Live Action recently posted a photo on X that shows that a baby developing in the womb is not “just a clump of cells,” even at eight weeks gestation. Though the baby is only about half an inch long and roughly the size of a raspberry, retinas begin to form during this stage, as well as intestines and other organs. This is also the time when fingers and toes start to take shape and the baby gains the ability to flex at the elbows. In about 10 more weeks, the baby's sex can be determined.   To call a preborn baby that is growing and developing in the womb "a clump of cells” is as reductionistic as calling a born human “a clump of cells.” I mean, in one sense it's true, we are all clumps of cells. However, it's an absurdly incomplete picture of what a human being really is.

Summary: When we started our podcast, we always did a native plant spotlight at the end of each episode. We've compiled some of our favorites here so you can get those natives planted and attracting birds and butterflies to your yard!   For our hearing impaired listeners, a transcript of this podcast follows the show notes on Podbean.   Show Notes: Boyce Thompson Arboretum Plant Sale Info: https://btarboretum.org www.gardenia.net/plant/calliadras-california-baja-fairy-duster Hummingbird Plants of the Southwest by Marcy Scott Background bird song:  Naturescapes Backyard Birds www.naturescapes.com   Our email address, please reach out with comments, questions, or suggestions: thefeathereddesert@gmail.com Transcript Host Voice: Welcome to the Feathered Desert a podcast all about desert bird feeding in the Southwest region of the United States.  (bird calls and songs play) Cheryl Into:  when Kiersten and I first started to do these podcasts, we included a plant spotlight at the end.  Now that spring is on the horizon here in the Phoenix area, I thought we would highlight some of our favorite and most successful native plants to attract birds and butterflies. Kiersten:  Perennials Hummingbirds love. Firecracker Penstemon:  This is a showy plant with blossoms of fiery red (a color hummingbirds see very well) tubular flowers.  This plant is an important nectar source for hummingbirds nesting and migrating though your yard.  For much of the year it is a tidy evergreen until the stems start to grow and the blossoms appear.  it requires excellent drainage, full sun, and it heat tolerant. Chluparosa – Is a semi-evergreen shrub with long -blooming tubular flowers in various shades of soft red.  Not only is this plant an extremely important source of nectar for hummingbirds but it is known to attract orioles, warblers, goldfinches, house finches and White-crowned sparrows.  It is also the host plant for the larva of the checkered spot butterfly. Mexican Honeysuckle- Is a handsome hummingbird plant that is a real workhorse, cranking out blooms most of the year.  Red-orange tubular flowers with a distinctive three-lobed lower lips, are extremely valuable for wintering hummingbirds. It has a graceful upward spreading form and bright green heart-shaped leaves. It is a Sonoran Desert native found in sandy washes and rocky canyons bottoms at lower elevations 1,500-3,500 feet.  It is fast growing and likes well-drained fertile soil part to filtered sun depending on the elevations. Cheryl:  Now let's highlight two trees that hummingbirds love. Baja Fairy duster-This is one of my personal favorites, the fairy duster is an evergreen woody shrub/tree with bright red, powder puff flowers.  Blooming year-around with a peak display from spring through fall, the long-lasting and attractive blooms are highly attractive to birds such as verdins, and warblers, hummingbirds, bees and butterflies too.  It is extremely heat tolerant once established, needs well-drained soil, and its water demands are low.  It is virtually pest-free and disease free.  Pruning is generally unnecessary. Desert willow-this graceful tree both perching sites and nectar flowers for hummingbirds.  It has ruffled orchid-like, pale pink to rich burgundy flowers that peak in springtime but often continue throughout the summer.  This lovely tree is visited by hummingbirds and lesser goldfinches.  Lesser goldfinches feed on the fringed seed pods.  With light green willow like leaves and big blossoms this is a lovely addition to the front landscape.  Desert willows tolerate most soils and it is quite drought tolerant, it blossoms best in full sun.  If you water it once or twice a month in the summer that will prolong the tree's blooming.  So, let's talk about butterflies… Kiersten:  Butterfly weed-milkweed VS Butterfly Bush… Butterfly weed-Asclepias tuberosa, commonly known as butterfly weed, is a species of milkweed native to eastern and south western North America.  It is commonly known as butterfly weed because of the butterflies that are attracted to the plant by it's color ad its copious production of nectar.  