of, Lukic said: “It's incredible. It means everything. It's really helped me with my recruiting process.“You feel it when you go to TCO [Stadium, Aurora's home field]. You feel like the community is behind you.

We were more than happy to be wrong about our 3-1 predictions of LAFC beating Orlando City. Call it “taking one for the team,” if you will. What we were even happier about was watching history unfold as the Lions knocked out the mighty west coast juggernaut in penalties after squandering the chance to do it in regulation. The Lions were even the better side for all but about 15 minutes of normal time, but the missed penalty and quick LAFC goal made us all squeamish until Joao Moutinho’s perfect header sent the game to spot kicks. Dave and I break down the thriller — a name that applies to this match more than most 1-1 draws — and give you our Man of the Match selections. We also give you the latest on Dom Dwyer and touch on whether we think he’ll be back in purple again and whether Orlando will sign anyone to replace him for the rest of 2020. Oh, and the MLS regular season might be starting back up shortly after the MLS is Back Tournament wraps up. Eli Hoff from E Pluribus Loonum joined us to give us the Minnesota United perspective of Thursday’s semifinal match-up against the Lions. We talked about old friends Adrian Heath and Kevin Molino a bit and find out what weaknesses Orlando City can exploit. Thanks to Eli for joining us. On the women’s side, the NWSL will reportedly be returning to training in home markets Aug. 7 and potentially playing friendlies or four-team tournaments or some other kind of competition. The Pride’s Carson Pickett helped design a Nike cleat and there’s a new Alex Morgan Barbie doll in the company’s “role model” series. OCB is back in action and the result was familiar even if the performance looked a bit more organized than the 2019 version of the Young Lions. It was OCB’s first game and Tormenta FC’s third, so you’d expect the more veteran Georgia side to be a bit further along in their 2020 trajectory, but there were some positives for the Young Lions. This week’s mailbag features questions about Dwyer, where the LAFC result stacks up, and more. If there’s anything — and we do mean anything —you want us to address on our next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Finally, we finish off the show with our key match-ups and score predictions for OCSC vs. Minnesota United. That’s all for this week, but it’s another gigantic show. We’ll be back next week to recap Orlando City vs. the Loons. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here’s how show No. 208 went down: 0:16 - Orlando City’s 1-1 draw and 5-4 penalty shootout win over LAFC was almost everything we could hope for and the Lions move on. We tell you how they did it. 1:00:02 - Eli Hoff jumps on and gives us the news out of the Minnesota United camp to let us know what to expect on Thursday. 1:23:17 - NWSL news and notes, OCB’s first match of 2020, our mailbag, and our key match-ups and score predictions for Orlando City vs. Minnesota United! One of the best conversations I have ever had with a great dude. Jared is a 24-year-old defensive midfielder or center back originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, where he grew up playing academy soccer. He started his college career at Georgetown in 2013, where he stayed for one season before transferring to Wake Forest University. In 2017, Jared signed his first pro contract with the Charlotte Independence in the USL. After a tough season dealing with a nagging groin injury, he wanted to play consistently. Jared had a friend recommend for him to go play in Sweden to further develop his game. In 2018, Jared returned back to the US to play with Tormenta FC before heading back for another stint in Sweden. In September 2019, Odenbeck signed for the NISA side Stumptown Athletic, located in Charlotte, where he is currently playing. Jared shares some golden nuggets in the podcast, and I am sure you will love this one. Tune in for a LONG & DEEP conversation. Find Jared on Instagram @jaredodenbeck and on Twitter @JaredOdenbeck. He's a great dude and I am sure, if you reach out, he will be more than willing to guide you in the right direction.

Orlando City went from its first home win to its first ever loss to Real Salt Lake in the span of a week. The trip to Utah didn’t go as we’d hoped, and perhaps part of that can be traced back to the starting lineup. We discuss James O’Connor’s team selection, the weirdness of the first RSL goal, Chris Mueller as a starter and much more, plus our Man of the Match selections. The Pride opened their 2019 season and Marc Skinner’s debut as coach didn’t go well. Portland dominated and we discuss that match, what we can expect from Orlando this NWSL season, and how the roster might change as the season goes on. Then we moved discussion to OCB’s first ever USL League One point with a 1-1 draw vs. Tormenta FC and how close it was to three points. It was close. So close. We answered a robust mailbag and also gave our key match-ups and score predictions for this weekend’s game match against the Vancouver Whitecaps. If there’s something you want us to address on our next show, just ask by tweeting it to us @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Here’s how show No. 158 went: 0:16 - Orlando City concedes early again, the subs aren’t soon enough to prevent things from getting worse, and what went wrong. 26:28 - The Pride played their first game under Skinner and although there’s a lot of work to be done, it’s not anything we didn’t expect. Why we’re taking a cautious approach to this NWSL seasons. 42:23 - OCB finally got a point and it was almost three but it might have been a necessary lesson for the Young Lions. 47:41 - The mailbag has questions. We have answers, and beyond. Plus, our predictions for the upcoming game vs. Vancouver. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
