Ex-Black Caps batter Colin Munro believes he was “blacklisted” by New Zealand Cricket for opting to ply his trade as a Twenty20 freelancer. Munro, 37, has not played for the Black Caps at any level since 2020, but on Friday officially confirmed his time as an international is done. While he hasn't appeared for New Zealand in more than four years, Munro has been a fixture in overseas Twenty20 leagues as one of the most prominent faces in the franchise game. But speaking to Newstalk ZB's Jason Pine, Munro questioned the approach of New Zealand Cricket, and former chief executive David White, for overlooking players seeking to make the most of professional opportunities. “I've always been available,” he said. “Under David White, if you were playing franchise cricket and weren't playing domestic cricket in New Zealand, you were sort of blacklisted, I think. “It was never told [like] that to me, but I think it was. There were the likes of Anton Devcich, myself, Mitchell McClenaghan, those players who all chose franchise cricket. “As soon as you weren't playing in New Zealand, there was a black mark next to your name. You weren't going to play.” Munro isn't alone in that regard either. As one of New Zealand's white ball greats, Martin Guptill hasn't worn the silver fern at any level since he opted out of his central contract in late 2022. However, under new chief executive Scott Weenink, New Zealand Cricket appears to have relaxed its selection criteria. The pair of Trent Boult and Jimmy Neesham, both without central contracts to pursue franchise opportunities, were selected for last year's 50-over World Cup in India, and the upcoming T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and US. As the Black Caps picked a heavily depleted squad to tour Pakistan earlier this year, Munro turned down an approach to return to the fold to spend time with his family after finishing his commitments with Islamabad United. And having made the initial approach to see him return, Munro also questioned why New Zealand Cricket would sound him out, only to overlook him altogether. Colin Munro (left) and Martin Guptill have both been consistently overlooked by New Zealand Cricket after opting to pursue franchise cricket. Photo / Photosport “It was my dream, I thought it was gone,” he said. “Then you get a phone call out of the blue [to ask] are you available for a World Cup? “You get up and about, start thinking and dreaming like a young kid. You haven't played for four years, so you think you could probably get up to have one last hurrah in the black jersey, in conditions that I'm really familiar with in Trinidad. “Then the World Cup squad was announced. I'm not going to lie, I was a little bit gutted I wasn't in there, just because I was in talks and in the frame. “But I can fully understand why. Those boys fully deserve it, I'll be behind them every step of the way. “I just don't know why that was put in front of me. It would have been nice to know, did I have to go on the Pakistan tour? They said I didn't have to, that's why I ended up choosing not to. “If I had gone over there and done well, I still might not have gone to the World Cup.” If Munro had been selected for the World Cup, the Black Caps would have gained a valuable asset. In the history of T20 cricket, only 11 players have appeared in more matches for the Black Caps. All up, Munro has 428 appearances in the shortest format, with 79 of them coming for the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League. Trinbago's home ground of the Brian Lara Cricket Academy is where the Black Caps will play three matches at this year's World Cup, against hosts West Indies, Uganda and Papua New Guinea. At international level, Munro played 65 T20 Internationals, and was the first man to score three centuries for his country in the shortest format. That number could have been higher, were it not for spending the past four years on the sidelines. In 2020, Munro lost his New Zealand Cricket central contract, and opted to dedicate his career to the shortest format as a T20 gun for hire. Since then, he's accrued experience playing everywhere from Australia's Big Bash League to Canada's Global T20. Alex Powell is an Online Sports Editor for the NZ Herald. She has been a host of the Cricket Show, Holden Golf World, NZ Herald Focus as well as most of Sky's major sporting events, and held breakfast radio rolls at Hauraki and the Hits. A third senior Black Cap has been released from his New Zealand Cricket contract to pursue lucrative T20 contracts around the world. Black Caps opener Martin Guptill is the most experienced player named in the squad for next month's T20 World Cup in Australia but he's under pressure to keep his starting spot. Guptill will make a record seventh appearance at a T20 World Cup after being included in a largely predictable New Zealand squad for the tournament. The 35-year-old is aware newcomer Finn Allen will challenge him for a place at the top of the order.
The Black Caps made history by winning the third and deciding one-day international in Barbados yesterday - becoming the first New Zealand side to claim an ODI series win in the Caribbean. Half-centuries to Martin Guptill, Tom Latham, Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell set up the chase for an imposing 302 at Kensington Oval. Jimmy Neesham then whacked four sixes to get New Zealand home and continue their rampant form in the 50-over format. Former Black Caps opening batsman and commentator Craig Cumming spoke to Corin Dann.
