This week on the show, Binksy, Jamie, Baldy and Stu felt like bouncing around a few topics in the aftermath of the Champions Trophy before the news cycle is dominated by the IPL. There's a bit of ODI format chat, then a quick check-in on the teams we support - Australia, England and New Zealand. The episode starts with a discussion about the Champions Trophy format and ODI cricket in general. Did the tournament make a convincing case that there's still life left in 50-over cricket? Or are ODIs too formulaic? If the number of bilateral ODIs are declining, is that a problem? Or does it make these tournaments more exciting? Was the jeopardy of knockout cricket something the World Cup should consider? Or is a longer tournament still the best way to find out who the best team in the world is? We round out the show by touching base in Australia to wonder whether any of the fringe players did enough to force their way into best XIs when Cummins, Hazlewood and co. return? Then in England to ponder on the white-ball captaincy after Jos Buttler decided to step down. And we finish by looking at New Zealand's home series against Pakistan, which saw the return of some familiar names in Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, Jimmy Neesham and Ish Sodhi, but it was Kyle Jamieson who stole the show in the first T20 as the Black Caps powered to an emphatic win. I still don't know why there weren't any warmup games. I can only assume, only assume, as Dylan said - that T20 just doesn't matter as much to New Zealand cricket as the other forms of the game otherwise. They simply would not have sent the players into battle underprepared. There is a rationale to say a decent chunk of the side have come from the IPL, where they've been playing a lot of T20 cricket, but the fact is most of them didn't actually play a heck of a lot in the IPL. Most of the New Zealand players who were in the IPL weren't really first choice for their sides. And those who did play didn't exactly set the world on fire - it has to be said. The fact is, of the others, they've hardly played any T20 cricket and all recently. Finn Allen's last game of T20 cricket was in February, Same with Devon Conway, Same with Glenn Phillips. These guys haven't played T20 for three or four months, so to expect them to go into unfamiliar surroundings, and perform straight away in what has turned out to be a pretty crucial match is fanciful. Yes, they're good players, I don't think there's any selection issue here. You wouldn't say that these aren't our best T20 players on form and reputation. So, it's not as though you say, ‘he shouldn't be there, he should be there instead.' Yes, you can talk about selection of the 11 for yesterday. I'd have Rachin Ravindra in there and probably Jimmy Neesham as well. And they may make those changes. But by and large, it's our best players in the squad. It just seems to be a complete oversight in terms of giving them any preparation at all, Afghanistan aren't a bad side, we're not talking about a minnow anymore. Afghanistan are a good white ball side, and they proved that yesterday. You can't go in half-baked. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Elliott Smith: Black Caps v Pakistan - Mark Chapman inspires New Zealand to emphatic bounceback victory

Early Edition with Kate Hawkesby

The Black Caps have responded in style, as Mark Chapman inspired New Zealand to a series-levelling seven-wicket victory over Pakistan in Rawalpindi. Just 24 hours after being bowled out for 90 to lose by seven wickets at the same venue, a heavily depleted Black Caps side flipped the script on their hosts, and chased down their target of 179 runs with ease. That chase was anchored by an unbeaten 87 from Chapman, who continued his love affair with Pakistan after being named man-of-the-series in New Zealand's 2-2 draw just over a year ago. Arriving at the crease at 53/2, Chapman scored a 29-ball half-century, and added a 117-run partnership with Dean Foxcroft (31 off 29) to all but get the Black Caps home. New Zealand's win was made all the more impressive by the fact the squad was depleted even further, as neither Ben Lister nor Josh Clarkson travelled to the ground after being struck by illness. As captain Michael Bracewell won the toss and opted to field first, the stand-in skipper would have been forgiven for ruing his decision as Pakistan made 178/4 from their 20 overs. While no Pakistan batter passed 50, partnerships of 55 between openers Babar Azam (37 off 29) and Saim Ayub (32 off 22) and 62 between Shadab Khan (41 off 20) and Irfan Khan (30 not out off 20) made up the bulk of the total. Ish Sodhi was the pick of the Kiwi attack, and took 2/25 from his four overs, as the rest of New Zealand's attack struggled to contain Pakistan. The pair of Zak Foulkes and Will O'Rourke both went wicketless in their first taste of the shortest format at international level. In reply, New Zealand's openers got off to their best start of the series, as Tim Seifert (21 off 16) and Tim Robinson (28 off 19) added 42 for the first wicket. Once they fell, though, the pair of Chapman and Foxcroft took over. In 42 balls, the pair added a 50 stand, but needed just 17 more to raise their century partnership as Chapman took over. The left-hander plundered nine boundaries and four sixes in his innings, and reached his seventh T20 international fifty in the process. Once Foxcroft went, though, caught and bowled by Abbas Afridi, New Zealand needed just nine runs from more than three overs. And after Jimmy Neesham found the rope with the final ball of the 18th over, Chapman sealed the win at the start of the 19th, and at the very least ensured the new-look Black Caps won't leave Pakistan empty-handed. Both teams will now enjoy three days off, as the series relocates from Rawalpindi to Lahore for games four and five. Alex Powell is an Online Sports Editor for the NZ Herald. On this episode of the show, we've got one eye on the ICC Men's World Cup as we discuss England v New Zealand, Australia v South Africa and the Pakistan v India Cup.The Black Caps named their World Cup squad this week, with spots for Will Young, Mark Chapman and Jimmy Neesham, but Finn Allen and Adam Milne miss out. Did they get the balance right?Through the lens of the current ODI series against England, we also take a deeper dive into the squad and how they might line up at the tournament:Who are the key players in the batting lineup and why is it Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell? How will four seamers fit into three spots?Trent Boult is awesomeOn the England side, questions still remain about Harry Brook and whether he's doing enough to force his way into the squad. Liam Livingstone is putting his hand up, though, as is Gus Atkinson, who is shining among a number of England seamers all fighting for game time.Over in South Africa, the Australians continue to outplay the home side - even ones who weren't initially named in the starting XI. We debate whether Marnus Labuschagne's match-winning performance as a concussion substitute and the hundred that followed will be enough to get himself on the plane to India. We also shine the spotlight on South Africa to ask: Are they serious contenders at this World Cup?The Asia Cup has moved to the Super 4 phase, India and Pakistan played a one-dayer over two days and Virat Kohli scored his 47th ODI hundred. There was a hundred too for KL Rahul, who returned from injury to strengthen his case for a spot in the starting XI, and high praise from us for Kuldeep Yadav, who has roared back into form over the past 12 months and now looks primed to have a big impact on the World Cup. The only constant is drama - and the Gujarat Titans winning - with all 10 teams still in the hunt for a top 4 spot. The Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals were terrible, now they are the form teams, while the Lucknow Super Giants and Trent Boult's Rajasthan Royals are on the slide. We discuss impactful performances from Rinku Singh, Andre Russell, Glenn Phillips, Jos Buttler and Wriddiman Saha - plus the arguably less positive impact made by Virat Kohli. In the second half of the episode, we look at the positives from the Black Caps' ODI series with Pakistan, and ponder the World Cup selection questions that still remain unanswered. Should New Zealand favour specialists like Will Young, Mark Chapman, Tom Blundell and Ish Sodhi? Or lean towards allrounders like Jimmy Neesham, Michael Bracewell and Rachin Ravindra? Has Adam Milne done enough to take Lockie Ferguson's spot as the designated speedster? And does Devon Conway need to pack his wicketkeeping gloves or not? We'll be back next week with more from the IPL and other news from around the world, including the build-up to the World Test Championship Final and the Ashes. After a wild weekend where NZ and England qualified ahead of Australia in Group 1, all eyes were then on Group 2 where The Mighty Netherlands tipped over South Africa to send Group 2 into a frenzy. That made Pakistan v Bangladesh a quarter final, while India dusted Zimbabwe to go top of that group. Semi Finals now are Pakistan v NZ and England v India... mouth watering... Sunrisers Eastern Cape won a fierce bidding war against MI Cape Town and Johannesburg Super Kings to snap up their homegrown star-in-the-making.   Uncapped 24-year-old batter Donavon Ferreira, who plays for Titans in the South African domestic circuit, created a big stir. Having listed his base price at Rand 175,000 (USD 10,000 approx.), Ferreira, who also bowls a bit and keeps wicket, was eventually snapped up by Super Kings for Rand 5.5 million (USD 310,000 approx.) in the accelerated round of the auction. The winning bid came after some chaos, as Paarl Royals and Pretoria Capitals both tried to outbid Super Kings but were forced to pull out as they didn't have much left in their purse at that point and had other spots still to fill - if they were allowed to keep bidding, they would have run out of the money needed to fill their quota of 17 players. Ferreira has played 19 T20s so far, and boasts a strike rate of 148.26 and an average of 54.85.   