Thomas Hargrove, Founder and Chairman of the Murder Accountability Project, Discusses Unsolved Homicides Thomas Hargrove, founder and chairman of the Murder Accountability Project, joins me today to discuss unsolved homicides in the United States. We've all heard about the Long Island Serial Killer, but there are so many more true crime stories there. Did you know that Long Island is the home of roughly 40% of the entire population of New York State? With that many people living there, it's no wonder that it has a lot more unsolved murders and missing persons cases than we know. We're going to talk about one unsolved murder and one missing persons case from Long Island today and hopefully someone who hears this has some information and will come forward to share it with authorities. The more we talk about unsolved cases like the two we've investigated today, the more it gets kind of frustrating to realize just how many people have gotten away with evil acts like murder. It makes you want to question God. In His wisdom, God addressed this in his Word: Job 21:7-16 Why do the wicked live on, growing old and increasing in power? They see their children established around them, their offspring before their eyes. Their homes are safe and free from fear; the rod of God is not on them. Their bulls never fail to breed; their cows calve and do not miscarry. They send forth their children as a flock; their little ones dance about. They sing to the music of timbrel and lyre; they make merry to the sound of the pipe. They spend their years in prosperity and go down to the grave in peace. Yet they say to God, ‘Leave us alone! We have no desire to know your ways. Who is the Almighty, that we should serve him? What would we gain by praying to him?' But their prosperity is not in their own hands, so I stand aloof from the plans of the wicked. Former police officer Michael Arntfield wants us all to get in touch with our inner crime-fighter. He says that an estimated 95% of all crimes that are solved have some sort of citizen involvement. With over a quarter million unsolved murders in North America, it sure seems like we need to get involved if we want those numbers to get any better. Americans are slightly obsessed with stories about serial killers. There are at least a dozen published books about Ted Bundy and the same for Charles Manson, not to mention everything written about John Wayne Gacy, Wayne Williams, Gary Ridgway, and others. But as retired cold-case investigator Paul Holes told Rolling Stone magazine, cultural changes like fewer women hitchhiking made it harder for these and other roving killers to find victims. But there was still one vulnerable group of women who was willing get in a car with a stranger - sex workers. The man known as the Green River Killer, Gary Ridgway, even admitted that he chose prostitutes as his victims because he thought he was much less likely to get caught. For a time, he was right. Since 1980, more than a quarter of a million unsolved homicides have occurred in the United States - which is more than all U.S. military deaths since the end of WWII.  And here's the maddening truth about those unsolved cases - there is no centralized agency in the United States dedicated to keeping track of cold or inadequately investigated murders.  Unbelievably, the statistics we read about murders in America are only estimates.  Projections.  This is because local police and sheriff's departments only provide data that they want to provide - there is no federal standard for such reporting, and no single place to hold the data even if such a standard existed.  Enter Thomas Hargrove, the retired reporter-turned-justice warrior,who in 2015 founded the Murder Accountability Project ("MAP"), a nonprofit organization dedicated to tracking and accounting for unsolved U.S. homicides. Gathering data provided by multiple federal, state and local governments, MAP publishes it all, enabling anyone - even YOU - to investigate patterns in unsolved murders, figure out how often your local law enforcement agencies clear homicides - and look at individual cases reported to the FBI or obtained by MAP through Freedom of Information Acts.  Listen in as Melissa tells Hargrove's story, describes the frustration he has experienced when law enforcement pays no attention to his research - including one serial killer he identified after seven women were killed in Indiana - and police didn't pay attention until the murderer was caught after taking seven additional victims.  But mostly, take note of how YOU can use the data MAP collects to do your own research and perhaps find patterns in your own community that could lead law enforcement to seek out the bad guys.

