GB2RS News Sunday the 22nd of February   The news headlines: RSGB 2026 Elections – Nominated Director candidates announced A year in numbers 2025 – a celebration of RSGB achievements Former RSGB President Colin Thomas, G3PSM, is now a Silent Key  In this year's RSGB elections, there are vacancies for two Nominated Directors. Following a rigorous selection process, the Society's Nominations Committee has chosen to put forward Graham Smith, G4NMD, and Patrick Wood, 2E0IFB, for endorsement. RSGB members will be able to vote to endorse these candidates when voting opens on Wednesday, the 18th of March. To help you learn more about the candidates, the RSGB has published two videos. The candidates weren't given the questions in advance and were interviewed separately. You can watch their in-depth answers in a single easy-to-view video, whilst the two-minute video provides their brief thoughts on RSGB membership. You can watch them on the RSGB YouTube channel and on its website at rsgb.org/candidates Amateur radio continues to evolve, and the RSGB, in turn, develops how it supports current radio amateurs and reaches out to new audiences. The RSGB General Manager, Steve Thomas, M1ACB, wrote his annual feature called ‘A year in numbers' for the March issue of RadCom. In it he shared some of the year's great achievements in which RSGB HQ staff have often led the way. Read the full feature and view the infographic on page 48 of the March edition. You can also see the highlights in a brief video on the RSGB YouTube channel at youtube.com/theRSGB It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Colin Thomas, G3PSM. Colin worked tirelessly for the RSGB and was President from 2008 to 2009. He made a great contribution to the acquisition and defence of the radio spectrum. Within Region 1, he played a leading role in the acquisition of additional bands, including 136kHz, 472kHz, allocations at 5MHz and the expansion of 7MHz. He also led the successful defence of existing allocations. IARU Region 1 radio amateurs owe him a huge debt. Colin was an Honorary Life Vice-President and a recipient of the Founder's trophy in recognition of his work both for the Society and for the IARU. A full tribute to Colin is being prepared for the RSGB website and for RadCom. The RSGB is reminding radio amateurs that the frequencies at 5MHz are only available on a secondary basis to holders of a UK Full amateur radio licence. Foundation and Intermediate licence holders are not allowed to operate on 5MHz. You can find details about this in the OFW611 amateur radio licence terms and conditions booklet, which is available from ofcom.org.uk, and there is also more information about operating on this band at rsgb.org/5mhz Are you passionate about attracting older people to amateur radio, while retaining and engaging our valued senior members? The RSGB is seeking an enthusiastic individual to take on the role of Honorary Mature Members' Officer. This volunteer leadership role will champion the inclusive ethos of amateur radio and promote how the hobby can be enjoyed by all, irrespective of age. You will help to ensure that mature members feel supported, valued and actively involved and build a small team to develop initiatives that strengthen engagement across our community. If you are an RSGB Member and are committed to helping others remain active and involved in the hobby they love, visit rsgb.org/volunteers to read the full role description and find out how to apply. Time is running out to submit your entry to the RSGB 2026 Construction Competition. The deadline is Sunday, the 1st of March. You'll need to email a short description of your entry and up to four photographs. It is also recommended to send a link to a video that demonstrates your entry working. More details on submitting your application can be found via rsgb.org/construction-competition. The results of the competition will be announced during the RSGB 2026 Annual General Meeting on Saturday, 18th of April. To encourage activity on the 2m band, the 145 Alive team has introduced 145 Alive 50. The trial period for this initiative runs until the 18th of April. The rules are simple. Call CQ on the calling channel and have at least one QSO per day on the 2m band. Record your contacts and send your log for 50 or more days, in ADIF format, to 145aliveuk@gmail.com. Electronic certificates will be supplied by the 145 Alive team to successful applicants. Please send details of all your news and events to radcom@rsgb.org.uk. The deadline for submissions is 10 am on Thursdays before the Sunday broadcast each week.  And now for details of rallies and events On Sunday, the 1st of March, the Exeter Radio Rally will take place at The Kenn Centre, EX6 7UE. Using SSB on the 80m band, the exchange is signal report, serial number and your Worked All Britain area. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA and G4BAO on Thursday, the 19th of February. We had a week of relatively low solar flux indices and mostly settled geomagnetic conditions. While the solar flux index fell to the 117 to 129 range, the Kp index was mostly in the twos and threes. This was after the weekend's geomagnetic disturbance, due to a large coronal hole that expelled solar plasma in a stream that moved past Earth at nearly 700 kilometres per second. As a result, HF conditions have been quite good with plenty of DX being worked. The KP5/NP3VI Desecheo Island DXpedition near Puerto Rico has been a struggle for many, due to its popularity and use of solar-powered batteries and low power. One quick hint: try FT8 on the 40m band around 7 to 7.30 am. You get a greyline enhancement at sunrise, but for much of Europe, the band is closing, which