Clump-forming perennial grows from tuberous roots to a height of one to two feet and is characterized by glossy-green, lance-shaped leaves and clusters of bright- orange- to -yellow blooms that are rich with nectar and pollen. Butterfly bush- Buddleja Davidii or more commonly seen in nurseries as Butterfly Bush is an invasive plant from China. We do not want you to confuse it with the above-mentioned plant Butterfly weed which is a type of milkweed.  It is deciduous shrub that can grow up to 15 ft high.  This bush cone shaped flower clusters at the ends of branches and has been cultivated over the years into many attractive colors such as pink, blue, magenta, purple, and yellow.  In nurseries it is advertised as being a wonderful Plant to attract butterflies and it does attract them but many of the cultivars have lost any real nutrition in their nectar offerings.  It is also only useful to the adult butterfly.  Any native NA butterflies cannot use it as a host plant because it is unfamiliar.  It is highly invasive and grows well in our country.  It's not quite as good at withstanding our desert heat but I have seen it offered in many nurseries in the valley. Once established in your yard it will seed after blooming and those seeds will spread and choke out any native plants nearby that are essential to a butterfly's life cycle.  One more thing it attracts the male Asian mosquito who drink the nectar from the flowers and where the male goes a female follows…waiting to suck your blood. Cheryl-I have two natives to the southwest that will do well in your backyard.  The first one is chocolate flower.  It is a fast-growing bush, grows to 1ftx2ft, full to partial shade, low water once it's established, well-draining soil.  This pretty, yellow daisy-like flower blooms from spring thru fall.  It has no thorns but the flowers have a distinctive chocolate scent.  Great for native bees and butterflies, birds eat the seeds in the fall, great native flower to add some color to a garden.  Right up there with Blanket flower and the Desert marigold. Next is Flattop buckwheat.  I like the name.  this is a shrub that is ever-green and it grows to about 1 foot tall and two feet wide.  It blooms from march to November with a white or pale pink flower.  It prefers full sun and well-drained soil.  It will need only a little water once established with supplemental water during the heat of summer.  Its naturally round form is useful on slopes for controlling soil erosion and needs very little if any pruning.  In the fall its seeds will provide food for birds and other desert animals and it is the host plant for the metalmark Butterfly and the Acmon blue butterfly.  Wonderful for native bees. Kiersten- here's one for the Bats! Parry's Agave (Agave parryi) This plant is native to AZ, NM, and Mexico this agave will produce gray green rosettes that grow 7-20 inches.  The leaves do have marginal teeth and a sharp tip but it makes a great accent plant in the desert as is needs little water and is very low maintenance.  It is a slow grower, so you're in this for the long haul, but when it blooms it is spectacular.  Twenty-foot-tall blooms with 20-30 offshoots that are red in buds and yellow when in full bloom.  It can take full sun and may need water every two weeks in the drought portions of the summer.  Needs very little water in the winter. The main plant will produce offshoots that will grow near by and do well if allowed to spread out a bit.  The off shoots can be dug up and removed if desired, after 5-10 years the agave will bloom and then die.  The off shoots will remain if left alone.  This is a great plant for the Lesser-long Nosed Bat and other nighttime pollinators. Cheryl- So I have a sticky one but its short. Desert hackberry- this is a shrub that is a host plant for several butterflies in the southwest including the American Snout, hackberry Emperor, and the Empress Leilia.  It also has berries that birds such as verdin, Northern mocking bird and Cedar Waxwings love.  This shrub requires low water once established, full sun, good drainage, and room. It can grow to be 8ft high, 10 feet wide but with pruning it will stay contained.  It does have thorns but birds love thorny bushes to keep them safe from predators. Kiersten-Our last plant is the Scrub oak.  We saved the best for last. This is a smaller oak at 8 feet tall and 12 feet wide.  It has leathery gray-green leaves that cover rigid branches.  This oak is native to AZ.  It does best at higher altitudes but can grow in the valley.  It will need supplemental water in the heat of summer and afternoon shade is beneficial but can take full sun at higher altitudes.  Like most sols and should be pruned only to remove dead leaves.  It can make an excellent hedge but it is slow growing.  Dense foliage provides shelter for birds and small reptiles and mammals.  Many desert animals eat the acorns and it is host plant to several desert butterflies.  Just a note of caution:  it is not a good choice for horse properties because acorns are poisonous to horses. Cheryl-Closing What a list!  Remember to think native when you are planning your spring gardening.  You cannot go wrong.  The birds, bees and butterflies will thank you and reward your efforts.  Happy Spring!

