Former South African top-order batsman Gary Kirsten is one of the most respected voices in the modern game. After playing 101 Tests and 185 one-day internationals, Kirsten went on to a successful career as a coach. From 2008 to 2011 he coached India that included their win at the 2011 World Cup. Later in 2011 he was appointed coach of the South African team until August of 2013 and also had a brief stint with Pakistan in 2024, along with numerous coaching appointments in other formats including India's IPL. In this wide-ranging interview, Kirsten delves into some of the biggest issues facing the game: The threats facing the future of Test cricket, why the art of fast bowling is dying, the role of coaches at both school and international level and concerns over a proposed two-tier system in the global game.Note: We are aware of a small technical issue where some sections of the pod skip or "jump". Even as the IPL is nearing its business end, BCCI has sounded the bugle, inviting applications for the potential successor of Indian team head coach Rahul Dravid. This move comes as Rahul Dravid's tenure ends after the T20 World Cup in 2024. According to sources, India may hire a foreign head coach after nearly a decade. Notable triumphs under prior foreign coaches, such as John Wright and Gary Kirsten, make this option appealing. Wright led India to the 2003 ODI World Cup finals, and Kirsten oversaw India's victory in the 2011 ODI World Cup after a 28-year absence. The deadline for coach applications is May 27, paving the way for crucial decisions in Indian cricket. There have been reports that the board is considering former New Zealand captain and current CSK head coach Stephen Fleming as a potential successor to Dravid. However, given the BCCI's requirement that the new head coach be in charge of all three formats, it remains to be seen whether Fleming would apply for the position, which will need him to stay with the squad for 10 months per year. However, why can't India look at someone like Gautam Gambhir for the head coach role? Gambhir, known for his tactical and leadership abilities, could be a possibility. The former India opener, who played pivotal roles in the finals of the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup, assisting the team to victory on both occasions, served as the mentor of the Super Giants for two seasons in 2022-2023. Notably, LSG qualified for the IPL playoffs on both times and led KKR to the IPL 2024 playoffs. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah may have rejected the idea of having different coaches for different formats, but maybe in the next few years, the Indian team might need to look for different coaches for the red-ball and white-ball formats. Gary Kirsten (fondly known as Gazza) and I have been friends and colleagues in various capacities for over 30 years. Gazza played professional cricket for 17 years, 11 of them for South Africa, then went on to be a professional coach, which he has been doing for the last 18 years. Both careers are strewn with fascinating highs and lows as he played with and against, coached some of the world's best cricketers. Along the way he has accumulated a wealth of experience. He generously shares the lessons he's learnt with us in this episode. Gary wasn't even the most talented cricketer in his family, and by professional standards was a batsman of average talent. He began developing a game plan and mindset early on in his life that would see him leverage the best of his average talent, leading him to the top of the international game. He reflects on this and how he feels he could have done better. A deeply personal coaching conversation between him and I, towards the back end of his playing career, changed his perspective on life and on his game, and lead to his best season ever. At the time he wrote me a letter about the impact that it had on him. Gary opens up about this, and 16 years later, allows me to read you some of that letter. As head coach, Gary lead the Indian Cricket team to become world test champions and to win the 2011 ICC World Cup. He then went on to lead the South African national team to become the first team in the world to simultaneously hold the world number 1 ranking in all three formats of the international game. Throughout the five years with both teams, I was Gary's assistant, confidant, and the team's mental coach. Listen in as we talk about this journey, about what worked, what didn't, and why. For the first time since it happened 12 years ago, we discuss my biggest ever professional f*#k-up, which negatively impacted Gary. We speak about what lead me to make such a big mistake, the impact it had on Gary personally and on our relationship, and how we dealt with it. We also explore how well (or badly) the sporting world is doing in relation to hiring, assessing and firing coaches - and how this could be done more effectively. This conversation is candid, free-flowing, and authentic. It's packed with fascinating insights for coaches, leaders and anyone interested in learning from Gazza, an ordinary man who has achieved extra-ordinary things. Gary Kirsten reveals how important it is to listen to each other's stories. He shares how he was confronted with listening to his team manager's story and how it affected him. If we don't stop and listen to everyone's journey, we won't have a good understanding of each other's background and we don't understand each other. We can start with a restoration process and find solutions together and build trust, but if we don't listen to people's stories, we can't build trust. We don't have to be qualified to listen. We want to tell more than what we listen to. We need to ask each other questions and rather ask how you can help instead of deciding what you want to help with. #stories #trust #listen #garykirsten Follow us on social: www.facebook.com/StoriesThatInspireSA www.instagram.com/storiesthatinspiresa/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/stories-that-inspire/message
Paddy Upton is not your typical Cricket coach. A deep thinker with four different degrees from four different universities, Paddy actually started as the strength and conditioning coach for the South African cricket team in the mid 90's under the late Bob Woolmer. However, he soon shifted his focus to mental conditioning and performance mindset, and this change in direction certainly has given Paddy a point of difference in the Cricket coaching world.Paddy was appointed Mental Conditioning and Strategic Leadership Coach of the Indian cricket team in 2008. Working alongside head coach Gary Kirsten, the Indian team attained the ICC top test team ranking for their first time in 2009, and went on to win the ICC World Cup on home soil in 2011. He was also appointed the Performance Director of the South Africa Cricket Team from 2011 to 2014, who became the first team to simultaneously hold the ICC World number 1 ranking in all 3 formats.Paddy has coached five different T20 teams in three major leagues, including being the head coach of the Pune Warriors, Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Daredevils in the IPL, and also the Sydney Thunder in the BBL, famously taking them from wooden spooners to champions within two seasons.Author of the best-selling book, “The Barefoot Coach. Life-changing insights from coaching the world's best cricketers”, Paddy also has comprehensive online mental and personal coaching programs aimed at both elite athletes and coaches that are world class. Following his retirement in 2004, Gary was appointed the coach of the Indian Cricket team late in 2007. He would go on to lead India to the top of the test rankings and to World Cup champions on home soil in 2011. Gary would then coach South Africa and take them to the top of the test rankings, before moving on to coach in T20 leagues around the world, including the IPL and BBL. As a coach, Gary Kirsten points out the tactics of scouting and identifying real talent. Scores are never enough. Watching someone in the game, and looking for coordination, and see how well someone is acquainted with the ball as well as the bat gives him a better idea of what could be possible. Gary explains that it takes a trained eye to see the little flared moments to understand coordination with a ball, and seeing that the talent is there, and it can be developed. Over the last five years no Test opening batsman has scored more runs than Dean Elgar. The Proteas left-hander has knocked off 3018 runs at an average 40.78 since 2016 and has become an indispensable part of the team. Making runs at the top of the order and seeing off the new ball is a vital skill and Elgar has continued to produce for his team, continuing a post-isolation tradition of gritty opening left-handers that have excelled in the Test arena, after Gary Kirsten and Graeme Smith. Over the coming weeks he will face a new challenge when he opens against Pakistan, in Pakistan. Conditions might suit reverse swing and Elgar will again have his technique and fortitude tested in a new way. As always, he is up for the challenge.

