Michie, an incarcerated woman serving a life sentence at a Pennsylvania prison, learned early on that she needed to advocate for her own health behind bars. Over the decades and as she grew older, she says she witnessed many friends grow ill and die behind bars. Then, in her late 60’s, she discovers that she too has breast cancer. As Michie recounts the challenges of getting older - and sicker - in prison, we explore the particular health challenges that older women face while incarcerated. This is part two of “Released To Die,” a three-part miniseries that explores what it means to have a chance to die free. On the latest episode of JohnWallStreet Presents: Big Business on Campus, a college sports podcast powered by Playfly Sports, JohnWallStreet Founder Corey Leff and Playfly Sports Chairman Michael Schreiber sit down with Tom Theodorakis, Director of Athletics at The United States Military Academy. In this 50-minute conversation, we discuss Army's unique proximity to leadership, unlocking Michie's non-gameday potential, defending a December institution, and more.
Jack is joined by Adam Michie to confront the terrifying emotions swirling around the ether after Spurs lost their absolute 'must-win' game to Crystal Palace, making the threat of relegation a harrowing reality. We dive straight into the criticisms of the current squad. While it has undoubtedly been a difficult season with plenty of mitigating circumstances, we ask why these players consistently fail to shoulder their share of the blame when things get tough. The ire then shifts firmly towards the ownership. We dissect how ENIC have managed to take their eye off the ball at nearly every opportunity, consistently choosing to prioritise the business side of the club over the actual product on the pitch. To help make sense of the growing disconnect between the club and the fanbase, we discuss Adam's brilliant book, Orientation. Adam shares his own fan odyssey, detailing his disillusionment with top-flight football and how swapping the Premier League corporate machine for a season ticket at Leyton Orient helped him rediscover the true soul of what it means to support a football club. Adam also tackles a great selection of listener questions, offering his best 'mental health playbook' for surviving our current existential crisis. We debate the provocative idea of whether winning trophies might actually be bad for Tottenham in the long run, before finishing with a definitive ranking of the biggest derelictions of duty from the owners this season. Just because your business is successful, doesn't mean it's valuable. 2. A lot of times, what the sellers really want is to do something else, be that retirement, or investment in another business, or to come to the office less often, or not have the responsibility of managing people anymore. 3. When you're a successful entrepreneur, chances are, you have ignored a lot of well-meaning, but poor advise. And, your impulses, which may or may not scale, have caused a lot of your success. Just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, Rusty sits down with consultant and PlayFull Podcast host Kristine Michie for a lively conversation about the role of joy, play, and ice cream in sustaining the nonprofit workforce. Kristine shares how her lifelong roots in activism shaped her worldview, and how her consulting firm, ImpactFull, emerged with a mission to help social-change leaders weave fun, creativity, and moments of levity into the everyday grind of mission-driven work. Together, Rusty and Kristine explore why morale is so fragile in the current climate—and why nurturing hope, agency, and human connection is essential for impact.Drawing on insights from nearly 200 interviews with changemakers, Kristine describes how play reduces stress, builds community, fuels innovation, and restores the emotional stamina required for nonprofit work. She offers practical strategies for leaders and funders—such as incorporating playful tools into board development, gamifying engagement, and creating small rituals of joy that strengthen team culture. Through stories, laughter, and yes, shared ice cream, the episode highlights a simple but powerful truth: when nonprofits integrate play into their work, they replenish the spirit needed to keep going and keep changing the world.Related Episodes:Happy, Healthy Nonprofit People - with Beth KanterSocial Impact Grief: How to Mourn AND Organize in 2025 - with Meico Marquette WhitlockLinks to Resources:ImpactFull (Kristine's consulting practice)The PlayFull PodcastRusty Stahl: Defending Civil Society in a Time of Political Threats (episode on PlayFull Podcast)Durfee FoundationChangemaker CampGuest Bio:Kristine Michie is Founder of ImpactFull, Inc., creator of Provocative Joy Retreats, Changemaker Camp, and host of the PlayFull Podcast: Bringing Fun to the Serious Work of Changing the World. When I first connected with Jason Trew (callsign: TOGA), I knew this conversation would challenge some assumptions about where design thinking belongs. Jason is an Air Force fighter pilot and strategy leader turned professor. What emerged from our conversation wasn't just another story about design thinking adoption, but a deeper exploration of what he sees happening when we distinguish between capital-D Design Thinking and lowercase-d design thinking, and why that distinction matters for everyone trying to create meaningful change. Jason's journey from F-15 pilot to design educator reveals something crucial