The intention of this episode is to explain how the crime data in the USA is collected and reported to the FBI through the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) and the Supplemental Homicide Reports (SHR). Our guest speaker Thomas Hargrove, CEO of the Murder Accountability Project (MAP) located at www.murderdata.org, will discuss the importance of these data and how we should interpret them.  He will also talk about his project of tracking unsolved homicides in the USA while directly relating to the research he has done for police agencies around the country. One such study called “Are Murders Worth Solving? Experts Believe a Serial Killer Is Behind 51 Unsolved Strangulation Cases in Chicago This. Is. Horrifying. by HANNAH SMOTHERS  JUN 7, 2019 KATIE BUCKLEITNER A fresh look into dozens of unsolved strangulation homicides in Chicago suggests that the murders could be the work of a serial killer who’s been targeting women in the city since at least 2001. Crime experts with the Murder Accountability Project, a D.C.-based nonprofit group that tracks unsolved homicides in the United States, used a web algorithm to map 51 unsolved strangulation cases that took place on the west and south sides of Chicago between 2001 and 2018. The 51 murders have striking similarities: all the victims were women, most were discovered outside in a public place, 76 percent were black, and 75 percent of the crimes had a “clear sexual component,” according to an analysis by Thomas Hargrove, head of the Murder Accountability Project. Hargrove performed his in-depth analysis of Chicago’s strangulation cases at the request of WBBN, a CBS affiliate in Chicago, back in February 2019 because his group “has a knack for finding patterns in unsolved murder cases.” He analyzed information about thousands of homicide victims and the way they died, ultimately identifying 51 cases with strong similarities that are now the focus of this investigation. Hargrove told WBBN that the algorithm he used to map these 51 cases is “essentially a serial-killer detector,” which has been used to help solve serial murders in other cities before. Kildare judge jails Sex Workers for nine months GARDAI RAIDED BROTHEL IN NEWBRIDGE The case was heard at Naas District Court yesterday Two women who were operating a brothel in Newbridge, have been jailed for nine months at Naas District Court yesterday. The pair, Adrina Podaru, 25, and Ana Tomascu, 20, were living in 6 Canning Place, Newbridge when it was raided on November 18, 2018 last following complaints by locals. The pair were charged with keeping or running a brothel, and evidence was given to the court by the gardai that the pair were also the prostitutes. Gardai entered the premises using a search warrant having had the premises under surveillance for some time. At the scene, the women admitted that they were working as prostitutes, offering sexual services for money, and signed statements to that effect. The court heard that there were no clients at the brothel at the time that gardai raided it. No significant money was found at the scene either. “Was business that bad?” Judge Desmond Zaidan asked. “It was early in the night,” Sgt Jacob told the court. Gardai say the women have not come to any attention since then. One of the pair, Ms Podaru is currently expecting a child with her partner.  Their solicitor told the court that the women hope to return to their native Romania once the trial is concluded and to avoid bringing any embarrassment to their families. And gardai were satisfied that this was the case. Their solicitor said that the women had a sum of money available that could be paid to a charity. But Judge Desmond Zaidan was not inclined to give them this opportunity. “They weren’t forced into this position. He sentenced the pair to nine months in prison. Ms Podaru has lodged an appeal and has been released on bail.

Retired investigative journalist Thomas Hargrove is the founder of the Murder Accountability Project.  The data he’s collected has led the Chicago Police Department and the FBI to look into the possibility that a serial killer has been murdering women on the South and West Sides over a 20 year period. We trust law enforcement to do the absolute best job keeping communities safe, conducting investigations, and bringing criminals to justice. But, what about when they don’t live up to their duty? As we saw with the Shelley Desrochers case, there appeared to be a lot more to the story than police were able or willing to discover.These occurrences are more common than one might think, and have been for a long time. In this episode, we look at the case of Christine Rothschild, a University of Wisconsin student who was killed in the late 1960s. After police seemed to be no help, Christine’s friend Linda made it her mission to find the killer. While she was able to put together a strong case against one man, police mainly dismissed it and he was never brought to justice. This story is featured in Dr. Mike Arntfield’s new book “Mad City” where he actually speaks with Linda, and his students even contact the alleged killer. Mike also tells us about the Murder Accountability Project which helps track murder data and hold police departments in the U.S. accountable for their performance.
