Last week we had an overview of weapons throughout history and how it's a constant game of balance and oneupmanship. Now we're looking at future weapons and Scifi stuff! There's a lot of potential and a lot of interesting ideas you can use in comics and stories. We talk about a few of these and some of our faves, as well as our own inventions. Future weapons can take all different forms, many kinds of directed energy weapons, energy propelled projectiles, satellite based weapons, drone and robot technology, autonomous weapons systems etc. Biological and chemical weapons are super scary but generally pretty useless in reality, even as terrorist weapons because they're so imprecise and uncontrollable and take a lot of work to set up and deploy. This means they will hit people who aren't your target and they also have an excellent chance of not even working at all despite all the preparation and cost, so we're not even bothering with these in the discussion. One future Scifi weapon concept that always comes up are “plasma” weapons. These are super undefined and no one really knows what they are because they can be so many things. When it comes to weapons what we mean by “plasma” is the very hot gas that has free ions so that it's electrically conductive like metal. We know dangerous plasma mostly from its use as a cutting torch in welding and also the gigantic planet sized solar flares that seem to erupt from the surface of the sun are plasma that's following the huge loop of a magnetic field projecting from the sun, because it can be controlled by magnetic fields. Given this it can be used in a few different ways as a weapon: you can use it like an explosive chemical propellant for firing bullets, you can use it as a sort of flame thrower (especially effective if you can direct it with a magnetic field), you can contain balls of plasma with magnetic fields and throw them like canon shells, or you can use the plasma as an electrically conductive medium to direct lightning bolts. Directed energy weapons are very traditionally SciFi but have only ever seen limited practical usage despite the old popularity of the “Death Ray” and lasers as weapons. They're attractive because the only limiting factor is your energy source, you don't need to carry ammunition so theoretically you can have unlimited shots, they travel at the speed of light so you can't miss, they're not affected by friction or gravity so there are no ballistics to work out either, there's also no loss in energy like there is with traditional guns where the propulsive explosion badly transfers energy to the projectile. The trouble is that they don't work very well as weapons because you need to put in a LOT of energy to do any damage over a distance because they don't work well in an atmosphere, you also have to hold it on a target for a long time. This category includes the aforementioned lasers, microwave weapons, electron beams, particle beams etc They have a lot more potential as space weapons where atmosphere isn't an issue and their lack of recoil is a huge advantage. Electrically accelerated projective weapons known as “mass drivers” are another category. They are capable to much higher speeds than traditional guns or missiles because they're not limited by the compression of gasses. In this group we have Gauss guns aka coil guns, rail guns and some other variations. They use magnetic or electrical fields to accelerate projectiles. The main advantage is speed, increased safety because they don't need dangerous propellant, and shots only limited by your electrical capacity. The disadvantages of these systems is that they're very complicated, they can't use explosive projectiles, and they have a high failure rate- Railguns are the most promising system but each time they fire they produce clouds of burning fire, which is caused by layers of metal being stripped from the rails inside them, which means they degrade very quickly and the rails have to be replaced constantly. We all know the potential of drones, but the use of autonomous self directed weapons where the drones can pick their own targets is where they become scary. Autonomous weapons are already a reality in large defence turrets on ships, around army bases, and important buildings (like the Whitehouse). They can be set to radar directed target acquisition, which they need for defence against fast moving missiles. Machine gun turrets on the defences along the DMZ between North and South Korea also work like this. Even cruise missiles are somewhat autonomous in that they can find their own way to their targets. What we're really worried about though are things like predator drones or tracked bomb disposal robots coming after us with weapons like mounted machine guns, both are possible and have been tested. Satellites have limited weapon capability, none have enough power onboard to carry useful energy weapons, while mass drivers and traditional projectile weapons introduce the problem of recoil which is extremely hard to cope with for a satellite in orbit. They can carry missiles like nuclear weapons be they're extremely vulnerable to attack for such an expensive weapon. successful experiments have been made using traditional guns against other satellites but they're very messy and dangerous to everything in orbit. A stupid idea that was proposed were the “rods of god”: giant tungsten poles which the satellite could drop as destructive gravity driven bombs, The trouble is that would be super expensive to get into space, the accuracy is extremely bad and the energy needed to aim them would be too costly. It would only be useful as a “sword of Damocles” if you had them always hanging over specific targets, but even then they'd be very easy to disable. We came up with our own future weapons. Mine was a marshmallow gun that would spray masses of harmless sugary marshmallow fluff all over your enemies, then use a microwave emitter to massively expand the marshmallow and heat it to debilitating levels. This would envelop people in masses of injurious, burning gooey muck, which would then harden on them and any surface it touched. It would also be terrible for the insides of electronics and machinery. I could talk about a LOT more but let's leave it for now. Listen to the cast! An enormous array of health and performance problems can be distilled into one word - disconnection. Mental health distress is usually a disconnection from our purposes and community. A disease like cancer has been described as a malady of separation. Diabetes is a disconnection from natural foods. And at a higher level, all of these are disconnections from the Earth. Which is why earthing or grounding is such a fascinating health philosophy, and one I explore in this episode with a true elder of the earthing movement, Clint Ober. For more than 20 years, Earthing pioneer Clint Ober has dedicated his life to improving the health of everyone on earth. Australia plans to halve polluting emissions from passenger vehicles by 2025. This ambitious goal can only be achieved by a noticeable increase in the number of electrically powered vehicles. The problem with this strategy is that car customers are reluctant to move away from the beloved petrol and diesel engines they've been familiar with for generations. Electrically powered cars, on the other hand, are considered expensive to buy and complicated to handle, as the charging infrastructure is supposedly inadequate. But are these objections really true? A couple from the Blue Mountains report on experiences with the new e-car.