means there is little competition. Let us know how you get on. Other DX this week includes 8R1WA in Guyana. This is an Italian team operating until Friday, the 27th of February. Chuck will be active as VP2MCV on Montserrat and will be active in the ARRL DX CW Contest until the end of the month. Finally, a German team will be operating as J51A in Guinea-Bissau until mid-March. Another large solar coronal hole became Earth-facing on Friday, the 20th of February, so we may expect unsettled geomagnetic conditions from today, the 22nd. Next week, the Space Weather Prediction Centre forecasted a low solar flux index of 105 for yesterday, the 21st, before rising again to potentially reach 165 by the end of this month. Unsettled geomagnetic conditions are forecast for the 24th and 25th with an estimated Kp index of 5. And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO Friday the 13th and Saturday the 14th of February saw afternoon openings on 50MHz to TZ1CE in Mali to generate DX interest. However, as expected, it was stations much further south that benefited from the best propagation, with just a few stations in the southern areas of the UK making QSOs on FT8. The present spell of unsettled weather remains the main theme for the period up to the end of the coming week. The pattern is controlled by a strong Atlantic jet stream, so ‘changeable' is the watchword with periods of heavy rain alternating with brighter showery interludes and, of course, quite strong winds at times. In terms of propagation, rain scatter is a clear favourite, although in one cloudy period in mild air around Tuesday the 24th, some possible tropo may show up for southern areas of the UK.  The meteor scatter options are again subject to random activity since we are still some way off the next important shower, the Lyrids, in late April.   The auroral prospects have, at best, been gently simmering at low values of the Kp index, mostly less than 5. Stay tuned, though, because we may see an uptick around Tuesday the 24th. So watch for signs of fluttery signals on the LF bands and then check for auroral tones on 10m and up through the 6 to 2m bands. These events are always a bit of a long shot, but should be worth checking this time. The sporadic-E season is still some way off, although a strong jet stream pattern is always a positive. For EME, Moon declination is positive and rising, meaning longer Moon windows and higher peak elevation. Path loss continues to fall as we approach perigee on Tuesday, the 24th. 144MHz sky noise starts the coming week low, rising to moderate towards the end. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

Regular In Touch listeners will know that decisions to make organisational changes by management at The Macular Society have been met with strong opposition. The changes include a reduction in the number of regional managers, a move which some in the charity say will badly damage service provision. Indeed, feelings are running so high that a group called "Save Our Society, Save our Services" or SOS has been formed. Following a recent Annual General Meeting, SOS claimed they had been denied the opportunity to properly challenge management and that controversial decisions had been forced through.Amid this acrimony, we were keen to give people from both sides of the argument the opportunity to explain their position. We're pleased to say that SOS members Tricia Sturgeon and Ron Barnett, and Cecilia Bufton, Chair of the Society's Board of Trustees agreed to join us to do just that.Presenter: Peter White Producers: Beth Hemmings and Fern Lulham Production Coordinator: Helen SurteesWebsite image description: Peter White sits smiling in the centre of the image, wearing a dark green jumper. Welcome to QNEWS and a segment from the Darling Downs Radio Club. It's 7 September where we are, and only four weeks until Daylight Saving starts. First piece of news: we had our Annual General Meeting last Monday, easily made quorum, and everything went smoothly. The motion to replace and update the Rules was passed without dissent, and we have a full committee with three new members joining the team. The rogues gallery is online at the website, and you can check out the new club officers. The meeting also updated our member schedule with two new member classes: family membership for up to two adults and up to two children for $55 and a new junior member category - if you're under 17, it's only $10 to be a member of the club. The membership system is updated and you can join or renew right now. And thanks to everyone who joined or renewed during the special membership drive last month: as you can see, you did get a bargain. Hello, I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I've been thinking. This past week has seen the Sun continue a range of electro-chemical gyrations with results being both seen and received on Earth. Sunspot Cycle 25 is certainly maintaining the interests for all those who follow space weather and for radio amateurs as well. Now that we have officially entered Spring time, I would imagine that many people are preparing for the warmer seasons and checking and prepping gear that has been stored during the Winter. It has been a strange period with the southern highlands of Queensland receiving a rare smattering of snow and parts of the interior plagued by flooding. Now we get to prepare for the annual cyclone season. Life is full of action. I am committed in family matters so my social calendar is something to look forward to in the future. But for many of us, students and parents and others who enjoy their radio, I have a question. How do you record the events that you wish to enjoy so they don't slip by until