Sam, a software developer with 30 years of experience spanning companies from startups to AWS, shares his approach to applying clean architecture principles with Python while maintaining the language's pragmatic nature. The conversation explores the balance between architectural rigor and practical development, the critical relationship between architecture and testability, and how clean architecture principles can enhance AI-assisted coding workflows. Sam emphasizes that clean architecture isn't an all-or-nothing approach but a set of principles that developers can adapt to their context, with the core value lying in thoughtful dependency management and clear domain modeling.RECOMMENDED BOOKSSam Keen • Clean Architecture with Python • https://amzn.to/4pBT5g0Fabrizio Romano & Heinrich Kruger • Learn Python Programming • https://amzn.to/4myLBItUncle Bob • Clean Code • https://amzn.to/3soPO6kUncle Bob • Clean Architecture • https://amzn.to/3x0gjBQEric Evans • Domain-Driven Design • https://amzn.to/3tnGhwmNaomi Ceder • The Quick Python Book • https://amzn.to/3zwdDOaLuciano Ramalho • Fluent Python • https://amzn.to/3oSw2jeDavid Beazley • Python Distilled (Developer's Library) • https://amzn.to/3QjNBEvSaleem Siddiqui • Learning Test-Driven Development • https://amzn.to/35OMb3nMaciej «MJ» Jedrzejewski • Master Software Architecture • https://leanpub.com/master-software-architectureBlueskyTwitterInstagramLinkedInFacebookCHANNEL MEMBERSHIP BONUSJoin this channel to get early access to videos & other perks:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCs_tLP3AiwYKwdUHpltJPuA/joinLooking for a unique learning experience?Attend the next GOTO conference near you! Jodi Wilson is a bestselling author of four books, a health journalist and postpartum doula. Several years ago, she and her family packed their lives into a caravan, and set off in search of adventure, and a more simple life. After two years on the road they put down roots in Tasmania. It is here where she's embraced gardening, and written her most recent book, A Brain That Breathes, out today. Jodi lives, writes and gardens with her partner and their four children on the land of the punnilerpanner people in north western Tasmania Before we get to this thought-provoking chat, Emily and Madeleine are drinking Archie Rose Straight Dry gin with some home made purple elderflower cordial. Emily is regretting purchasing a Ginko tree, and the agapanthus keep rearing their ugly head. She is loving her Cerastium tomentosum - snow in summer - and Maddie's cutting is also doing quite well. Maddie is obsessed with Sage, and wants to propagate more. She's also tried her hand at sage sticks. She's got a picnic blanket in the post and is excited for more outdoor eating-and-drinking sessions. Calendula is back, and in some beautiful colours, and she is recommending Why Women Grow, by Alice Vincent. Jodi has a HUGE list of books she recommends for summer, and or anytime. We've already read a couple of them and they are excellent. Can highly recommend her recommendations! -The Mushroom Tapes by Chloe Hooper, Helen Garner, and Sarah Krasnostein -Heart the Lover by Lily King -Sandwich and Wreck by Catherine Newman -The Octopus and I and A Catalogue of Love by Erin Hortle -The Hiding Place by Kate Mildenhall -The Ten Year Affair by Erin Somers -Consider Yourself Kissed by Jessica Stanley We're also banging on and singing the praises of libraries, AGAIN!

Sarah Morris and Doug Collins treated us to three live songs in the SmartStartMN studio. We shared "Plinko" stories, "petting the Ginko" and much much more. They are both old friends of the show, so this one is particularly silly. They will be at the White Squirrel the last Wednesday of every month until the end of time. Enjoy!

This panel presentation introduces an ongoing project to recover and translate the Japanese-language writings of the Issei novelist and teacher Ginko Okazaki (pen-name of Masue Shinozaki Orimo, 1895-1973). Ginko was part of a cohort of highly educated Japanese women who emigrated to the United States in the 1920s. Alan K. Ota, nephew of Ginkos daughter, will present on how the study of Ginkos life and work may offer insights to aspiring artists, activists, and teachers as they confront new forms of oppression and ultranationalism in the 21st century. Andrew Way Leong (UC Berkeley) will present on the ongoing work involved in bringing Ginkos work to a contemporary English-language readership. Talk will feature a pre-recorded reading by Sophie Oda, great-granddaughter of Ginko Ozaki, of a short excerpt from Soil of Salinas.