BLOOM RECORDS PODCAST

Presenting their third release of the year, roku welcomes Blanka Barbara to the label for her debut EP. Born in Poland but now based in London, Blanka Barbara first emerged in 2020 with a series of releases via her Rabbit Records imprint. Quickly catching the attention of the progressive house and melodic techno communities, the next two years would see the classically trained pianist and composer go on to record projects for Lane 8's This Never Happened, Ziger's Eat My Hat Music, John OO Fleming's Joof Aura, Mango Alley and Proton's Particles. With 2023 projects for Juicebox Music and Balkan Connection already in the books, Blanka now adds roku to her resume with ‘Ever Closer', alongside remixes from Danny Lloyd and Bondarev. Destined to be a highlight in Blanka's discography, it is the melodic stylings of ‘Ever Closer' which get the release underway. Electrically charged from the outset, its rolling rhythmic structures, striking percussion and character rich groove set the piece on a course for aural enlightenment. Dark bass stabs and haunting overlays cleverly coax across the first act, elevating momentum and mood for a finale of colourful arps and hopeful sonics. The companion piece ‘Descending Into Heaven' finds Blanka showcasing a deeper, more emotive side of her repertoire. The London resident masterfully marries blissful sonics and balmy effects over a framework of warm fluid grooves and precise percussive arrangements. Sitting at the heart of the piece is a reflective interlude, one where hopeful melodies unite in a whirlpool of textural euphoria, perfectly suited for those magical morning moments on the dancefloor. Making his label debut with the lone interpretation of ‘Ever Closer' is Danny Lloyd. With a career that spans the better part of two decades, Italian artist Danny Lloyd has etched his own unique place in progressive music history. Long a favourite of Hernan Cattaneo, the Tuscany resident has taken his smooth effortless sound to long standing imprints Asymmetric Recordings, MNL, Movement, Proton Music and more. Known for being choosy in his projects, Danny's first production of 2023 finds the Italian artist making his roku debut with a hypnotic rendition of ‘Ever Closer'. Opting for a timeless approach, the Italian artist creates a distinctive interpretation in his inimitable style; with arpeggiated fragments and airy sonics uniting over a bed of thumping beats and pulsing basslines, casting a spell over the listener across a fluid first movement, before breaking out into a tastefully restrained and deeply meditative finale. The release concludes with Bondarev making his label debut with the lone interpretation of ‘Descending Into Heaven'. Russian artist Bondarev has been a DJ for the better part of two decades, sharing the stage with some of progressive music's most iconic names, while operating as the booking manager for Saint Petersburg's famed WARPP Club. As a producer, Bondarev first emerged in 2017 with a release via Crossings, a project which would lead to key discography credits courtesy of aboriginal, Mango Alley, Proton's Particles and most recently via WARPP's label, where he operates as the A&R. Now, presenting his first remix of 2023, Bondarev debuts on roku with a powerful take on ‘Descending Into Heaven'. Buoyant and energetic across the first movement, Bondarev continues his stylized ways with rippling grooves, flashing percussion and dark stabs creating a prophetic path into the main break. Sitting comfortably in an emotive yet thought provoking space; childlike motifs and sweeping harmonies converge, rising out of calming atmospheres as the interlude evolves, eventually giving way to a thunderous drop and energetic final movement. Episode 49 is a conversation with Adrian Helwig, Analog Field Application Engineer, and Michael Seidl, Systems Engineer from Texas Instruments, about the trends in space electronics.Texas Instruments is a global semiconductor manufacturing company with expertise in analog and embedded processing chips. The company was founded in 1930 and headquartered in Dallas, Texas. In this episode, we discuss: While power is a very precious good in space satellite applications continue to become even more power-hungry in the future: More intelligence/processing power for telecom and data routing applications AI for pre-processing on-board on optical and radar imaging payload to reduce data rates even though resolution goes up   Electrically steered antennas replace classic mechanical antenna pointing system, RF to bits (RF sampling) Small satellites autonomous maneuvering for debris avoidance, etc. Designers must increase total power capabilities / power density and bring efficiency up. Efficiency is very important as any improvement will bring a double benefit: power that is no longer wasted does not have to be produced anymore. Reduced power losses save efforts in cooling. With higher efficiency, there is also greater power density possible. TI's products enable such higher power density to also enable savings in the board area. The high quality of the voltage rails is increasingly challenging to meet: e.g. Only 0.8V core voltages with tens of Amperes but +/-3% tolerance leaves only mV intolerance; Power distribution network requires a high amount of capacitance which adds cost and board area. highly precise instruments and very high-throughput communication systems require super-low noise levels on the supply voltage.  The power tree is fundamentally important for the overall robustness and availability of the satellite. TI provides a high level of radiation hardness (especially against heavy ion impacts which are challenging for power devices) combined with several protection solutions – integrated into the actual power devices but also as discrete functions to complement the actual power supply solution. Tight control of the voltage rails is very important to assure the reliability of the system. For e.g. a 10% transient applied to a downstream device can easily damage it or degrade its longevity. With -SEP and QMLP/QMLV the right level of cost & rad hardness. ECM expert Chris Mohalley joins the podcast to talk about the balance between selecting air filtration and motor performance, also known as "MERV vs. Motors." As the industry realizes that filtration is more important, we're starting to see an interest in filters with MERV ratings of 13 or higher. However, there are some design challenges associated with static pressure drops across filters, motor responses to static pressure, and airflow. If the airflow isn't set properly, that could affect the refrigerant charge and temperature rise. PSC motors' performance directly follows the load; as static pressure increases, the airflow rate produced by the motor decreases. They may also make loud noises when the static pressure is high but satisfactory airflow. However, they are robust and don't typically fail quickly due to high static pressure. Electrically commutated motors (ECMs) are operated by electronic controls and come in constant torque or constant airflow varieties. The former has a performance curve (like