There is a road that is known as the most dangerous road in America. It's called the "Million Dollar Highway". There is a 12-mile stretch of winding mountain road, and if you're driving south you'll be on the cliffside, with no guardrails! The origin of the name is unclear. But the locals say "You'd have to pay me a million dollars" to drive that stretch in the snow. Any mistake can lead to severe consequences.

In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, Sandy and I talk about our travels throughout the beautiful state of Colorado. We spent a little over a week in Durango at my cousin, Becky, and her husband Bill's house. While in Durango, we took a tour on the Durango to Silverton train, spent time on the lake, and took in a chuck wagon dinner. After Durango, we took the Million Dollar Highway into Montrose. We spent a couple of days in Montrose. We stayed with our friends Trina and Tara O'Brien and then explored the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Following Montrose, we continued north to Grand Junction. Working around my book signing schedule, we were able to check out the Colorado National Monument Park. We wrap up the episode talking about our time at Rifle Gap and Rifle Falls State Parks before spending a day relaxing in the hot springs at Iron Mountain Hot Springs in Glenwood Springs.
A 7-day road trip plan through the back roads of the Rockies from Denver to Durango, including the Great Sand Dunes, UFO Watchtower, and the Million Dollar Highway

Jill K DeWit: And I'm Jill DeWit and this is the Land Academy Show from the road. Sorry, I had to just throw that in there. Steven Jack Butala: This is episode number 1,957 and today we are talking about the land component of affordable housing. It's a in depth discussion that we had in the most recent career path alumni call. Jill K DeWit: Career path alumni. Steven Jack Butala: And then Jill's going to talk about the role of marketing in this, what we call modern land flipping currently. How we do it now. Jill K DeWit: What I do now is not what I was doing five years ago. Steven Jack Butala: Exactly. Jill K DeWit: It's going to be cool. I want to say too for a few minutes, like we are coming to you from the road, we happen to be in Colorado, and if you could just imagine as I look at the camera and I shift my eyes about four inches to the left over the monitors that I'm looking at, it is the most dreamy, beautiful tree lined blue sky view. It's what? 70 degrees today? Steven Jack Butala: Yeah. Jill K DeWit: So we were on our bikes all day yesterday. We had to race home to not get in the rain yesterday. It was so flipping fun. Steven Jack Butala: We're in Durango. By the time this is airs, we will not be. Jill K DeWit: True. Steven Jack Butala: And we'll be out of Ouray also. We're going up to Million Dollar Highway in our new RV. New to us RV over the next week. Jill K DeWit: Exactly. We're loving it. Steven Jack Butala: I just installed this studio today, so we'll see if it works. But I'm pretty happy with myself. Jill K DeWit: We'll see if it works. Steven Jack Butala: I'm generally not happy with myself and I'm pretty happy with myself right now. Jill K DeWit: Why are you… I'm the opposite. I roll around. I am generally happy with myself, but if nobody else is, I don't care. I'm happy with myself. Steven Jack Butala: That's why this works, Jill. Jill K DeWit: I could look like, I don't know what. I could be a disaster going down the street, but I might feel really good about myself. Steven Jack Butala: Your strange unwarranted positivity offsets my eternal negativity. So we're always at zero. Jill K DeWit: Do you know what's really nice? A lot of negative people say, “Oh no, I'm not negative. I'm a realist.” You don't say that. Steven Jack Butala: No. Jill K DeWit: It's really kind of funny. Exactly. I just want to add that this is us. This is us on the road. We're going to be on the road for months now you guys. This is our first podcast on this trip, so this is number one of how many weeks we should start keeping… We should put that in there. Keep track of it's episode 1957, but it's episode one of this… What am I trying to say? This particular outing and our outing might be eight weeks, it might be 12 weeks, it might be 20 weeks depending how today goes. So you never know how this is going to end, but I just want to add, the whole point I'm trying to make is I'm buying and selling land all over the country. I'm not standing there. I'm not going there. I'm not seeing it. I'm not doing anything of that. Why do I have to stay in any one state or any one country? Steven Jack Butala: I love this thought, this methodology. Jill K DeWit: Yeah. I want to hit this home to all of you. If you want the flexibility of, hey, if you're tired of going to office, I understand and you want to be your own boss and have your own life,

Danger-Zone Most Dangerous Roads Danger-Zone is the title of this weeks pod. Ruthann explores Americas most dangerous roads. Is your state in the rankings? We talk about where most people run risk of being killed just by being on these roads. Danger is every where if you are on this list Americas Bad Roads Although the consistent, unchanging open road can be relaxing, some roads require a bit more concentration. While there are terrifying yet thrilling roads all over the world, there are plenty of roads that offer adventure right in the US. From Alaska's Dalton Highway to Florida's Highway 1, these are the most dangerous roads in the US. Alaska's nightmarish Dalton Highway stretches some 400 miles through remote forests, tundras, and over the Yukon River. What makes this drive extra scary is its 240-mile stretch with no gas stations, restaurants, hotels, or any other basic services. The road also contains multiple signs warning of steep grades and avalanches.A 181-mile stretch of Interstate 15 between Las Vegas and Los Angeles was ranked as the most deadly stretch of road in the US in 2010. The study revealed that in 15 years alone, 1,069 people had perished on the road. A stretch of US Route 550 traverses three 10,000-foot mountains passes, and winds across steep cliffs and hairpin curves, all without guardrails. Local folklore says Colorado's Million Dollar Highway got its name because an early traveler said you'd have to pay her one million dollars to drive it again. Montana is known for being one of the most dangerous states to drive in, mostly because of its long stretches of highway in between towns. So if you have an accident, you're on your own, as it takes an average of 80 minutes for an ambulance to arrive Highway 2 is particularly dangerous; it maintains a 70mph speed limit through mountainous roads. The road has proven to be so treacherous that Washington State recently spent $60 million to make the road safer.Interstate 45 was ranked as the second-deadliest highway in the US in 2016 after analysts found that the highway averaged 56.5 fatal accidents per 100 miles of roadway. The most dangerous part of the route is in Houston, with 51 fatal wrecks from 2011 to 2015. So tune in to this weeks Podcast and see if you are in the Danger-Zone on Americas roads!

The Amateur Traveler talks to Erik Smith again about his trip to the Four Corners area in the American southwest. Four Corners is the spot where 4 U.S. states meet: Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. While the Four Corners spot itself is just a photo op (an probably at the wrong place), the area around it contains some amazing scenery and historic sites. Erik gives us a state by state break down of the area. He tells us about National Parks nearby like Arches Canyonlands, Hovenweep, Moab, Canyon de Chelly, Rainbow Bridge, Mesa Verde , Chaco Culture, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Petrified Forest and Aztec Ruins. The area also boats the spectacular and iconic scenery of Monument Valley and a stretch of road known as the “Million Dollar Highway”. It has many Native American sites including those like Canyon de Chelly run jointly by the Navajo nation and the U.S.
