Strategically Scaling Your Business: The Importance of Maximizing Before Expanding

SoTellUs Time

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 29, 2024 17:13

In the relentless pursuit of growth, businesses often leap into expansion without fully maximizing their existing operations. Today, we'll explore why it's crucial to optimize what you currently have before branching out. This approach not only solidifies your foundation but also ensures sustainable growth. Story 1: Expanding Territories Prematurely Imagine a scenario where a business, eager to capture more market share, expands its service area before it's logistically and financially ready. A classic example is a business that opens a new location while their first location is still underutilized, operating just three days a week. They haven't fully exploited their marketing budget for the first location, nor do they have the staff or budget to effectively manage the new area. The result is often stretched resources, diluted service quality, and financial strain. The Correct Plan: The smarter strategy is to maximize the first location. This means fully utilizing the marketing budget to ensure the initial location operates at full capacity, ideally five days a week. Such optimization generates sufficient revenue and insights, laying a stronger foundation for any future expansion. It's about making sure the expansion is funded by the success of the existing operations, rather than stretching resources too thin. Story 2: Overextending with New Services Another common pitfall is hastily expanding services in response to customer inquiries. For instance, a business may venture into a new service area without proper research, attracted by the immediate opportunity for more work. This can lead to significant investment in equipment, materials, and labor. However, they may soon discover that the profit margins for the new service are lower than expected, or that it comes with greater liabilities. Such expansion can divert focus from their core services, potentially undermining the overall business health. The Correct Plan: Before adding a new service, it's vital to conduct thorough research. This includes talking to others already offering the service, understanding the real costs and margins, assessing market demand, and evaluating competition. It's also important to consider the marketing costs and to establish a realistic budget for growing the new service. Sometimes, referring business to others in exchange for a fee can be more profitable than stretching your business too thin. Homework: Assess Before You Expand If you're considering expanding your territory or services, take a moment this week to scrutinize the numbers and potential impact on your business. It's not just about the possibility of more revenue; it's also about managing risk and ensuring sustainable growth. Develop a detailed plan and budget before you decide to expand. Consider the following: Analyze Current Capacity: Is your current business operating at its maximum potential? Market Research: Have you thoroughly researched the new territory or service area? Financial Planning: Do you have a solid financial plan to support the expansion without jeopardizing your current operations? Risk Assessment: Have you evaluated the risks and potential impact on your current business model? Remember, expansion should be a calculated step, not a hurried leap. It should come from a position of strength, not desperation or mere opportunity. By maximizing your current business operations first, you create a stable platform from which to explore new horizons with confidence and clarity.

Burnout is one of the most common dangers to programmers over their career, and I was no exception. Software development and programming can make it difficult to find a healthy balance between work and life. My burnout was a combination of self-inflicted bad decisions, things done to me, and circumstances in my personal life.  In this episode, I share the story of my own burnout and how I lost nearly everything. Through it all, I found what really matters in life - and work became a smaller part of it. I hope this episode encourages you to share your own struggles to get help. Matt Waldman's RSP NFL Scouting Glossary illustrates with the help of 2023 NFL Draft prospect, Kendre Miller of TCU, why overextending at the collision point as a pass protector places a running back at a disadvantage with his assignments. What Is Overextending? Pretty much what you'd expect: leaning too far forward. For pass protection, overextending happens when an offensive player has his head and shoulders over his knees. While this can be a good body alignment for a running back when he's carrying the ball, it's suboptimal for pass protection. A blocker should be in an athletic stance with the knees and hips bent and the head and shoulders high enough that they aren't leaning over the knees. A good rule of thumb for a pass protector's stance: The first two parts of the blocker's body to make contact with the opponent should be the hands and the chest in that order. If the helmet and/or the shoulders are one of the first two points of contact, it's likely the blocker is overextending. Why Is Overextending Bad for Pass Protection? When a blocker delivers a punch, he should strike first with his hands and use his hips to roll upward to help him generate force through the blow. When a blocker overextends, he's far less likely for the first point of contact to be with his hands and this diminishes his opportunity to a proper punch with enough force to stifle his opponent. Placing the head over the body leads to an open invitation for the defender to make contact with the defender's head and shoulders, which can violently upend the balance of the blocker and send him backward. Overextending leads to the defender initiating the collision and with any collision sport that has elements of combat, the individual who dictates his rhythm holds the advantage. When a blocker's position forfeits the opportunity to initiate contact, he's allowing the opponent to dictate the rhythm of the interaction. It means the blocker is now reacting to the strike while the defender is generating his second movement. When the blocker dictates his rhythm on the opponent, the defender is reacting to the strike while the blocker is beginning his second move. The inherent advantage sides with the party dictating their rhythm. Overextending also puts the blocker in a position where he can't see who he's hitting during the final phases of movement prior to the collision. When the blocker's head is down during the final steps of an opponent's approach to the collision, it tips off the blocker's position early enough for the defender to adjust his path to the quarterback. Other than eliminating the blocker's first-strike initiative, power, and accuracy, there's nothing wrong with overextending. What It Looks Like with Kendre Miller Overextending is a common flaw with running back's learning to pass protect because they think they have to deliver with everything they've got to handle box defenders or a safety screaming downhill into the pocket on a well-timed blitz. Overextending is overcompensating in an attempt to deliver with power. Running backs often think they have to deliver a hit, which means getting into a hitting stance. It's not surprising that Miller, a former linebacker, overextends. Here are two plays where Miller overextends. The first shows that Miller can deliver an uppercut punch, but the overextension limits the potential for him to dictate the action from beginning to end. https://twitter.com/MattWaldman/status/1615931522132885504 The second play shows how Miller's overextension tips off his opponent. https://twitter.com/MattWaldman/status/1615947857323778049 Miller has the size, athletic ability, and physicality to become an effective pass protector in the NFL. Learning to deliver a balanced punch is about technique, timing, and the willingness to work at it. Part of working at pass protection is utilizing what you've practiced during meaningful reps.