a PSC motor) but doesn't appear to suffer from longevity issues when the static pressure is high; the latter can adjust airflow based on static pressure, but it is likely to have issues maintaining airflow during high static pressure conditions. Regardless, there is still an operational envelope; going outside of that envelope will likely result in a capacity and/or efficiency hit if there is high static pressure. Chris and Bryan also discuss: COVID-19 pandemic and the evolution of filtration Face velocity across filters Amps in constant torque vs constant airflow motors Swings in airflow/performance Educating the customer about "upgrading" filters Using performance manuals   Learn more about Regal Rexnord's training at https://regal.mmu.com. A viral video on Twitter over the weekend showed two men demonstrating "electrically-charged rocks" sparking when rubbed together. The video was initially posted by the Twitter handle 'Africa Archives'. Abstract: Electrical synapses supported by gap junctions, are known to form networks of electrically coupled neurons in many regions of the mammalian brain, where they play relevant functional roles. Yet, how electrical coupling support sophisticated network operations, and the contribution of the intrinsic electrophysiological properties of neurons to these operations, remains incompletely understood. Here, comparative analysis of electrically coupled mesencephalic trigeminal (MesV) neurons, uncovered remarkable difference in the operation of these networks in highly related species. While spiking of MesV neurons might support the recruitment of coupled cells in rats, this rarely occurs in mice. Using whole-cell recordings, we determined that the higher efficacy in postsynaptic recruitment in rat's MesV neurons does not result from coupling strength of larger magnitude, but instead from the higher excitability of coupled neurons. Consistently, MesV neurons from rats present a lower threshold current for activation, more hyperpolarized firing level as well as a higher ability to generate repetitive discharges, in comparison to their counterparts from mice. This difference in neuronal excitability results from a significantly higher magnitude of the D-type K+ current (ID) in MesV neurons from mice, indicating that the expression level of this current gates the recruitment of postsynaptic coupled neurons. Since MesV neurons are primary afferents critically involved in the organization of orofacial behaviors, such mechanism might support lateral excitation, by which activation of single neurons at the periphery can spread to coupled partners. Thus, by amplifying sensory inputs, lateral excitation may significantly contribute to information processing and organization of motor outputs. Copy rights belong to original authors. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Solar Blackout Resistance, published by jefftk on September 8, 2022 on LessWrong. Many houses have solar panels, but in a power outage almost all of them shut down. Especially with serious blackouts like Texas had or like Europe may have this winter, getting even minimal power during an outage is valuable. Designing residential grid-tied rooftop solar so that it only worked when the grid is up was a serious mistake that squandered what could have been a major benefit of putting panels on roofs. Let's fix this! When the grid goes down it's important that solar panels don't keep sending out power, which could shock utility workers fixing things. Having inverters shut themselves off is the easiest way to ensure that never happens, but it's not the only way: the inverter could disconnect from the grid while providing power just to the house. This would only work when the sun was shining, of course, and only when there was enough sunlight on the panels for what you were trying to run. A large system in a sunny area could be set up to try to power the whole house, while a less productive system might be set up to power a few priority circuits or even just a single outlet. Making systems work this way by default would have major advantages in a range of disasters. You would immediately have widespread distributed generation, and so many things rely on electricity: Communications. Really important for people to coordinate. Even just a small amount of power for recharging phones would go a long way. Medical devices. Many people rely on ventilators, powered wheelchairs, etc, and these generally only have a few hours of battery if the grid goes down. Refrigeration. Keeping food (and medicine) from spoiling. Heating. Even gas and oil heat need electricity for blowers, pumps, etc. and generally will not function at all when the power is out. Cooling. Fans, AC, etc. Combines especially well with solar, since cooling need is highest when available solar is highest. Pumps, tools, etc. Even more important during disasters. Looking ahead to likely winter power outages in Europe, and potential outages here if things get worse [1] it would be far better if these millions of rooftop solar installs were able to operate independently. You can install systems with batteries, which would be more robust than relying on however much power the sun happens to be producing at the moment, but large batteries are expensive and I'm not aware of anyone selling systems like this with small batteries. What if we used no battery? Electrically, this is pretty practical. When we got solar I thought about this a lot and we installed an SMA Sunny Boy with a "Secure Power Supply" (SPS) in the basement. It didn't end up costing much more: something like $250. Unfortunately these aren't allowed anymore for residential rooftop solar. Starting with the 2014 National Electrical Code (NEC) you need to have some form of rapid shutdown to protect firefighters in an emergency, and in the 2017 revision it got much stricter to where the SPS functionality would have to be completely redesigned to qualify. The only option now, as far as I can tell, is the recently released Enphase IQ8 Sunlight Backup. It's very expensive: I got some quotes and it added about $7k (23%). I think it's likely that this rule change didn't consider the resiliency downsides of prohibiting the current versions of these systems, and it would have been better to make the change over a longer period with more notice to manufacturers. For example, it took until December 2021 for the first NEC 2017 compliant backup system, the IQ-8 to come out, 5 years from code publication. One way to get most of the benefits of the code change without this particular harm would have been to offer a temporary exception for island-capable solar. My understanding is t...

There seems to be a serious issue with their infrastructure and their grid to support major weather conditions. We discuss how  ERCOT (Energy Reliability Commission of Texas) had recently published an announcement asking for people to voluntarily conserve electricity. And they said it might be because they're running out of electricity. Find out what they were asking people to do and did they ask Commercial business to do this?  We talk this and more!  Take a listen.

