Sarah Morris and Doug Collins treated us to three live songs in the SmartStartMN studio. We shared "Plinko" stories, "petting the Ginko" and much much more. They are both old friends of the show, so this one is particularly silly. They will be at the White Squirrel the last Wednesday of every month until the end of time. Enjoy!

This panel presentation introduces an ongoing project to recover and translate the Japanese-language writings of the Issei novelist and teacher Ginko Okazaki (pen-name of Masue Shinozaki Orimo, 1895-1973). Ginko was part of a cohort of highly educated Japanese women who emigrated to the United States in the 1920s. Alan K. Ota, nephew of Ginkos daughter, will present on how the study of Ginkos life and work may offer insights to aspiring artists, activists, and teachers as they confront new forms of oppression and ultranationalism in the 21st century. Andrew Way Leong (UC Berkeley) will present on the ongoing work involved in bringing Ginkos work to a contemporary English-language readership. Talk will feature a pre-recorded reading by Sophie Oda, great-granddaughter of Ginko Ozaki, of a short excerpt from Soil of Salinas.

You asked for Ginko to return with a life update, and here it is, just in time to wish them a Happy Birthday today! If you haven't heard Ginko's first interview from two years ago, scroll back to find the episode titled "La Vie Boheme" to hear about how their trans art was censored in our art community, so that you can enjoy today's episode all about how they've found their place by creating their own space, holding events, and falling in love with their own trans journey. We were flying by the seat of our pants for this episode and we focused more on quality friend time than quality sound or script, and you hear it. But sometimes, you just need to hear two friends have a conversation about sexuality over bottled water and baby snacks and occasionally a dog drinking water in the back ground, a football game I can't escape from the other room, and a baby who doesn't let me leave his sight!Support the show

Hello, everyone. Welcome or welcome back to 3-minute Japanese. We are staying with the topic, which is money. Today's subtheme is “silver.” Silver in Japanese is “gin,” and gold is “kin.” The word for bank in Japanese is “ginko”, which literally means silver shop. Why is it “gingko” and not “kinko”? The word “Ginko” goes back to 1872, when the Japanese National Bank Act was enacted. The regulation was based on the original act, which is from the U.S. The word “bank” was translated as “ginko.” The translation could have been gold shop “kinko”, but the scholars who were involved in the translation at the time agreed on “ginko” as it sounds smoother. On the side note, the origin of “bank” is believed to have come from the word “Banco,” which means "bench” in Italian. The word goes back to 12th Century in Northern Italy where the center of international trade and culture were during the period. That's it for today. Thanks for listening. In the next episode, I would like to talk about the connection between money and the kanji for sea shell, “kai”. Stay tuned. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/juliasachiko/message
More than one-third of the U.S. population of women is peri or post-menopause. Driven by a significant change in hormones, many women in this stage of life experience decreased libido, changes in sexual function, difficulty with sleep, and memory decline. A recent study looked at the effects of aromatherapy or a mindfulness intervention, or the combination of the two, and their impact on sexual function. Not surprisingly, aromatherapy was shown to be helpful. Study Design One hundred thirty-two postmenopausal women were divided among four groups: Aromatherapy + Routine Care (standard medical care) Mind-Body Intervention + Aromatherapy Placebo Aromatherapy + Mind-Body Intervention Routine Care + Aromatherapy Placebo The women were 50-60 years old, hadn't used hormone therapy in at least the previous six months, had moderate anxiety with some sexual dysfunction, and were otherwise healthy. The aromatherapy groups inhaled two to three drops of a lavender-bergamot essential oil blend three times per day for eight weeks. The blend was made with essential oils and a 60% ethanol solution. It contained a 0.04% concentration of bergamot and a 5% concentration of lavender, so it was pretty diluted compared to two to three drops of pure essential oils. Even with such a dilution, the essential oil blend led to significant positive outcomes for the women. Study Results At the end of the study, the Mindfulness-Based Intervention and the Aromatherapy groups experienced improvements in sexual function and depression. Interestingly, eight weeks after the study, only the aromatherapy group showed continued improvements. Studies show that aromatherapy stimulates the release of endorphins, which contribute to reductions in pain, stress, and anxiety while increasing relaxation. Hickey M, Bryant C, Judd F. Evaluation and management of depressive and anxiety symptoms in midlife. Climacteric. 