Julia and Jonathan revisit the issue of how we manage our time and our commitments so that we can keep some sense of sanity, instead of feeling like butter being scraped over too much bread. In brief, when there's too much stuff in the closet, you need to lean harder into your pile of no's, because you probably only have about 4000 weeks to work with. How do we decide whether the juice is worth the squeeze (as it were)? Maybe we should start giving awards for thinking long and hard about a topic. @ALEX_ELLE on instagram: I stopped doing these things to create healthier relationships with others (and myself): Expecting people to read my mind. Instead, I started naming my needs and being clear about my boundaries.Pretending to be strong and okay when I'm not. Instead, I started being honest and vulnerable about my feelings.Being silent about the things that have hurt me. Instead, I started speaking up and having hard conversations with those around me.Dishonoring my boundaries to "keep the peace." Instead, I started advocating for myself.Punishing myself for not healing fast enough. Instead, I started giving myself grace and being patient with my process.Carrying emotional baggage that didn't belong to me. Instead, I started putting things down that I no longer wanted to carry.Overextending myself to make everyone happy. Instead, I started saying no, I can't, or I don't want to do that.Trying to get people to change, heal, and grow. Instead, I started meeting them where they were and accepting them for who they were.Staying in relationships that have expired. Instead, I decided to part ways with love and compassion.Refusing to let go because I was too scared of what could come next. Instead, I started releasing the things I knew were no longer healthy for my growth.Avoiding conflict and hoping things would "just get better." You deal with challenges every day, no matter where or who you are. If you're an entrepreneur, your mental state will define where your company goes — and that applies to any enterprise. This is why resilience is crucial for everyone. But here's the good news: you can build resilience to show up as your best self anywhere you go. In this episode of The Limitless Podcast, Jamie Ratterman shares five keys to building long-term resilience in business. More specifically, she delves into the importance of health, embracing failures, the power of self-reflection, the significance of a sustainable business ecosystem, and celebrating the present. Listen as Jamie explains the value of resilience in building your best self and, from there, your business! If you want to learn practical ways to build long-term resilience in your business, this episode is for you! Take a step toward business resilience with my 6-week program Social Expansion. This is all about sweating less about the algorithm and creating a potent leadership presence across the internet in less than an 1 hour each week. Learn more here: https://www.jamieratermann.com/social-expansion/social-expansion Here are three reasons why you should listen to this episode: Understand the role of resilience in showing up as your best self Discover ways to train your brain for long-term resilience.  Learn the five keys to building success for your business. Resources Break free from Instagram dependence with Jamie's Social Expansion 6-week group course! Read about the effects of 20 minutes of exercise on your brainpower in this NCBI paper! Episode Highlights [03:30] Resilience in Success  “Success does not come from continuously winning. Success comes from challenges, comes from figuring out that things aren't working exactly how you want, finding yourself getting stuck sometimes, but also, of course, celebrating those big wins” Resilience is essential to growing a successful business.  Be aware and accept the things that are holding you back.  Embrace the process and learn to bounce back and overcome adversities.  Learn to celebrate the present. This includes sitting with and showing up on the hard days.  [05:46] Your Best Self Is Your Business's Biggest Asset You are your business's lifeblood and life force. You are your business's biggest asset.  It is a must to take care of your mind, body, and spirit. By doing so, you can be your best self. Resilience is actively seeking and dismantling patterns that slow you down, creating new systems, and adjusting your mindsets accordingly.  [06:32] #1: Prioritize Your Health “You are going to get your best creativity, your best energy, and your best problem solving when you take care of your body first.” Your brain is affected by your routines, like your diet and sleep. Resilience comes from within. This is why it is crucial to prioritize your health.  It only takes 10 minutes of movement to change your day.  Take breaks to recharge! You can't be your best self if you're exhausted. [09:22] Incorporating Movement Daily  You do not need an hour-long workout to reap the benefits of your mind. A study has found that it can only take as little as 5 to 20 minutes of movement a day to get your brain working at its best.  You can use the Pomodoro Technique to create breaks during your day. Take a stroll or dance in your living room.  Think about how you plan and execute movement throughout the day. Overextending and overworking yourself can have detrimental effects.  Take breaks. Like a muscle, you can't be using your mind continuously. It needs rest too. [14:28] #2 Think of Failure as a Key to Success Challenges and failures are a part of the road to success. No one can relate to someone who's never struggled. Acknowledge problems but do not dwell on them. Show up and be solution-oriented instead.  The Scarcity vs. Abundance Paradigm: we are neither abundant nor scarce all the time. Our focus should be on finding ways to activate ourselves during scarcity.  Be mindful of your mind and body's current state. Ask yourself, "Why am I feeling scarcity?" Then pull yourself out of it.  “The more we talk to ourselves in a positive way, the more we're going to be able to flip that script a little more easily.” [19:59] #3: Embrace the Power of Regular Self-Reflection Review where you spend your time and energy regularly. Self-reflection is how you build resilience in the long term. Self-trust comes from having a more profound inner knowing of who you are. Cultivate a resilience mindset. What does your best self look like?  Reflect on your life so you can address issues you encounter.  Ask yourself, “Where do I feel stuck right now?” Then, try to find an activating step to alleviate your dilemma.  You are the energy of your business, and you want to preserve that. Don't neglect your mental health for your business! [24:40] #4: Creating an Ironclad Structure for your Business Step 1: Do not be dependent on a single channel. Instead, choose your channels and make sure they represent you well. Remember that you are creating an empire of what you do.  You do not have to have a website to start a business. But you have to have one to scale a business.  Step 2: Be inclusive in treating your email subscribers. Make them feel like they are part of an inner circle.  Step 3: Maximize your social media for brand awareness and conversion. Create a structure — an ecosystem for your business — where you allow yourself to be independent and not hold on tightly to one platform.  [31:56] #5: Celebrating Yourself and Savoring Celebrations People are always on the lookout for the next thing and very seldom in the present. We are often only present when in pain.  Celebration is about presence. It's about honoring all the work you've done.  We do not only celebrate big wins. It can be as simple as getting through a workout or getting a fantastic cup of coffee in the morning.  “All of these are wins. All of these tell us and our subconscious that we can keep winning. We can keep celebrating. We're not going to just continue to move into the next stress, the next thing we have to do.” Write down five gratitudes every single day. It gives you a better appreciation of now.  Find people you are ready to celebrate with and will make you want to continue to move. For The Love Of Men Podcast