Get in touch. The Neutral Sigma BaryonsIntroductionWeighing in at 1192 MeV, the middle-weight sigma baryon is also the the electrically neutral one.The Sigma Baryons are a trio of strange, slightly heavy cousins to everyday particles like the proton and the neutron. We've already talked at length about the charged Sigma baryons. Today, we're focusing on their electrically neutral sibling, Sigma Zero. While the decay resistant charged sigma baryons - with their unusually long lifetimes -  certainly qualify as “strange” particles, the sigma zero feels far less strange. At least at first. The Sigma Zero decays rapidly. Tens of trillions of times faster than its charged siblings Sigma Plus or Minus. If you're into really small numbers, or just to measure time in seconds, that's a decimal point followed by 19 zeroes before you get 7 and then a four. 0.000000000000000000074 secondsThat's too short a time for us to fathom, but its about right for an unstable particle that heavy.Remember, it is STRANGE that the typical lifetime for strange baryons like Lambda Zero or the Charged Sigmas can be measured in nanoseconds. So why does the sigma zero baryon decay so quickly? OR why do we even consider it to be in the “Strange” family?DecaysOne reason to consider sigma zero “strange” is because it decays to a strange particle. Specifically, it decays, 100 percent of the time, to a lambda zero.In the process, the sigma zero throws out a photon - that is, a gamma ray - which itself might be hard to explain. You see, photons carry the electromagnetic force. Photons are passed around like baseballs between particles that have an electric charge. Photons can be thought of as building blocks for electric and magnetic fields. SO what business does the uncharged Sigma Zero - or Lambda Zero for that matter - have interacting with a photon?Electrically neutral pions, you might recall, decayed into a PAIR of photons. So perhaps it's not weird. But pi zero decays were something of an anomaly. Literally. You might recall that pi zeros decayed to two photons because of the chiral anomaly. It involved these wild, quantum mechanical beasts known as instantons. Very nonlinear, very intricate, unusual stuff. In some sense, the neutral pion just vaporized into the electromagnetic field. This is decidedly NOT what happens with Sigma zero. It doesn't vaporize. It just decays like any other particle. So what gives? To understand HOW an electrically neutral particle could spit out a photon, we have to look inside the baryon to that subnuclear goo of quarks and gluons.InnardsThe Sigma baryons are all bona fide strange particles, they all have a strange quark. Sigma Plus had two up quarks and a strange quark. Sigma minus shad two down quarks and a strange quark. Can you guess what a Sigma Zero has?One of each. Up, down and strange. But wait. Wasn't the Lambda Zero ALSO made up from an up quark, a down quark and a strange quark? Well yes. And that fact explains in fact, why the sigma zero decays so quickly. It decays to the lambda zero because they both share the same number and kind of internal or valance quarks. As it turns out, the Sigma Zero is something of an “Excited” version of the Lambda zero. Internally, you might say that the up and down quarks are buzzing around in a slightly different configuration. A configuration with slightly more energy. They're a little more spun up, as it were. That bit of spin energy gets released by the emission of a photon, leaving that bag of quarks and gluons with lower internal energy, otherwise known as the particle Lambda Zero.E = mc^2 after all just means that the MASS is proportional to ENERGY.Including PhotonsThe internal structure of the Sigma Zero also explains why an electrically neutral particle can throw out a photon. It's just electrically neutral on AVERAGE. The average value of the electric charges of all the quarks is zero. But individually, they each have a charge. This brings us back to the story of the neutron. While the AVERAGE electric charge of a neutral baryon is zero, the electromagnetic field need not be identically zero.Like the neutron or the earth, the Sigma Zero baryon has a nonzero magnetic dipole moment. It probably should also has an electric dipole moment. All this means is that the electromagnetic fields kind of averages out to zero, but are still smeared out, in a way.And it's these smeared out configurations that allow the Sigma Zero to throw out a photon and decay to a lambda zero. Or at least, that's another fun way to think about it.

Our guest this episode has a highly unusual medical background.  Dr. Misak first began his medical studies in pharmacy, earning a degree in Pharmacy from West Virginia University. He is still a Registered Pharmacist today.  But “Doc Misak'' wasn't satisfied with pharmacy only. He has always been fascinated by how things work. Going back to childhood, Misak was always tinkering with things to see how they operated. Misak liked taking things apart - like his bike - and putting them back together to learn how something “functions.” His obsession with functionality is why he ended up becoming a Functional Doctor. When Misak looks back at his career, he says “it made perfect sense” for him to go from Pharmacist to Functional Medicine. Because Dr. Misak isn’t one to “stay in a box.” One day he discovered by accident that functional medicine was about studying the root causes of disease and going deeper into how different bodywork areas work together. He got hooked. Misak quickly flew out to Oregon to attend one of the nation’s top functional medical schools.  While in school, Dr. Misak also studied compounding pharmacy - which is preparing custom formulated medications for the unique needs of individual patients.  Dr. Misak will blow your mind in this episode - from his 5 phase approach to functional health - to his jaw-dropping discoveries in anti-aging, telomeres, and groundbreaking developments in quantum bio-electrical energy and health - get ready for this exciting conversation!  Most pharmacists ``stay in their lane,” never breaking out of that trained paradigm. Misak’s combined expertise in functional medicine is why you will want to tune in. Our host Wade Lightheart declares this to be one of the BEST Awesome Health podcasts EVER at the end of the show.  In this podcast, we cover: Dr. Misak’s remarkable personal journey to becoming a highly sought-after functional doctor The emerging quantum energy component to healing A fantastic tool called a “multiple wave oscillator” Dr. Misak’s 5 phase approach to health How to modulate and measure your “vital force” and energy efficiency for a longer life Why you need to frequently test your urine and saliva using ph strips and a refractometer What are “telomeres,'' and how are they the doorway to longevity? Dr. Misak’s supplement recommendations What Dr. Misak thinks about the current COVID-19 vaccine “We are electrical.”  