The Restump Podcast

We may be in transplant territory because there are too many pieces of our shattered purple hearts for another band-aid to hold it all together. Time to somehow Restump Podcast that depressing and demoralising Docker performance. In the context of when being in possession of supposed competent and talented lists, it was as incomprehensible a performance as we have ever delivered in our 30+ year history. There is no sugar coating it, spinning it or dismissing it, you simply can't imagine how it could get worse. In fact, you can't even take that ironic positive because, in the most unfathomable manner, we continue to find ways of lowering the bar.We take two steps forward; we take two steps back! What are we a team of Paula Abduls? Framing every second week as redemption round isn't sustainable or conducive to progress. There is something fundamentally wrong at the club that no one seems to be able to definitively put their finger on. But on the back of expectation and a specific strategic plan conveyed by the club, fans and members understandably are outraged and, reactionary or otherwise, have coach Justin Longmuir in the gun. Neesham, Drum, Connolly, Harvey and now Longmuir. We've been in the competition for 30 years and the cause of every crisis has apparently been the coach. How's that worked out for us?There is no doubt Justin Longmuir now finds himself under a level of pressure few could ever conceive but, after such a performance there shouldn't be anyone at the club not looking inward. However, while emotions run high, it would be remiss of everyone to not remember Damian Hardwick being under comparable pressure in 2016. After being in the top job at Tigerland for 7 years, the Tiges finished 13th with 8 wins and that came off the back of an elimination final loss the previous year. It had Richmond fans, members and the media calling for his head. The board responded by backing in their process and they double downed on Hardwick. We all know what happened over the next 4 years. Are the two situations comparable? Those who have made up their mind on JL will say no, and that is their prerogative. Whether we like to acknowledge it or not, us fans are victims of the overrating of our list at the time by the Fremantle administration. They were far too optimistic with their projections with such a young side, which remains the case. In 2022 we had an average age list of 24.1 years. Four years later we have an average age list of 24.5 years. However, despite the reality, it's an emotional game and many fans, irrational or otherwise, now don't contemplate reasoning other than the coach is entirely to blame. And that is understandable given the Fremantle football club put it all out there in 2022. We preach accountability, don't we? It will be interesting and very telling, how Simon Garlic handles this situation.Everything about footy is subjective. The validity of our opinions today is determined only by time.Does any of this ease the onset depression we're all suffering from Friday night? Probably not. No stranger to adversary, but the club is in a deeper hole than it usually finds itself in. The problem is the only way out is to climb a ladder! We don't know where we go from here, but if our venting and ranting provides some type of vicarious frustration outlet on the pod… you're welcome. Send us a textSupport the show

Four batsmen posted half centuries as New Zealand overhauled the West Indies' total of 301-8 to win the deciding one-day international by five wickets. The win was an historic one for the Black Caps, whose victory in Barbados on Monday lifted them to a 2-1 series win and makes this their first ODI series win in the Caribbean. Tom Latham scored 69 and put on 120 for the fourth wicket with Daryl Mitchell (63) in a stand which paced the run chase and carried New Zealand in sight of victory. Martin Guptill (57) and Devon Conway (56) had earlier combined to add 82 runs for the second wicket to give New Zealand a platform for a demanding chase. Mitchell was out with the total 248 in the 42nd over and Latham at 259 in the 44th, still with New Zealand requiring 43 runs. Jimmy Neesham settled the issue with a decisive innings of 34 from 11 deliveries, taking 18 runs from the 45th over bowled by Yannic Cariah. Neesham hit a six from the bowling of West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran to end the chase with 17 balls remaining. "It was obviously nice to make a contribution," Latham said. "I think the partnership that Daryl and I were able to make put them under pressure. We set a target of getting to that 40-over mark where we needed a run a ball." Latham appeared to have erred when he chose to bowl first and as the West Indies flourished in good batting conditions. Kyle Mayers made 105 in a 173-run opening partnership with Shai Hope, and Pooran smashed nine sixes in a rapid 91 for the West Indies. The pitch proved much better for batting than those on which the West Indies won the first match by five wickets and New Zealand won the