You asked for Ginko to return with a life update, and here it is, just in time to wish them a Happy Birthday today! If you haven't heard Ginko's first interview from two years ago, scroll back to find the episode titled "La Vie Boheme" to hear about how their trans art was censored in our art community, so that you can enjoy today's episode all about how they've found their place by creating their own space, holding events, and falling in love with their own trans journey. We were flying by the seat of our pants for this episode and we focused more on quality friend time than quality sound or script, and you hear it. But sometimes, you just need to hear two friends have a conversation about sexuality over bottled water and baby snacks and occasionally a dog drinking water in the back ground, a football game I can't escape from the other room, and a baby who doesn't let me leave his sight!Support the show

Hello, everyone. Welcome or welcome back to 3-minute Japanese. We are staying with the topic, which is money. Today's subtheme is “silver.” Silver in Japanese is “gin,” and gold is “kin.” The word for bank in Japanese is “ginko”, which literally means silver shop. Why is it “gingko” and not “kinko”? The word “Ginko” goes back to 1872, when the Japanese National Bank Act was enacted. The regulation was based on the original act, which is from the U.S. The word “bank” was translated as “ginko.” The translation could have been gold shop “kinko”, but the scholars who were involved in the translation at the time agreed on “ginko” as it sounds smoother. On the side note, the origin of “bank” is believed to have come from the word “Banco,” which means "bench” in Italian. The word goes back to 12th Century in Northern Italy where the center of international trade and culture were during the period. That's it for today. Thanks for listening. In the next episode, I would like to talk about the connection between money and the kanji for sea shell, “kai”. Stay tuned. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/juliasachiko/message
More than one-third of the U.S. population of women is peri or post-menopause. Driven by a significant change in hormones, many women in this stage of life experience decreased libido, changes in sexual function, difficulty with sleep, and memory decline. A recent study looked at the effects of aromatherapy or a mindfulness intervention, or the combination of the two, and their impact on sexual function. Not surprisingly, aromatherapy was shown to be helpful. Study Design One hundred thirty-two postmenopausal women were divided among four groups: Aromatherapy + Routine Care (standard medical care) Mind-Body Intervention + Aromatherapy Placebo Aromatherapy + Mind-Body Intervention Routine Care + Aromatherapy Placebo The women were 50-60 years old, hadn't used hormone therapy in at least the previous six months, had moderate anxiety with some sexual dysfunction, and were otherwise healthy. The aromatherapy groups inhaled two to three drops of a lavender-bergamot essential oil blend three times per day for eight weeks. The blend was made with essential oils and a 60% ethanol solution. It contained a 0.04% concentration of bergamot and a 5% concentration of lavender, so it was pretty diluted compared to two to three drops of pure essential oils. Even with such a dilution, the essential oil blend led to significant positive outcomes for the women. Study Results At the end of the study, the Mindfulness-Based Intervention and the Aromatherapy groups experienced improvements in sexual function and depression. Interestingly, eight weeks after the study, only the aromatherapy group showed continued improvements. Studies show that aromatherapy stimulates the release of endorphins, which contribute to reductions in pain, stress, and anxiety while increasing relaxation. Hickey M, Bryant C, Judd F. Evaluation and management of depressive and anxiety symptoms in midlife. Climacteric. 2012;15(1):3-9. doi:10.3109/13697137.2011.620188 According to the study's authors: The mechanism of action of these essential oils is two main ways: The first is through the olfactory pathway, which stimulates the receptors located in the olfactory bulb and transmits the olfactory message to the limbic system. This system is the brain's emotional center and is effective on pulse rate, blood pressure, respiratory system, and stress response. The second way is through skin absorption. Molecules of essential oils are absorbed through the skin over 20-40 min. Mojtehedi M, et al. Other studies reinforce the findings in this one. Rose, fennel, geranium, and bitter orange have been shown to improve menopause-related symptoms as well, as has Ginko biloba. Read also: Lavender Essential Oil for Anxiety and Depression My Thoughts The results of this study aren't surprising, as so many other previous studies have found similar effects, not only for women during and post-menopause but also for libido, anxiety, and other mental health effects in both men and women of most age groups. The effects of the Mindfulness-Based Intervention are also interesting, though this isn't a topic I write about. If it's something of interest for you, I recommend finding a practitioner who specializes in it. Regarding aromatherapy, I want to point out some crucial points. First, the study participants used the oils multiple times per day, consistently. Your body metabolizes essential oils relatively quickly. This differs from many drugs designed to release into your system over many hours. You can't expect them to work on symptoms like those related to menopause if you only use them once per day or if you use them inconsistently. Second, this study does not suggest that only lavender and bergamot are effective. Hundreds of essential oils are available, some of which you may find repulsive and others you'll enjoy. Lavender and bergamot are well-studied, in part because they're inexpensive and readily available.