At one point during the interview, Dr. Misak said: “Even naturopathic doctors today are taught to use drugs as first-line therapy to control people before they broaden out. I kept finding, wait a minute, I do not see the cures that you talk about in nature here. I can get these cancer patients to feel better, but I’m not breaking through with the cures.  That led me down a giant rabbit hole where I learned about Dr. Carey Reams and the Reams biological theory of ionization. Instead of taking apart an atom, he’s like - how do you put things together. And he learned that we are electrical. Einstein said in his theory of relativity that everything’s relative. That energy is the same as matter. So you are heat and electricity. Tesla, you know, if you want to understand the secrets of the universe, think of frequency and vibration.  But nobody teaches health on the level of quantum energy.”  Now, Dr. Misak IS teaching health from a quantum energy perspective. Let’s “run your numbers” to get to the root causes of your health issues. As a functional doctor, Misak does complete and thorough testing on his patients. He collects the data on pretty much everything - from blood work to food allergies and more.  Dr. Misak talks about bioelectric energy’s impact on our body chemistry. When numbers are up or down, these provide tons of helpful information for someone trained like Dr. Misak.  One thing he says in this interview: “I can have people come in, run their numbers, and I don’t even look at why they came in to see me, because I can tell them everything that’s going on with them by looking at their numbers because each variable that’s away from normal has a symptom pattern presented with it.  So chemistry is what makes up everything, right? You have positive charges, negative charges, cations, and anions. Electrically, they make up your atoms, which make up your molecules.  So if you understand what the chemistry is dictating everywhere down the line, you know what the ideal is. You start correcting the chemistry electrochemically, and then everything starts to fix down below. You begin seeing hormonal effects normalizing. You start seeing blood pressure improve. Then you start supporting the liver, pancreas, lungs, adrenals, thyroid, whatever it is - those things begin to fix themselves.  But the chemistry will tell you where the weaknesses are and what you need to begin supporting.”   Dr. Misak is a brilliant yet humble man who can present science in a digestible format for people who didn’t go to medical school. There is so much brilliance in this interview. These show notes do not do this episode justice. Escuchar audio

Why is there anything but cancer? If we are nothing but a collection of individual cells, and if individual cells are perfectly competent at fulfilling their own morphological, behavioral, and physiological needs, then how is it that multicellular organisms—and healthy, functioning ones at that—even exist? Michael Levin explores these questions and more, including: Is cancer a form of swarm intelligence, or the breakdown of it? Are cancer cells particularly “selfish,” as many scientists believe, or are they just as selfish as any other biological system? How does the regeneration of amphibian legs stop at just the right point, and what does this tell us about collective cell decision-making? In the absence of broken hardware (e.g. mutated proteins), how and why does cancer begin? Is there a common language amongst many different cell types in the body? Michael Levin is a Distinguished Professor, Principal Investigator of the Levin Lab, and Director of the Allen Discovery Center at Tufts University, where he investigates how biological and non-biological systems underlie decision-making processes. How does memory storage, decision-making capabilities, and coherent, system-level behaviors emerge from biological and artificial artifacts? According to Michael Levin, the answer lies in the cooperative behavior of individual cells—a type of swarm intelligence. Just like the individual ants in an ant colony behave collectively to reach a larger goal, so too do individual cells in the “colony” of an organism, like a human being. In order to repair and build a human body, individual cells must be connected to and behave in accordance with the collective, rather than operate at the individual level.  But it goes so much deeper than that. Consider, for instance, the regeneration of a salamander limb. Following amputation, a normal limb indistinguishable from the original is developed over the course of a few weeks. How does this regeneration stop precisely where it should? Why doesn't the salamander end up with a limb that never stops getting longer? Levin says that the stopping point of regeneration requires that the cellular collective compare the current anatomy of the organism to the layout of a correct salamander forelimb, and stop when the error rate is zero (or close to). In other words, the cellular collective can ascertain whether and when the anatomy is correct, and cease growth when appropriate.  Mechanisms of cellular communication are many, and it is this communication—this connectedness between individual cells—that allows for a cellular collective to have goal-directedness, which in turn, leads to salamanders with perfectly regenerated limbs (as just one of many examples). Levin and his group are investigating what happens when an individual cell is unable to perceive the communication signals that normally keep it tightly harnessed to the greater system, like an entire human body. The ‘self' of the cell shrinks from the level of an organ or organism to the level of a single cell, deaf to the sounds of its neighbors. In this place, the isolated cell does what it knows: proliferates as much as it can and exploits the resources as much as possible. …And what do you get? Metastatic cancer. Levin believes that when a cell loses its ability to communicate electrically with its neighbors, it converts to this state where its behavior leads to metastatic cancer. This is supported by the fact that when ion channel drugs are used to temporarily block cells from proper electrical connection to their neighbors, they convert to metastatic melanoma, even in the absence of mutation and carcinogens. This understanding could one day lead to a commercial application that serves as an effective anti-cancer therapy. Levin discusses the details of all this and so much more. Wiping $3 billion off its market value, Hyundai's stock slid 6.2%. Shares in its affiliate Kia Corp, which had been tipped in local media reports as the likely operational partner for Apple, tumbled 15% — a $5.5 billion hit." according ot Autoblog: "The announcement brings the curtain down on weeks of internal divisions at Hyundai Motor Co Group — parent to both automakers — about the potential partnership with Apple, with some executives raising concerns about becoming a contract manufacturer for the U.S. tech giant in an arrangement reminiscent of electronics firm Foxconn's role in making iPhones."   