8/8: Sheridan's Secret Mission: How the South Won the War After the Civil War by Robert Cwiklik (Author) https://www.amazon.com/Sheridans-Secret-Mission-South-After/dp/0062950649/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= In late 1874, nearly ten years after the Civil War, former slaves, or freedmen, found themselves under siege in the South by violent paramilitary groups like the White League, intent on erasing their newly won voting rights and other postwar gains and consigning them to a condition little better than slavery. President Ulysses S. Grant, vowing to enforce, “with rigor,” laws protecting the rights of former slaves, asked General Philip H. Sheridan to visit New Orleans and other Southern trouble spots to investigate the freedmen's plight, all while pretending to be on vacation. Sheridan's Secret Mission recounts the feisty Union war hero's Southern sojourn amid tragic episodes of racial terror that ultimately fueled the overthrow of Reconstruction-era protections for black rights. Sheridan made a splash on his arrival in New Orleans on New Year's Eve, accompanied by family and friends and proclaiming they were sightseers bound for Cuba. But a few days later, through trickery and force, Democrats seized control of the nearby state House of Representatives, apparently assisted by White League operatives, although the state's majority black electorate had arguably put Republicans, the party of Lincoln and the freeing of the slaves, in control of the legislature. Federal soldiers stationed nearby ushered several Democrats out of the House chamber, and Sheridan publicly denounced the “spirit of defiance to all lawful authority” in Louisiana. He threatened to round up White League leaders to face trial before military tribunals. In years past, Northerners might have rallied to support the Union hero. But the public was weary of war issues. Many Northern newspapers condemned Sheridan's actions and deplored the appearance of federal bayonets in a sovereign state legislature. Some called for Grant's impeachment. The controversial clash in the Louisiana legislature lies at the heart of this revelatory new narrative history. Sheridan's Secret Mission illuminates the bitter career of racial oppression in the United States and resonates powerfully with our contemporary “post-racial” condition. 1896 Sheridan

2/8: Sheridan's Secret Mission: How the South Won the War After the Civil War by Robert Cwiklik (Author) https://www.amazon.com/Sheridans-Secret-Mission-South-After/dp/0062950649/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= In late 1874, nearly ten years after the Civil War, former slaves, or freedmen, found themselves under siege in the South by violent paramilitary groups like the White League, intent on erasing their newly won voting rights and other postwar gains and consigning them to a condition little better than slavery. 1872 NEW ORLEANS

Mike talks with Shauna Springer and Jason Roncoroni, co-authors of the new book, "Beyond the Military: A Leader's Handbook for Warrior Reintegration." We talk about why it is so hard to successfully transition from military to veteran and rejoin civilian life. Jason and Shauna's book, which is available on Amazon now, includes practical application exercises to help you nail that transition into a meaningful and fulfilling life. I really enjoyed this interview and how Jason and Shauna find the missing keys to a good transition. For someone who talks about this in my professional and podcasting life every single day, I came away with a lot of good information and new ways of looking at transition. Order the book today! Lani Hankins is an Army vet who deployed to Afghanistan. Working in a war zone was no cake walk, but Lani found the return home to be the tougher battle. Mike and Lani talk about some of the misconceptions of trauma and PTSD - where it comes from, how it doesn't have to be from combat, and why other veterans can really turn on the hate. Lani is the host of Kruse Corner, a podcast whose name is an homage to a soldier who took his own life after returning home and becoming one of the 22 veterans per day to complete a suicide each day. Through her writing and podcast, Lani leads the charge to help those who are hurting to connect with each other and to stomp the stigma of PTSD and moral injury into the dirt. Download and subscribe to her podcast on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. This week's episode is a companion to the Marine Corps Times article Dr. Shauna Springer and I coauthored on how we can talk about suicide. As we talk about in the show, a Marine Corps colonel was recently quoted as saying that "suicide is a shameful act." We get into why this is not accurate and how to productively talk about suicide and how to