My special guest tonight is author Dennis McDougal who stops by to discuss serial killer Randy Kraft and how targeted gay men.   Randy Kraft was highly intelligent, politically active, loyal to his friends, committed to his work--and the killer of 67 people--more than any other serial killer known.    Randy Steven Kraft (born March 19, 1945) is an American serial killer and rapist known as the Scorecard Killer, the Southern California Strangler, and the Freeway Killer,[4] who committed the rape, torture, and murder of a minimum of sixteen young men between 1972 and 1983, the majority of whom he killed in California. Kraft is also believed to have committed the rape and murder of up to fifty-one other young men and boys. He was convicted in May 1989[5] and is currently incarcerated on death row at San Quentin State Prison in Marin County, California.[6] Kraft became known as the "Scorecard Killer" because upon his arrest, investigators discovered a coded list with 61 entries on a scorecard containing cryptic references to his victims;[7] he is also sometimes referred to as the "Freeway Killer" because many of his victims' bodies were discovered beside or near freeways.[8] Kraft shares the latter epithet with two separate and unrelated serial killers, William Bonin and Patrick Kearney.   Between 1971 and 1983, Kraft is believed to have killed 67 victims. All of his suspected victims were males between the ages of 13 and 35,[13][35] the majority of whom were in their late teens to mid-twenties. Kraft was charged with—and convicted of—sixteen of these homicides, all of which had occurred between 1972 and 1983. Many of his victims were members of the United States Marines Corps,[36] and most of their bodies were found to have high levels of both alcohol and tranquilizers, indicating they had been unconscious when they were abused and killed.[37] Kraft's victims were typically lured into his vehicle with an offer of a lift or alcohol. Once in Kraft's vehicle, the victims would be plied with alcohol and/or other drugs. They were then bound, tortured, and sexually abused before they were killed, usually by either strangulation, asphyxiation, or bludgeoning. However, some victims had also ingested lethal doses of pharmaceuticals. At least one victim was stabbed to death.[38] The victims would then be discarded, usually—though not exclusively—alongside or close to various freeways in southern California. Photographic evidence found at Kraft's home indicates several of his victims were driven to his house before their murder.[39] Many of the victims were burned with a car cigarette lighter, usually around the genitals, chest, and face, and several were found with extensive blunt force trauma to the face and head.[40] In several instances, foreign objects were found inserted into the victims' rectums, while other victims had suffered emasculation, or mutilation and dismemberment.[41] The majority of Kraft's murders were committed in California, although some victims had been killed in Oregon, with two further known victims murdered in Michigan in December 1982.Follow Our Other ShowsFollow UFO WitnessesFollow Crime Watch WeeklyFollow Paranormal FearsFollow Seven: Disturbing Chronicle StoriesJoin our Patreon for ad-free listening and more bonus content.Follow us on Instagram @mysteriousradioFollow us on TikTok mysteriousradioTikTok Follow us on Twitter @mysteriousradio Follow us on Pinterest pinterest.com/mysteriousradio Like us on Facebook Facebook.com/mysteriousradio

This comprehensive discussion explores the intricate distinctions between leadership, leadership development, and leader development, emphasizing their intertwined nature and the importance of understanding the context in which they exist. The conversation delves into the dynamic roles of leaders and followers, underscoring the value of meeting individuals where they are in their professional journey, with respect to their unique backgrounds and experiences. Emphasizing continuous, incremental growth, it highlights the significance of self-awareness, reflection, and the necessity of adapting leadership strategies to suit diverse environments, from educational settings to global contexts. The dialogue further addresses the challenges of maintaining authenticity while navigating the expectations of different organizational cultures, and the potential obstacles faced by individuals from underrepresented groups in leadership positions. Central to the discussion is the potent role of self-reflection, facilitated by practices such as journaling, in personal and professional development, providing insights into identifying growth opportunities, leveraging personal strengths, and making impactful decisions in leadership roles.Leadership Development, leaders, followersMeeting people where they are at. See where the gaps are.Leverage the people around you. Who you are five years ago is not who you are today.VUCA: volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity.Knowing who you are. What level of assimilation are you comfortable with? The role is correct but the context isn't. How to reflect: 1. The Career of Staff Sergeant Reckless with the United States Marines Corps began in 1952. This soldiers' heritage went back to an unlikely origin – Mongolia. A bit smaller than most but smart, tough, and fast. Sgt Reckless was proven in battle during the Korean War. Reckless was assigned to a Recoilless Rifle Platoon, Anti-Tank Company, in the fifth Marine Regiment, and took on responsibilities in what we now call “logistics”. The Sgt moved supplies and ammunition to the front and evacuated casualties. In March 1953, Sgt Reckless preformed outstandingly well during the battle for outpost Vegas and was promoted to Corporal. During that battle, Reckless Made 50 trips to the front carrying critically needed supplies in, and wounded men out.  During the battle for outpost Vegas, fighting was so fierce that only two men made it out alive and without wounds. Reckless was wounded twice – but kept going. Exciting News! We've Got A New YouTube Channel - Watch, listen and most definitely subscribe and share! Ep. 60 — How history, geography, lineage, and duty converged to shape this retired four-star General's decorated career / James L. Jones, Commandant, United States Marine Corps, Commander, United States European Command, Former Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, & Chairman, Jones Group International. It was by no means pre-ordained but perhaps it was inevitable. Born in 1943, the son of a Marine in WWII, in a family of Marines, and spending his early childhood and formative years in France, inspired James L. Jones to join the United States Marines Corps, where he spent a distinguished four-decade career — retiring from the Marine Corps on February 1 as a decorated four-star general.  