https://www.autoblog.com/2021/02/08/apple-car-hyundai-kia-collaboration-now-dead/   2020 SAW 10% PLUG-IN SHARE FOR EUROPE More data on 2020, this time from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. Electrically-chargeable vehicles saw a similar surge in demand last year, accounting for 10.5% of all new car registrations in the European Union, compared to a 3.0% market share the year before. During the fourth quarter, registrations of electrically-chargeable vehicles (ECV) in the EU jumped from 130,992 units in 2019 to almost half a million (+262.8%), surpassing hybrid electric cars in sales volume for the first time. This strong increase in demand for battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) – with registrations growing by 216.9% and 331.0% respectively – was largely driven by government stimuli for low and zero-emission vehicles. Indeed, some of the biggest gains were seen in countries with the most generous incentives. In Germany, for example, BEV registrations increased by over 500% in the last quarter of 2020.   https://www.acea.be/press-releases/article/fuel-types-of-new-cars-electric-10.5-hybrid-11.9-petrol-47.5-market-share-f   CALIFORNIA: CUMULATIVE PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CAR SALES REACH 800,000 "The cumulative number of plug-ins sold in California increased to about 800,000 (of course the number is lower due to sales out of the state or accidents/totaledvehicles). For comparison, the total number in the U.S. is almost 1.8 million. EV drivers can use more than 70,000 charging points in California, which means one charging point per over 11 EVs." according to InsideEVs: "Compared to more than 3.1 million cars sold globally in 2020, it seems that the U.S. plug-in market is seriously lagging behind with just about a 10% share out of the global volume."   https://insideevs.com/news/486280/california-cumulative-plugin-car-sales/   CITROËN AMI NAMED ‘MICROCAR OF THE YEAR’ "Starting the year as it means to go on, Citroën’s highly innovative AMI has successfully scooped the ‘Microcar of the Year’ title in the GQ Car Awards 2021. The TSB [Technical Service Bulletin] follows up with instructions to inspect the terminals if bolts turn out to be missing, as the lack of contact may cause arcing burns on the joints or terminals. Missing bolts are not just limited to the Model 3, as bulletin SB-20-31-012 for the Model Y states that some cars may have missing or loose suspension bolts, which are meant to hold the steering knuckle to the upper control arm. Since this is a potential safety issue, Tesla issued a recall bulletin, which means that all affected vehicles have to be repaired. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.11.20.391813v1?rss=1 Authors: Joos, B., Morris, C. E. Abstract: Skeletal muscle fibers (SMFs) and neurons are low and high duty-cycle excitable cells constituting exceptionally large and extraordinarily small fractions of vertebrate bodies. The immense ClC-1-based chloride-permeability (PCl) of SMFs has thwarted understanding of their Pump-Leak/Donnan (P-L/D) ion homeostasis. After formally defining P-L/D set-points and feedbacks, we therefore devise a simple yet demonstrably realistic model for SMFs. Hyper-stimulated, it approximates rodent fibers' ouabain-sensitive ATP-consumption. Size-matched neuron-model/SMF-model comparisons reveal steady-states occupying two ends of an energetics/resilience P-L/D continuum. Excitable neurons' costly vulnerable process is Pump-Leak dominated. Electrically-reluctant SMFs' robust low-cost process is Donnan dominated: collaboratively, Donnan effectors and [big PCl] stabilize Vrest, while SMFs' exquisitely small PNa minimizes ATP-consumption, thus maximizing resilience. "Classic" excitable cell homeostasis ([small PCl][big INaleak]), de rigueur for electrically-agile neurons, is untenable for vertebrates' (including humans') major tissue. Vertebrate bodies evolved thanks to syncytially-efficient SMFs using a Donnan dominated ([big PCl][small INaleak]) ion homeostatic strategy. Copy rights belong to original authors. EYE on NPI - ACS37002 electrically isolated current sensors

This week's EYE on NPI takes a hint from the advice we're all getting to keep physically isolated - the ACS37002 current sensor (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/allegro-microsystems/acs37002-current-sensor) is a physically isolated sensor that takes advantage of the Hall effect to accurately measure power draw with full electrical isolation. Let's take a look! The ACS37002 is a 400kHz fully integrated Hall-Effect current sensor with very high accuracy, making it ideal for use in control loops of the most demanding power conversion applications. Current flows through the internal conductor coupling the magnetic field generated to the Hall sensor IC. As a result of no physical connection between the current and the IC, high voltage isolation is achieved. The current is sensed differentially by two Hall plates that subtract out interfering external common-mode magnetic fields. The sensor is factory-trimmed to provide high accuracy over the entire operating range without the need for customer programming. The sensor has an analog output and a reference output for signal integrity in noisy environments. A fast over-current fault output is included, having a user-configurable threshold via an analog input pin, providing short- circuit detection and enhanced system protection. The sensor also has four user-selectable gain options in the same device with two logic inputs without the need of extra components. This provides designers flexibility, and minimizes the overall bill-of-material for systems that need different current sensing ranges. At some point in an engineer's life, they have to measure the voltage, current or power of a circuit - for example, to make sure the circuit doesn't have a short or open, to verify that a battery is charging, or to adjust motor torque. Measuring current can be a little challenging - we can use low side sensing, where we stick a small resistance at the bottom of our circuit, and amplify the voltage difference from ground. (https://learn.adafruit.com/portable-solar-charging-tracker/analog-stuff) That makes a ground differential, which is often undesirable. Or you can have high side sensing, where you measure the difference between the highest voltage and a resistor drop. Sometimes this is challenging because the device you're measuring is much higher voltage than the circuitry doing the measurements, and the high common-mode makes that difficult. Or maybe you're measuring AC or high voltages and you want to keep your circuit isolated for safety! These Allegro current sensors are really nifty in that they are electrically isolated - there's no op amp connected to the sense resistor. How does this work? Instead of multiplying a voltage drop, we instead measure the magnetic field emitted by the current passing through the sense resistor. A hall effect sensor can measure the amount of field and then back-calculate the current passing by. This allow for very high