Rod Lyall joins me from Sydney to talk about his new book "The Club". It's a fascinating account of the history of the governance of international cricket, rooted in the days of the British Empire and the evolution over the years and a power shift from St. Jonn's Wood to Dubai, Mumbai and beyond. We discuss the episodes of mismanagement, missed opportunities and poor decision-making down the years and what all this could mean for the future. Six dropped catches spoilt New Zealand's fielding and the chance to remove England cheaply on the second day of the first cricket test in Christchurch. The visitors are 319 for five in reply to the hosts' 348 with Harry Brook 132 and Ben Stokes 37. Brook was spilt four times - Ben Duckett and Ben Stokes survived other blemishes. The culprits, in no particular order, were Tom Latham – times three - Glenn Phillips, Devon Conway and Tom Blundell. Phillips redeemed himself with a one-handed dive to his right at gully to dismiss - and astonish - Ollie Pope on 77. On this episode I speak to a former international cricket umpire. Darrell Hair. He is an extremely prolific individual with a wide range of talents. Darrell could be remembered by some by making some potentially "controversial decisions" on the cricket field. Having umpired at the highest level across all forms of cricket for over 20 years he was faced with some rather challenging decisions. He was the Umpire that called a "No Ball" against the greatest wicket taker of all time "Muttiah Muralitharan" of Sri Lanka and was one of the umpires that found the Pakistani cricket team guilty of ball tampering. Between all this, his time in broadcasting, being a published author and much more Darrell was generous with his time. Sit back relax and hear him recall some amazing stories and please enjoy If anyone is interested in reading Darrell's books or becoming involved with our station find the links below : Regards M https://www.amazon.com.au/Best-Interests-Game-Darrell-Story-ebook/dp/B005HBAF5W https://fm1075.com.au/

Kepler Wessels has the distinction of representing both Australia and South Africa in International Cricket. In this edition of the Cricket Library Podcast, Kepler Wessels joins host Matt Ellis to share his reflections on the origins of his passion for cricket, breaking into First Class Cricket at age 16 whilst still at school, moving to England and the influence of Tony Greig in getting him to Australia to play World Series Cricket. We hear about Kepler's test debut, where he made a big hundred, and we clear up who was to blame for the run-out of Greg Chappell in that innings. He shares his mindset for taking on and conquering the almighty West Indies pace attack of the 1980s. We get some insights into the Sheffield Shield final in the 1985/6 season and his dismissal of Mark Waugh in that game. Kepler speaks of the surprise of returning to play international cricket for South Africa, the thrill of beating Australia in their first game of the 92 World Cup and the disappointment of bowing out in a rain-affected semi-final. He shares the plan they hatched to dismiss Allan Border in the famous Sydney Test Match of 1994 and the elation of scoring a century at Lord's at the back end of his career. Kepler updates us on what he is up to now, including his work at Kepler Wessels Training. Of course, we don't let him get away without asking who the three people he would most like to join him at the cricket nets.
