Haz is invested in developing non-binary ways of making that refuse rigid performance structures; as explored in their three latest 45 minute works; Rising Damp: A Sporepunk unearthing of a queer utopia at La Mama HQ (2022), The (Sour Glitch) Two-Step Refusal at The Flying Nun by Brand X (2021) and 101101001: Dude Where's My Gender at The Giant Dwarf (2020). As a writer, Haz has received mentorship with ATYP as part of National Studio (2020) and Fresh Ink (2021). Haz's work relishes in the illegible and incoherent; centering play and pleasure. He uses performance to make sense of himself and non-sense of the rest. They have a distinct modus operandi of gusto, ego, and innuendo.  Sophie Strykowski (she/they) is a performance maker and actor from Gadigal, currently living on the unceded lands of the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung people. Their devised work reflects their positionality as a queer person, with the intention to dismantle and reimagine perceived truths with earnestness and delight. Sophie has worked across a range of independent and professional stages in Gadigal, including Griffin Theatre and ATYP in Intersection: Arrival (2019), Q Theatre in Originate (2020), Kings Cross Theatre [KXT] in Natives (2022) and Rogue Projects in Taz v. The Pleb (2023). Her work plays with form, combining elements of movement, comedy and experimental theater to ask big questions about the self, love, sexuality and connection. Sophie brings these questions to an audience with sparkling fearlessness and joyful curiosity. ------------------------------- Charaf Tartoussi joined Queering The Air as our third and final guest artist for the Melbourne Fringe Festival. Spoken word theater meets mourning ritual, it takes us on the grieving journeys of four artists as they grapple with what it means to lose a loved one back home.Meet Charaf, Parminder, Thabani and Farah. They all live in Naarm, all write poetry and all have had to grieve a family member from a homeland someplace else. Together, they embark on an honest voyage through a grief as ancestral as it is foreign. From longing and guilt, to curiosity and pride, they will venture into the breadth of emotion in their migrant and diasporic mourning.Aza is where they come together to be witnessed in the diversity in their grief. It is where they come together to heal, and to be healed. In 50 minutes of vulnerable and sincere storytelling, they will move through the motions of their loss and attempt to answer the question: how does grief change when it is experienced in the immigrant diaspora, and how does it stay the same?  Music:Rehab by RihannaMusic by MadonnaYAMA LAYALI by David Vendetta feat Haifa Wehbe National Coming Out Day Event by Queerspace - Drummond Street Services(All LGBTQIA+ People Are Welcome)100 Drummond Street, Carlton, Victoria 3053Wednesday 11 October4pm - 7pm

Episode 108: Anti-government protests sweep Iran, Thorburn saga is about more than money and the good news is no new extinctions in Australia

Van Badham and Ben Davison open by looking at the sweeping reforms of paid family and domestic violence leave and enshrining an employers responsibility to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace that the union movement in Australia has won and how women leaders make societies, and social movements, better (you can join at australianunions.org.au/wow).  Our hosts contrast this democratic advancement with the repressive regime in Iran and the violence that oppression of women in Iran has created. The killing of Mahsa Amini and the weeks of violent clashes, government suppression, mass arrests and murders has some suggesting that the Iranian people have had enough of the theocratic regime.  Van and Ben explore what's been happening, why it is happening and what might be next. In Australia, disgraced former NAB CEO Andrew Thorburn has resigned as CEO of Essendon football club after 30 hours in the job.  Van and Ben unpack how this multi-millionaire with powerful political connections, who was slammed by the banking royal commission, was engaged to review the club, managed to become CEO and when told he had to choose between his role as chairman of the "City on a hill church" or his paid employment at Essendon football club he chose to quit his job. Warning: The rich, white, male, privileged whining that Thorburn has since embarked on gets thoroughly dismantled and his time as NAB CEO critically examined.  The good news is that Tanya Plibersek has announced the Albanese government's plan to prevent species extinction in Australia! Van Badham and Ben Davison are relieved by the huge agenda of the Labor commonwealth government and do a deep dive on the National Press Club speech by ACTU Secretary Sally McManus.  