voltage isolation. In the ACS37002 case, it's rated for 4.8kV isolation. Hall effect sensors are also very fast/responsive, so they can measure AC currents very easily, without introducing inductance like a current transformer would. The ACS712 (https://www.digikey.com/products/en/sensors-transducers/current-sensors/525?k=ACS712) is a famous chip from Allegro that was released a few years ago and is very popular for robotics, home automation and other high current measurement applications (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/allegro-microsystems/current-sensor-ics). This new sensor improves on the ACS712 - there's a 3.3V version of the ACS37002, the internal resistance is lower, the non-linearity is half as much, there's an adjustable range pinstrap and the current range is much higher - up to 66A! There's also a lot more configuration options, with gain ranging from 200 mV/A to 33 mV/A. This chip would make a great upgrade when you want better performance and comes in an easy-to-use SOIC 16 package. Want to upgrade your robot, scooter, or solar panel? You can order an ACS73002 today and have it in your hand tomorrow, pick a couple up today from Digi-Key stock by visiting https://www.digikey.com/short/zrb8p4 Also check out this Allegro video https://youtu.be/7XIXOHnmOSo?t=65 from 1:05 to 2:25 #EYEonNPI #DigiKey @DigiKey

Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Thursday 26th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   Firstly, Sergio Marchionne has passed away following complications after shoulder surgery. The 66 year old had been admitted to Zurich University Hospital for a routine procedure but passed away on Wednesday morning. The tribute from EVO: “Marchionne joined Fiat in 2003 when the ailing Italian carmaker was on the verge of bankruptcy after posting a loss of €6 billion. Within two years he had turned the loss into a profit.  In 2009 he orchestrated the deal to take control of the Chrysler, saving it from bankruptcy and giving Fiat and Alfa Romeo a foothold in the United States”. All our thoughts are with his family and friends.   VARIETY OF KONA REVIEWS OFFER POSITIVE VERDICTS Occasionally you see a handful of publications all release a review of a car at the same time, often literally at midnight, as the press office embargo they agreed to adhere to in order to obtain the review is lifted. And so it was today with the Hyundai Kona EV, although in fairness I knew this one was coming, because the awesome Bjorn Nyland (who i love for his haphazard but incredibly in depth reviews) made a video saying it was coming. Bjorn posted almost two hours of video today on his YouTube channel. I do wish sometimes he's make a hot take edit, for those in a hurry, but please do have a look. Bjorn's channel is excellent for both its content and frequency of videos he's producing now. So after the reviews I'll talk about how to buy one, and some of the confusion we've had recently, with the online sales vs dealer sales. Plus an email from a listener to this show from someone who has one on order.   Pocket-Lint: "The everyman's EV is a near-perfect crossover. The Kona looks like a future vehicle, just different enough from its petrol/diesel Kona cousins thanks to that closed front grille. It's comfortable too, with cushy seats that are both heated and cooled up front, ensuring temperature matching whatever the weather is outside. Electrically adjustable seats are a wink and a nod to this all-electric car's image, not to mention a feature usually reserved for premium options packs. There's adaptive cruise control with auto-braking, there's lane keep assist, blind spot warning, a reversing camera, and high beam assist. As the car can fully stop without using the brake pedal (the left paddle can be used as the fourth level, to control the brake, if you want), it's like a one pedal driving experience.   Tom Ford for TopGear: "I drove this car for 200+ miles and it still said it had 125 miles left in it. Probably because we were in EV-charming conditions in Norway, but more likely because this car is tested against the newer Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) - calculated on real driving data. With the current virus-quality proliferation of charge points across the UK, this is starting to be one of those tipping point moments when excuses to dismiss the BEV get thin on the ground. Yes, there will inevitably be some getting used to be done, and horror stories about charge points being unavailable, but in reality this is a relatively cheap, eminently useable EV. My usage pattern consists of regular 200-mile roundtrips to airports (where leaving it on a charge point for a week is probably rude), and this car wouldn’t need a top-up. Eco mode shuts down the aircon, mutes the throttle response and seriously increases potential range, Sport does the opposite. This top-spec long range gets a head-up display, 7-inch ‘supervision cluster’, 8-inch LCD nav and cameras, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a bigger Krell audio system, power/heat/cool leather front seats and a heated steering wheel, LED headlamps and smart regenerative braking"   And onto the subject of how to buy one. Now the company has updated its online design studio and Model 3 page with 2-4 months delivery windows for all versions of the vehicle" One of the comments from a User called 'Change' sums it up quite succinctly: "We know Tesla prioritise the delivery of their higher gross margin models so if they now despite of that cannot deliver them faster than the other versions of Model 3 I read this as evidence Tesla is selling a ton of the P3Ds which is good news with regard to Tesla getting profitable by Q3 or Q4. Also with 4 months as max delivery date and 20k production per month Tesla could have logged about 80,000 confirmed orders for Model 3."   https://electrek.co/2018/07/24/tesla-model-3-delay-delivery-windows-new-orders/   ROADSIDE TECHNICIANS AND EMERGENCY SERVICES 'NEED' EV EDUCATION "The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) says it is vital that training and accreditation is extended to those dealing with electric vehicles (EVs) at the roadside" according to Fleet News: "Recent reports of a Tesla Model X, which caught fire after it had been recovered by emergency services, underline the need for industry-led accreditations and qualifications for roadside technicians and emergency services personnel working on EV and hybrid vehicles, it said. The IMI’s recommendations to implement a ‘Licence to Practise’ for those working on electric and hybrid vehicles now form part of the Government’s ‘Road to Zero’ strategy. The IMI is urging roadside and emergency services to ensure their workforces are equally well prepared."     NOMADS NEW WIRELESS CHARGERS "Nomads Tesla Model 3 Wireless Charger is a wireless charging pad that’s been specifically designed to plug into the USB ports beneath the centre console on a Model 3. Foundations of Amateur Radio
Coax impedence, 50 Ohm and 75 Ohm, why is it so?

