In this episode of the “NASM CPT Podcast,” host Rick Richey takes a deep dive into the critical role of sleep in overall health, wellness, and fitness performance. Inspired by his recent study of the Certified Wellness Coach certification and a lively text exchange with his family, Rick uncovers why sleep might be the most underrated element in reaching fitness goals. He debunks the myth that functioning on little sleep is a badge of honor and shares National Sleep Foundation guidelines for optimal sleep across age groups. Rick explores how sleep impacts vital processes such as brain cleaning through the glymphatic system, memory consolidation (both declarative and procedural), weight management, and muscle growth. Backed by research, he details how lack of sleep can lead to weight gain by disrupting hormones like leptin and ghrelin, increase hunger, reduce insulin sensitivity, and even hinder muscle recovery due to lower testosterone, growth hormone, and IGF-1 levels. Listeners will also get practical sleep hygiene strategies—from limiting caffeine and minimizing nighttime light exposure to implementing effective bedtime routines. Rick even explores the power of napping and when it can boost memory or aid in recovery after a rough night's sleep. Our lives look and feel so different after bariatric surgery. One area of our life that can change, or we want to see change in, is our sexuality. We might have felt unworthy of these experiences or relationships before surgery because of our size or shape. Maybe we were disconnected from this area of life because the disease of obesity made it seem impossible to connect with. Or perhaps we felt that our size was holding us back from exploring our sexuality in ways that felt authentic to us. We each experience our sexuality in different ways, and our needs, wants, and desires change throughout our lives, just like everything else. We sat down with Rodolfo Alvarez, a Certified Wellness Coach who holds a Master in Sexuality, for a conversation on what sexuality is, how it can change our life, the impacts weight loss can have on our desires, and strategies for exploring our sexuality after bariatric surgery. This conversation was grounded in a desire to understand what sexuality means, what it can look like in our life, and how it is, on many levels, a small part of sex. Rodolfo shared with us personal stories of how he discovered his sexuality and the tools he uses to ensure that his needs as an individual and a partner are met. He offered some fantastic questions we can ask ourselves as we open ourselves to exploring what our current needs, wants, and desires are and how we can safely start exploring them on a personal level. We are so thankful to have such a fantastic expert in BariNation who can help us grow and expand in this critical area of our lives. Get to know Rodolfo more in the BariNation Membership Community by taking one of his upcoming classes! We hope you leave this conversation feeling excited to turn inward and expand your awareness of your sexuality! If you are a member of BariNation or a Patreon Supporter, be sure you check out the bonus episode of this podcast, where April, Natalie, and Rodolfo share some personal “aha” moments they have recently had about their sexuality and how some “simple” conversations with themselves and partners led to positive changes in their relationships. About our Guest: Rodolfo Alvarez is a multi-faceted Wellness Coach who utilizes his engineer background to help individuals break through roadblocks along their wellness journey. Rodolfo holds master's degrees in Sexology and works with organizations, coprotations, small groups, and individuals to identify areas of growth, coaching them to new personal understandings. Follow Rodolfo on Instagram @rodolfoalvarezx. About Your Hosts: April, Jason, and Natalie are all bariatric patients who were inspired to create the community and support they needed. BariNation empowers people to treat their disease of obesity in kind, compassionate, and caring ways through the community they founded. As they learn to live the pillars of bariatric success (movement, mindset, metabolic wellness), they share their experiences and “aha” moments with their friends and followers. The Freedom and Balance Of The Leanness Lifestyle: With us today is Certified Wellness Coach, fitness expert, and author David Greenwalt. A husband, father, former police officer, gym owner, competitive state-level body builder, and powerlifter, in 1997, at age 32 and a body weight of 235 pounds, David discovered an evidence-based approach for getting off his own 50 excess pounds and keeping it off for 25 years and counting. Since 1999, through his company Leanness Lifestyle University, David has been helping student members, from every walk of life, get the truth, and strategies, to lose excess fat one more time for the last time.Quote: “It's not willpower, it's why power that gets you to your goal." Today's Top 3 Takeaways: Respectful FearConfidence Matched with HumilityCocky = Very Bad Today's Guest & Resource Links: https://lluniversity.com/www.facebook.com/LLUniversitywww.youtube.com/channel/UCTZBYlai7aLc42LGj5JQjEAwww.linkedin.com/in/david-greenwalt-3bab608/www.instagram.com/llu180/ Watch us on YouTube: https://youtu.be/o6RLyWwDE6U Timestamped Show Notes: 05:00 – I finally ended up taking a leave of absence and then ended up leaving, I was an Illinois State Trooper and I ended up leaving because of fitness businesses that I had not the one I have now a different fitness business, I started, but it really took off. But, you know, throughout that I also even when I was a police officer, I was super interested in fitness. I was bodybuilding and powerlifting even when I was a police officer, as a police officer, I got as heavy as like 235 pounds as a power lifter, and I'd get down to 175 pounds for a bodybuilding competition.13:15 – I think that if we're coming in a couple different ways. From a department perspective, you know, obviously, like you said, unscripted, my thoughts go to leadership. Leadership is incredibly important in companies, in police departments, in anything. 