Nevena, Macca and Ben are joined by Melissa Lowe, Independent, candidate for the seat of Hawthorn, candidate interview. https://www.facebook.com/mel4hawthorn https://twitter.com/mel4hawthorn https://www.instagram.com/mel4hawthorn/ The post Saturday Magazine, 19th November 2022: Candidate interview: Melissa Lowe, Independent appeared first on Saturday Magazine.
— Melissa Lowe had an unprecedented upbringing as her dad was 2nd generation skydiver (a pioneer as well, he was just inducted into the 2021 Skydiving Hall of Fame) and he was an international drug smuggler in the 80's and went to prison when Melissa was just 12 years old (she wrote about it in her books called Sugar Alpha and Charlie Bravo). In hindsight, Melissa realized that she could have been a victim of her circumstances - a traumatic yet exhilarating childhood. Her father passed away in a tragic skydiving accident in 2003. However, Melissa has overcome a lot to having become a well-respected female skydiver in a male-dominated sport. She is a professional skydiver that has just completed her 24th world record in 2021 and she has two more world records scheduled for this upcoming year. Melissa has 11,300 skydives, she is an instructor, a part of the Highlight Pro Skydiving Team, an organizer of the Project 19 Women's Vertical World Record, and recently re-elected as a United States Parachute Association [USPA] National Director. In addition, Melissa is a keynote speaker having spoken on the TEDx stage, an author, personal trainer (as of 2020), and yoga instructor (since 2007). Valeria Teles interviews Melissa Lowe about diversity, inclusion, letting go, being in the moment and rising above the odds. The inspiration is Love. The aspiration is to awaken new ways of thinking that can lead us to a new way of being, being well.
A lifelong journey is the only way to describe Melissa Lowe's participation in the world of skydiving. Having firmly planted her feet on her own reputation built of hard work, good fun and amazing accomplishments, the now "Madam Director" of the USPA takes her time to sit down once again with me to discuss her role in "the Machine", her thoughts on change and improvements to our still growing sport, and her pride in the accomplishments of her father and the long overdue public acknowledgements of his substantial contribution to the Lunatic Fringe.
Sylvia is joined by Melissa Lowe to discuss being a pioneer in the sport of skydiving. She shares openly the way she integrates her entrepreneurship, skydiving, yoga and family with her history, personal struggles, lessons on what has worked and a unique perspective on role models, mentors and confronting angst and fear. They talk about comradery and loss in a tight-knit community, and much more. Melissa holds 23 skydiving world records and is a licensed pilot, yoga instructor, author, and mom. Also a writer, The Sugar Alpha Chronicles are a series of books based on the life of the late skydiving pioneer and Melissa’s father, Roger Nelson's life as a drug smuggler, iconic figure in the sport of skydiving, family man, and eventually a convicted felon. He wrote these books while serving his 5 year prison sentence and smuggled them out of prison where after his death, Melissa was able to finish the project and get them published. A decade’s worth of research and finding out truths of her past as a drug smuggler's daughter this series brought the memoirs into fruition.Topics Include:Growing up in a skydiving community drop zoneBeing a drug smuggler's daughterBreaking away from family moldGetting sober and resetting identityInfluences from learning and practicing yogaStability and instability as a young adultThe experience of flying with your bodyProcessing loss Wingsuit flying, Freestyle, Freefly and competition The Highlight Pro Skydiving - the all-female demonstration jump teamMission and mediaWorld records, attempts and other successesEntrepreneurship and leadershipAnd other topics...Resources Mentioned:https://melissa-lowe.com/about/Melissa's Books:Sugar Alpha: The Life and Times of Señor Huevos Grandes and Charlie Bravo: Descent into Darkness and DangerOriginally written by Roger, the series were not published until years after his death when Melissa picked up the dusty manuscript and turned them into books.