Four batsmen posted half centuries as New Zealand overhauled the West Indies' total of 301-8 to win the deciding one-day international by five wickets. The win was an historic one for the Black Caps, whose victory in Barbados on Monday lifted them to a 2-1 series win and makes this their first ODI series win in the Caribbean. Tom Latham scored 69 and put on 120 for the fourth wicket with Daryl Mitchell (63) in a stand which paced the run chase and carried New Zealand in sight of victory. Martin Guptill (57) and Devon Conway (56) had earlier combined to add 82 runs for the second wicket to give New Zealand a platform for a demanding chase. Mitchell was out with the total 248 in the 42nd over and Latham at 259 in the 44th, still with New Zealand requiring 43 runs. Jimmy Neesham settled the issue with a decisive innings of 34 from 11 deliveries, taking 18 runs from the 45th over bowled by Yannic Cariah. Neesham hit a six from the bowling of West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran to end the chase with 17 balls remaining. "It was obviously nice to make a contribution," Latham said. "I think the partnership that Daryl and I were able to make put them under pressure. We set a target of getting to that 40-over mark where we needed a run a ball." Latham appeared to have erred when he chose to bowl first and as the West Indies flourished in good batting conditions. Kyle Mayers made 105 in a 173-run opening partnership with Shai Hope, and Pooran smashed nine sixes in a rapid 91 for the West Indies. The pitch proved much better for batting than those on which the West Indies won the first match by five wickets and New Zealand won the second by 50 runs. The highest previous total in the series was New Zealand's 212 in the second match. Mayers and Hope stayed together for almost 35 overs to shape the West Indies innings. Their partnership ended when Hope was out for 51 and, as often happens with large partnerships, partner Mayers was out two balls later and without addition to the total. Brandon King fell soon afterwards with the total 181-3 in a sudden reversal for the West Indies. But Pooran picked up the pace again, posting a half-century from 33 balls. He had hit nine sixes and four fours from 55 balls when he was out in the 49th over. Mayers and Hope made a cautious start to the innings as they found the pace of the new pitch, crawling to 24 after 10 overs, negotiating a short rain break in the seventh over. "I took my time in the powerplay and it gave me the chance to get in. The last two games I got out in the powerplay," Mayers said in a television interview. "It's not every day you bat the powerplay for 20 runs but it worked out well in the end." - APSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We start the show this week raving about Australia's World Cup win - one of the most dominant all-tournament displays that we've ever seen. Both Alyssa Healy and Rachel Haynes broke the record for most runs in a World Cup, and the professionalism of the entire Australian squad shone through in a tournament that has been a great advertisement for the game. As we start travelling the world, we speak briefly about an Australian ODI series loss to Pakistan, with Babar Azam in a starring role and questions about Aaron Finch. Jos Buttler is off to a flying start at the IPL with his Rajasthan Royals winning their first two games, but it's been tough going for both Mumbai and CSK. South Africa's spinners demolished Bangladesh, leading them to another Test victory as they continue their march up the World Test Championship ladder. But is it time to move back to neutral umpires? We finish the show by discussing the final two games of the New Zealand v Netherlands ODI series, which featured hundreds for Tom Latham, Will Young and Martin Guptill in Luteru Ross Taylor's 450th and final game for the Black Caps. Centuries from Martin Guptill and Will Young helped the Black Caps complete a series sweep against the Netherlands and send Ross Taylor out a winner. While the retiring great was dismissed for 14 in his final innings for New Zealand, it was fitting for that pair in particular to lead the way with the bat and set up a 115-run triumph at Seddon Park tonight.Guptill, who made Taylor best man at his wedding, compiled 106 for his 17th ODI ton, breaking a tie with Nathan Astle and moving second on this country's all-time standings. Young, whose playing time would likely increase in Taylor's absence, cracked 120 for his second century of the series and second of his career. The pair put on 203 runs from 205 balls for the second wicket, laying the platform for the Black Caps to make 333-8.In reply, the Netherlands were dismissed for 218 in the 43rd over as New Zealand ended a disrupted summer with a 3-0 victory over the minnows. That result was rarely in doubt, with the Dutch proving competitive in their first series against the Black Caps but only briefly threatening an upset. That was snuffed out when Tom Latham's ton pulled his side out of a 32-5 hole in the second match at Seddon Park, where Guptill and Young also found the conditions to their liking today. After a faint edge saw Henry Nicholls depart in the fifth over, Guptill slowly found his timing and reached 50 by pulling for six. Young then followed him to the milestone in the 35th over as the Black Caps reached 122-1 at the halfway mark.Guptill soon surpassed 7000 ODI runs, the fourth Kiwi to achieve that feat after Taylor, Stephen Fleming and Astle, before bringing up a 119-ball ton with another six. That was followed by the wicket the crowd wanted, with Taylor coming to the crease in time to congratulate Young for reaching three figures from 102 deliveries.Unfortunately for the fans, Taylor's stay was brief and his wicket saw the Black Caps lose 4-14. But the damage had been done and some late hitting from Doug Bracewell carried the total out of the tourists' reach. That was despite a fine opening knock from Stephan Myburgh, who followed Taylor into ODI retirement by smashing 64 from 43 balls. His dismissal by Colin de Grandhomme saw the chase falter before Matt Henry took four wickets to close out the victory, one eventually completed by a Taylor catch.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Today on the show - We talk to some drive thru dickheads, hear about some annoying co-workers, and Mel tells us what annoys her about the Rumble guys. We have a yarn with Jeff Wilson ahead of this weekends Heritage round in Super Rugby Pacific. And we also get Martin Guptill on the phone ahead of the Black Caps vs Netherlands series. It's been another busy week in the world of cricket and we start the show in Aotearoa to discuss the series of Conway and two impressive performances from the Black Caps. We praise Martin Guptill and Jimmy Neesham, discuss Kyle Jamieson's struggles for the first time in his international career and Baldy is left with more questions than answers when looking at this Australian T20 squad. As we move to the White Ferns v England ODI series, we ponder what changed from games 1-2 to game 3 and Lippy highlights the impressive debut of Brooke Halliday and a match-winning partnership as reason for optimism heading into the T20 fixtures despite a 2-1 series loss. We finish the New Zealand segment of the show with the Ford Trophy, where hundreds galore find Canterbury and Wellington in finals contention once again. After Raj's favourite noise, we head to Ahmedabad to debate the pitch and the ball, Binksy talks about bikinis and eventually we even talk about the cricket that was played during a Test that didn't last much longer than the podcast. Keep an eye on your feed over the coming days, as we'll have a few extra episodes this week, in which we discuss potential rule changes to our great game.