The Jansen brothers - Duan and Marco - were also in demand, with Marco joining Stubbs at Sunrisers for Rand 6.1 million (USD 344,000 approx.) and Duan going to MI for Rand 3.3 million (USD 186,000 approx.). Marco is already part of the Sunrisers franchise in the IPL, while Duan was recently with the Mumbai Indians development squad that toured the UK.   Kolpak-returnee Rilee Rossouw, who has played T20 cricket around the world, also hit paydirt, with Capitals forking out Rand 6.9 million (USD 389,000 approx.) for him. Wayne Parnell, another Kolpak returnee, also triggered a bidding war, which was won by Capitals too. They outbid Super Kings and got the left-arm seam-bowling allrounder for Rand 5.6 million (USD 316,000 approx).   However, there were no takers for South Africa's T20I captain Temba Bavuma and Test captain Dean Elgar.

Four batsmen posted half centuries as New Zealand overhauled the West Indies' total of 301-8 to win the deciding one-day international by five wickets. The win was an historic one for the Black Caps, whose victory in Barbados on Monday lifted them to a 2-1 series win and makes this their first ODI series win in the Caribbean. Tom Latham scored 69 and put on 120 for the fourth wicket with Daryl Mitchell (63) in a stand which paced the run chase and carried New Zealand in sight of victory. Martin Guptill (57) and Devon Conway (56) had earlier combined to add 82 runs for the second wicket to give New Zealand a platform for a demanding chase. Mitchell was out with the total 248 in the 42nd over and Latham at 259 in the 44th, still with New Zealand requiring 43 runs. Jimmy Neesham settled the issue with a decisive innings of 34 from 11 deliveries, taking 18 runs from the 45th over bowled by Yannic Cariah. Neesham hit a six from the bowling of West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran to end the chase with 17 balls remaining. "It was obviously nice to make a contribution," Latham said. "I think the partnership that Daryl and I were able to make put them under pressure. We set a target of getting to that 40-over mark where we needed a run a ball." Latham appeared to have erred when he chose to bowl first and as the West Indies flourished in good batting conditions. Kyle Mayers made 105 in a 173-run opening partnership with Shai Hope, and Pooran smashed nine sixes in a rapid 91 for the West Indies. The pitch proved much better for batting than those on which the West Indies won the first match by five wickets and New Zealand won the second by 50 runs. The highest previous total in the series was New Zealand's 212 in the second match. Mayers and Hope stayed together for almost 35 overs to shape the West Indies innings. Their partnership ended when Hope was out for 51 and, as often happens with large partnerships, partner Mayers was out two balls later and without addition to the total. Brandon King fell soon afterwards with the total 181-3 in a sudden reversal for the West Indies. But Pooran picked up the pace again, posting a half-century from 33 balls. He had hit nine sixes and four fours from 55 balls when he was out in the 49th over. Mayers and Hope made a cautious start to the innings as they found the pace of the new pitch, crawling to 24 after 10 overs, negotiating a short rain break in the seventh over. "I took my time in the powerplay and it gave me the chance to get in. The last two games I got out in the powerplay," Mayers said in a television interview. "It's not every day you bat the powerplay for 20 runs but it worked out well in the end." - APSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The good news for the Black Caps is the test series starts on Thursday. The bad news? Well, there was a bit of that. New Zealand slumped to their fourth-heaviest loss by runs in T20 international history, being swept 3-0 by India at Eden Gardens this morning. The hosts triumphed by 73 runs in Kolkata, a margin of defeat for the Black Caps that marked an ignominious end to a forgettable series. After being competitive in the first match - which came three days removed from their World Cup final heartbreak - New Zealand were taken apart in the next two. There is hardly need for much recrimination, not after such a successful World Cup campaign, but this series will have certainly stung the pride. India even set themselves a challenge today, as if to make life more interesting. Boasting a perfect record when chasing and a losing record when batting first this year, they opted for the latter approach after again winning the toss. But no mercy was shown to an already-vanquished opponent as India proceeded to outplay New Zealand in all three facets and record their biggest T20I victory over the Black Caps. After stand-in skipper Mitchell Santner (3-27) was the only bowler to find much joy as India racked up 184-7, Martin Guptill (51 from 