The frozen-food coolers in the back remain mostly empty. The store was pretty busy today, with two cashiers open, both with lines.   Next was Home Depot. A 2x4x8 remains at $3.35. They were rather busy around the contractor entrance, but I did not look around the rest of the store, as Sonia was waiting outside while I checked.   Our final stop was Aldi. Our careful buying habits caught up to us this week in a good way, and we escaped the store for less than $50.   Untainted regular at $3.999/gallon. The Outer spiral arm of the Milky Way using Red Clump stars by Namita Uppal et al. on Monday 17 October Aims: Our aim is to provide an observational view of the old Disk structure of the Milky Way galaxy using the distribution of red clump stars. The spiral arms, warp structure, and other asymmetries present in the Disk are re-visited using a systematic study of red clump star counts over the disk of the Galaxy. Methods: We developed a method to systematically extract the red clump stars from 2MASS ($J-K_s, ~J$) colour-magnitude diagram of $1^circ times 1^circ$ bins in $ell times b$ covering the range $40^circ le ell le 320^circ$ and $-10^circ le b le 10^circ$. 2MASS data continues to be important since it is able to identify and trace the red clump stars to much farther distances than any optical survey of the Disk. The foreground star contamination in the selected sample is removed by utilising the accurate astrometric data from Gaia EDR3 and astrophysical parameters from Gaia DR3. Results: We have generated a face-on-view (XY-plane) of the Galaxy depicting the density distribution and count ratio above and below the Galactic plane. The resulting overdensity of red clump stars traces the continuous morphology of the Outer arm from the second to the third Galactic quadrant. This is the first study to map the Outer arms across the disk using red clump stars. Through this study, we are able to trace the Outer arm well into the 3rd Galactic quadrant for the first time. Apart from the spiral structures, we also see a wave-like asymmetry above and below the Galactic plane with respect to longitudes, indicating a warp structure. The warp structure is studied systematically by tracing the ratio of red clump stars above and below the Galactic plane. We provide the first direct observational evidence of the asymmetry in the Outer spiral arms confirming that the spiral arms traced by the older population are also warped similar to the Disk. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.08206v1

Galaxy Zoo: Clump Scout -- Design and first application of a two-dimensional aggregation tool for citizen science by Hugh Dickinson et al. on Monday 10 October Galaxy Zoo: Clump Scout is a web-based citizen science project designed to identify and spatially locate giant star forming clumps in galaxies that were imaged by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Legacy Survey. We present a statistically driven software framework that is designed to aggregate two-dimensional annotations of clump locations provided by multiple independent Galaxy Zoo: Clump Scout volunteers and generate a consensus label that identifies the locations of probable clumps within each galaxy. The statistical model our framework is based on allows us to assign false-positive probabilities to each of the clumps we identify, to estimate the skill levels of each of the volunteers who contribute to Galaxy Zoo: Clump Scout and also to quantitatively assess the reliability of the consensus labels that are derived for each subject. We apply our framework to a dataset containing 3,561,454 two-dimensional points, which constitute 1,739,259 annotations of 85,286 distinct subjects provided by 20,999 volunteers. Using this dataset, we identify 128,100 potential clumps distributed among 44,126 galaxies. This dataset can be used to study the prevalence and demographics of giant star forming clumps in low-redshift galaxies. The code for our aggregation software framework is publicly available at: https://github.com/ou-astrophysics/BoxAggregator arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.03684v1

Conditions for Clump Survival in High-z Disc Galaxies by Avishai Dekel et al. on Monday 12 September We study the survival versus disruption of the giant clumps in high-redshift disc galaxies, short-lived (S) versus long-lived (L) clumps and two L sub-types, via analytic modeling tested against simulations. We develop a criterion for clump survival, with or without their gas, based on a predictive survivability parameter $S$. It compares the energy sources by supernova feedback and gravitational contraction to the clump binding energy and losses by outflows and turbulence dissipation. The clump properties are derived from Toomre instability, approaching virial and Jeans equilibrium, and the supernova energy deposit is based on an up-to-date bubble analysis. For moderate feedback