22:25 - Even though fitness has been in my kind of personal DNA, when I was a state trooper, I started a little supplement company. I thought, if I can just make enough money to pay for my own protein powder, I'll be happy. So you know, we call it a side hustle now, but here was the thing, there was there was no internet then. So I placed little classified ads in the back of bodybuilding magazines like Flex Magazine, Ironman, and it was a toll free number and I couldn't even answer the phone because I was a police officer working. So when I got the call they would have to leave a message.33:00 – Why are we letting ourselves, and we're capable of so much, go down that emotionally depressed path? How do we catch them sooner? How do we get them in-line sooner to help themselves? - It's a great question. I think that part of the reason, I'll give this quote, "For every complex problem, there's an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong." Since it is a complex question, I'll try not to just turn it into one thing, you know, do it reductionist. I'll say this, I think that part of the answer is, if you have worked with people at all in the addiction space, it's not always rational, because in my head when I was 32, I was rational but like what is going on here?40:00 – There's so much to focus on, and it's more than just take

David shares his program's pillars: nutrition, exercise, and emotional fitness. He deep dives into what Emotional Fitness is and why it is necessary for a permanent lifestyle change. Tune in today to learn how to set your WHYpower to achieve your wellness goals.IN THIS EPISODE:● [4:30] How did David get started in health and fitness?● [10:13] Why are quick answers around health and fitness doing people a disservice? ● [14:56] David explains the nutrition pillar of long-term health and weight management. ● [19:02] David discusses the exercise pillar of long-term health and weight management.● [22:43] What is Emotional Fitness?● [33:02] How does someone start building the muscle of Emotional Fitness?● [43:40] What impact does compassion have on Emotional Fitness?● [48:34] What is WHYpower, and why is it better than willpower?KEY TAKEAWAYS:● 60%-90% of what we eat in the United States is ultra-processed. Focus on just 1% daily, make a simple swap in your diet, and then keep building from there. You don't have to do a complete 180 with your eating; taking baby steps and reducing the ultra-processed food in your diet will lead you to better health.● Focus on what you want, not what you fear or don't want. Practice gratitude exercises to focus on the positivity in your life. Accept what we cannot change, have the courage to change what we can, and always seek wisdom to know the difference. ● Emotional fitness is what keeps the food and exercise pillars going. It is also about feeling authentically good more often, increasing emotional resilience, making better decisions in moments of stress, and having improved self-awareness.● Why Power: Doing what needs to be done, when it needs to be done, whether you feel like it or not. If you have a strong enough WHY you will show up for yourself. Understand your goals and understand why it is so personally important to you, then you will stick with it.QUOTES: “My real food adaptation is this: it is whole, minimally processed, edible parts of plant and animal where/if anything has been added to it, it is whole or minimally processed ingredients commonly found in kitchens.” - David Greenwalt“Anything that's pure cardio, you're not going to keep the muscle. The only way you are going to keep the muscle, which is so precious for all the reasons I mentioned and more, is strength training; it's the only way. You are for sure going to lose muscle as you age if you don't do strength training.” - David Greenwalt “Emotional fitness is about helping us feel authentically good more often, increasing emotional resilience, making better decisions in the moment of stress, and having improved self-awareness and regulation.” - David GreenwaltRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramGUEST RESOURCES: Leanness Lifestyle UniversityDavid Greenwalt InstagramDavid Greenwalt FacebookLeanness Lifestyle University YouTube ChannelDavid Greenwalt LinkedInGUEST BIO:Leanness Lifestyle University was founded in 1999 by David Greenwalt. Today on the podcast, we are talking about a special kind of care in the foster care community called kinship care. Kinship care is when children are cared for by grandparents, extended family members, or unrelated