second by 50 runs. The highest previous total in the series was New Zealand's 212 in the second match. Mayers and Hope stayed together for almost 35 overs to shape the West Indies innings. Their partnership ended when Hope was out for 51 and, as often happens with large partnerships, partner Mayers was out two balls later and without addition to the total. Brandon King fell soon afterwards with the total 181-3 in a sudden reversal for the West Indies. But Pooran picked up the pace again, posting a half-century from 33 balls. He had hit nine sixes and four fours from 55 balls when he was out in the 49th over. Mayers and Hope made a cautious start to the innings as they found the pace of the new pitch, crawling to 24 after 10 overs, negotiating a short rain break in the seventh over. "I took my time in the powerplay and it gave me the chance to get in. The last two games I got out in the powerplay," Mayers said in a television interview. "It's not every day you bat the powerplay for 20 runs but it worked out well in the end." - APSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Listen to the audio above as Black Caps bowler Lockie Ferguson joins Martin Devlin following last night's T20 win against the West Indies. Below, read Dylan Cleaver's analysis of the match.Twenty20 cricket is a game of shifting trends and strategies but it's comforting to know there is an old-fashioned "tactic" that remains the ultimate game changer: pace like fire.Tonight saw a prime example of that art as New Zealand won a game in which they spent the majority of the time shuttling effortlessly between trouble and calamity.Chasing 181 to win in a reduced 16 overs, New Zealand won with five wickets and four balls to spare, James Neesham starring with a 24-ball unbeaten 48.Even with that relatively comfortable margin, there was an element of how-the-heck-did-that-happen?After being inserted, the West Indies had taken advantage of greasy conditions and poorly calibrated bowling radars to streak away to 55-0 after three overs.Enter Lockie Ferguson. By the time he'd finished his third over the West Indies were 81-5 and he had 3-8 – and that tells only a fraction of the story.Ferguson was fast. The light rain seemed to make the drop-in wicket skid rather than hold up and the West Indies had no answer. He uprooted Andre Fletcher's stumps, nicked off Shimron Hetmyer for a duck and was a tad fortunate to have Nicholas Pooran leg before to a full toss.In between the Hetmyer and Pooran dismissals, captain Tim Southee returned to the crease and had Brandon King and Rovman Powell caught on the third man and fine leg boundaries respectively. Just like that, the guts of the order was gone and only skipper Kieron Pollard stood in the way of a rout (and not a bad bloke to stand in the way of anything, but more on that later).Even that doesn't really tell you the visceral effect Ferguson had on proceedings. Twenty20 is a batsman's game, right? Not when you're getting pinned on the chest by a guy running in and regularly hitting 150-plus clicks. The new season, the Spark Sport era, the Devon Conway era perhaps, got off to a faltering, frustrating start as squalls sent the players in three times during the first innings.Southee, the skipper, started and missed most of his targets before they were chased off after four legitimate deliveries. They were back after 20 minutes, but gone again after T20I debutant Kyle Jamieson's first over.It won't be one the tall right-armer will tell his grandchildren about, having leaked 18 runs including two sixes, but it was mild punishment compared to what was about to befall Hamish Bennett when they returned. His first ball was a single. The next was five wides when he was done no favours by wicketkeeper Tim Seifert. A four and a single followed before it all went haywire. Slipping in his delivery stride, Bennett ended up prone sideways across the pitch and the ball at extra cover.Confidence shaken, the next went into the upper deck of the West Stand – insult added to ignominy. A single followed before two no-balls, the second of which was also hit for four. The final ball also went to the boundary: 29 runs in 10 minutes of brutal theatre.Ferguson's intervention followed before Pollard and Fabian Allen combined for an 84-run partnership that combined common sense with the odd nonsensical Eden Park six.Ferguson returned to get Allen, then Keemo Paul for a duck with a truly terrifying delivery he gloved after initially looking to evade. At the other end stood Pollard. With his size and backlift, Eden Park can't contain his mishits let alone balls that find the middle. Plenty found the middle. The unfortunate Bennett was handed the last over; Pollard top-edged a six then snotted one into the next suburb. Bennett followed with a beamer, his second, and was removed. Neesham was given the task of completing the over, which he almost managed, though they were still looking for the penultimate delivery in Epsom as Pollard walked off with an unbeaten 75 off 37.What, are you NOT entertained?Ne...