levels, we find that L clumps exist with circular velocities $sim!50, km, s^{-1}$ and masses $geq!10^8, M_odot$. They are likely in galaxies with circular velocities $geq !200, km, s^{-1}$, consistent at $z sim 2$ with the favored stellar mass for discs, $geq!10^{9.3}, M_odot$. L clumps favor disc gas fractions $geq!0.3$, low-mass bulges and redshifts $z!sim! 2$. The likelihood of L clumps is reduced if the feedback is more ejective, e.g., if the supernovae are optimally clustered, if radiative feedback is very strong, if the stellar initial mass function is top-heavy, or if the star-formation-rate efficiency is particularly high. A sub-type of L clumps (LS), which lose their gas in several free-fall times but retain bound stellar components, may be explained by a smaller contraction factor and stronger external gravitational effects, where clump mergers increase the SFR efficiency. The more massive L clumps (LL) retain most of their baryons for tens of free-fall times with a roughly constant star-formation rate. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.04462v1

There's only one Jackie Kashian. Maybe there are other people with that name, but only one like this; a great comic, funny, thoughtful, an industry. From growing up in Wisconsin with neigbors like Mrs. Grubschmidt and Mr. Clump, to growing up emotionally, we talk about those kinds of things on this episode. Jackie tells stories about finding a really good therapist who told her to “do the work” because this is a very expensive place just to workshop a joke. And although she did get a one person show out of it, she actually did do the work. And, making peace with parents, and family members; processing that rage that many people have about their upbringing. Realizing that no one knows what the hell they're doing and mostly people are trying to do their best, however not good at it they are. And that out of this funk, come hours of stand up comedy that you can write about flawed humanity. She goes on to talk about perspective and the ability to make choices; like having an out of body experience, muscle memory that says “wait a minute, you can do this differently.” And we always talk about Jackie's dad who is the ultimate salesman, and a man who knows how to live it up! There is a point in the show where Jackie compares an everyday thing to living in a snuff film, listen for that. Just a really good conversation, with a really interesting, multi-faceted person. Jennifer and I also talk about roles that we play in life, how to question and change the roles we don't have to play. Questioning feelings, thoughts, behaviors, that we can step outside ourselves and do that. We can witness ourselves and be curious about it. And I celebrate the amazing lack of boundaries in my family growing up. Entire conversations while in the bathroom. And if you want to practice setting boundaries, come up with a boundary ahead of time, and you can talk positives before setting the boundary. You can rehearse anything and any situation. It's not always perfect or smooth, but just the awareness that you can do that, can change a lot. Connect before you correct; as Jennifer says. My example “I love when we talk, but when it goes on for too long, I feel like I need to walk in front of a train.” Find all about Jackie, her podcasts, tours, events, social media, happenings at https://www.jackiekashian.com/ and all of Jennifer's amazing work, media, classes and services at https://connectedparenting.com/ take care, stay well and live it up!

Attempting to take over the company before she even underwent orientation, she finds herself ousted by the head of Apocalypse Inc., The Authoritarian, who has used her mind-reading powers to discover Dr. von Misery's greatest fear (it's public speaking)! But the evils of Apocalypse, Inc., don't end there -- they want to destroy the world; which would make Gerda von Misery's quest for world domination pretty impossible... Now, with her lab repossessed and no job options, she must reunite with her loyal hunchman-- I mean, henchman, Seymour to bring the retired superhero Captain Overman out of retirement and fight evil WITH evil! Featuring: Cate Ludin as Gerda von Misery; Sarah Suta as Clump, the Robot, and The Authoritarian; Harry Jahnke as Seymour Swerdlow and C'p'n Chick O'Ree; Pol Llovet as Captain Overman and Agent Doldrum; and Keith Suta as Narciso, Tectonicus, the Boss, and Mr. Announcer! Live sound effects by Kyle Suta and Liam Mayer! Original music composed and performed by Garrett Robinson! Recorded live at Bozeman, Montana's historic Ellen Theatre on October 8, 2016! We apologize for the less-than stellar audio quality of this particular episode -- though not up to our usual standards, we wanted you to be able to experience this once-in-a-lifetime performance and hope that it will prove diverting and entertaining despite its technical limitations!