36) was the sole batsman to put up much of a fight in the chase. It had looked likely to be a tough day for the tourists from the moment India raced to 69-0 at the end of their powerplay. Ferguson, Trent Boult and Adam Milne all struggled to find their line as India had almost as many boundaries (13) as dot balls (16), before Santner's introduction pegged back the hosts. He and Ish Sodhi combined for 4-58 from their allotment - with Sodhi snaffling a brilliant caught-and-bowled chance on an otherwise poor fielding day for New Zealand - before Ferguson (1-45) and Milne (1-47) returned to the attack as India finished how they started. Rohit Sharma (56 from 31) again tormented the bowlers but Guptill began intent to match his counterpart, although he was fortunate to survive being dropped in the first over. Daryl Mitchell went cheaply before Mark Chapman and Glenn Phillips fell for consecutive ducks, New Zealand stuttering to the end of the powerplay on 37-3. Guptill had added 32 of those runs and he soon advanced to a 19th T20I half century, helping his side reach 68-3 at the halfway stage. But three balls later the opener holed out to long on and the Black Caps' mission was nearing impossible. Self-inflicted blows further hindered the tourists' slim chances, as Seifert looked for an ill-considered second run and was caught short of his ground, while Jimmy Neesham's stay was brief and a second run out saw Santner also fall cheaply. It was ugly stuff and only a bit of free swinging from the tailenders prevented the loss from being any uglier. Thankfully for New Zealand, they will now be donning the whites for the first time since beating India to claim the World Test Championship in June. Thursday can't come soon enough.

Keen listeners of the show might be looking for our discussion about the evolution of T20 cricket, but two brilliant semi-finals had us buzzing with excitement so we decided to jump on the mics again for this extra episode to look back at these great games and then look forward to the big dance. Emotions were running high, but Binksy remained gracious in defeat in the face of Lippy's celebrations as we discussed the Black Caps' impressive victory against England, which had a few eerie similarities to that memorable World Cup final in 2019. We talk about the outstanding knocks from Daryl Mitchell and Jimmy Neesham, the impact of Devon Conway's injury and whether match-up cricket has gone too far. Later in the show, Baldy attempts to claim underdog status for all Australians, despite Matthew Wade and Marcus Stoinis powering them across the line against Pakistan. Raj wants to know why David Warner walked off the field despite being not out and we discover that the secret to winning at cricket is to not play cricket. Of course, we finish with predictions, but these have now become so meaningless that they've morphed into a strange game of reverse psychology - good luck trying to decipher that nonsense. The Black Caps will begin the defence of their ICC World Test Championship title without the services of two of its best players, after Trent Boult and Colin de Grandhomme ruled themselves out of the upcoming series against India.A 15-strong squad has been named for the two-Test series - to be played in Kanpur from November 25-29 and Mumbai from December 3-7 - that features five spin options; including 21-year-old Rachin Ravindra who has the opportunity to make his Test debut. However, both Boult and de Grandhomme - two of the side's best performers over the past several years - have decided to opt out of the tour due to concerns over the amount of time that would be required to be spent in Covid quarantine facilities.Black Caps coach Gary Stead said their decisions were completely understandable as player welfare is paramount within the side."Trent has already spent the best part of 60 days in hard managed isolation this year, while Colin had been on the road since May until recently returning home from Pakistan," Stead stated in a press release."From talking to both players it was clear the best option for them was to be left out of this Test tour and for them to instead focus on being ready for the New Zealand home summer."The loss of Boult and De Grandhomme opens up an opportunity for the likes of Ravindra and all-rounders Glenn Phillips and Will Somerville. All three provide spin options for the Black Caps alongside recent regulars - conditions dependent - Ajaz Patel and Mitchell Santner. The rest of the squad has a familiar feel with the regular Test top five and Will Young filling the batting positions, and Tim Southee, Neil Wagner and Kyle Jamieson providing the pace options. This series will also be the first without wicket-keeping stalwart BJ Watling after he retired following the WTC final win in England, with Tom Blundell set to take over the Test gloves.Stead said they'd very much taken a horses-for-courses approach when picking the tour squad."Touring India is one of the greatest experiences in cricket and