help those suffering and the loved ones of those who have completed a suicide. Read our article here This week I am joined by Dr. Shauna Springer and Eric Strom. Shauna Springer is a licensed clinical psychologist. She is the TAPS Suicide Prevention & Postvention Senior Director who is known by many service members and veterans as “Doc Springer” based on the trust she has earned within the Tribe and her role as a trusted advisor to many who have served within the military. Dr. Springer has helped hundreds of warriors reconnect with their tribe, strengthen their most important relationships, and build lives that are driven by their deepest values. Eric Strom is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in MN and is a member of the MN Army National Guard. Eric spent 5 years as an active duty Marine and deployed twice to the Persian Gulf. Eric specializes in and works with those who have suffered traumatic events in their lives. Today's guest is Vietnam Vet and Green Beret, David Lucier. David shares his experiences of going from service in Vietnam and coming home, how he finally connected with the VA and is now part of the VA's "Make the Connection." David and other veterans realize that seeking help is difficult and navigating the VA system can be confusing and intimidating. MakeTheConnection.net is an online resource designed to connect Veterans, their family members and friends, and other supporters with information, resources, and solutions to issues affecting their lives. ====================== Transitions from War After his service in the United States Marines Corps, Mike Ergo started the Transitions from War blog and Podcast to talk about his struggles returning from combat in Iraq. Mike sits down to talk all things Ironman Santa Rosa with first-time Ironman finisher Sebastian Hernandez. Sebastian is a Marine Corps veteran who served in the "Old Corps" during the 1990's and calls Santa Rosa home. It's fitting that he chose this as his first full Ironman. Both Mike and Sebastian go over the training and race day, including what went according to plan and the inevitable moments where one needs to improvise, adapt, and overcome. This episode is brought to you by Tattered Beans Coffee. Each purchase directly supports the Ironman Foundation's Gold Star Initiative, which brings veterans and Gold Star families together on the Ironman race course to honor the fallen by carrying a flag with their name on it. Dr. Shauna Springer returns to the show and talks about how we can understand suicide and how to prevent our friends and loved ones from attempting or completing a suicide by taking on this enemy using the same principles of the Marine Rifle Squad. Many times the topic of suicide is discussed with a helpless and morose tone, but this conversation is not that. Doc Springer fills us in on how we can empower ourselves and our friends. Dr. Springer discusses some of the concepts from her upcoming book, "The Fox in Our Gut" and how the bonds of love forged in war are stronger than the despair we can feel. Doc Springer is the author of "Marriage for Equals" and is a regular contributor to Psychology Today. ========= Support Mike's fundraising for The Ironman Foundation's Gold Star Initiative ================================ Transitions from War After his service in the United States Marines Corps, Mike Ergo started the Transitions from War blog and Podcast to talk about his struggles returning from combat in Iraq. Chris Albert returns to cohost as we talk about the practicalities and personal experiences with meditation. Is this something just for dudes with grey ponytails and dream catchers or is there something for the rest of us? Will it turn you into a complete panoche? We get into what people can gain from a breathing practice, how it changes our moods, and gives us more choice in how we react to situations. In today's episode we speak with Patrick Benson of War Horses for Veterans. Patrick is an Army Vet who struggled to readjust to civilian life after returning from Iraq. He tells us about the highs and lows and what lead him to found War Horses for Veterans. As Patrick explains on his website: "War Horses for Veterans is the premier horsemanship, networking and personal growth program in the U.S. We are a Kansas City based nonprofit that brings combat veterans from across the country together in a safe and peaceful environment. Our 3-4 day programs are designed to teach the basics of horsemanship and create a network that will provide outlets for other opportunities and friendships. We use a combination of learning to work a horse, creating new networks and Equus/Life coaching to help each veteran with their own personal growth. There is no cost to the veteran. Veterans may return as often as they like, as long as