Last week, the Erie Regional Airport Authority had two big announcements regarding new service from Erie International Airport. On Thursday, they announced that American Airlines was starting daily service to Chicago O'Hare airport beginning May 22nd. Then on Friday, it was released that United Airlines was returning to ERI with three daily flights to O'Hare beginning on June 1st. Executive Director Derek Martin gave us the full story on Monday's show.

American Resources Corp CEO Mark Jensen joined Steve Darling to announce that its subsidiary ReElement Technologies has signed a new commercial processing agreement with Electronic Recyclers International or ERI, the nation's largest electronics recycler and a leader in ITAD, mobility, and data destruction services. Jensen explained that under the partnership, ERI will use its global collection network and eight U.S. recycling facilities to aggregate and pre-process end-of-life magnet materials, a key source of rare earth elements used in electric vehicles, defense systems, and advanced technologies. ReElement will then refine this material into high-purity rare earth oxides through its advanced modular processing platform. This agreement marks a major advancement in building a domestic, circular, and secure rare earth supply chain at a time of accelerating U.S. demand for critical minerals. By combining ERI's scale in responsible electronics recycling with ReElement's high-efficiency refining technology, the collaboration will create a reliable domestic stream of high-value rare earth outputs. Jensen added that ERI's use of proprietary AI-driven hardware and software systems allows it to precisely identify, extract, and separate materials containing magnets and rare earth elements at high purity. Sjukvårdsministern om vårdköerna, och hur hon vill styra sjukvården i Sverige. Lyssna på alla avsnitt i Sveriges Radio Play. Att korta vårdköerna har varit ett uttalat mål för både regeringen och KD. I valrörelsen 2022 talade KD om olagligt långa köer, och målet har varit att de ska kapas.Vårdgarantin innebär bland annat att en patient ska behöva vänta i max 90 dagar på att få träffa en specialist, och max 90 dagar på operation eller behandling om det är det som behövs. Men många människor står fortfarande i vårdkö. Sjukvårdsminister Elisabet Lann (KD) menar att det finns flera förklaringar till varför så många hamnar i vårdköer.”Det handlar om brist på kompetens. Det handlar om att den kompetens som finns inte används på rätt sätt, utan att både läkare och sjuksköterskor får lägga arbetstid på andra saker, administration och annat. (...) Hade vi vetat specifikt vad det är som skapar de här köerna så hade vi inte haft de här köerna”, säger Elisabet Lann.Elisabet Lann säger att hon ser en tendens till en minskning, som hon hoppas ska hålla i sig.”Vi ser en förbättring. Köerna var som allra högst augusti 2022. Så långa köer har vi inte haft sedan. Men det går upp och ner och det varierar från månad till månad” säger hon.Ekots genomgång av väntetiderna i vården visar att det inte skett några tydliga förändringar under mandatperioden. I statistiken för de som väntat över 90 dagar för ett besök hos en specialist, respektive för en operation, syns säsongsskillnader. Jämför man olika månader med varandra både ökar och minskar köerna. Men sammantaget är vårdköerna på ungefär samma nivå. Det bekräftas även av statistik som Socialstyrelsen tagit fram till Ekot.”Tittar man på de senaste tolv månaderna från augusti 2022, jämfört med de senaste tolv månaderna från augusti 2025, för det är de siffrorna som är mest relevanta att jämföra, då är det ungefär 8 000 färre patienter som väntar. Det är alldeles för många fortfarande som väntar i kö, så det är inte så att jag är nöjd. Men jag hoppas att det här är ett tecken på en trend och en vändning”, säger Elisabet Lann (KD).Böter för regioner som inte klarar vårdgarantinFör att få ner vårdköerna har regeringen infört ett prestationsbaserat statsbidrag till regionerna. Sedan i våras finns också öronmärkta pengar för att korta köerna till operationer av grå starr, höftproteser och framfall. Det är exempel på tre operationer som är förhållandevis enkla, och därför passar bra för den här typen av satsning, säger sjukvårdsminister Elisabet Lann (KD).Bland annat Läkarföreningen har pekat på att det finns risker för undanträngning av annan vård.”Den risken finns, men regionerna och sjukvården har ju ett ansvar att beakta behovsprincipen. Den är grunden för sjukvården och det vore ansvarslöst att överge den. Däremot så visar de här stimulansmedlen att det går att göra annorlunda. Det ger en knuff i rätt riktning och visar att man