Kane Williamson has padded up for the last time. He announced his retirement from international cricket ahead of the second test against England at Lords, bringing his highly successful over 15 year career to a close. One of Williamson's earliest teammates was BJ Watling, who played in the same game in which Williamson debuted for the Northern Districts. Watling told Piney his skill was apparent pretty early on and it wasn't long until he was straight into the runs. “I'm not sure if it was his first or second season, but he scored about seven 50s in a row in one of our one-day comps.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The off-field wrangling over whether New Zealand adopts a franchise Twenty20 cricket model continues. A group of fifteen former internationals signed an open letter raising concerns over the viability of NZ20, a privately backed T20 league. Richard Petrie was one of these signatories who sees this idea as being detrimental to domestic cricket in New Zealand. He told Piney they're not opposed to a T20 competition per se, but rather a private organisation coming in and taking over the January window for profit making reasons. Petrie says it would put New Zealand cricket in turmoil. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

High performance in cricket and sport in general is about far more than technical ability. In this episode of The Demystifying Mental Toughness Podcast, I'm joined by Stuart Barnes, Bowling Coach at Warwickshire County Cricket Club, for the second part of our conversation. Together we explore the unique pressures cricketers face and how coaches and psychologists can work hand in hand to support player growth, confidence, and resilience. The Player at the Centre Stuart highlights the importance of a joined-up approach between coaches, psychologists, and teammates, with the athlete always at the centre. Players often need space to talk, offload, and process challenges. Stuart shares how his own journey as a “failed professional cricketer” shaped his empathy and perspective, allowing him to connect with players authentically. Slowing the Game Down Under Pressure Cricket is both a team and an individual sport, making the psychological demands unique. Stuart describes how small pauses, two to five seconds between deliveries help bowlers reset, design a plan, and avoid rushing into a threat mindset. He shares practical questions bowlers can ask themselves in pressure moments to regain clarity, confidence, and control. Handling Selection Pressures One of the toughest realities in professional cricket is being dropped. Stuart emphasises the value of focusing only on what players can control; fitness, preparation, mindset, and energy in the dressing room. He describes these as the “free stuff” that costs nothing but adds significant value to team culture. >> Key Takeaways Slow the world down – Use strategies to pause, reset, and regain focus under pressure. Keep growing – There is no standing still; consistent small improvements matter. Build belief through actions – Confidence grows when you fulfil your daily commitments to yourself. This episode is packed with insights for cricketers, coaches, and parents of young athletes about the importance of mental toughness, supportive environments, and developing confidence from within. Kepler Wessels has the distinction of representing both Australia and South Africa in International Cricket. In this edition of the Cricket Library Podcast, Kepler Wessels joins host Matt Ellis to share his reflections on the origins of his passion for cricket, breaking into First Class Cricket at age 16 whilst still at school, moving to England and the influence of Tony Greig in getting him to Australia to play World Series Cricket. We hear about Kepler's test debut, where he made a big hundred, and we clear up who was to blame for the run-out of Greg Chappell in that innings. He shares his mindset for taking on and conquering the almighty West Indies pace attack of the 1980s. We get some insights into the Sheffield Shield final in the 1985/6 season and his dismissal of Mark Waugh in that game. Kepler speaks of the surprise of returning to play international cricket for South Africa, the thrill of beating Australia in their first game of the 92 World Cup and the disappointment of bowing out in a rain-affected semi-final. He shares the plan they hatched to dismiss Allan Border in the famous Sydney Test Match of 1994 and the elation of scoring a century at Lord's at the back end of his career. Kepler updates us on what he is up to now, including his work at Kepler Wessels Training. Of course, we don't let him get away without asking who the three people he would most like to join him at the cricket nets.