Bill Martin, is the proud owner of a small boulder of an island off the coast of Florida called "Morgan's Island." It is a deserted useless rock to Bill, but by pure chance he stumbles across a treasure map pointing to his island. The map is presented to him by a peg-legged old sailor, Tobias Clump, after Bill and his friend "Stuff" Oliver saves the man from drowning. Clump was pushed into the water by a "phantom," who got away with part of the treasure map. Clump tells them that the map shows the way to infamous buccaneer Sir Henry Morgan's twenty million dollar treasure. Soon after this, Bill's cousin George offers to buy the whole island for the amount of $20,000, but Bill isn't willing to sell. Instead he brings the map to a reputed cartographer named Jasper who claims that the map is fake—it's a very well-made forgery. Letting go of the thought of the legendary treasure, Bill instead thinks of making some money by starting a "treasure hunt" cruise to his island, for fifty dollars apiece. He involves Stuff in the plans and together they start out for the island to plant a fake treasure for the tourists to find. On their way they are involved in a traffic accident, and by "accident" meet the posh Wendy Creighton and her boy toy, Thurman Coldwater. Since Bill is a little short of money he persuades Wendy to take his treasure cruise. The phantom that stole part of the treasure map from Clump reappears and warns Wendy and tells her that she will die if she stays on. She doesn't take this seriously, but the phantom appears once more, this time in her bedroom at night, and warns her again. Everyone believes that someone is pretending to be the ghost in an effort to scare them all off. A man in a cape kills Rod in front of Arleen, but when she gets back to the rest of the group the private investigator McGoon suspects her of being the killer. Bill suspects Tobias, who is still missing, and a "footprint" from a peg-leg is found near Rod's body. It turns out there is big reward set for the dead gangster, "dead or alive". Tobias reunites with the group and tells of a key he has found. It is supposed to unlock a torture chamber in the castle, where Sir Henry Morgan's treasure is hidden. The group enters the chamber but finds only a single gold coin. As they return to the castle's main hall there is a note on the table saying "nine left". The cross-bow fires again, but misses Clump by an inch, killing the phantom instead. It turns out the phantom was no other than an old shipmate of Clump's. On the phantom's body they find the rest of the treasure map.Bill, Stuff and Clump go to find the treasure, leaving George and Wendy to themselves in the castle. They find a new note saying "eight left" and when George tries to find the anonymous killer, Wendy is abducted by an unknown person. When the rest of the group is back at the castle they find George murdered inside one of the armor suits. Bill realizes that Jasper must be the killer, but when Bill confronts him with Rod's gun in his hand, it turns out the gun is unloaded and Jasper gets the advantage. Bill, Stuff and Wendy escape, but only to find themselves trapped in a secret passage inside the castle walls. As they get rescued by Clump, it turns out the passage leads directly to Sir Henry Morgan's treasure. Jasper follows and finds them, forcing them on to the treasure chamber. As they open the final passage door an axe falls down to kill Jasper. The rest of the group enter the treasure chamber and opens the chest, only to find the skeleton of Sir Henry Morgan himself. Disappointed the group members make their way back to the surface, where they meet a government agent, who offers to buy the whole island from Bill in order to build a naval base. After all the mysteries are solved, Bill and Wendy become a pair, making Bill worth $7,000,000.

Time management is an essential skill, and hour blocking is an easy and powerful way to master this skill. You can use it to block off hours in your schedule and get more things finished. It enables you to take control of the minutes in each day. Follow this process to take advantage of this valuable technique: 1. Start with planning. Make a list of all of your important tasks for the week. Then, narrow this list down to three to five essential tasks. · Be realistic about your planning. Avoid thinking that you can do a million tasks in one day or week. 2. Block your hours. After you have a shortlist of tasks, block the hours on your schedule. This is called time blocking and essentially requires you to take each hour and assign a task or item to it. · Clump related tasks together and add them to specific blocks of time. · Remember to schedule lunches and breaks. Taking time to rest your mind and body is important! Your breaks allow you to get back to your tasks with renewed energy. 3. Reduce distractions. Hour blocking demands that you eliminate distractions, so you don't lose focus. · Figure out what your main distractions are. Do you waste time on social media or constantly check your phone? Do you spend hours in your email inbox and respond to every message instantly? · Eliminate or reduce these distractions. You may want to set aside a specific chunk of time each day to handle your social media, email inbox, and other tasks that distract you from your more essential actions. · Also, when you're working, let others know that you're busy so they can limit their interruptions. 4. Keep the time blocks flexible. Unless you know the exact amount of time each task will take, it's important to keep the time blocks flexible. This will also enable you to take care of other important things that come up with a minimum amount of stress or changes to your schedule. 5. Review your time blocks regularly. Make adjustments as needed. If your tasks change, or you find that they take more or less time than you thought, modify your time blocks to take the new information into account. · Reviewing your time blocks will also give you the chance to see when you're most productive. If you do your best work in the morning, schedule more important tasks during these hours. Reviews will help you evaluate your productivity levels and decide which parts need attention. · Another advantage of doing reviews is that it gives you the chance to see if your reminders are working or if they need to be changed. Use alerts on your phone or computer, sticky notes, or traditional alarms to remind you that it's time to move to the next task. The key is to find something that works for you. Effective time management can help you finish more tasks each day and feel more accomplished. Hour blocking is a useful method for anyone who is interested in greater productivity, either at home or at work. Roy Clayton Uberesult.com