It's a real honor to speak with my guest this week, General James Jones, who during his military career, served as Commandant of the Marine Corps, Commander, United States European Command, and Supreme Allied Commander Europe.  Upon his retirement, Jones served as Chairman of the Congressional Independent Commission on the Security Forces of Iraq and later as Special Envoy for Middle East security. President Barack Obama then invited Jones to serve as his National Security Advisor. In that capacity, Gen. Jones had the rare opportunity to see then-Prime Minister, now-President, Vladimir Putin, up close and personal.  In this fascinating wide-ranging narrative, Jones describes how over breakfast with him and President Obama in July 2009, Putin shared his litany of grievances that Jones believes have shaped the Russian leader's hostility and aggression towards NATO and towards Ukraine, with an imminent threat to invade that country, potentially triggering a global conflict. Jones now leads a global strategic advisory firm, Jones Group International, based here in the Washington DC area. I know you'll enjoy this conversation as much as I did and will find it both highly informative and relevant given Putin's potential invasion of Ukraine.

Meet Wayne Terronez Wayne was raised by a teenage single mother in Illinois. His mother was 17 when he was born, and she dropped out of high school. Due to her limited education and job skills, he and his brother were raised on state assistance. They were in and out of three foster homes before the age of ten. Wayne knew from an early age how it felt not to afford to play sports because his family was poor. Had it not been for his aunts, uncles, and coaches paying for his registration fees and equipment, he would have been unable to play sports. Wayne often reflects on those early memories and how he felt, and he wants to help as many youth athletes as possible not feel how he did as a child. He also has overcome being a teenage father. Wayne knew the value of education and worked full time, stayed in school, and graduated high school on time at the age of 18. He joined the United States Marines Corps right after graduating high school at the age of 18. He will retire from the United States Marine Corps as a Master Gunnery Sergeant (E-9) after more than 29 years of service in January 2022. In the podcast, he shared that as he prepared to retire, he began to look at things he wanted to do after retirement, which led to helping the community. We discuss how his goal of helping the underprivileged led to creating Pathway to Sports and that data has shown that youth are more likely to graduate high school if they participate in sports. Pat Grillo shares how a vendor decision cost his 35 year company over 10 million dollars in sales and how it changed his business and life for the better. Did that get your attention? It can happen to any entrepreneur. You choose a vendor partner that has products that your clients can use and you enter into a relationship with them that allows you to provide better pricing to your clients and higher margins to you. Over the years you build trust together and you have an increasing amount of your business that is built off that stream of revenue. But what happens when that vendor you trusted for years cuts you out of the picture and starts selling directly to the client at a lower price and then cancels your relationship with you so you can no longer sell their product? Think this is a rare occurrence in the world of business? It is not. Take a listen and learn what Pat Grillo and his team learned and did and what they had in place before the floor fell out that has enabled them to grow their business to a different level. Pat Grillo is the founder and CEO of Atrion Communication Resources, Inc (Atrion).  Atrion was incorporated in June 1985 as a reseller and integrator of state-of-the-art data communications equipment and services.   Pat is a pioneer in the computer networking, cyber security and advanced technology industries.  He was particularly instrumental in the creation of the value-added reseller (VAR) channel model that now forms the backbone of high-tech industry sales and service worldwide. Under Pat’s leadership over the past 35 years, Atrion has evolved into an information technology industry leader.   Prior to founding Atrion, Pat gained more than 10 years of experience in sales and management for several high-tech companies, leveraging that experience and knowledge to further Atrion’s success every year since its founding.      Pat’s experience and deep commitment to total customer satisfaction allows Atrion to specialize in working with Fortune 1000 companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Air Products, Armstrong World Industries, Dun & Bradstreet and Merck Pharmaceuticals.  He also established vendor-partnering agreements with a number of the leading pharmaceutical and financial companies in the New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania region. Additional career highlights include the co-founding of Atrion Networking Corp in 1988 and 1NService Corporation in 1997.  He served for two years as 1NService Board Chairman.  Pat is currently a member of numerous manufacturer executive advisory councils, member of CMP’s BoB Conference Advisory Board, Secure World Expo Advisory Board, Ingram Micro Security Advisory Board and ICS Board of Directors. Pat served four years in the United States Marines Corps and is a Vietnam Veteran.  Pat is committed to supporting Veteran and First Responder causes and has raised more than $50,000 for charities like Folds of Honor, NY Run for The Fallen, Wounded Warrior Foundation, NPower, Operation Shoe Box and several police & fire organizations. . In September 2019, Pat started the Atrion Charitable Foundation. The foundation will allow Pat to grow the company’s and Pat’s philanthropic endeavors.

