Welcome to Crawlspace. In this new episode, Tim Pilleri & Lance Reenstierna are joined again by the great Dr. Michael Arntfield, a criminologist, author, consultant and award-winning professor at Western University in Canada as well as a Fulbright Scholar and previous visiting chairman at Vanderbilt University in Nashville where he specialized in victimology and American literature. Arntfield spent more than 15 years as a police officer and detective in London, Ontario.  Mike brings his unique and specialized insight into not only the dynamics of how the discovery of multiple bodies in a centralized location can be determined, or excluded, as the work of a serial killer, but also into the psyche of the people and organizations who in fact promote that narrative, creating their own reality. We've all heard about the Long Island Serial Killer, but there are so many more true crime stories there. Did you know that Long Island is the home of roughly 40% of the entire population of New York State? With that many people living there, it's no wonder that it has a lot more unsolved murders and missing persons cases than we know. We're going to talk about one unsolved murder and one missing persons case from Long Island today and hopefully someone who hears this has some information and will come forward to share it with authorities. The more we talk about unsolved cases like the two we've investigated today, the more it gets kind of frustrating to realize just how many people have gotten away with evil acts like murder. It makes you want to question God. In His wisdom, God addressed this in his Word: Job 21:7-16 Why do the wicked live on, growing old and increasing in power? They see their children established around them, their offspring before their eyes. Their homes are safe and free from fear; the rod of God is not on them. Their bulls never fail to breed; their cows calve and do not miscarry. They send forth their children as a flock; their little ones dance about. They sing to the music of timbrel and lyre; they make merry to the sound of the pipe. They spend their years in prosperity and go down to the grave in peace. Yet they say to God, ‘Leave us alone! We have no desire to know your ways. Who is the Almighty, that we should serve him? What would we gain by praying to him?' But their prosperity is not in their own hands, so I stand aloof from the plans of the wicked. Former police officer Michael Arntfield wants us all to get in touch with our inner crime-fighter. He says that an estimated 95% of all crimes that are solved have some sort of citizen involvement. With over a quarter million unsolved murders in North America, it sure seems like we need to get involved if we want those numbers to get any better. I've put a link in the show notes to the Murder Accountability Project. You can use it to see how many unsolved cases are right there in your area, just waiting for someone to help. MONSTER CITY: Murder, Music & Mayhem in Nashville’s Dark Age Bestselling true-crime author Michael Arntfield To most, Nashville, Tennessee is music’s most beloved city: the home for country’s biggest stars, concerts on every corner, and blissfully strolling down Lower Broadway in a colorful wake of flashing neon signs. But Music City - a haven for aspiring musicians and magnet for country lovers - has a dark side!! A deep history of serial killings! Now in the new book - MONSTER CITY: Murder, Music, and Mayhem in Nashville’s Dark Age - bestselling true crime author MICHAEL ARNTFIELD – describes the never-before-told true account of the serial killers who terrorized Nashville’s music scene for decades—and the cold-case Murder Squad determined to bring an end to their sadistic sprees. You might recognize Michael Arntfield - he is also the host and producer of a true-crime series airing on both the Oxygen Network and the Oprah Winfrey Network. MONSTER CITY: Murder, Music, and Mayhem in Nashville’s Dark Age (Little A; 9/04/18) is darkly nostalgic and hardboiled, exposing a city’s cultural history and a landmark work in popular criminology. It is a suspenseful and disturbing part-true crime, part-human interest story that will lead the reader through the “Fast Food Murders” and “Vandyland Murders,” permanently altering their view of Nashville. Enter Pat Postiglione: a displaced New Yorker and Vietnam vet who suddenly finds himself a home in the heart of Dixie just as Nashville is riding the wave of "New Country" and when serial killers are arriving in instantaneous succession – a deadly orchestra slicing its way to center stage at the Grand Old Opry. As Pat soon becomes one of Nashville’s best cold-case detectives, he secretly forms an elite team to end Nashville’s serial-killing spree, better known as the Murder Squad. With his savvy crew and unwavering dedication to solving each bloody and horrific crime, Pat eventually goes on to solve more cold cases and arrest more serial killers than any cop currently living. From Vanderbilt University to dive bars and out-of-the-way motels, Postiglione followed the bloody tracks of these ever-escalating crimes—each enacted by a different psychopath with the same intent: to murder without motive or remorse. But of all the investigations, of all the monsters Postiglione chased, few were as chilling, or as game changing, as the Rest Stop Killer: a homicidal trucker who turned the interstates into hi

Today we interview Canadian criminologist Michael Arntfield, author of the book Murder City, The Untold Story of Canada's Serial Killer Capital, 1959-1984. Arntfield was a police officer and detective in London, Ontario from 1999 to 2014 when he left policing to accept a customized academic appointment at University of Western Ontario where he teaches what he calls "literary criminology" in a combined English literature, professional writing, and crime studies program. The best-selling and controversial Murder City for which Arntfield is arguably best known, advances a hypothesis, often employing an epistolary format through the use of a now deceased detective Dennis Alsop’s original diary notes, that over a specific interval in the 1960s and 1970s, the city of London, Ontario spawned or otherwise housed more serial killers per capita than any city in Canada, and possibly beyond.