I know our guys are really looking forward to the challenge," he said."It's fair to say we're expecting spin-friendly conditions and it's great to have a range of options in this department."The success of our spinners on recent tours to the sub-continent has been encouraging and we hope they can once again feature prominently."It's really exciting to begin the second instalment of the WTC and we know there'll be an extra incentive for all the teams we play following our win in the inaugural competition."Despite being the reigning World Test Championship champions, the Black Caps have never won a Test series on Indian soil.Meanwhile, the Black Caps will first face India in three T20 Internationals on November 17, 19 and 21 – with the current T20 World Cup squad carrying on for that series.Black Caps Test squad: Kane Williamson (c), Tom Blundell, Devon Conway, Henry Nicholls, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham, Ajaz Patel, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Will Somerville, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Neil Wagner, Will Young.T20 squad: Kane Williamson (c), Todd Astle, Trent Boult, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Martin Guptill, Kyle Jamieson, Adam Milne, Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Tim Seifert, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee.

New Zealand Cricket and the Players' Association are working hard to bring Kiwi cricketers in India back home, while members of the test team will fly straight to the United Kingdom ahead of the Black Caps' tour of England next month. It's uncertain and nervous times for many Kiwis in India, including the 10-player contingent and several more coaches and staff in the Covid-ravaged country for the Indian Premier League, which was suspended indefinitely on Tuesday after a number of players from three teams tested positive for the virus."The BCCI [Board of Control for Cricket in India] will do everything in its powers to arrange for the secure and safe passage of all the participants," IPL chairman Brijesh Patel said in a statement. That, however, is proving to be a challenging task, admits New Zealand Cricket Players' Association boss Heath Mills."The players and the coaches are all pretty anxious now," Mills told Newstalk ZB. "And they're pretty keen to come home, probably like most New Zealanders who are in India at the moment and keen to get back to this country."The biggest issue is the transfers and the logistics of getting people back to New Zealand. There's clearly a lack of flights leaving India. Some of the teams have been very proactive and are looking to put on chartered flights for some of the players, hopefully in the next two or three days. But others will essentially have to go through commercial flights from either Dubai or Doha or another port."Meanwhile, nine players and staff will head straight to England ahead of the Black Caps' two-test series against the hosts and the World Test Championship final against India.Black Caps captain Kane Williamson, Trent Boult, Kyle Jamieson and Mitchell Santner were already set to join the test squad in England later this month, while Lockie Ferguson, Jimmy Neesham and Finn Allen were also set to depart for the UK to play in the Twenty20 Blast before the IPL suspension. The other Kiwi IPL players - Tim Seifert, Adam Milne and Scott Kuggeleijn - will head back to New Zealand. The Times in the UK reported that several of England's 11 IPL players – Jos Buttler, Jason Roy and Sam and Tom Curran – had already boarded flights home."New Zealand Cricket is working really hard with the ECB [England and Wales Cricket Board] to try and organise a transfer leg for those players to get to that country," Mills said. "That's also not easy with restrictions with the UK government and also logistically how we move people from different cities in India to get on a chartered flight."We've got confidence in New Zealand Cricket and the ECB that they'll have player health and wellbeing as the number one priority."In terms of the players coming back to New Zealand, they're essentially on their own with their franchises' help and assistance where possible."Mills said it may take a few days to confirm the logistics around the flights out of the country, meaning the players – many of which will be in lockdown in hotel rooms – will have to "sit tight at the moment"."It's a challenging time but they're no different to a number of other people. We all see what's going on in India and really feel for the people of that country. It's a terrible tragedy unfolding there."Our guys, they understand that they're not more important than anyone else but we do need to try and help them where we can to get home."As a result of the IPL's suspension, the Black Caps and England should have their full squads available for the first test at Lord's on June 2."In theory they may well be available for the test but in all honesty at the moment it's not the focus," said Mills.

