Presenting their third release of the year, roku welcomes Blanka Barbara to the label for her debut EP. Born in Poland but now based in London, Blanka Barbara first emerged in 2020 with a series of releases via her Rabbit Records imprint. Quickly catching the attention of the progressive house and melodic techno communities, the next two years would see the classically trained pianist and composer go on to record projects for Lane 8's This Never Happened, Ziger's Eat My Hat Music, John OO Fleming's Joof Aura, Mango Alley and Proton's Particles. With 2023 projects for Juicebox Music and Balkan Connection already in the books, Blanka now adds roku to her resume with ‘Ever Closer', alongside remixes from Danny Lloyd and Bondarev. Destined to be a highlight in Blanka's discography, it is the melodic stylings of ‘Ever Closer' which get the release underway. Electrically charged from the outset, its rolling rhythmic structures, striking percussion and character rich groove set the piece on a course for aural enlightenment. Dark bass stabs and haunting overlays cleverly coax across the first act, elevating momentum and mood for a finale of colourful arps and hopeful sonics. The companion piece ‘Descending Into Heaven' finds Blanka showcasing a deeper, more emotive side of her repertoire. The London resident masterfully marries blissful sonics and balmy effects over a framework of warm fluid grooves and precise percussive arrangements. Sitting at the heart of the piece is a reflective interlude, one where hopeful melodies unite in a whirlpool of textural euphoria, perfectly suited for those magical morning moments on the dancefloor. Making his label debut with the lone interpretation of ‘Ever Closer' is Danny Lloyd. With a career that spans the better part of two decades, Italian artist Danny Lloyd has etched his own unique place in progressive music history. Long a favourite of Hernan Cattaneo, the Tuscany resident has taken his smooth effortless sound to long standing imprints Asymmetric Recordings, MNL, Movement, Proton Music and more. Known for being choosy in his projects, Danny's first production of 2023 finds the Italian artist making his roku debut with a hypnotic rendition of ‘Ever Closer'. Opting for a timeless approach, the Italian artist creates a distinctive interpretation in his inimitable style; with arpeggiated fragments and airy sonics uniting over a bed of thumping beats and pulsing basslines, casting a spell over the listener across a fluid first movement, before breaking out into a tastefully restrained and deeply meditative finale. The release concludes with Bondarev making his label debut with the lone interpretation of ‘Descending Into Heaven'. Russian artist Bondarev has been a DJ for the better part of two decades, sharing the stage with some of progressive music's most iconic names, while operating as the booking manager for Saint Petersburg's famed WARPP Club. As a producer, Bondarev first emerged in 2017 with a release via Crossings, a project which would lead to key discography credits courtesy of aboriginal, Mango Alley, Proton's Particles and most recently via WARPP's label, where he operates as the A&R. Now, presenting his first remix of 2023, Bondarev debuts on roku with a powerful take on ‘Descending Into Heaven'. Buoyant and energetic across the first movement, Bondarev continues his stylized ways with rippling grooves, flashing percussion and dark stabs creating a prophetic path into the main break. Sitting comfortably in an emotive yet thought provoking space; childlike motifs and sweeping harmonies converge, rising out of calming atmospheres as the interlude evolves, eventually giving way to a thunderous drop and energetic final movement. PREMIERE: Chriss V & Olart - City Of Glass (Eri D Remix) [roku] Following on from the success of their inaugural release ‘Mythical Creatures', roku welcomes Chriss V & Olart to the label for their debut EP. Hailing from Albania, Chriss V has been a fixture of the electronic underground for the better part of two decades. Highly regarded as a DJ, Chriss has shared the stage with a variety of top international talents, with Solomun, Eric Prydz, Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren, Henry Saiz, Roy Rosenfeld, Sebastien Leger, Khen, Eli Nissan and Armen Miran being the most notable. As a producer, Chriss has been selective with his projects over the last decade, with Dbeatzion Records, Elliptical Sun Recordings and Inception being the primary landing spots for his progressive sound. Having forged a partnership with newcomer and fellow countryman Olart last year, the duo released their first ever production, a remix of ‘Sands of Time' by Gabo Martin & Jesuan M via Nikko.Z's Dopamine White. Now, continuing to build on their creative synergy, Chriss and Olart debut on roku with ‘Distance Echoes', alongside remixes from Kostya Outta and Eri D. The release concludes with Eri D also making his label debut with the lone interpretation of ‘City of Glass'. Returning from a five-year hiatus the Albanian artist was prolific from 2014-2016, racking up key releases via Abstract Space, Elliptical Sun and Massive Harmony Records. Now calling Miami home, Eri makes a welcome return to the spotlight with an inspired rendition of ‘City of Glass'. While maintaining the elusive spirit of the original, the