2012;15(1):3-9. doi:10.3109/13697137.2011.620188 According to the study's authors: The mechanism of action of these essential oils is two main ways: The first is through the olfactory pathway, which stimulates the receptors located in the olfactory bulb and transmits the olfactory message to the limbic system. This system is the brain's emotional center and is effective on pulse rate, blood pressure, respiratory system, and stress response. The second way is through skin absorption. Molecules of essential oils are absorbed through the skin over 20-40 min. Mojtehedi M, et al. Other studies reinforce the findings in this one. Rose, fennel, geranium, and bitter orange have been shown to improve menopause-related symptoms as well, as has Ginko biloba. Read also: Lavender Essential Oil for Anxiety and Depression My Thoughts The results of this study aren't surprising, as so many other previous studies have found similar effects, not only for women during and post-menopause but also for libido, anxiety, and other mental health effects in both men and women of most age groups. The effects of the Mindfulness-Based Intervention are also interesting, though this isn't a topic I write about. If it's something of interest for you, I recommend finding a practitioner who specializes in it. Regarding aromatherapy, I want to point out some crucial points. First, the study participants used the oils multiple times per day, consistently. Your body metabolizes essential oils relatively quickly. This differs from many drugs designed to release into your system over many hours. You can't expect them to work on symptoms like those related to menopause if you only use them once per day or if you use them inconsistently. Second, this study does not suggest that only lavender and bergamot are effective. Hundreds of essential oils are available, some of which you may find repulsive and others you'll enjoy. Lavender and bergamot are well-studied, in part because they're inexpensive and readily available.
This week Anna is joined by Dale Nash from Pawable to discuss the first collagen (Collar-gen) for dogs. As the market booms in humans for collagen (and for good reason) it's important to understand that just as it depletes in us as we age, the same is true in our dogs. Not only 100% natural, the Collar-gen is species appropriate and easily absorbed through the gut. As a very important structural protein abundant in all our cells, it helps with mobility, skin & coat and digestion. The success of Collar-gen since its launch earlier this year is testament to its efficacy, vouched for by Anna's dogs Prudence and Mr Binks. Her cat Gremlin is also taking it, proving how it can be taken by any mammal. NEW to Pawable's range is Calming which is a supplement packed with a combination of anti-inflammatories and anti-bacterials that combine to boost the immune system, respiration, and brain health. Like a multi-vitamin, it offers a multi-purpose supplement combining of herbs like Thyme, Chamomile, and Ginko along with Phytoplankton, Coconut oil, Gogi berries. Offering value for money per serving, it's something to think about for Christmas.Instagram: @pawableukTwitter: @pawableukFor more information go to pawable.co.uk and use the promo code adogslife for a 10% discount. For more about Anna go to annawebb.co.ukMusic and production by Mike Hanson for Pod People ProductionsCover art by JaijoCover photo by Rhian Ap Gruffydd at Gruff PawtraitsTo advertise on or sponsor A Dog's Life email: info@theloniouspunkproductions.com

Now I am back in New York. A city where I used to live and study at. A city that I used to hate and love at the same time.5年过去了,如今我又回到了纽约,一个我过去生活和学习过的城市,一个曾让我欢喜让我忧的城市。