it is rush to prepare? Being of the old school, so to speak, I use paper records to keep track of appointments and events. The ubiquitous calendar fixed with a big magnet to the fridge door is the main household source of these reminders. For good measure, I use a pocket diary so that details are available when I indulge in sports such as shopping. Not everyone uses a smart phone and sometimes the old methods provide a level of redundancy that a lost piece of electronics might lose. The reason I ask the question is, I believe that a consistent platform to inform our community would be helpful. There are events on the amateur calendar which go from local to international and these need integrating with personal events such as sports, other recreations and medical visits, for instance. Would it be a help if we had a platform to distribute regular detailed updates and what would it be? Email was the go to in previous years but the use of social media platforms seems to have replaced a lot of email correspondence and how many people still regularly log into web sites to check things like this? Our broadcast news carries a certain level of events and the print schedule of the magazine goes against efficient updating. Then once we have made a choice of method, there comes the necessity of having a coordinator who can extract the information and compile the necessary posts to get out to members. Assuming that the mechanics could be sorted there is the reluctance that seems to be inflicted on our communications hobby of getting the information from the sources to the distribution point. Ask our News Editor how easy it is and you will understand my point. For what it is worth, do you think we could benefit by a simple system of notification that would allow the best planning for us all? I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and that's what I think, how about you?

This is Allan VK4HIT with news from Ipswich and District Radio Club. Today (Sunday) Ipswich WICEN volunteers are supporting safety check points during the Lake Manchester Trail held this morning. A calendar of upcoming WICEN-supported events will be available in the coming weeks. Jamboree of the air and internet is coming up on October 18 between 0900 hours and midnight. This week from Darling Downs Radio Club an even quicker QNEWS- so much has been happening in the last week and in the weeks coming. Like we're all bubbling over to tell you, but there's no time. So. Hi. I'm John VK4JPM, secretary of the club. Last Tuesday all Club members of record, past and present, should have received an email with the packet for the Annual General Meeting. That gives you the agenda, minutes from last year, financials, motions on notice, and a copy of the proposed replacement for the Club's Rules. This is really important stuff. Hello, I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I've been thinking. Best wishes to all those taking part in the RD Contest and may the gods of radio propagation be favourable. Last week, I went looking to re-familiarise myself with the “Friendly Contest” and instead of just going to the WIA web site, I did a search to see how far the news had travelled. Wow, was I in for a shock! On the device that I was using all bar 1 link related to 2024 or generic entries. The one positive link that did show was from a well known amateur and retailer of radio gear. Now I admit that it may have been simply the particular search engine and I was not choosing to use AI either, but really for an event on the amateur radio calendar to be so well hidden seems shameful. I shifted my attention to the Wireless Institute and there was indeed a page of information on the levels and awards that could be earned. So to all those who have been associated with the armed forces and the many participants in this memorial activity, I feel we need to apologise that the RD has become overcome with a bout of shyness. Last broadcast, I raised a few thoughts about how we amateurs could show the flag with items that identify us, at least to other radio freaks, hi hi, and I was rewarded with an email from a QNEWS listener who had already commenced this journey by designing a tee shirt with suitable messaging. I suggested to him that he might contact some of the bigger clubs as they had already produced wearable items for their members and some might be able to assist with suggestions as to sources and suppliers as well as printing. So if you are contacted, please be aware you are receiving a genuine enquiry. One thing that I have noted is that the world seems to be getting more and more isolated. I watch a bit of TV news and have been known to enjoy broadcast radio news services too. It was via social media that I learned about the fires that are afflicting Spain and Portugal and the heatwave that is seeing temperatures career into the mid 40 degrees Celsius. It seems that, even with journalists scattered around the world, we consumers of their work are getting less of it that ever before. We have had the removal of many sub-editors from media sources, some years ago. We have seen overseas bureaux shut or reduced to minimal staffing and even although there are very good international news agencies, our speakers and screens don't seem to share their work output to any degree. I mention this because in some ways it seems the club circuit has closed in on individual units and there is less visits and interactions than say a few years ago. So maybe this is an item to pursue amongst our clubs. Let's see if we can get more social activities to strengthen those slowing bonds of friendship. I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and that's what I think, how about you?