She has 24 years in the United States Marines Corps, traveled to 41 countries (and plans to double that number), has started 3 startups, has failed miserably and lost everything (to the point of becoming almost homeless), and has self-published three books. She's always looking for her next adventure. She's lived a life of no regrets, never holding anything back, always building on her experiences and failures to grow who she is as person and a contributing member of society.

This week's episode is a companion to the Marine Corps Times article Dr. Shauna Springer and I coauthored on how we can talk about suicide. As we talk about in the show, a Marine Corps colonel was recently quoted as saying that "suicide is a shameful act." We get into why this is not accurate and how to productively talk about suicide and how to help those suffering and the loved ones of those who have completed a suicide. Read our article here   This week I am joined by Dr. Shauna Springer and Eric Strom.   Shauna Springer is a licensed clinical psychologist. She is the TAPS Suicide Prevention & Postvention Senior Director who is known by many service members and veterans as “Doc Springer” based on the trust she has earned within the Tribe and her role as a trusted advisor to many who have served within the military. Dr. Springer has helped hundreds of warriors reconnect with their tribe, strengthen their most important relationships, and build lives that are driven by their deepest values.   Eric Strom is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in MN and is a member of the MN Army National Guard. Eric spent 5 years as an active duty Marine and deployed twice to the Persian Gulf. Many times the topic of suicide is discussed with a helpless and morose tone, but this conversation is not that. Doc Springer fills us in on how we can empower ourselves and our friends.   Dr. Springer discusses some of the concepts from her upcoming book, "The Fox in Our Gut" and how the bonds of love forged in war are stronger than the despair we can feel. In today's episode we speak with Patrick Benson of War Horses for Veterans. Patrick is an Army Vet who struggled to readjust to civilian life after returning from Iraq. He tells us about the highs and lows and what lead him to found War Horses for Veterans.   As Patrick explains on his website: "War Horses for Veterans is the premier horsemanship, networking and personal growth program in the U.S. We are a Kansas City based nonprofit that brings combat veterans from across the country together in a safe and peaceful environment. Our 3-4 day programs are designed to teach the basics of horsemanship and create a network that will provide outlets for other opportunities and friendships. We use a combination of learning to work a horse, creating new networks and Equus/Life coaching to help each veteran with their own personal growth. There is no cost to the veteran. Veterans may return as often as they like, as long as they bring another combat veteran."   Check out War Horses for Veterans today!   ========= Support Mike's fundraising for The Ironman Foundation's Gold Star Initiative    ================================   Transitions from War After his service in the United States Marines Corps, Mike Ergo started the Transitions from War blog  and Podcast to talk about his struggles returning from combat in Iraq. This is part two of our talk with Dr. David Lunow, a practicing MD and avid Spartan Racer. Dr. Lunow is passionate about helping male veterans and first responders with common hormonal imbalances caused by many things, including chronic stress, PTSD, and lack of sleep. Today we get into more about sleep and nutrition. David was born in Minnesota and raised in Indonesia to missionary parents. He completed college degrees in Biblical Theology and Biology before entering Medical School. He moved to Fort Worth, Texas in 2002 for residency in Family Practice and completed a fellowship in Emergency Medicine. He has been practicing ER medicine since 2006 in Fort Worth. During the past decade of ER work, Dr. Lunow has come to recognize that most diseases and chronic conditions are at least exacerbated by lifestyle decision if not caused by them. This has led to active research on healthy lifestyle practices which include diet, exercise, and the role that vitamins, minerals, and in some cases Hormone Replacement therapy can accomplish, not only to mitigate the development of chronic medical conditions but also to dramatically improve one's quality of life.   Find Dr. Lunow on his website ApexHealth.org to learn more and schedule and appointment.   