Nee, het is niet zo dat asielzoekers maar een klein deel van de migratie naar Nederland uitmaken. Nee, het is niet zo dat migratie nauwelijks een rol speelt bij het tekort aan woningen. En nee, het is niet zo dat statushouders slechts 7 procent van de vrijgekomen sociale huurwoningen innemen. Migratiedeskundige dr JAN VAN DE BEEK heeft er bijna een dagtaak aan om alle desinformatie, alle mythes, de onwetendheid en soms ook de pure leugens over (asiel)migratie te weerleggen. Juist aan de vooravond van Tweede Kamerverkiezingen blijkt de desinformatie opvallend hardnekkig, zowel bij politici als bij tv-presentatoren, (andere) journalisten en soms ook slecht geïnformeerde wetenschappers. Asielmigratie maakt bijvoorbeeld samen met de toestroom van ontheemden uit Oekraïne een derde uit van de bevolkingsgroei door immigratie naar Nederland. Arbeidsmigranten zorgen ook voor een derde. En de rest, zoals studiemigratie eveneens voor een derde. Samen leggen ze een grote druk op het woningtekort in Nederland, de sociale huurwoningen in het bijzonder. Van de Beek stelt dat toenmalig Frits Bolkestein dertig jaar geleden al de Statenverkiezingen won en zijn partij voor het eerst de grootste van het land maakte door immigratie en asiel op de agenda te zetten. Helaas is er sindsdien niets ten goede gebeurd, zegt Van de Beek. Dat komt in belangrijke mate doordat een land als Nederland zijn bevoegdheden vrijwel helemaal uit handen heeft gegeven, door het lidmaatschap van de Europese Unie en door het tekenen van internationale verdragen. Tweede Kamerverkiezingen doen er daarom nauwelijks toe, omdat volksvertegenwoordigers de macht uit handen hebben gegeven. Vandaar ook de vele onmachtige straatprotesten, niet alleen tegen het asielbeleid, maar bijvoorbeeld ook tegen het stikstofbeleid. Jan van de Beek geniet steeds meer erkenning als dé migratiedeskundige van Nederland. Oud-burgemeester Koen Schuiling van Groningen werd afgelopen maart veroordeeld vanwege schennispleging. De afgelopen maanden is NRC in de zaak gedoken voor een reconstructie. Wat is de rol van de media in deze zaak geweest? Media die dit verhaal aanvankelijk op de voet en tot in detail volgden, maar nu beduidend minder gretig zijn. Hansje van de Beek, onderzoeksjournalist bij Argos, denkt dat dit komt omdat het verhaal best ingewikkeld is om kort samen te vatten. Roos Moggré, presentator van EenVandaag, heeft het verhaal van NRC met open mond zitten lezen, ook Van de Beek was onder de indruk. NRC sprak met maar liefst 25 betrokkenen, die allemaal 'on the record' hun verhaal wilden doen. Van de Beek vraagt zich door dit stuk ook af of we wel kritisch genoeg zijn geweest toen het nieuws over Schuiling voor het eerst naar buiten kwam. "Hij is veroordeeld op basis van een bron, daar hadden we toen ook al van kunnen zeggen, was dat genoeg?"

For more than 30 years, he and his wife Joanne have lived in one of Tegucigalpa's most dangerous neighborhoods, working alongside local leaders to reduce homicide, reform policing, and advocate for systemic justice. Ver Beek's leadership helped drive Honduras's historic police purge, which dismissed thousands of corrupt officers and introduced new accountability structures. In Part I, Ross Halperin and I laid a foundation for the work of ASJ in Honduras under the leadership of Kurt Ver Beek and others. In this episode, I am joined by Kurt himself to discuss his exchange of letters between Nicholas Wolterstorff in a wonderful book, Call for Justice: From Practice to Theory and Back, which looks at the meaning of justice and the work ASJ. Kurt is joined by Emily Cole, who has focused on Latin America most of her career and remains a passionate advocate for the well-being and development of that region. I speak to them about a number of things, focusing on the structural details of working in the area, including the difference between social justice and community development, the importance of long-term missionary work, the significance of elections, working with the government, and more. Kurt and his wife, Jo Ann Van Engen, are currently the directors of Calvin University's Justice Studies Semester, which studies the concept of justice in relation to history, economics, politics, sociology, and development in Honduras. Both are founding members of the Association for a More Just Society (ASJ) in Honduras. ASJ seeks to do justice in Honduras and inspire others around the world to seek justice in their own contexts.