about how design thinking transforms not just what we do, but who we become as problem solvers. His work with thousands of Air Force officers, his deployment experiences in classified operations centers, and his current role (*at the time of recording) teaching at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) offer unique insights into how design thinking functions when the stakes are genuinely high. Listen to Learn About: What's the critical difference between capital-D Design Thinking and lowercase-d design thinking, and why does this distinction matter for practitioners? How can design thinking principles function effectively in highly structured, high-stakes environments where traditional approaches dominate? What role does psychological safety ("feeling safe, supported, and stretched in meaningful ways") play in enabling creative problem-solving? How do we balance the need for systematic approaches with the emergent, integrative nature of actual design work? When should leaders prioritize conditioning people into a "ready stance" versus teaching specific design methods? Our Guest Col Jason "TOGA" Trew (US Air Force, retired) represents a fascinating intersection of military leadership, academic rigor, and design practice. After graduating from the U.S. Air Force Academy and flying F-15s, Jason spent his final military decade revolutionizing how the Air Force approaches strategy education and leadership development. He earned a PhD in the history of technology, served as Dean and Vice Commandant of the Air Force Leadership School, and led design teams for Space Force education initiatives. Now a Professor of Design* Management at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Jason brings a unique perspective on what happens when design thinking meets organizational realities where failure isn't an option. (*At the time of recording.) Episode Highlights [02:10] Jason's journey from F-15 fighter pilot to design educator through strategy school and a PhD in technology history [03:30] Discovery of a book dedicated to Icarus as hero rather than cautionary tale, sparking interest in playfulness complementing practicality [04:20] How design thinking became curriculum at Air Force Leadership School serving 4,000 students annually [05:10] Jason's certification in Lego Serious Play for facilitating innovation sprints and strategic thinking workshops [07:20] The crucial distinction between capital-D Design Thinking and lowercase-d design thinking [09:00] Capital-D focuses on activities and checklists; lowercase-d develops embodied sensibility for knowing what to do next [11:40] Design thinking as conditioning people into a ready stance for handling surprise rather than teaching linear processes [13:00] Why Jason believes design thinking changes the people involved, with problem-solving as bonus rather than primary goal [14:40] How design thinking shifts perception to see multiple options beyond binary choices [15:30] Jason's approach to ambiguous assignments that allows students to surprise him with creative solutions [17:30] Learning design principles that avoid constraining student intelligence for the sake of rigid academic standards [18:50] Design thinking's spillover effects on leadership and education beyond formal design practice [22:40] Design thinking as fundamentally human activity connected to living well and building better communities [25:10] Coffee shop door story illustrating how design changes your eyes to see problems everywhere [26:40] Design as integrative discipline that's undisciplined in the best academic sense [28:40] Framework of design as expedient - practical, opportunistic, and contextual rather than optimal [30:00] Why expedient design requires ethical sensibility to guide this human superpower responsibly [32:30] Jason's faith that if we designed current systems, we can design something better [36:40] Deployment story of creating psychological safety in classified military operations center [38:30] Using Lego as thermoplastic polymer strategic thinking tool to overcome initial skepticism [39:00] Daily check-ins asking team members if they feel safe, supported, and stretched in meaningful ways [41:10] Danger of treating organizational roles as reality rather than abstractions of actual people [43:30] Failed redesign of Air Force Leadership School and lessons about empathy work threading through entire processes [46:00] Dawan's diagnostic questions about organizational readiness and past innovation attempts [48:30] Strategy for identifying key voices—influencers, critics, curmudgeons, and creators—in organizations [49:00] Power of storytelling as diagnostic tool and method for strategic thinking [50:40] Interest in story casting and narrative intelligence using physical artifacts like Lego Serious Play [51:00] Connection to UN Principles for Responsible Management Education and sustainable development goals [52:40] Jason's call for partnership in bringing design skills to local and systemic governance challenges Questions to Help You Go Deeper Learning What surprised you most about Jason's distinction between capital-D and lowercase-d design thinking, and how does this change your understanding of design thinking's role in organizations? Which aspects of Jason's "expedient" framework for design seem most valuable for your context — the practical, opportunistic, or contextual elements? How does Jason's experience with ambiguous assignments challenge your current approach to giving direction or