The Rhodes Jewish community was an ancient one, and it flourished with the arrival of Spanish exiles following the expulsion of 1492 and the Ottoman takeover in 1522. Prominent in Mediterranian commerce, the Jewish community grew, and had many rabbis from the Land of Israel serve at the community's helm. A tragic story in Rhodes's past was the Rhodes blood libel of 1840 which threatened the local Jew's safety. Following the Italian takeover in 1912, a steady stream of emigration increased with many settling in Seattle and Rhodesia (today's Zimbabwe). Rhodes Jews were to become pillars of the Rhodesia Jewish community for the bulk of the 20th century. Meanwhile the remaining Jews in Rhodes sustained the Nazi occupation of the island in 1943, and in the summer of 1944 were deported in its entirety to Auschwitz. The glorious Jewish community of Rhodes came to a tragic end. This week, Abla picks Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult, a sort of parallel documentary to the previously discussed The Vow, also about Keith Raniere and NXIVM but more explosive and revelatory and Egyptian horror series Paranormal. She mentions award-winning documentary Tell Spring Not to Come This Year available to watch online all this month here. Coco Green talks about: The China Hustle (2017) Like the 2016 documentary Betting on Zero, about short sellers and their suspicions of fraud in the multilevel marketing company Herbalife, The China Hustle has a similar focus, but with Chinese companies running a similar scam. It's believed that many of the reverse merger companies are overvaluing their companies by as much as 1000% to raise money in an IPO. After traders make their commission and companies get the cash, the value drops leaving any existing stockholders with worthless stock. And... Richard Wershe Jr. case White Boy Rick film (2018) White Boy (2017) documentary Richard Wershe Jr. became an FBI informant at the age of 14—easy stuff like identifying dealers and drug houses in his Detroit neighbourhood. His father, Richard Wershe Sr., was gun dealer and involved in the criminal world, so he negotiated the paid informant job on his behalf—rationalised it as they were targeting the more dangerous drug dealers The case stands out because unlike the dirty cops, hired hitmen, and drug kingpins Wershe's testimony and narcing put away, at age 17 his drug dealing saw him receive a life sentence. Ultimately released in 2018 after serving more than 30 years, it's a story of black political power in Detroit. Rick Wershee Jr doesn't have the political, social or economic power to fight his charges—nor was he about to move his whiteness beyond symbolism to access the white neighbourhoods, schools, jobs, and wealth that would've allowed him to serve ‘white time' that he otherwise would've been entitled to. —————— We discuss: His House (2020) The film tells the story of a refugee couple from South Sudan settling into English life as they await a decision on their asylum application. Spoiler, to escape the genocide they kidnapped a child to make their way onto a bus that was ahead of soldiers carrying out atrocities. Then, in their journey across the Mediterranian, the boat overturned and the husband, Bol, let the child drown while saving his wife, Rial. They're now haunted by many things, but mostly their descent into brutality in an effort to save their own lives. The Social Dilemma (2019) A docu-fiction on the ills and dangers of social media, which includes talking heads from among the highest echelons of the tech community, many of which were at the helm of major social media networks and have since then left and are critical of the role it plays in disseminating false news, polarising opinion and disintegrating social relations. ————— Sign up to our newsletter at the bottom of the homepage. Anna Marie loves the brain and it wasn’t until she got her brain right that she started to experience true happiness and success. Your brain uses more oxygen per unit of tissue than any other organ. Your brain also uses more energy per unit of tissue than any other tissue. Staying hydrated helps your brain function. Students in a study had higher test scores when they brought a water bottle to a test. Keeping your brain hydrated helps improve problem-solving, improves mood, memory, and can help prevent headaches. How much water should you drink? Half your weight in ounces of water daily and add 4-6 ounces for every 15 minutes for exercise you do. Cut back on the sugar and carbohydrate intake. High carbs and sugar are not a friend to our brain. They impact our brain function. We eat too many carbs in America. You shouldn’t be consuming high carbs and sugars in the morning. Sugar is hidden. The 61 names of sugar are in the link below. 51% of our kiddos lunches are consisting of wheat aka sugar when it is converted into the body. Sugar is addictive and lights up our reward pathways. Sugar impacts our insulin levels and impacts our mood-boosting neurotransmitter serotonin. When we develop insulin resistance this impairs our neurotransmitters in the brain that depend on insulin to help neurotransmitters. High Carbs and high endurance running left Anna Marie inflamed and depressed. She started to add more proteins and fats into her diet while lowering carb intake and she felt a major shift in her brain and body - towards happiness. Diets that work well with brain function are lower-carb diets, keto, Mediterranian, and anti-inflammatory. Find what diet works for you and what foods do not cause you to go into an inflammatory response. Skip packaged foods and eat real foods. Try to go for a week without eating packaged foods. Tips to restore brain health: stay hydrated, limit sugar and carb intake, try supplements. Supplements like curcumin, resveratrol, Ginko, decaffeinated green tea, b-vitamins, and some good omega. Links below in show notes. Also, take time to breathe. Take deep breaths and sometime each day to practice some slow breathing. Lastly, exercise daily to force blood flow to the brain. Try moving the body for two minutes four times a day. Reflect on how your brain and body feel after. You may experience better mental clarity, more energy, and better brain function. Monologue Dr. Joel Wallach begins the show discussing the eight dementias. Outlining each and explaining which nutrients are deficient to cause that particular dementia. Stating they all can be prevented and reversed through nutritional supplementation and lifestyle changes. Contending that most all disease states are due to nutritional deficiencies. Pearls of Wisdom Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding a study of the Mediterranian diet. Researchers divided nearly 300 obese participants into 2 groups one group was put on the Mediterranian diet. The second group were put on a low fat diet and followed for 18 months. Using a MRI before, during and after to map out fat deposits around the organs. Finding those on the Mediterranian diet had significantly decreased their hepatic fat deposits compared to the group on the low fat diet. Callers Madrew has a friend diagnosed with meniere's disease. We're heading back in time, to the land of the pharaohs and the valley of the Dead. We don't have to go far. Right here in Baltimore, a 3,000 year old mummy, fondly named Mery (----The Beloved----), has found a home at The Walter's Art Museum. Katie talks with Lisa Anderson-Zhu, associate curator of the Mediterranian.Along with the history of Mery, we'll learn about Egyptian mummification processes, funerary practices, and spiritual beliefs.
At some point, we will get back on track. But listen as we discuss how early trees might have grown, flies that are attracted to the complex mating calls of a Panamanian tungara frog, Mediterranian nudibranhs that engage in kleptopredation, and a surprisingly cool study of how mosquitos avoid getting swatted after eating.

Jesse interviews Ariana Saraha - whose rich voice and exquisite compositions take the listener on a mystical and soulful journey. Her work can be related to that of Loreena McKinnett and Dead Can Dance. She is earthy, ethereal, and spellbinding in a way that escorts listeners to other realms untouched by day to day living. Ariana has studied and performed music from the Mediterranian, Middle East, and India; and weaves that in with Celtic-tinged original compositions. Her music has an enchanting blend of raw wildness with heartfelt intimacy which comes through in her exquisite vocals. Ariana's lyrics are like ceremony in motion; honoring creation, cycles, vulnerability, passages, and the workings of the universe. She is a siren for the soulfully seeking; blending passion and purity in a way that awakens and enlivens truth within. We will be exploring the music and thoughts of Ariana.