New Zealand named their squad to play the season-ending T20I series against Bangladesh and as was widely tipped, it will see a potential debut for explosive Wellington opener Finn Allen. The right-hander was at home in Auckland with extended family who gathered to say goodbye before he prepared to leave for the Indian Premier League, when he saw he had a call from Black Caps selector-coach Gary Stead. He left the room to take the call."I came out with a pretty big grin on my face," he said. "It's awesome to get that opportunity. I mean, who doesn't want to play for their country?"It caps a meteoric rise for the 21-year-old who a year ago was languishing on the fringes of the Auckland squad. Since then he has signed for Wellington, set records in the Super Smash, was called up as injury cover for Martin Guptill in the Black Caps, earned an IPL contract and now has a chance to prove himself at international level ahead of the World T20 in India this year."I'm so grateful to Cricket Wellington for giving me the opportunities," he said. The gratitude would be mutual.Allen was a pivotal part of Wellington's successful Super Smash side, scoring a competition-best 512 runs at an average of 56.9 and an eye-popping strike rate of 193.9.His approach is based on aggression, so he likes to call it "intent" and putting the new-ball bowlers under the cosh from ball one."For me [the key] is the simplicity of what I'm trying to do when I'm out there," he said. "Keeping my head as clear I can and literally just focusing on watching the ball and trying to hit it as hard as I can."His numbers paint a very modern picture. While Allen averages a touch over 48 in T20s, he hovers around 25 in List A cricket and under 20 in limited first-class opportunities since making his debut in 2018. This month he was signed by Virat Kohli's Royal Challengers Bangalore as a replacement for Australia's Josh Philippe. At a shade under $40,000 his contract will not put him in the millionaire's club but it was still a stunning opportunity for a player yet to wear national colours at senior level.Adam Milne will be more familiar to fans, having played 61 times for his country across the white ball formats.Milne, 28, made his debut for the Black Caps in 2010 as a teenage tearaway but the rigours of flat-out fast bowling on a slight frame have meant that injury has been a constant companion.Of late Milne has become a specialist T20 bowler, turning in consistent performances for the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash. He has a $670,000 contract with the Mumbai Indians for the upcoming IPL and has been training with Central Districts since leaving managed isolation.Six regulars, including Kane Williamson are missing. He is joined on the sidelines for this series by Mitchell Santner, Kyle Jamieson, Jimmy Neesham, Tim Seifert and Trent Boult.Devon Conway will have the added responsibility of taking the gloves, while Will Young has been included as a top order option.Speedster Lockie Ferguson has recovered from a stress fracture and returns."It's certainly been a season like no other and once again we've had to be pragmatic in our approach," selector Gavin Larsen said."The six guys who will miss this series are incumbents in our T20 side and the decision to give them some time at home with family before they embark on a long stint in India was principally made with their welfare in mind."We're also very aware of the need to give others opportunities in a World Cup year."NZ squad to face Bangladesh: Tim Southee (c), Martin Guptill, Finn Allen, Devon Conway, Will Young, Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Daryl Mitchell, Adam Milne, Lockie Ferguson, Ish Sodhi, Todd Astle, Hamish Bennett.text by Dylan Cleaver, NZ Herald