defining success criteria? Leading Where in your organization would Jason's "safe, supported, and stretched in meaningful ways" framework create the most value for team performance? How might you help your team understand the difference between learning design methods and developing a design sensibility? What would success look like if you implemented Jason's approach to activating the full diversity already present in your team? Applying What's one small experiment you could run next week with leaving an assignment or challenge more open-ended? Which current organizational challenge could you address by focusing on conditioning people's "ready stance" rather than teaching them specific methods? How could you adapt Jason's storytelling diagnostic approach to better understand your team's readiness for change? Practicing How will you build the habit of distinguishing between roles/responsibilities (abstractions) and the full capabilities of people in those roles? What support or resources do you need to practice Jason's approach of setting conditions rather than controlling outcomes? Who could you partner with to practice the kind of empathy work Jason describes as threading through entire processes? I wouldn't say I have a love hate relationship with casting, but I would say it's complicated. On one hand it feels like I really need to gear up for it mentally because each time is an experiment and it's a long process. But when it works, which thankfully has been more often than not, I'm left with a handful of shiny things to weave into my work. On the days I've felt a little more blocked, I've sat at my bench and carved crude rings from wax and it's honestly quite cathartic. Maybe one day I will cast them, but I'm a hand fabricator at heart. My guest today is Christina Michie, and she (on the other hand) has wax and molten silver running through her veins. An accomplished metalsmith, her curiosity to learn as much as she could about the craft led her to wax carving and casting. Initially for herself, but she quickly discovered that other jewelers wanted to purchase her castings to incorporate in their work and Creative Casting was born. I really enjoyed talking with Christina and her enthusiasm for the craft and for learning. We talk about the impact of personal experiences on creativity and the challenge of balancing multiple creative pursuits. Christina shares her insights on navigating social media, reducing overwhelm with good organization and focus, finding her niche in the jewelry industry, and managing burnout. Follow Christina... Road to Detection: Training Tips for Scent Detection Handlers, Competitors and Enthusiasts
Today I'm joined by Lane Michie and her tiny dog, Wendel. Their journey in nosework began nearly four years ago but despite the relatively short time in the sport, they have participated in what equates to almost ten years' worth of trials due to their extensive trial and travel schedule. The duo has traveled for trials extensively across North America, reaching locations as far east as Nova Scotia and as far south as Arizona. They currently compete in eight different organizations across Canada and the USA, trialing at the highest levels available in nearly all of them. Wendel recently made history by becoming the first mixed-breed dog to obtain the Grand Master title in the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC). They are now focused on achieving additional titles, including the SDDA Elite Champion and Grand Master Champion, as well as the NACSW ELT 1. In this episode, we explore the journey of getting into nosework, the various organizations involved, and the emotional highs and lows of trialing. Lane shares insights on the importance of training foundations, the all-or-nothing approach in trials, and the supportive community that surrounds our sport. 00:00 Introduction and Background 02:20 Journey into Nose Work 08:08 Trialing Experiences and Organizations 16:53 The Importance of Community in Nose Work 20:09 Training Techniques and Trial Preparation 23:06 Advice for Newcomers 26:13 Lightning Round and Wrap-Up

Finally I got Scott Michie on Singletrack. It's only taken 315 episodes. And all it took was Scott heading back to Chamonix for another dance around that big white mountain. Over the last few years Scott and I have trained together, run many trails, and climbed many mountains. And in a couple of weeks we'll both be in Chamonix together. He will run UTMB, for the second time while I put on a bib for OCC. In this episode we'll chat about Scott's experience at UTMB a couple years ago and how he's approaching training and preparation differently. Oh, and we're both very very excited about it all. For Chicago teachers, a note from the principal detailing their assignment for the upcoming school year is a mere formality. Some return to the same grade level or subject as the year before. But for others, including veteran teacher Gregory Michie, the switch was a “sucker punch.” Michie was reassigned to teach media literacy to all grade levels, from kindergarten through eighth grade, a challenge he hadn't encountered before. In a series of diary entries, he chronicles his experiences of his final year in Chicago Public Schools. Now readers can learn from Michie's experience in his published book, “176 Days: A Teacher's Diary of an Unexpected Year.” Reset sits down with Michie to learn more about the lessons he learned. For a full archive of Reset interviews, head over to wbez.org/reset.

