Born and raised in Niagara Falls Ontario, Darla hung onto silver linings as a way of life as a little girl. She grew up fast and went onto Mcmaster University for Health Science followed by a career as a behaviour support specialist for individuals residing in a home living with Autism and dual diagnosis for 12 years. She was then accepted into a private paramedic program. Motivationally spoke in elementary schools, troubled youth and University pre-med students. A creative soul she writes poetry and wrote wellness articles for a local magazine. Currently, she has relocated to Nova Scotia and works for the Department of Justice, helping victims and their families navigate through the criminal court processes while providing support in court for victims of crime. Recently she received a promotion and now works in a specialized court for victims of Domestic Violence. At age 40 she met the love of her life. At age 43 pregnant was the last thing she thought she would be, but God is the best of planners and the disposer of all affairs. She is a Mother, and suddenly every word and credential that came before this seems to pale in comparison now. She is a Mother. Darla's episode is one for the books! Darla shares her story medicine with us from her maiden, to mother, and the deep loss, the death of the crone and matriarch of her & her husband's family, while Darla was pregnant with her first son Mahdi. Darla shares with us the journey she took to Lebanon to bury her mother in law while 7 months pregnant, Darla shares her pregnancy outside the system, her beautiful and intense birth with companion Kasia Diana, and losing her eyesight leading up to the birth of her Mahdi. This episode is the poetry of Life. Birth, Death & Love. It's also key to note, Darla did not touch on this in episode but worth noting, Madhi was born “small” 5.5 pounds full term, I guess after speaking with family Darla and Abe found out that many of Abe's family members children were all born around 5 pounds , and all grew into strong, large men! On October 24th 1901 schoolteacher Annie Edson Taylor celebrated her 63rd birthday by becoming the first person to survive going over Niagara Falls in a barrel, yes, OVER NIAGARA FALLS IN A BARREL! Why? Was she bored? Was she a natural born daredevil? Was she insane? I don't know, but I know someone who will know!! Patrick Sirianni is a native of Niagara Falls Ontario and has become quite the historian of this amazing region, as well as being the official Town Crier of Niagara Falls. He also runs the amazing Facebook group Niagara History and Trivia (all lovers of history need to join this group!!) This is an interesting and inspirational episode with my good friend Jeremy Elliott and his godson William. It is a unique tale of how a family bond, love of sports, and a mentoring mindset, made a positive difference in the life of an individual with FASD. Jeremy is a martial arts champion and owns United Family Marshal Arts in Niagara Falls (Ontario, Canada). He is also a pro wrestler. In fact, Pro Wrestling Insider has listed him as one of the Top 500. We talk about Jeremy's journey growing up with a single mom who inspired him to follow his dreams and in turn help others. We talk about his success in and outside of the ring, including how he has advocated and supported William throughout the years and his new focus: to raise broader FASD awareness using red wrestling boots and launching the Embrace our Journey campaign. William shares his perspective on growing up with FASD and how sports have helped him. Just as Jeremy was inspired by the Karate Kid, William has his own inspiration for finding his first passion (football) after a chance meeting with Jamal Campbell. He told him, “I'm going to be a lineman-like you.” This is a great story of overcoming odds and dedication to passion. To how finding and nurturing strengths can help individuals with FASD grow and thrive. This is a journey of understanding, compassion, resilience, and embracing the journey. I can't wait to see where these two go next. I may not be on the road with them, but I will be getting the t-shirt. If you want to follow them, or get the t-shirt, check out the Show Notes for a link to our blog. Sal and Bob visit Ruth's Chris Steak House in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada for a special Valentine's Day episode. The One Hit Wonder is Nena's 99 Luftballons. Both Sal and Bob agree that Ruth's Chris is a great place to be, even though they're single and pathetic. Sal talks about his favorite movies. Both guys talk about problems crossing the Canadian border and feeling guilty. Both guys have fond remembrances about Frankenmuth, Michigan, and eating too much taffy. The guys agree that the Ray Liotta's Chantix commercials are creepy. And the My Pillow guy is skeevy, and those commercials are unsettling. Sal jokes about the three years it took to develop the idiotic My Pillow. Sal and Bob do their “Mickey Yelling at Rocky” scene. The guys read the world's cheesiest Valentine's Day jokes. Sal winds up the episode reporting that the Necco Valentines Day message hearts will not be available in 2019 and his plan to take advantage of it. Another fun episode.
