When Women Fly is a weekly interview podcast where we speak with women who fly, literally and metaphorically. These are creative women who elevate the assumptions of traditions and who are fueled by physical and mental challenges. They fly, run, surf, ski, climb or otherwise soar, with a passion for life that is infectious. Join these conversations about aspirations, pivots, vulnerability, reinvention, resilience and what it takes to rise above setbacks, injury, loss and defeat. Your host, Sylvia Winter, a pilot, designer, mom and podcaster, brings her enthusiasm for adventure, fresh air and vistas, to you, wherever you are. We celebrate the spirit, courage and strength that connects us. We believe that bringing the space to dream into people's lives by our telling real stories of women who capture and harness the unimaginable, clears the sky and is an affirmation to us all. Be bold. Be brave. Fly.

Amelia Rose's parents wanted her to have an aspirational name — one that she could live up to. So, with her dad's surname, she was given the name Amelia Rose Earhart. Growing up, her name often prompted questions. Is she related to the Amelia Earhart? Will she become a pilot? Finally, after a genealogy test and a newfound inspiration for flight, Amelia Rose thought she was able to answer YES to both of these questions. Years later, however, the news broke. In a “gotcha” moment of journalism, Amelia's coworker at a news station uncovered that she had no relation to the American Hero, Amelia Earhart. The news couldn't have come at a worse time. Amelia Rose was preparing for an around-the-world flight and was now being called a fraud, a liar, and a fake. The embarrassment of it all had her questioning if she should proceed or quit on the dream she had worked so hard for. In this conversation between two female pilots, Sylvia and Amelia discuss what it means to embody a role model, setting boundaries, Amelia's around-the-world flight, how to overcome challenges in personal and professional settings, and so much more.Topics Include: - Amelia's experience with news and anchoring - Women in aviation- How to develop a skill stack- Focusing on what you can control- Giving back in aviation - The Fly with Amelia Foundation- Struggling with fear and doubt- The power of partnership in pursuit of your goals- Imposter Syndrome- Overcoming the fear of rejection- And other topics…Amelia Rose Earhart is the youngest woman to fly around the world in a single-engine aircraft. Amelia has been a passionate aviatrix since her first flight lesson at the age of twenty-one, a seeker of all things adventurous and is an accomplished public speaker, spending the last 8 years working as a television news anchor, covering breaking news, traffic and weather in Denver and Los Angeles. Amelia was given the Amelia Earhart Pioneering Achievement Award in 2013 and in 2014 was named by the Jaycees as one of the “Top Ten Young Americans”. As part of our Season III relaunch this week, we are revisiting a few of our favorite episodes that grapple with big life themes, break down the components of change, and dive into strategies that are relevant and applicable to you today. This is the story of an athletic prodigy. It's also the story of how setbacks become catalysts for change, how determination fuels a dream, and how a drive for adventure can evolve. And it is a story of risk-taking, mountain life,  and personal reflection that characterize what it takes to ski and fly in the backcountry. For pro-skier Caite Zeliff, the derailing of her career as a ski racer was an opportunity to reconnect with herself and become the athlete she was always meant to be.  At 12, Caite Zeliff started a ski racing career that brought her all over the world. She ascended, she earned a scholarship to a boarding school, she won titles, she received an invitation to the US Ski Team – and she also was rejected, blew out her knee, and burned out – all by age 20. When the U.S. Ski Team invitation didn't come, and she blew out her knee while racing for the University of New Hampshire, she left college and headed westward in search of big mountains and powder. It was in Jackson Hole, WY, where Caite found her true calling – freeskiing. This risk-taking mentality has built her a career as a professional freeskier. 057 On Taking Risks and Personal Transformation with Backcountry Badass Caite Zeliff - Pro Skier, Paraglider, and Twice Queen

At 12, Caite Zeliff has started a ski racing career that brought her all over the world. It was in Jackson Hole, WY, where Caite found her true calling – freeskiing.Paragliding. Thanks to COVID and an idea inspired by a soaring raven, Caite decided to learn to paraglide. She continually pushes herself to the edge of her comfort zone. Paragliding is a wild sport, one that challenges Caite in all kinds of ways. It requires slowing down and a constant awareness of the situation. Caite is constantly looking for challenge and currently obsessed with understanding how to strengthen the relationship with the wing, moving air and gravity. This risk-taking mentality has built her a career as a professional freeskier. Beyond winning Jackson Hole's Kings and Queens of Corbet's twice, Caite has starred in films like Warren Miller's Timeless (2019) and Teton Gravity Research's Make Believe (2020), and Stoke the Fire (2021).  Topics Include:Caite's journey from ski racer to professional freeskierViewing “failure” as an opportunityWrestling with an inner obsession for achievementShifting focus from the outcome to the processProcessing childhoodTaking risks and stepping out of comfort zonesFinding your voice as a female in a male-dominated industryThe transformational power of women supporting womenLearning to fly and a shifted mindsetAnd other topics...Caite Zeliff grew up skiing in North Conway, New Hampshire.