Lady Rachel MacRobert was born Rachel Workman in Massachusetts in 1884. She was sent to study in the UK where she developed a passion for geology, and attended the Annual General Meeting of the Royal Geological Society despite women not being allowed. She became Lady Rachel MacRobert through marriage to Alexander MacRobert in 1911. He was thirty years her senior and a successful businessman. When he was knighted Lady MacRobert refused to attend the ceremony saying "I will bow to no man." They had three sons who all died whilst flying, two of whom in active service. In response Lady MacRobert paid for a plane, 'MacRobert's Reply' to be commissioned in their memory. She ran her husband's businesses in India after his death and bred cattle on the family estate in Aberdeenshire. Choosing Lady Rachel MacRobert is the Chief Executive of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Dr Hayaatun Sillem. When Hayaatun discovered that the MacRobert Award for engineering was named after a woman she began looking into her life and discovered an independent visionary who was once described as "charmingly volcanic." But it's her response to the loss of her three sons which Hayaatun admires most, praising its defiance and also how it seized agency from a situation that could have easily made her a victim. Gordon Masterton from Edinburgh University and Trustee of The MacRobert Trust joins the discussion and says after a recent speech to launch an AI version of Lady MacRobert young women came up to him and said "Who would have thought she was such a badass." U.S. Soccer will elect a new Vice President at its Annual General Meeting, which runs February 8-10 in Dallas. On Episode 124, candidate Nathán Goldberg, former assistant general manager at NJ/NY Gotham FC, joins the show to answer questions on several topics facing U.S. Soccer. The governance of the federation is something fans should be well informed about, and through our interview with Goldberg, we learn about why he wants to join the Board of Directors as the Vice President and what he hopes to accomplish in the role. We address topics like youth development, player safety, increased fan accessibility, increased diversity and inclusion, how to increase our coaching and referee pool, as well as how to bring each of the member associations together and working with the professional soccer leagues. Goldberg gives us his thoughts on so many questions to showcase why he believes he is best to help lead the federation alongside President Cindy Parlow Cone and CEO JT Batson. We will be hosting interviews over the next week with Dr. Pete Zopfi, the other candidate for U.S. Soccer Vice President going against Nathán Goldberg, as well as Mike Cullina, who was a candidate until he withdrew from the race recently. We hope to touch on as many topics as we can that are important to fans in an effort to bring you into the governance process. If you have a question for the candidates, submit it on our Google form! We're back with Episode 123 as we catch up on some topics from the past week! The USMNT opened 2024 with a loss to Slovenia last weekend, but it was a chance for fans to see the future as several players on the roster could be at the Olympics this summer. We quickly discuss the players and how January Camp can serve as a potential springboard to the full national team for players. For the USWNT, SheBelieves Cup will take place in April now, and it will be a mini tournament. Brazil, Canada, and Japan will once again join the USWNT as semifinal matches will take place in Atlanta and Columbus will host the final and 3rd place matches. In another loaded year for the USWNT, SheBelieves Cup once again brings some quality competition. After the break, Sam Mewis announced her retirement last week as her knee injury proved to be too much to return to the field. We pay tribute to one of the most dynamic and dominant midfielders America has ever produced. We'll really miss her on the field. Finally, U.S. Soccer will hold an election to fill the Vice President role at their Annual General Meeting in early February. We will be having interviews with each of the candidates for U.S. Soccer Vice President: Nathán Goldberg and Dr. Pete Zopfi. Mike Cullina, who was a candidate before he withdrew from the race last week, has also agreed to come on the show to answer questions and speak directly to fan issues and topics important to us. Tomorrow is the Annual General Meeting of the National Trust - and battle lines are being drawn. Over the past two years, a protest faction called 'Restore Trust' has emerged to challenge the UK's biggest charity. They accuse the organisation of playing politics by highlighting links to colonialism and slavery. But The National Trust says that the history of Empire needs to be part of what we preserve and document. So, can the most quintessentially British institution weather the storm of the culture wars? This podcast was brought to you thanks to the support of readers of The Times and The Sunday Times.
