Black Monday wasn't quite Black Monday this year — mostly because it extended from Sunday to Tuesday. The Denver Broncos fired Vic Fangio before most of the rest of the league even kicked off on Week 18, and after waffling for an extra day, the New York Giants parted ways with Joe Judge in a surprisingly unsurprising move on Tuesday. Between then, the Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings & Chicago Bears also relieved Brian Flores, Mike Zimmer & Matt Nagy of their respective services. After kicking off the podcast chatting about what drove the highest ratings for the NFL in a half-decade, Charles Robinson & Yahoo's Dan Wetzel deep dive into the five major head coach roles that opened up this week and what fans could expect next. Why the surprising move out of Miami? Will Minnesota be a coveted job, or is Kirk Cousins radioactive? Which current coordinator is the leader in the clubhouse for the Broncos job? (19:40)Next, Charles & Dan take a listener question and rank the performance of 2021's slate of rookie head coaches. Now, obviously Urban Meyer is last in that line, but we promise, the results will surprise you. (53:35)Finally, the guys look ahead to this weekend's slate of Wild Card games and preview Raiders/Bengals, Patriots/Bills, Eagles/Buccaneers, 49ers/Cowboys, Steelers/Chiefs & Cardinals/Rams. Today's word of the day is 'Black Monday' as in the worst day in the NFL to be a head coach or general manager. What happens on that day? It's the first day after the final day of the regular season. NFL's Black Monday has come and gone and coach firings hit the wide spectrum of predictable like the Chicago Bears' Matt Nagy, to completely unexpected like the Miami Dolphins and Brian Flores parting ways. With the Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, and New York Giants getting in on the action as well moving on from either or both their head coaches and general managers alike, it was an eventful day across the NFL. While some coaches like Brian Flores, Vic Fangio, and Mike Zimmer have clear interested from elsewhere across the NFL, others like Matt Nagy have more uncertain futures. How these job openings are impacted by the 2021 rookie quarterback class and why the New York Giants GM decision could end up impacting Joe Judge's future in the Big Apple. Along with the Las Vegas Raiders, Jacksonville Jaguars, and potentially the Houston Texans, which open head coaching job is the best situation? With Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers potentially on the move this season, some teams are uniquely positioned thanks to their potential more than their current roster. Especially one roster that should be a popular offseason destination as a playoff contender in 2021. On one hand, Week 18—and the unprecedented Game 17s—brought a weekend full of duds. On the other hand, it did bring the weirdest Sunday Night Football game ever contested, a prisoner's dilemma game between the Raiders and Chargers, who could have moved to the postseason with a truce but instead Vegas (after a moment of hesitation) grabbed the win. Conor and Gary discuss the wisdom and logic behind Rich Bisaccia's and Brandon Staley's decisions in overtime, as well as the outright absurd performance of Justin Herbert. There were other games too! A look at Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers somehow surviving another week, how Jimmy Garoppolo dragged the 49ers back in L.A., why Saints fans surely hate the Rams even more than they did before, and how the real Trevor Lawrence stood up and the Colts collapsed with an all-time brutal loss in Jacksonville.