adults with whom they have a close family-like relationship. Caregivers providing kinship care often face unique challenges and abrupt changes to their life plans. In addition to dealing with the circumstances leading to the need for kinship care, their lives are overhauled with the unexpected introduction of the child now in their care. Sharing her experience with us is Rachel Mahnke, a Certified Wellness Coach, Trauma Informed Parent, Life Coach, Therapeutic Art Facilitator, author, and adoptive parent of her biological grandchildren. When life took an unexpected turn, Rachel went from a soon-to-be empty nester to providing kinship care to her two little grandchildren. This episode holds so much wisdom and honesty, and I am eager to share it with you! I was your typical Type-A professional, spending more than three decades in the corporate world. I began my career on Wall Street and concluded it at a Fortune 250 company as its Chief Audit Executive and Chief Risk Officer. I left at the height of my career to launch Athena Wellness, fueled by my enthusiasm for wellness, nutrition and exercise. But I soon found that I enjoyed bridging the worlds of business and wellness. As I traveled my own post-corporate path I had unique insights into how to support other professionals as they navigate their own midlife transitions and make the shift to what I refer to as wholehearted living. As a certified wellness coach, I take a holistic approach to optimal well-being that addresses mind, body and spirit. I enjoy making these topics relatable and meaningful for Type-A executives and entrepreneurs, especially those who have maxed out or become burnt out and disconnected. I love holding the space clients need to listen to their inner wisdom, to drop deep into exploring their own value, impact and influence – and move forward into a life that is a full expression of themselves. In addition to one-on-one coaching and corporate consulting, I teach and facilitate online courses focused on personal transformation based on my wellness methodology. My latest offering is From Type A to Type Be, How to Mindfully Descend the Corporate Ladder and Invite What's Next. https://athenawellness.com Your donation helps us continue to spread creativity throughout the land. It's estimated that 20% of industrialized populations are trying to lose weight on any given day. There are thousands of diet plans and programs. Yet, in the U.S., the prevalence of obesity is up from 15 percent in 1970 to 43 percent today. Why? Is it because, over the past 50 years, people have forgotten to “eat less and exercise more?” A progressive willpower deficiency? Memory impairment - forgot about “moderation in all things?” Basic math became too complex? No clue how to count calories or portions?Over this period, have our genes changed to any great extent? Then what? What explains the alarming rise in obesity worldwide and how do we help those suffering from decades of ineffective messaging and outright lies? This is and has been, the evolving mission of LLU. Through evidence- and experiential-based methods, David helps his student members get the truth, understanding, and strategies to achieve weight-management success once and for all.........If you enjoyed this interview you may also like my Just Get Started Podcast Interview with Robb Wolf, 2x Best-Selling Author and Co-Founder of DrinkLMNT........ Episode 212 of my Curate Your Health Podcast is out! Link below. David Greenwalt is here today to discuss how he helps people learn the truth about mental fitness, nutrition and movement. Obesity is at its highest level ever, with about 40 percent of U.S. adults considered obese. The cause of obesity, he believes, can be broken down into four drivers. One: biological drives, we are driven to calorie dense foods to avoid food scarcity that evolution has built in us. Two: habit condition automatic responses, we use food to change our mental state so that we feel relief, checked out and relaxed. Three: addiction to ultra-processed food. And the fourth driver is our obese genetic environment. These are all external forces that promote obesity: fast food restaurants, proximity, convenience marts, access, opportunity for less activities, parental modeling, marketing, and government subsidies. By becoming more aware of these factors, we can learn to implement strategies to have a different response. Sometimes we need someone else to help us become aware of our subconscious behaviors. If we are aware and are able to catch the behavior as soon as it happens, we can begin to lay down a new healthier path. When you have the support and education, real strategies can win against the external factors and be able to put behaviors in place to lose the weight for the last time. With us today is Certified Wellness Coach, fitness expert, and author David Greenwalt. A husband, father, former police officer, gym owner, competitive state-level bodybuilder, and powerlifter. In 1997, at age 32 and a body weight of 235 pounds, David discovered an evidence-based approach for getting off his own 50 excess pounds and keeping it off for 25 years and counting. Since 1999, through his company Leanness Lifestyle University, David has been helping student members, from every walk of life, get the truth, and strategies, to lose excess fat one more time for the last time.