Despite many life changes I've gone through, the Big Apple remains the same: imposing skyscrapers, comings and goings of New Yorkers of different races, and their aloofness mixed with occasional friendliness. As an outsider, you can sense such a paradox from just their eyes even though most parts of their faces are covered by a mask in COVID time. In this era of the pandemic, most have hidden their adventurous spirits in the closet of their hearts and international travels become a rarity. So my visit to New York against this backdrop had my family worried especially when the Omicron of COVID was hitting the Big Apple. Yet, I still chose to come to New York. An omen directed me here. It'd told me I should come here to find a hidden "treasure". As for whether I've found the treasure or not here, it is another story. Maybe I'll turn into a story into my first fiction. Today's protagonist is not me. It's Carlos. Though it was mid-December in New York, the city was still in the colors of fall. The Ginko trees alongside the narrow street of Manhattan were still dotted by their last canary leaves. Hudson River under sunset was like a crumpled napkin, showing wrinkles of orange and navy blue. New Yorkers, donning colorful garments—some even wore shorts and short skirts in day time—constituted the most lively colors in this metropolis painting. And of course, my friend and I were also fortunate dots in this picture as well. It was a Friday morning. We were walking in Central Park. I was still quite spent from the recent long international flight from China to New York. Such a man-made forest in the middle of the busiest and crowded city in the world was a perfect place to forget all my traveling fatigues and sorrows in my life. My rooted shyness was defrosted a little thanks to the good company of my friend and children's laughter in the park. Then my friend decided to take me to a place in the park. Her secret go-to place. Knowing my friend well, I knew I'd be regular at this place as well even though I had no idea what'd happen and whom we'd meet in this secret spot. It was an underground hallway under a bridge. The mosaic roof and wall tiles and the Roman columns would fool you to believe that you were in Europe. In the middle of the spacious hallway sat an empty chair. Oh, nooooo... He's not here today." My friend broke the silence in the hallway."Who's not here?""The guitarist. I take you here to listen to him." A disappointment showed in her voice."Aw...It's ok. We will come back for another day."“噢,不。 We walked inside and around the hallway for a while. As we were about to find our next soothing corner in the city, a mellow sound of classic guitar made our eyes open in astonishment. Could it be ...?" The same inner voice asked us as we shared a look.“难道是?” It was him. A middle-aged man in his red down coat, holding his guitar that had seen better days, sat on the chair that was empty before. Even with his mask on, you could know that he was a man of many stories. His fingers were dancing fast yet softly on the guitar board, producing a very mellow version of Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Merry Christmas, Mr. Laurence". His taste in music was as good as his skill and the softness in his eyes. We stayed for two more tunes amidst comings and goings of others. But just as we clapped and readied ourselves to put some money in the donation box in front of him, he played another tune. A tune so familiar to Chinese ears, "The Moon Represents My Heart". My friend and I shared a look with a big reticent smile under our masks. With great appreciation to the musician, we hummed along with the guitarist's beautiful rendition of this old Chinese love song. I knew what was on her mind and so did she. Finally, we walked towards him. I was still shy, but Carlos' softness in the corners of his kind eyes melted my shyness completely. Yes, his name is Carlos and he is from Chile. He'd played in this spot for the last 10 years. And his worn guitar is 28 years old, almost as good as me. But I'm sure the soul that lives in his guitar has seen and listened more than mine. Carlos asked me what I did for a living and how I liked New York now. I told him I was building my own mobile bookstore and would be living in my van while touring the world. And I told him I'd prefer to live in a quiter place than a big city like New York. He shared a story after hearing mine. It was about a homeless person he knew in the park. He used to live in the park, feeding on the overflow of leftover food wasted by the city. He told Carlos that one can never die of hunger in New York because of how much food people waste every day. Since hunger is not an issue, he moved to the mountains near New York as he wanted to live a quieter life now. Homeless as he was, but he sounded like one very happy man in the words of Carlos. Besides his music, Carlos taught me another life lesson: "choose life". As a farewell gift, he played my friends' favorite composer's piece--Ennio Morricone's "Love Theme" featured in the movie "Cinema Paradiso". After this final tune, we hugged him goodbye and left with warm tears in our eyes… You might ask. Nothing is more beautiful than the love flowing among humanities.
