De ruimte voor wat in Nederland als een respectabele mening wordt gezien wordt systematisch ingeperkt, zegt BART NIJMAN in dit WWTV-gesprek met SYP WYNIA. Haagse politici en Hilversumse tv-makers perken de ruimte voor vrije meningsuiting steeds verder in en de razendsnelle mediaconcentratie in Nederland doet de rest. Nijman was een van de grondleggers van GeenStijl en werkt sinds enkele jaren vanuit Portugal als podcaster, blogger en columnist. Nijman: ‘Ik heb GeenStijl altijd gezien als een plek waar de vrijheid van meningsuiting getest moest kunnen worden. Als je de randen opzoekt, houd je de rek er in. Die ruimte wordt nu steeds kleiner. Dat zie je in hoe Wierd Duk wordt bejegend. Er wordt steeds geprobeerd hem te verbannen uit het kleine vierkantje dat er nog over is aan geaccepteerde opvattingen. Dat gebeurt zowel in het Mediapark als bij kranten als Volkskrant en NRC. Zoals ook demograaf Jan van de Beek en natuurkundige Arnout Jaspers eerst worden genegeerd en als dat niet meer lukt met alle middelen worden aangevallen.' Het goede nieuws is dat steeds meer Nederlanders de diversiteit aan meningen en de veelheid van informatie dan maar zoekt bij internetmedia zoals die van hem zelf en Wynia's Week – ‘Vrije Media', zoals Nijman en Wynia die noemen: geen onderdeel van een groot concern en evenmin onderdeel van een met belastinggeld betaalde instituut als de publieke omroep. Nijman en Wynia verbazen zich over het gebrek aan kritische houding van traditionele media bij het overheidsbeleid, of het nu gaat over de plotselinge miljarden voor Oekraïne nadat Mark Rutte gevraagd was voor de Navo of over de beweegredenen van de Arnhemse burgemeester Ahmed Marcouch om moslims ter wille te zijn. Nijman: ‘Marcouch laadt de verdenking op zich meer islamist te zijn dan hij zich voordoet. In Part I, Ross Halperin and I laid a foundation for the work of ASJ in Honduras under the leadership of Kurt Ver Beek and others. In this episode, I am joined by Kurt himself to discuss his exchange of letters between Nicholas Wolterstorff in a wonderful book, Call for Justice: From Practice to Theory and Back, which looks at the meaning of justice and the work ASJ. Kurt is joined by Emily Cole, who has focused on Latin America most of her career and remains a passionate advocate for the well-being and development of that region. I speak to them about a number of things, focusing on the structural details of working in the area, including the difference between social justice and community development, the importance of long-term missionary work, the significance of elections, working with the government, and more. Kurt and his wife, Jo Ann Van Engen, are currently the directors of Calvin University's Justice Studies Semester, which studies the concept of justice in relation to history, economics, politics, sociology, and development in Honduras. Both are founding members of the Association for a More Just Society (ASJ) in Honduras. ASJ seeks to do justice in Honduras and inspire others around the world to seek justice in their own contexts.