As England's tour of South Africa gets under way, the two latest guests of Peter Oborne and Richard Heller on their cricket-themed podcast offer deep insight into South African cricket past and present. Mo Allie, of the BBC Africa service has reported on South African sport for many years and is the author of More Than A Game, telling many heroic stories of South Africa's non-white cricketers in times of racial segregation. Cricket historian and analyst Arunabha Sengupta has written Apartheid – A Point To Cover, the story of South African cricket to 1970 and of the successful Stop The 70 Tour campaign. Mike Atherton delivers an appeal for the MCC Foundation. For a week from 1 December donations will be doubled in value, and will help to give cricketing experience and access to coaching for disadvantaged boys and girls. See https://donate.thebiggive.org.uk/campaign/a051r00001eojcBAAQMo explains the turmoil in South Africa's cricket administration which almost caused the cancellation of England's tour. He and Arunabha also analyse the bitter conflicts within South Africa over taking the knee in support of BlackLivesMatter. They have their roots in the poisoned legacy of apartheid, which created inequalities and imbalances in South African society which will take generations to eradicate, in the present violence which engulfs the country, and in a failure, not only in South Africa, to shake off cultural attitudes and racial myths formed in colonial times. Mo conveys the shock in South Africa when Makaya Ntini, the “poster boy” for its newly integrated cricket, revealed the loneliness he experienced in the team through enduring racism. He reveals that white players who took the knee earlier this year received death threats. Arunabha shows how racial segregation was embedded in South African cricket long before it was formalized and developed under apartheid, citing particularly the case of Krom Hendricks, a brilliant pace bowler of mixed race, denied international selection as far back as 1894 at the behest of Cecil Rhodes. He was the first of many non-white cricketers excluded by a “100 per cent white” quota system. Mo gives moving personal testimony of the losses experienced by his family through waves of discriminatory laws, especially from enforced removals, and of what it was like for him to grow up under apartheid. Many non-white people, not only in sport, had to go overseas to get a career, and the talents of millions more were lost to the world.Arunabha traces the impact of exclusion from international cricket and sport generally on the image and self-confidence of a sports-crazed nation, and how Nelson Mandela later saw integrated sport as an agent of change. He cites Mike Procter and Clive Rice on the effect of playing in multi-racial English county cricket in taking South African players out of their “white bubble.”Mo expresses deep worry about the shortage of selfless capable leaders not only in South African cricket but in other sectors. Racial quotas and stereotypes are too often blamed for failures. The “rainbow nation” may be dissolving as communities retreat into their own laagers and compete for scarce resources in a deeply troubled economy. However, both he and Arunabha see signs of positivity and hope, not least in the public efforts to promote inclusion through cricket by former cricketers such as Lance Klusener, Paul Adams, and especially Gary Kirsten, who is developing the talents of disadvantaged young players at his cricket academy. They also cite the successes of South African women in cricket and other sports and the efforts led by Professor André Odendaal (a future guest) to recapture the lost history of non-white players and make the nation aware of its full sporting legacy.

It's been a magnificent week in the world of cricket! In this episode, Ashwin, DJ, and Varun are back together and they discuss about one of their mutual love: Cricket! They start the discussion with the ongoing, India-South Africa test match. 'Aiden Markram ruled out of the third Test with a self-inflicted wrist injury' which DJ thinks is because of the trend that Stokes started by breaking his wrist punching the locker. They also talk about Markram being a potential future South Africa captain and if this incident has put any dent in that decision or not. (All puns intended) Some insightful thoughts on Shahbaz Nadeem coming in suddenly overnight into the squad in place of Kuldeep who is out because of an injury. Rohit's magnificent innings! They passionately talk about how Rohit Sharma is opening test matches and it feels like he's been waiting for it all his life! What a great knock by Sharma at a point when India was 39 for 3. How can Rohit Sharma hit a six at 199 to get to 200 in a test match and how it reminded the trio of a legend!