In this episode I discuss the story of the rich young ruler, which is found in Mark 10:17-22 and its parallels in Matthew 19:16-22 and Luke 18:18-23. I outline the problems with the dominant two-source theory of the synoptic problem in New Testament studies and advocate for the Farrer-Goulder-Goodacre Theory, which posits that Mark was written first, followed by Matthew, and that Luke used both as a source. I then explain the importance of oral tradition on the development of the Gospels and how traditions like the story of the rich young ruler must be interpreted within the larger framework of the Gospel narratives themselves and the tradition units with which they were transmitted. In all three Gospels, the exchange with the rich young ruler is preceded by stories that demonstrate the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and the need to accept Jesus with the humility of a child. Those traditions contextualize the response that Jesus has to the rich young ruler, which demonstrates that his attitude towards his wealth is idolatrous and similar to the self-righteousness of the Pharisees. We then look at how this text doesn't support socialism and how a historically grounded interpretation of this story demonstrates the dangers of wealth and the responsibility that the wealthy have towards those that are in need. You know that we are Covid-safe folks and advocate for a society that should take the Coco seriously, but there's so much propaganda, misinformation, ignorance and such around the Novel Coronavirus that we've found it very difficult to navigate the world in 2023 and know how to live in a way that protects us and others from a virus that can potentially fuck up your body permanently.A bit ago, we said offhandedly in an intro that if we had any listeners that were epidemiologists, we'd love to ask some questions about what is safe to do these days. See a movie? Go grocery shopping? Leave the house? We have a VERY literate audience, and a number of epidemiologists listen apparently because we got a number of offers. The first person to reach out was one of our guests today epidemiologist Zoe Spieler, a listener, and her friend Michelle Dressner, another epidemiologist.Even though initially, they were just going to answer our questions privately, a lot of listeners reached out and wanted to know the answers as well, so we asked Zoe and Michie if they'd mind us recording the convo and putting it out as a bonus, and they were game! First of all, HUGE THANKS to them for doing this, and second of all, GIANT THANKS TO THEM because not only did they answer our questions, but Zoe and Michie did a broad survey of the scientific literature first! We get into the current state of the scientific consensus around the Coco, what are the current suggested safe procedures, and a lot of other stuff, including why so many people have lost their goddamn minds these days! Hopefully this will help you as you decide what to do for the holidays!Support the show on Patreon (two extra exclusive episodes a month!) or pre-order a new t-shirt or get a discounted old shirt! Selling a business is more than just finding the right buyer; it's about taking the necessary steps to effectively prepare for this major transition. In this episode, A.J. welcomes Kirk Michie from Candor Advisors to discuss the six key steps for a successful business sale. They talk about the importance of understanding your purpose in business, why entrepreneurs need to be more open to outside help, and the indispensable role that trusted financial advisors can play when you're looking to sell your business.About Kirk Michie:Kirk Michie is the Founder and currently the Managing Partner of Candor Advisors, a company providing transaction advisory services to successful founder-led businesses. With 30+ years of industry experience, Kirk has built an exceptional career in strategic planning, investment, and legacy preservation. He has leveraged his entrepreneurial wisdom to guide business owners, entrepreneurs, and high-net-worth families through complex financial decisions. He has an impressive record, having managed over $1 billion in capital allocation and assessed over 2,000 direct investments. Kirk is also the Founder of EBITDA University, which offers learning programs about selling businesses. Kirk is not just a financial advisor but a thought leader, having spoken at numerous prestigious events and organizations, including Association for Corporate Growth events, Vistage, and Entrepreneurs Organization gatherings.Episode highlights: Entrepreneurs often find it hard to seek advice, especially when they're faced with crucial inflection points in their business growth. However, if you want to achieve the right outcome for you, whether that's the most money or the best legacy control, asking for help and finding a trustworthy person to lean on throughout the process is a necessary step. (05:09) Effective communication is essential in every business aspect, and selling a business is no exception. One powerful technique that can significantly impact your business exit outcome is Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP). It offers great tools for comprehending different communication styles and processing modes, leading to better mutual understanding and more successful sales outcomes. (09:52) When you're hiring an advisor for a capital event, it's essential to look for someone whose expertise combines three different skill sets for different parts of the sales process. According to Kirk, the most successful sales outcomes happen with advisors who play these three roles: guru, guide, and gladiator.. (16:10) There are six key steps that lead to a successful business sale: knowing your why, matching a buyer's why with yours, professionalizing financials, not giving up too much too soon, seeking guidance from experts, and having reasonable expectations. (24:19) Finding your ‘why' is essential when preparing to sell your company or take on investment capital. Understanding this will help you optimize your financial sale or process, ultimately leading to a successful sale and a smooth transition. (33:15) Kirk's best advice for entrepreneurs:“If you're the entrepreneur and you're selling, you're still Don Quixote, we're Sancho Panza. It is your hero's journey. But the critical thing is pick your Guru Guide Gladiator and lean on them. That doesn't mean stop listening to other good advice that you've used to build your business, but lean on that person for their experience, their scar tissue, their perspective. Because if you've found the right advisor, you're going to get to the right outcome for you, whether that's the most money, the best terms, the best legacy control, you're going to get to the right outcome if you collaborate the right way on your sale.” (05:54) Connect with Kirk: LinkedIn Instagram YouTube Resources Mentioned: Use the code ‘B8FP' to receive a 25% discount off any EBITDA University program Candor Advisors Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action by Simon Sinek Follow Beyond 8 Figures: Linkedin Twitter Website Affiliate Disclaimer: Some links in this episode are affiliate links.