The intention of this show is to bring together men and women in harmony and honor each other's masculine and feminine energetic cores to create healthy, polarized relationships. In this episode of For the Love of Men we discuss: The underlying belief pattern of women that feel compelled to lead: the need to create safety in feeling chosen (not understanding our own worthiness) or the need to create safety by controlling how men show up (not understanding how the masculine operates). When we see this as an attempt to create safety, she can judge herself less for the behaviors that flow from this and get that need met more easily. Relying on strategies (“rules-based boundaries”) instead of learning to trust yourself (“feelings-based boundaries”)(3:34) Mindset shift: stay present in the moment as it unfolds and check in with what you need/what lines up with your values to discern how to respond versus behaving in a way that prevents your feeling vulnerable. Interrogating questions creates a sense of urgency and competition to incite him to action(12:11). Mindset shift: if you could see yourself through the eyes of your ideal partner, how would you feel/express yourself? Leading the conversation so there isn't an awkward lull(15:00). Mindset shift: if you were to assume he is there because he wants to get to know you, what would feel good to share with him, and what would feel good to know about him? Overextending yourself on his behalf doesn't trust him to provide or to ask for what he needs and creates resentment on both sides(19:50). Mindset shift: If you could see him as wanting to give to you and how does it feel to respond from that energy? Dating strategies that make you seem “hard to get”. (34:16) Mindset shift: I am naturally attractive to healthy masculine men when I focus on feeling calm and happy and let him see that. Correcting him is a subtle form of not trusting that he is smart and capable and that he wants to use those skills to make you happy (42:05) Mindset shift: I trust he is going to figure this out (if my masculine energy can do it, he is more than capable of it too).