Foundations of Amateur Radio There is a recurring question that never seems to get a straight answer. Why are we using 50 Ohm impedance and not 75 Ohm? The more people you ask, the more answers you get. There'll be commentary about standing waves, SWR, loss, incompatibility, soldering, cost, velocity factor, diameter, susceptibility to noise and the list goes on and grows, the more people you ask, the longer the list. Of course as time goes by, people remember stories told to them, guess, or even, how to say this, make stuff up. To steal a phrase: "Why is it so?" In the 1930's, when most of us were not even the apple in the eye of their parents - let alone their grand parents - coaxial cable was being developed for kilowatt radio transmitters. There are two aspects to consider, the amount of loss against length and the ability of the coax to handle power. Without going into the maths, there's plenty of that online, the lowest loss for air-dielectric cable is 77 Ohms. If we look at the peak power handling, that occurs at 30 Ohms, that is, at 77 Ohms, coax is best at getting signal across the cable with the lowest amount of loss and at 30 Ohms, coax is best at dealing with high power. Clearly a compromise is needed. So, the mean between 77 Ohm and 30 Ohm is 53.5 Ohm and the geometric mean is 48 Ohm, so, 50 Ohm is a compromise between power handling and signal loss, for air dielectric. So, obviously, 75 Ohm is used for TV reception and not for transmission. Except it ain't so. In 1938, Roy Plunkett invented PTFE or Teflon. This material wasn't around when 50 Ohm was decided on. If you remember, coax consists of a few parts, the centre and the shield, each conductors that we use to move our signal around and something in between, the dielectric, which stops the two conductors touching, with a cover over the top of that for good measure to protect against shorting and damage. The dielectric can be an air gap, or some form of plastic like PTFE. Electrically, the dielectric constant for Air is 1, for foam PTFE it's 1.43 and for solid PTFE it's 2.2. Turns out that this makes quite the difference. Our lowest loss coax, is 77 Ohm for coax with an air dielectric, but drops to 64 Ohms with foam and 52 Ohm with solid PTFE. So, rather serendipitously, 50 Ohm was a grand choice, good power handling capability and low loss with a solid PTFE core. Now, why are we using 75 Ohm for TV? One suggestion is that it's another compromise between low loss and cable flexibility. What does all this mean for you? In a nut-shell, 75 Ohm coax is one type of compromise, 50 Ohm coax is another. You can use either, but they won't be the same and won't react the same. Calculations made for one, will not apply to the other and loss and power handling will be different. This means that your roll of cheap Quad Shield RG6 is perfectly fine for some aspects of our hobby and not for others. Here's an interesting tid-bit to tide you over until next we meet. If we compare RG58, common in Amateur Radio to RG6, common in TV, the losses are quite different. For 100m of coax, at different frequencies, these start to add up. At 1 MHz, the difference in loss is .6 of a dB, at 10 MHz, it's 2.2 dB and at 145 MHz, it's 10.7 dB. To be clear, the loss for RG6 is lower across the board. This really means that you shouldn't be afraid to experiment. There is nothing particularly special about the different types of coax and each choice has it's advantages and dis-advantages. Prevention is litterally referring to the ancient notion and truthfulness that our body is tubes and they need to Vent. It is a word that means Flow or to Pre-vent. In the 21st century if you want to avoid the critical Chronic conditions that can develop, and also becoming a Victim to the fight against Disease, we need to go back and embrace the Principles of Health. In ancient times people went to museums and libraries to learn the Nocis (to know), Pracsis (to do), Entelicis (to be) and actually lived by the 7 principles of health. To tell if something is 'Bad Science' you should look for 1 thing - when this Scientific Study was done was it bought and paid for by a company to bring a Product to market?  The Electrical Frequencies of fresh whole foods litterally pass the Ion Electric Force right into the cells and when were eating Synthetic, processed, artificial stuff over time and distance we are completely dishonouring the Electric Magnetic force in nature that the cells thrive on Check out Don's audio called 'Methuselah's Secret'  #1 Air (means in Latin spirit) is like Electricity, we don't know what it is,  life is Movement and if it's not, it's dying or dead.  Air is no different. Air has to move to be Electrically alive.  The greatest source of electricity is literally the air we Breath.  Ventilation and Circulating air will help you avoid 9 out of 10 Cold and Lung problems that occur in the winter months. #2 Water is highly Electrical, the way to electrify water is the way Nature does. Ancient cultures saw it and Replicated it in a very easy way.  Pour Water through the air and it electrifies it to 50 or less, this will bring your Cells alive with Electric Force.  What studies have shown is that we should be drinking daily about 1L for every 22kgs.  Water is critical.   Your body has the capacity to take clean water from whatever Source and do it's magic. The University of California published a 3 year investigative Study as they wanted to find out what kind of Stress was put on the Kidneys by drinking 400L of LA tap water and 1 can of soda pop. The 400L of tap water was less stressful on the kidneys that 1 can of soda pop. #3 Sunshine. What the science shows is that what causes Skin Cancer is when a person 1. Doesn't stay Hydrated with enough Water and 2. Doesn't have enough Fresh, in Season, locally Grown Fruits in the diet. Spending 20 - 30 mins daily in the Sun is one of the most Healthy principles that you can embrace in Preventing all kinds of things that are going on.  Research shows that Sunshine actually clears up and Remits over a dozen Cancers, some of the most deadly. #4 Walking. Studies have been done because of what it does for the Cerebral Spinal mass, as well as the entire Nervous System.  The Cross Patterning movement, just that movement, actually enlivens the entire nervous system and creates the Flux or the Nerve flow.  Also the Lymphatic System can only purify, move and clean the body if you walk.  If you walk (or stroll) for 45mins - 1 hour all kinds of incredible things are taking place at levels that we are not even Conscious of.  Walking is how you Strengthen the fabric of your Emotions. #5 Whole foods.  The Plant kingdom.  Their's all kinds of collective evidence over the entire course of the Human Experience that shows a Plant based Diet seems to have an effect on the Temprement of the human experience which is good, kind and leads to a Disease free Culture and Society and adds to a person's Longevity.  "An apple a day keeps the doctor away" is actually a truest truth.  The smartest thing people can do is eat Locally and support the local Growers, fresh is what is Critical, more so than Organic.  It's the Electro Chemical frequency of the volatile Fluids of fresh that your cells identify with.  That's why you should eat locally.   #6 Non-toxic relationships are so critical, we must have loving relationships in our lives.  Their's studies that show that if you honestly believe that just 1 person loves you it builds the Neuro-immune response in ways that it doesn't build otherwise.  Also if you happen to love that same person back theres a Multiplying factor that comes into play.    #7Passion creates Longevity and studies have shown that whenever someone is Passionate about something, get's a kick out of it and it makes you happy to be involved in that activity, it keeps us going up to 18 years longer than if you don't have something you have really zeroed in on and been passionate about.  Reflect on your passion right in the moment.  This is the power of Memory and Passion.

Highly efficient single-photon sources (SPS) can increase the secure key rate of quantum key distribution (QKD) systems compared to conventional attenuated laser systems. Here we report on a free space QKD test using an electrically driven quantum dot single-photon source (QD SPS) that does not require a separate laser setup for optical pumping and thus allows for a simple and compact SPS QKD system. We describe its implementation in our 500 m free space QKD system in downtown Munich. Emulating a BB84 protocol operating at a repetition rate of 125 MHz, we could achieve sifted key rates of 5-17 kHz with error ratios of 6-9 and g((2))(0)-values of 0.39-0.76.
