In this episode of the show, Binksy, Baldy, Jamie and Stu look back at week 1 of IPL 2025 through a stock market lens. Who are we buying? Who are we selling? And what are we watching with our fingers poised ready to pounce in the coming weeks? We start on a positive note, highlighting a balanced RCB side unbeaten at the time of recording thanks to a bowling attack featuring the quality of Josh Hazlewood and a top order that's firing thanks to Phil Salt, Virat Kohli, Rajit Patidar and co. In the Buy section of the show there's also praise for Sai Sudharsan, MS Dhoni and wicketkeepers in general. We're watching the impact player performances and how that's impacting games and batting lineups. We're selling a star-studded Mumbai Indians batting lineup featuring Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya and friends because we can't understand why they're continuing to struggle, and watching closely to see how much tinkering do with their teamsheet, tactics and batting lineup with the likes of Curran, Dhoni, Jadeja and Ashwin who could all slide up and down the middle order. To round out the show, there's chat about whether teams will score 300, how home ground advantage could play a role and if it is too early to be worried about Pat Cummins and his SRH bowling attack. Being able to change to meet one's circumstances is essential to survival. As HG Wells famously wrote: “adapt or perish.” In this week's episode, both of our storytellers find themselves in unfamiliar territory and need to change course. Part 1: As the only American, microbiologist Chris Robinson struggles to make friends with the other researchers in Chernobyl. Part 2: In his quest to study the adaptability of stickleback fish, neuroscientist Ashwin Bhandiwad keeps needing to adjust his experiment with each new hurdle. Chris Robinson is a published writer and PAm-Costco USA Scholar in the midst of his PhD at Indiana University. His research uses the honey bee as a model to study the ecology and evolution of the gut microbiome and how evolutionary adaptations, such as antibiotic resistance, are transmitted by mobile genetic elements. Originally from the Lowcountry of South Carolina, Chris has harvested watermelon with the USDA, spent a few years as a line cook in Charleston kitchens, and was formally a Fulbright Research Fellow in Ukraine. When not staring at a computer screen, Chris can be found deep into a bicycle ride, playing in the garden, or lamenting the failure of some baking experiment. Ashwin Bhandiwad has spent a remarkable amount of time trying to understand how the brain is organized. Once called "the most handsome boy in the world" by his mom, Ashwin is now a scientist at the Allen Institute for Brain Science working on developing tools to create maps of the brain. Ashwin received his PhD in Psychology from the University of Washington where he investigated how loud noise causes damage in the inner ear. Simultaneously, he disregarded that research by attending many loud concerts. Ashwin also loves swimming, starting projects that he'll never finish, and talking in silly voices to his young children. The Congress strongly criticized the introduction of the 'One Nation, One Election' bill, calling for its immediate withdrawal. Despite this, the bill was introduced after a vote in the Lok Sabha via an electronic voting system, with Speaker Om Birla overseeing the process.Modi Defends Amit Shah, Slams Congress Over Ambedkar RemarksPrime Minister Narendra Modi hit out at the Opposition's accusations that Union Minister Amit Shah insulted Dr. BR Ambedkar, claiming Congress's "rotten ecosystem" spread malicious lies to cover up its misdeeds. Modi said the Congress, led by a single dynasty, had humiliated Ambedkar's legacy and the SC/ST communities. His remarks, posted on X, accused Congress of trying to erase Ambedkar's contributions and criticized its tactics to hide its past failures.Kejriwal Announces ‘Sanjeevani Yojana' Ahead of Delhi ElectionsAam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal unveiled the 'Sanjeevani Yojana' on Wednesday, promising free medical care for all citizens over 60, in both government and private hospitals. The scheme is seen as a counter to the BJP-led Centre's Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), which provides secondary and tertiary healthcare to economically vulnerable families. Kejriwal aims to attract senior voters ahead of the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.CAG Report Finds Undue Benefits to Maharashtra Road ContractorsThe Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) revealed that Maharashtra road contractors received undue benefits worth Rs 203 crore due to reduced penalties imposed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). An audit found that NHAI violated concession agreements in projects in Nanded and Thane districts, which resulted in lower damage recoveries than stipulated. The CAG report, tabled in Lok Sabha on December 16, highlighted violations of Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) guidelines by NHAI.Ravichandran Ashwin Announces Retirement from International CricketRavichandran Ashwin, India's premier spinner, announced his retirement from international cricket after the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Brisbane. Both guests highlighted the critical gaps organizations face in these domains and shared practical insights on addressing them.Asaf Dori, a cybersecurity professional in healthcare and a researcher at the University of Sydney, underscored the need for governance-driven awareness to improve response and recovery capabilities. His research revealed that while organizations invest heavily in prevention and detection, they frequently neglect robust recovery plans. He emphasized the importance of comprehensive disaster recovery exercises over isolated system-based approaches. By linking governance to practical outcomes, Dori argued that organizations could better align their strategies with business resilience.Ashwin Pal, a partner at RSM with 26 years of experience in IT security, brought a field perspective, pointing out how recovery strategies often fail to meet business requirements. He discussed the disconnect between IT recovery metrics, such as RPOs and RTOs, and actual business needs. Pal noted that outdated assumptions about recovery timeframes and critical systems frequently result in misaligned priorities. He advocated for direct business engagement to establish recovery strategies that support operational continuity.A key theme was the role of effective governance in fostering collaboration between IT and business stakeholders. Both speakers agreed that engaging business leaders through tabletop exercises is an essential starting point. Simulating ransomware scenarios, for instance, often exposes gaps in recovery plans, such as inaccessible continuity documents during a crisis. Such exercises, they suggested, empower CISOs to secure executive buy-in for strategic improvements. The discussion also touched on the competitive advantages of robust cybersecurity practices. Dori noted that in some industries, such as energy, cybersecurity maturity is increasingly viewed as a differentiator in securing contracts. Pal echoed this, citing examples where certifications like ISO have become prerequisites in supply chain partnerships.By reframing cybersecurity as a business enabler rather than a cost center, organizations can align their response and recovery strategies with broader operational goals. This shift requires CISOs and risk officers to lead conversations that translate technical requirements into business outcomes, emphasizing trust, resilience, and customer retention. This dialogue provides actionable insights for leaders aiming to close the response and recovery gap and position cybersecurity as a strategic asset.____________________________This Episode's SponsorsThreatlocker: https://itspm.ag/threatlocker-r974____________________________ResourcesLearn more and catch more stories from Australian Cyber Conference 2024 coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/australian-cyber-conference-melbourne-2024-cybersecurity-event-coverage-in-australiaBe sure to share and subscribe!____________________________Catch all of our event coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/technology-cybersecurity-society-humanity-conference-and-event-coverageTo see and hear more Redefining CyberSecurity content on ITSPmagazine, visit: https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-cybersecurity-podcastTo see and hear more Redefining Society stories on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-society-podcastWant to tell your Brand Story Briefing as part of our event coverage?Learn More