Sally's speech explores how we came to the economic situation we are in, what we can do about it and why unions are naturally inclined to work with others to solve our shared problems.  Van and Ben discuss the historical context, the values that drive economic justice or inequality and just what might happen next for Australia.  You can join your union at australianunions.org.au/wow In Queensland the union movement has worked with the state Labor government to develop a ten year energy plan that includes a charter of worker's rights, moving to renewables and guarantees both jobs and lower carbon emissions!  Van and Ben discuss how environmental outcomes and social outcomes align. "We don't have policies, we are in Opposition, not in Government" Jane Hume Coalition Finance spokesperson on Insiders.  That simple statement, which the plethora of anti-union policies on the Liberal website suggests in not true, sums up a lack of care, interest or genuine commitment to improving Australia from the Dutton led Coalition. Ben explores the Insider's interview, the Coalition policies that do exist, how the federal anti-worker approach has seeped into the NSW and Victorian Liberals and how it is putting them on the road to electoral oblivion. Ben dives into the abolition of the cashless debit card, which mostly impacts communities in Western Australia, Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory and explores Labor's new programs for those impacted. There will be a federal ICAC introduced to parliament this week and Ben discusses how that process is playing out, why Albo has an obligation to consult with the opposition and why instead of independants attacking Labor for doing so they should adopt Katherine Murphy's view of aiming for an ICAC "Everyone in parliament can support". There has been a stigma attached to skin conditions for centuries. Those who have skin conditions have not only to cope with the effects of their diagnosis but also the reaction of others to their condition. In this week's podcast episode, we will be talking about not just one, but three different dry skin conditions that affect millions of people's lives. Stephanie Shepherd of Cyapsoriasis: Stephanie is living with psoriasis for 14 years now. She runs an Instagram and a YouTube channel which both raise psoriasis awareness, through sharing her story and other people's too. She strongly believes in natural healing, through diet and lifestyle changes, because that's when she had seen the best results for her skin. Farah Khaleck is a motivational speaker and scleroderma ambassador. Farah was just 17 years old when she began experiencing symptoms and early signs of scleroderma. Since then, she has braved her situation to advocate and voice herself as a strong and empowered woman. Farah sees scleroderma as another challenge and has managed to live with it to her advantage. Carly Findlay OAM is an award-winning writer, speaker and appearance activist living with Ichthyosis. She works part-time at Melbourne Fringe as their Access and Inclusion Coordinator. She writes on disability issues for publications including ABC, Daily Life and SBS . Carly has written her first book – a memoir called Say Hello, and is editing Growing Up Disabled in Australia. Today we are joined by Bella Green (@bellagreenery) . Bella is a stand-up comedian, writer and sex worker living in Melbourne, Australia. She got her start in comedy by telling jokes in brothels to anyone who'd listen. Now she tells jokes in some of the best comedy rooms in the country.  Her debut stand-up hour “Bella Green is Charging For It” answers all the questions you'd never thought to ask about the adult industry. It won Best Comedy at Adelaide Fringe 2020 and was nominated for Best Comedy at Melbourne Fringe 2018.  Bella was a guest on the Wilosophy podcast in 2020, with Wil Anderson describing her as “a brilliant stand-up comedian” and her memoir 'Happy Endings' was released by Pan Macmillan in 2021. We chat with Bella about her experience writing her memoir “Happy Endings”; how her SW and comedy work overlap; share her weirdest stories from her SW career; discuss how working in the s3x industry has changed her; share her journey with addiction and rehab; and a ton more!  After reading (or listening - shoutout to audible) Bella's memoir and absolutely loving it, it was such a pleasure to sit down with her and have the opportunity to ask all our lingering questions (What happened to the meth time guy? Has she p00ped on anyone since her dungeon disaster?). Trust us when we say, you are going to adore Bella's humour and candidness … so once you're done this episode go buy her book and thank us later!