"I certainly want to win this World Cup, but I can live with myself if we don’t," said Jimmy Neesham a few weeks before that famous final. One of the funniest and sharpest minds in cricket, he was also beautifully honest about his perfection and the unhappiness he had put himself through. "It started a downward spiral for me where my expectations were so far beyond reasonable that it wasn't possible for me to have a good day." One of the most perceptive conversations we've had on The Final Word, during a key few weeks in cricket history. However, he went from being a regular member of the team and playing in the IPL. The Women’s World Cup has kicked off in earnest and we dedicate the first ten minutes to wrong’uns: their violence, their humiliation, and how they look easy to play (for retired third-graders watching on TV). Mankads have also come up again – so we respond in-kind with side-mouthed, black and white analysis because, as we all know, “it’s in the laws”. New Zealand cruised against Sri Lanka, though it didn’t compare to their delectable dispatching of Thailand in a warm-up, which was followed by a coaching session. As we’ve always said, Jesus was the ultimate Alpha. The Men’s Team is in South Africa, and saw Ashton Agar deliver a tangible, substantial, meaningful, game-influencing contribution – thus making good on his unrivalled potential. Which is good for a top 5 draft prospect. South Africa then won the second fixture with a weird score. At least Alex Carey got a hit.The height-based selection of Kyle Jamieson proved a masterstroke as New Zealand destroyed India, which begs the question: can Kohli do it on a rainy day in … Wellington? Hashtag KohliWe then speak with the wonderfully normal Jimmy Neesham in a truly refreshing conversation, hours after he’d spent 155 overs in the dirt for Wellington. We covered the World Cup, Twitter philosophies, retirement, finding himself, working in marketing, Canadian circuits, the pronunciation of Marnus Labuschagne and US Border Security drilling holes in his bat to search for drugs.#AskTGC delved into dating dynamics in the United States, Space Jam, owning one’s virginity, a ten-year old decimating the opposition, and parallels between grade cricket and the military. We don’t do it all for Budgy Smuggler, but we do a large amount of it for them. Their three best seamers were out injured. The fourth shouldn't have played, but did, battling illness. Their best – and only – spinner was ruled out minutes before the first ball. And yet, the Black Caps bowlers have conjured up a remarkable victory over India to seal a similarly surprising series win.In what has been a tour of improbable events, add another unexpected outcome onto the pile, as the Black Caps defended 273-8 to claim a 22-run victory and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the best-of-three series. To defend that total at Eden Park is impressive. To do it against a superb Indian batting lineup, even more so. And to do it given the situation they were in – and the mess they had inherited from the Twenty20 series – well, that takes some doing.Coming into the series with the Black Caps having lost eight straight matches in all formats, few would have picked that to change against a strong Indian side; one coming off ODI series wins over the West Indies and Australia, and that had claimed the last three ODI series against New Zealand.Additionally, the Black Caps' lineup was far from full-strength – Trent Boult, Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson were still sidelined, Kane Williamson was injured, Scott Kuggeleijn was sick, Ish Sodhi had joined New Zealand A, and Mitchell Santner was a late scratch, ruled out due to illness. It left the Black Caps with a No 3 playing his second ODI, a No 8 who is usually a specialist batsman, a fast bowler on debut, two seamers who had been smashed in Hamilton, and no specialist spinners. So, when they had collapsed to 197-8 batting first, with eight overs remaining, it wasn't a stretch to assume the series was headed to a decider. But, when Ross Taylor and Kyle Jamieson added 76 for the ninth wicket, a defendable total had been attained, and the improbable was about to take place.Taylor's unbeaten 73 was valuable, but in fairness, he needed to make up for earlier mistakes, after being involved in two runouts which had kick-started the Black Caps' collapse. The hosts had looked superbly set at 157-2 through 29 overs, largely thanks to Martin Guptill breaking his ODI drought with an excellent run-a-ball 79. He looked likely for a century, only for Taylor to call him through for a disastrous quick single attempt, and then do the same to Jimmy Neesham five overs later.Add in the dismissals of Tom Latham (trapped lbw sweeping), Colin de Grandhomme (slogging wildly), Mark Chapman (caught and bowled) and Tim Southee (see: de Grandhomme, Colin), and a terrible total looked on the cards.Instead, Taylor stuck around, moving into the top 25 all-time ODI runscorers as he kept the Black Caps alive, while Jamieson bashed 25 not out off 24 balls to make a memorable start to his international debut. It got better, though – with Jamieson playing a crucial role as the Black Caps bowlers produced their best performance of the summer.Jamieson's wicket of Prithvi Shaw, in his first over, was part of a brilliant – and rather unexpected – effort from the second-string Black Caps seamers. After leaking 16 runs from his first eight balls, Hamish Bennett bounced back to remove Mayank Agarwal, while Southee battled through illness to claim the biggest scalp of them all – Virat Kohli, bowled, for 15.It was questionable whether the sick Southee would even play tonight, but instead he got through 10 overs within the first half of the Indian innings, getting mass appreciation from his teammates as he walked off the park with 2-41.With only five specialist bowlers available, stand-in skipper Latham did well to keep his best bowlers charging in when he felt India were vulnerable, with de Grandhomme removing KL Rahul, and Southee luring Kedar Jadhav into a flayed drive, straight to cover.Shreyas Iyer loomed as the danger man, but a ball after bringing up a smooth 50, he needlessly took a wild swipe at Bennett, getting a thick edge through to Latham. The match looked over, but there was a twist – with the...

Radio Sport's Top 15 Sporting Moments returns for 2019 as Jason Pine counts down the biggest sports stories of the year. This is number one. The biggest sporting moment and story on the Radio Sport Mornings show for 2019.Not much need be said, as many Kiwis will long remember that fateful day in July. The Blackcaps had astonishingly made the Cricket World Cup Final after a dramatic semifinal win over India.Looking to rectify the heartbreak of losing to Australia four years earlier, many favoured their opponents - England.New Zealand would post 241 as the target, before putting England under pressure late in their chance.A number of "key" moments very late in the game would prove disastrous to the Blackcaps - including a botched catch on the boundary by Trent Boult and an overthrow which hit Ben Stokes, run away for four.In the end, England reached the Blackcaps total, but could go no further.A Super Over was needed, with many not knowing the finer details of the rules. Should the Super Over be tied, the team who scored the most boundaries during the match, would be crowned the winner.England went first, hitting 15 off their six deliverers. The Blackcaps sent out Martin Guptill and Jimmy Neesham. Needing two runs off the final delivery, Guptill's shot didn't get enough power, and as they scampered back for run number two, he was run out by England wicket keeper Jos Buttler. The Super Over was tied, but England had won the World Cup.It will long be remembered as one of the most agonising and heartbreaking losses in New Zealand sport, and perhaps cricket history.Nothing ignited the Radio Sport audience in 2019 like that final. It was talked about for weeks, months, and will be talked about for years to come.It is the number one sporting moment of 2019.

The recurring phenomenon haunting bowlers at this World Cup struck again this morning.David Warner was facing Jasprit Bumrah in the second over of the Aussie innings as Aaron Finch and Co. tried unsuccessfully to chase down 353 for victory. Warner inside edged a delivery that deflected back onto his stumps but the bails didn't move. It's the fifth time in the tournament the ball has struck the stumps but the bails have stayed put.The bails at the Cricket World Cup do not want to be disturbed. Photo / Sky TV"This is ridiculous … that has hit the stumps hard," ex-England captain Michael Vaughan said in commentary as other current and former players weighed in on social media.Black Caps star Jimmy Neesham wrote on Twitter: "I understand that the electronics in the stumps and the bails make them heavier. Why can't the groove the bails sit in just be made shallower? Won't that fix the problem?"The general consensus is the zing bails — which flash red when knocked out of their grooves — are heavier than normal bails so are harder to dislodge.
