A Word With You

I grew up around Lake Michigan. And when I was little, I used to go in it. Now I mostly just look at it when I'm in Chicago or in the Great Lakes area. Part of that is because of what happened to me when I was ten years old. My memories of that lake are memories of a struggle I will never forget. I was out with my friends. I didn't know how to swim and I was too proud to tell them. Well, I started to go under. No one took me seriously. I mean, I'm yelling. I'm trying to get some help. I'm drinking the lake! I'm in a panic, flailing around, and my friends are going, "Oh, Ron, you know him. He's such a clown!" Great! Finally, just in the nick of time, someone came. They grabbed me and they literally saved my life. Let me tell you what I contributed to my rescue. That's right, absolutely nothing. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Not Good Enough for Heaven." Our word for today from the Word of God comes from Ephesians 2:8-9. "It is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast." Okay, fasten your seat belt, because these statements out of God's Word are so radical they basically challenge every religious system in the world, whether it's Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, you name it. Because every system says, "Here are some good things you can do that will commend you to God, and He'll forgive the bad based on the good you do." But this says, "No good you can do will pay off the bad." "Not by works." Could it be any plainer? Those are radical words! Nothing you can do to contribute to your rescue. No amount of religion. No amount of being a good boy or girl. This word "saved" here indicates that there's a rescue needed. We're dying spiritually because we have broken God's laws. We're away from God. We're powerless to get back to Him. It's like me in Lake Michigan that day. You can't rescue yourself. Maybe you've been depending somehow on your own goodness to get you to heaven, or your family connections, or the money you give, or the fact that you agree with all the Jesus stuff. You've got Christ in your head but maybe not in your heart. It is, the Bible says, "the gift of God" paid for. Not by you, but by Jesus Christ. You don't pay for your gifts. Gifts are paid for by someone else. Your gift of eternal life was paid for by Jesus because you and I couldn't pay for it. He took your hell and mine. He took your payment for your sin dying on the cross. How do you get it? It says, "through faith." Faith is what happened that day I grabbed that lifeguard. I just pinned all my hopes on him. For us to be saved - to be rescued - through faith, it means that we recognize that we are drowning spiritually, powerless to rescue ourselves. Are you willing to do that? Are you willing to surrender your self-efforts in order to finally get the peace of really knowing God personally? You quit depending on your religion. It's not Jesus plus anything else. It's just Jesus. So you grab heaven's lifeguard like a drowning person would grab the person coming to rescue them. When did you do this? Have you ever had that moment with Jesus? You say, "I don't know I have." Well, then, you probably haven't. Maybe God is coming to you through this conversation today because He's courting you. He's after you. He's reaching out His hand to save you. This is life-or-death stuff - forever life or death. If you haven't pinned all your hopes on Jesus, do it now. If you're not sure you belong to Jesus, let me invite you to go to our website. It's there so I can help you nail down your own relationship with Jesus and know for sure that you belong to Him. Not just believe in Him, but that you belong to Him. Let's get together at ANewStory.com. Jesus plunged into your world to rescue you from sin. You can't rescue yourself from it. Today, as He comes to you, grab hold of your Rescuer.

You know the commandments: Do not murder; do not commit adultery; do not steal; do not bear false witness; do not defraud; honor your father and mother.” He said to him, “Teacher, I have kept all these from my youth.” Looking at him, Jesus loved him and said to him, “You lack one thing: Go, sell all you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” But he was dismayed by this demand, and he went away grieving, because he had many possessions. Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” The disciples were astonished at his words. Again Jesus said to them, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” They were even more astonished, saying to one another, “Then who can be saved?” Looking at them, Jesus said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God, because all things are possible with God.” Truth 1 Good is Not Good Enough (v.18) ‭‭Mark‬ ‭10‬:‭18‬‬ “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him. “No one is good except God alone. Exodus 20:3 “Have no other gods before Me” Truth 2 The law is not the solution; it only reveals the problem (v.19-22) Mark 10:19 “You know the commandments…” Truth 3 You cannot serve two masters; you must choose one (v.21-22,25) ‭‭Mark‬ ‭10‬:‭25‬‬ It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” ‭‭Mark‬ ‭8‬:‭36‬‬ For what does it benefit someone to gain the whole world and yet lose his life? 2 Corinthians 5:20 “We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God.” Want to receive weekly announcements in your inbox each week? https://istrouma.org/email Give Online Text ISTROUMA IBC to 73256 or go to: https://istrouma.org/give Our Website https://istrouma.org

When you're not taken seriously it can evoke feelings of discouragement, frustration and even anger. When one feels like their work is overlooked or dismissed, it's easy to dwell on the negative self-talk that any thoughts, opinions and original ideas will be disregarded and dismissed. This is especially disheartening when a great deal of effort and work has been poured into ideas and even projects that are then met with indifference or disregard. If you are like me, you have felt this before and it doesn't matter what level you're at. Others can make you feel insignificant and not good enough. Before achieving immense success with the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling faced rejection after rejection. She was told that it would be best to keep her day job because she would never be a writer and especially writing children's books. Writing children's books wasn't seen as a lucrative career. She persisted and eventually found a publisher that would publish her work. The rest is history. Her books aren't just for children. Many adults, including myself, have read them cover to cover. And as far as a lucrative career, she is worth up to a billion dollars at this point in her life. When dismissal of our ideas is repeated, it's natural for our self-confidence to erode with the questioning of our worth or validity of any input we have given or any work we may have accomplished. Here, we cover some ways to combat the feelings of discouragement, anger and even giving up when you're not taken seriously. We will focus on four ways. This week we're chatting with Reggie Morris, the boy's basketball coach at Raytown South High School, and one of this year's Blue KC Coaches with Character honorees. What is the Blue KC Coaches with Character program? Since 2017, CYITML has partnered with Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Kansas City and the Kansas City Royals for a program called Coaches with Character. Each year we recognize six coaches who are making Kansas City a better place. This year we are featuring the coaches on this podcast, because, who knows better about leadership, building teams, team chemistry and so on than successful high school coaches?Reggie Morris, the boys' basketball coach at Raytown South High School, was our second Coaches with Character recipient this year, back in May.Morris is starting his third year at Raytown South after a successful stint as the coach at Grandview High School, where his teams won back-to-back titles in 2018 and 2019. Morris' resume includes being selected as KC Metro Basketball Coach of the Year twice, the Conference Coach of the Year award winner three times, from 2017-2019, and the District Coach of the Year for four consecutive years from 2017-2020.Ultimately, though, Morris is about what happens away from basketball for the young men he coaches. Culture is huge for Morris. And his goal, like it is with our C-10 Mentoring & Leadership program, is to prepare his players, as well as other students with whom he comes in contact at Raytown South, for their next stage in life.Morris talks about all of that, defines COMPASSION, takes a swing at Pregame Batting Practice, and much more. LINKS:Here's the article about Reggie Morris as the May Blue KC Coaches with Character honoree. Here's a link to the Blue KC documentary, Not Good Enough, that Reggie and Matt reference. For more information about the C-10 Mentoring & Leadership program for high school students, visit our website. To make a financial gift to give students life-changing one-on-one mentoring, visit our secure donation page. For all episodes of the C-10 podcast and ways you can listen, click here.If you'd like to make a comment, have a suggestion for a future guest, or your company would like to help underwrite this podcast, please visit our contact page.