Albanian artist crafts a deep and progressive experience all his own, a hopeful journey into an emotive hinterland, where dulcet beats, youthful melodies and transcendent designs emerge from their nicely manicured architecture, onwards to a finale of glowing atmospheres. Have a nice weekend. In this episode, I am so happy to share a masterwork by Daniel Moore/Ablekid. Not long after a move to the musical hotbed of Austin, Texas in 2009, the Ablekid moniker had seen success in various forms. Various tracks signed to Kindred Recordings (Paris) and Rapid Fire Records (Miami) in 2009 put his production style on the map. Daniel has also fostered relationships with many promo services by becoming part of the esteemed Release Promo roster in 2014. In late 2015 Daniel started his radio show on DNA Radio FM, “Pineal Sessions with Ablekid” showcasing his finest picks for the enlightened listeners he hopes to reach. Daniel’s newly released music can be found on Praveen Achary’s Juicebox Music where he has made the USA’s sole appearance on the esteemed label’s first “Elements” series, an ongoing venture that sees the label highlight talent from across the world. The release also saw a write up and 12 Questions interview from legend Mitch Alexander and Change Underground, making it a true highlight thus far in this man’s musical journey. Daniel’s continued success in the US underground is a combination of effective crate digging, silky smooth DJ skills and just the right amount of grit and determination. Recent guest spots for Electronic Groove, Decoded Magazine, and a featured regular on Cirque Noir’s Frisky radio show, amongst others, are subtle hints at the result of all this hard work and shows a depth of knowledge and attention to detail that has seen his heroes rule the underground for many wonderful tune filled years. Enjoy the music and do not forget to follow @ablekid if you don't already. On Episode 185 of the Doc and Jock Podcast Coach Joe tackles a great question from listener Mitch Alexander about getting back into lifting after an injury. Via email, Mitch asks, I'm in the middle of a self imposed few weeks off of heavy lifting. Switched up for some HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) to give the body a chance to recover. Any suggestions on how to ease back into lifting? This is a great topic and a common one! In fact Coach Joe is managing his own case of self imposed time off and just now beginning to ramp up barbell work. There are 3 keys to managing injury in Coach Joe’s mind. 1st Be proactive. Injuries generally happen because there is an imbalance in training. Be sure to sneak in opportunities to provide contrast to training sets and reps during your prep and auxiliary work to avoid injury. 2nd Assess Your Training Habits. Regarding the Sport Weighting it is easy to fall into chronic behaviors that can promote overuse injuries. Post injury one the first things you must do is look back through your training log and figuring out what you were doing to much of and limit that behavior. The worst thing we can do post injury is not train. The best thing we can do is adjust training. As Coach Joe relays his own experience with this he discusses how he limited his barbell work but added a lot more asymmetrical loading, rotational style exercise, and worked to establishing long time under tension. All of which contrast the behaviors that led to his most recent tweak. 3rd Integrate the Barbell back into your training program with movements that promote skill and positions, not load and intensity. As Coach Joe has worked for a few weeks with the movements described above and started to gain that old feeling he is also conscious of the fact that he is slightly de-conditioned, especially as it relates to the barbell. With that in mind, instead of working at percentages he is opting at working with a linear progression and going off of feel. He is also choosing partial variations that limit load like the drop snatch. Anyone coming off of an injury in any sport can pull a takeaway or two from this conversation.

This week's podcast begins by referencing a bunch of old greying folk musicians, because that's exactly what all cutting edge pop culture podcasts do. Fact. So says Alasdair Duncan, Rob Newcombe and Mitch Alexander, collectively known as Podcast! The Movie. Another fact: Katie Holmes is off the chain and back to Hollywood with a movie plot that sounds startlingly familiar... Our other coverage is devoted to Passion Pit’s Michael Angelakos and a rapid fire barrage of news snippets with our own sardonic take on them. Noone is safe - not Peggy Olsen, not Rick Rubin and certainly not YOU. Who's winning our attention this week with AV&A? Well, there's a whole bunch of new sludge metal from Baroness, some wicked old Final Fantasy game and the return of the philly cheese steak. You could be eating one right now if you really wanted! It's been a while since the podcast team did a round of Marry, Boff, Kill. Some say this is a good thing, but Al, Rob & Mitch just don't listen. What fate lies ahead of three of Tom Cruise's former flames, the cast of Dawson's Creek and three latest incarnations of Sherlock Holmes? It's a mystery, unless you tune in! Remember to follow us @podcastthemovie on Twitter. If you had a podcast, we'd do the same for you.