kan effektivisera”, säger Elisabet Lann.I veckan meddelade regeringen att de ska utreda om regioner som inte lever upp till vårdgarantin ska kunna få böter.På vilket sätt kortar det köerna att regioner får böter?”Vi tror att det kan ge incitament som verkar i positiv riktning. Idag kan det vara ekonomiskt lönsamt att sätta patienter i kö. Det skapar destruktiva beteenden, och vi kan inte ha såna förutsättningar. Det ska inte löna sig att ha patienter i kö”, säger Elisabet Lann.Oundvikligt på sikt att staten tar över ansvaret för sjukvårdenKristdemokraterna har länge velat att staten ska ta över ansvaret för vården, och efter förra valet fick de igenom att frågan skulle utredas. I våras presenterade den Vårdansvarskommittén, som samlade representanter från alla riksdagspartier och där Elisabet Lann representerade KD, sitt betänkande. Rekommendationen blev att staten ska ta ett tydligare ansvar för sjukvården, men att den inte ska förstatligas.Elisabet Lann menar att ha kvar regionerna är ohållbart.”Även om regionerna här och nu har bättre ekonomi så kräver vårdens utveckling en typ av investeringar där förutsättningarna skiljer sig för mycket åt över landet. Jag tror på sikt att det är oundvikligt, oavsett vad partierna tycker här och nu”, säger hon.I utredningen konstateras bland annat att den statliga styrningen ofta är kortsiktig, och en orsak till det är tillfälliga statsbidrag, och kommittén menar att riktade statsbidrag endast bör användas i undantagsfall. Men i regeringens budget för 2026 finns en rad riktade statsbidrag, exempelvis för att minska vårdköerna.Elisabet Lann tycker att situationen med köer kräver det.”Jag skulle säga att med de köer och situationer vi har idag så krävs det”, säger hon.I år räknar hälften av regionerna med att de kommer gå med underskott. Samtidigt görs stora framsteg inom vården med nya metoder och mediciner, som gör att det går att hjälpa fler. Den utvecklingen kostar, något som Sveriges Kommuner och Regioner SKR tog upp sin ekonomirapport som presenterades i veckan. För att kunna följa med i den utvecklingen, med ökade ambitioner, menar SKR att det krävs antingen skattehöjningar eller ökade statsbidrag. Elisabet Lann håller med om att regionerna får svårare och svårare att följa med i utvecklingen.”Det gör att dagens system är ohållbart i längden. Man kan säga att då lägger vi de kostnaderna på staten, regeringen får betala för vårdens utveckling. Men de flesta är överens om att det är en ganska dålig ordning att det är en som betalar, och någon annan som ansvarar för verksamheten. Det blir väldigt sällan effektiv verksamhet av det. Det är inte en långsiktigt hållbar lösning”, säger Elisabet Lann.Vems vårdköerI valrörelsen 2022 sa Ebba Busch att vårdköerna var Magdalena Anderssons vårdköer.Vems är köerna nu?”Det är köer som drabbar (...) människor av kött och blod” säger Elisabet Lann.Så det är inte dina köer?”Det är vårdens stora dilemma. “We don't need to work on decoding because students have access to assistive technology and accommodations.”“We don't work on word-decoding in high school.”“Working on reading in high school is too little too late.”If you've ever heard any of these arguments, you're not alone. Unfortunately, beliefs like these do students a huge disservice. That's why in this conversation, I share a clip from my interview with Tom Parton, an SLP with a long-career of experience in secondary education, as well as literacy advocacy work. Tom Parton is a private Speech Language Pathologist in Normal, Illinois. He retired after 35 years of public-school practice. Tom is President of Everyone Reading Illinois and is a member of ERI's Legislative Committee. Tom has presented on autism and language/literacy topics at local, state, and national conferences. Tom participated in the ISBE Reading Instruction Advisory Group and Teachers of Reading Certification task forces. He is currently a member of the ISBE Dyslexia Handbook revision team. He is past-president of the Illinois Speech-Language-Hearing Association and is ISHA Honors Committee co-chair and a member of ISHA's Leadership Development Committee. We recorded another episode with Secular Pro-Life's Monica Snyder, our favorite practically co-host, to discuss Secular Pro-Life's recent survey on the differences between how both sides of the issue define abortion. A critical part of clear communication is making sure you and your dialogue partner are using the key words in the same way. Pro-life and pro-choice people often mean VERY different things when they use the word "abortion," but they don't know that, and miscommunication ensues.  This episode will help you avoid that miscommunication.