Episode Resources: Dr. Brett Scher - Low Carb Cardiologist YouTube Channel   Support Mike's fundraising for The Ironman Foundation's Gold Star Initiative    ================================   Transitions from War After his service in the United States Marines Corps, Mike Ergo started the Transitions from War blog  and Podcast to talk about his struggles returning from combat in Iraq. Captain Stephanie Lincoln spent 10 years in the US Army before transitioning out and starting her career in nutrition and fitness. Fire Team Whiskey came about after Steph saw how many soldiers were overweight and afflicted with so many health conditions like high blood pressure, injuries, etc. This trend isn't unique to the Army ( as much as we Marines would like to believe). All branches of the military have gotten fatter, following the trend of the US population in general. When Stephanie saw this happening to active duty military she sounded off with a resounding "Hell no!" and optimized her own fitness and nutrition before founding Fire Team Whiskey, an app-based personal fitness and nutrition service geared to help active duty and military veterans take charge of their health with a ketogenic approach to eating.   I am taking the plunge into a high-fat eating template to get my body fat-adapted. Steph will be coming on the show each month to go over my progress with adapting a ketogenic nutrition approach as I am training up for Ironman Santa Rosa in May of 2019.   In this episode we also cover eating disorders, specifically my own struggle with binge eating and purging. This encompasses both nutrition and mental health, which Stephanie points out is important to address with a mental health professional.    Listeners can sign up with Fire Team Whiskey with a whopping 40% off and get started today. When Mountain Lions are Neighbors: People and Wildlife Working It Out In California (Heydey Books) Did you know that a mountain lion, known as P-22, lives in the middle of Los Angeles, that on the Facebook campus in Silicon Valley, Mark Zuckerberg and his staff have provided a home for an endearing family of wild gray foxes, or that wolves have returned to California after a ninety-year absence, led by the remarkable journey of the wolf OR-7? A movement of diverse individuals and communities is taking action to recast wildlife as an integral part of our everyday lives. When Mountain Lions Are Neighbors explores this evolving dynamic between humans and animals, including remarkable stories like rice farmers sharing their fields with Sandhill Cranes, how California's endangered desert tortoises are getting some much needed protection from a formidable ally: the United States Marines Corps, and how park staff and millions of visitors rallied to keep Yosemite’s famed bears wild, and many more tales from across the state that celebrate a new paradigm for wildlife conservation: coexistence. Beth Pratt-Bergstrom, wildlife advocate, author and California Director for the National Wildlife Federation, will share tales of wild wonder from her new book, accompanied by LA’s celebrity mountain lion, P-22 (his likeness). Praise for When Mountain Lions Are Neighbors  “A contemporary and exciting look at wildlife that we all can celebrate.”--Ed Begley Jr. “This delightful book details our ever-evolving relationship with Earth’s wildest creatures, promising that peaceful coexistence is possible.” Jennifer Holland, author of the best-selling Unlikely Friendships series "It’s one thing to say we should figure out how to live with other critters and another thing to do it. Beth Pratt-Bergstrom’s new book, When Mountain Lions Are Neighbors, provides a pretty happy litany of species we do still have around, and positive stories about how folks are getting along with them."--Mary Ellen Hannibal, author of Citizen Science, in the Huffington Post "One comes away from the book with a feeling of domesticity, mostly content that California seems to be one big happy multispecies family, but with underlying concerns, of course, as in any modern family."--Jon Christensen, LA Observed “At a time when books about conservation often and understandably focus on challenges and failures, Beth Pratt-Bergstrom’s When Mountain Lions Are Neighbors, co-published by Heyday and National Wildlife Federation, beautifully captures a series of successes, all in California. By focusing on individual case studies, and often individual animals, the book turns these examples into effective narrative stories.” Jeff Fleischer, Foreword Reviews A lifelong advocate for wildlife, Beth Pratt-Bergstrom has worked in in two of the country’s largest national parks: Yosemite and Yellowstone. As the California Director for the National Wildlife Federation, she says, “I have the best job in the world—advocating for the state’s remarkable wildlife.” She leads the #SaveLACougars campaign to build the largest wildlife crossing in North America—and potentially the world—to help save a population of mountain lions from extinction, and her conservation work has been featured by The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, BBC World Service, CBS This Morning, the Los Angeles Times, and NPR. Her new book, When Mountain Lions are Neighbors: People and Wildlife Working It Out In California, was published by Heyday Books in 2016. Beth spends much of her time in LA, but makes her home outside of Yosemite, “my north star,” with her husband, five dogs, two cats, and the mountain lions, bears, foxes, and other wildlife that frequent her backyard.
