Keep the Raccoons Out: Service Mesh, MCP, and Securing Agentic Workloads With William Morgan, CEO of Buoyant and creator of Linkerd Linkerd just turned 10, so we brought on the person who built it and coined the term “service mesh” in the first place. William Morgan joins Jonathan and Justin to talk about where service mesh came from, where it’s going, and the very specific kind of chaos that agentic AI is about to unleash on anyone who owns a Kubernetes cluster. The short version: lock your doors, because the raccoons are coming. “Our job is basically to make Linkerd as boring as possible.” William traces Linkerd’s origins back to Twitter’s infrastructure work between 2010 and 2014, when a Ruby on Rails monolith turned into a sprawling distributed system — the same problems we have today, just a different decade. As the fifth project ever to join the CNCF, Linkerd has had a front-row seat to the ecosystem’s evolution, and William explains why his actual goal these days is to make it as boring as humanly possible: the kind of dependable infrastructure layer you can trust to still be around in another 90 years. That’s also why he’s not adding AI to Linkerd — an infrastructure layer has to be fast, lightweight, and predictable, and generative AI is the opposite of all three. “At some point your agentic workload is going to figure out how to delete the production database. And it’s going to try it.” The heart of the conversation is what the AI wave means for the platform teams who own the clusters. Developers just got an army of AI assistants, and that has real consequences for CI/CD, code quality, and blast radius. William digs into the boundary problem — agentic workloads are untrusted but need access to your most important systems — and why zero trust has suddenly stopped being optional now that the code hitting your database no longer clears peer review and a security committee. Along the way they get into cache-aware routing that can take a 13-second inference call down to one, the still-unsolved mess of agentic identity, and why we keep anthropomorphizing these tools and letting our guard down. “If you don’t use Linkerd, your data system will be overrun by raccoons.” Finally, they turn to MCP — building a catalog of MCP servers, detecting tool calls, and adding DLP-style protection in front of the services an agent never sees. But William’s real point is that MCP is something of a red herring for a much older problem: uncontrolled access to your APIs. Sultry low-end grooves from a rising house enchantress. "What kind of music do I actually want to play?" Every artist asks themselves this at some point in their career. What is a sound? And why do we personally identify with it? For Lea Lang, AKA dj sweet6teen, this question is the guiding force behind her RA Mix. Born in Aachen, a German spa city close to the border with Belgium, Lang found her musical feet in the vibrant student hub of Cologne. It was while studying social work at the Technische Hochschule that she fell into the nightlife scene. Finding her sound wasn't an instant process. Lang cut her teeth on breaks-heavy house and prog (think Angel D'Lite), traces of which you can hear peppered across RA.1004. But as she explains in this week's Q&A, the pandemic years were, musically, a turning point. "High BPMs and short-lived trends became very dominant and I realised I couldn't stand the pace anymore," she writes. "That's when my sound naturally shifted into something more minimalist and timeless." Nowadays, you'll find Lang in Berlin during the week, and on weekends… well, take your pick. A busy touring schedule means she's on the road almost constantly —this summer she's debuted at Horst Arts & Music, Butik, Dimensions and Panorama Bar (to name just a few). And her RA Mix? It oozes charm from the jump. Buoyant with gyrating low-end, it's hard to think her sound was ever anything else: vocals twirl around analogue basslines, material à la Eddie Richards and Terry Francis's historic Wiggle parties, as well as the kind of bongo action that wouldn't feel out of place in an Apollonia session. Zachari Logan carried a sketchbook as he travelled the world and responded to iconic artwork as well as art that once existed but is now lost, destroyed, or far away. Whimsical art and thoughtful poems that ponder the nature of existence. Zachari Logan is a queer Canadian settler poet and artist whose artwork has been exhibited throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Logan's work can be found in collections worldwide, including the National Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario, Remai Modern, Peabody Essex Museum, McMichael Canadian Art Collection and Nerman MOCA among many others. In 2014 Logan received the Lieutenant Governor's Emerging Artist Award, in 2015 he received the Alumni of Influence Award from the University of Saskatchewan and in 2016 Logan was long-listed for the Sobey Art Award. In 2010, his chapbook, A Eulogy for the Buoyant, was published by JackPine Press and in 2021, A Natural History of Unnatural Things, was published by Radiant Press. Logan's artwork and writing has been featured in many publications throughout the world. When the recession of 2008 hit, Susie lost it all. She calls it her “nuclear winter period,” a time of deep loss and seemingly endless change. But even when times were dark, Susie could bet on one thing: Herself. Despite a business and marriage in shambles, Susie knew she had what it takes to get through difficult times. Instead of succumbing to despair, she renovated a building and started a real estate business. On the outside looking in, it made no sense. Her friends and family questioned her sanity when she went into real estate during a housing crash, effectively placing her life savings in the hands of an uncertain economic market. But everything paid off when she succeeded. Her business took off, and everything came into alignment for her. Innovative thinking requires practice. When asked why she can weather such extreme periods of change without a hitch, Susie's answer might surprise you…she practices being uncertain, all the time. Before the recession hit, Susie was no stranger to taking calculated risks. She practices creative and innovative thinking every single day using the methods she lays out in her book: walking, meditating, making art, singing, and moving her body. By allowing her brain to become comfortable with uncertainty and creativity, she effectively trains herself to become a more innovative thinker. In her own words, “There is a physiological thing that happens in our brain when we are creating something.” You can do this too. If you find yourself becoming more inflexible and doubting your abilities, it's time to read her book – and become more creative yourself! It's time to design your life… Your life is not meant to be lived in a cubicle, doing the same things every single day, with no room for creativity. You are so much more than that, whether you know it or not. You create possibilities you would never have discovered by training your brain to think creatively.