they bring another combat veteran." This is part two of our talk with Dr. David Lunow, a practicing MD and avid Spartan Racer. Dr. Lunow is passionate about helping male veterans and first responders with common hormonal imbalances caused by many things, including chronic stress, PTSD, and lack of sleep. Today we get into more about sleep and nutrition. David was born in Minnesota and raised in Indonesia to missionary parents. He completed college degrees in Biblical Theology and Biology before entering Medical School. He moved to Fort Worth, Texas in 2002 for residency in Family Practice and completed a fellowship in Emergency Medicine. He has been practicing ER medicine since 2006 in Fort Worth. During the past decade of ER work, Dr. Lunow has come to recognize that most diseases and chronic conditions are at least exacerbated by lifestyle decision if not caused by them. This has led to active research on healthy lifestyle practices which include diet, exercise, and the role that vitamins, minerals, and in some cases Hormone Replacement therapy can accomplish, not only to mitigate the development of chronic medical conditions but also to dramatically improve one's quality of life. Captain Stephanie Lincoln spent 10 years in the US Army before transitioning out and starting her career in nutrition and fitness. Fire Team Whiskey came about after Steph saw how many soldiers were overweight and afflicted with so many health conditions like high blood pressure, injuries, etc. This trend isn't unique to the Army ( as much as we Marines would like to believe). All branches of the military have gotten fatter, following the trend of the US population in general. When Stephanie saw this happening to active duty military she sounded off with a resounding "Hell no!" and optimized her own fitness and nutrition before founding Fire Team Whiskey, an app-based personal fitness and nutrition service geared to help active duty and military veterans take charge of their health with a ketogenic approach to eating. I am taking the plunge into a high-fat eating template to get my body fat-adapted. Steph will be coming on the show each month to go over my progress with adapting a ketogenic nutrition approach as I am training up for Ironman Santa Rosa in May of 2019. In this episode we also cover eating disorders, specifically my own struggle with binge eating and purging. This encompasses both nutrition and mental health, which Stephanie points out is important to address with a mental health professional. Tom Voss is an Army Veteran who served in Iraq as an infantryman in 2004-2005. After struggling to reconcile his experiences in war, Tom knew he had to do something drastic or suicide would become a real option. Tom and fellow Army grunt Anthony Anderson decided to walk across the country to spread awareness about moral injury, a lesser known phenomenon that describes the experience of witnessing or participating in something that goes against deeply held morals or values. Tom starred in the documentary Almost Sunrise, which chronicled both the external and internal journey of healing. Rent or buy the film on iTunes, Amazon, and YouTube. Today Tom is deep into yoga, meditation, and trail running in Ventura, California. Podcasts will slowly return. I'm getting caught up, but this was an extra-special podcast. The podcasts will probably be somewhat out of order, but they'll be here. This week's show featured Dustin Von Krosigk, producer for the group Goon Squad, and a youth member of The State Advisory Council on Juvenile Justice (SACJJ). The SACJJ is made up of twenty-five people with training, experience or special knowledge concerning the prevention and treatment of juvenile delinquency or the administration of juvenile justice.Dustin was in and out of the juvenile system in Wyoming for non-violent offenses and saw the lack of focus on rehabilitation first-hand. He was also recently interviewed for a documentary on juvenile justice. It was fitting to have Dustin as a guest on Cognitive Dissonance on the second half of the "Know Your Rights" special - I read each amendment from the Bill of Rights and explained the meaning. The Angry Malcontent was ranting about car trouble since he was stuck in Fort Collins, but the Fundits were present. They debated the vote in Maine to overturn the governor's signing of a law to allow same-sex marriage. We had multiple d-bags o' the week. Finally, hip-hop group Goon Squad (produced by Dustin Von Krosigk) premiered two songs on the show.Track listing:"Know Your Rights," The Clash "Goons of Hazzard," Dead Kennedys"Disconnect," Rollins Band "I Can Be The Man You Want," Goon Squad "$timulus Plan," Dead Prez & The Evil Genius DJ Green Lantern "Sound of Da Police," KRS-One "Démocratie fasciste," Article 4 (feat.
