Some 5,000 bodies have been found at the foot of Niagara Falls... that's a lot of death! While Niagara Falls have always been viewed as this perfect example of the force and strength of mother nature, still, some people tested their luck by venturing a bit too close to the falls, or in some cases, voluntarily rolling in barrels over the edge. We look at some of the wildest daredevils to take on the falls, like Sam Patch, the "Yankee Leaper", a school teacher named Annie Edson Taylor and her cat, and circus professional Bobby Leach, whose biggest threat ended up being a banana peel. While these three willingly fell over the falls, there are numerous others who have stories to tell - famed tightrope walkers and unlucky fishermen. The chances of survival are slim, and so next week we come back again to talk about the hauntings and spirits who roam the Niagara Falls area. Have any ghost stories of your own? On October 24th 1901 schoolteacher Annie Edson Taylor celebrated her 63rd birthday by becoming the first person to survive going over Niagara Falls in a barrel, yes, OVER NIAGARA FALLS IN A BARREL! Why? Was she bored? Was she a natural born daredevil? Was she insane? I don't know, but I know someone who will know!! Patrick Sirianni is a native of Niagara Falls Ontario and has become quite the historian of this amazing region, as well as being the official Town Crier of Niagara Falls. He also runs the amazing Facebook group Niagara History and Trivia (all lovers of history need to join this group!!) Patrick joins us for the first, but defiantly not the last time to discuss this amazing woman, why she did what she did, and how her stunt led to so many copycats, not always as successful. So kick back, enjoy and please rate and share the show..let's keep the audience growing. Thank you all And hey, check out our Merch Store for Shirts.

Annie Edson Taylor was born into a family with 8 kids. Her father was a flour mill owner. He passed away when the girl was 12, but he left enough money for his family to have a comfortable living. So, when Annie decided to build a schoolteacher career, there was nothing to prevent her from doing it. The woman spent decades of her life in all kinds of teaching jobs and moving between different places. All that traveling left her with almost no money and very few belongings. She needed to work out a way to bolster her bank account for when she wouldn't be able to work anymore. One day, she was reading a newspaper article about the daredevils who had been riding out the dangerous rapids at the bottom of Niagara Falls. An idea occurred to her. "Hmm..." she thought. "Why don't I do better and actually plunge over the waterfall? If I survive, I'll become famous!" In truth, Annie had no doubt she would get out of this adventure alive. She was an exceptionally determined and upbeat woman. That's why she immediately got down to work, putting her plan into action... Since 1850, more than 5,000 people have gone over Niagara Falls, either intentionally (as stunts or suicide attempts) or accidentally. The first recorded person to survive going over the falls was school teacher Annie Edson Taylor, who in 1901 successfully completed the stunt inside an oak barrel. In the following 121 years, thousands of people have been swept over the falls but only sixteen people have reportedly survived the feat. All instances of people having survived the trip over the falls have been over the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. Following the death of one daredevil in 1951, stunting at Niagara Falls has been illegal and subject to fines of up to $25,000 USD. Our theme song was written and performed by Anna Bosnick. This week the unexpected meets the obscure as we uncover several stories of wartime and daredevil history. First, we meet Sergeant Bill, the heroic Canadian goat of WW1 who saved the lives of three soldiers during battle. He suffered from trench foot, shrapnel, shell shock, and was gassed with the allied soldiers fighting at Ypres. He survived four and a half years at war, returning to Canada a hero. Next, we head to Niagara Falls and meet Lagara the cat, the first creature to survive a barrel ride over Horseshoe Falls. Along the way we visit several famous daredevils, including Annie Edson Taylor, the first person over the falls. We meet Charles Blondin the famous French funambulist who braved the high wire over the Niagara River 300 times. We visit Charles Stevens, the demon barber of Bedminster, and Bobby Leech, famous English daredevil whose death was as strange as his life. Come meet some of history's boldest animals and a group of wonderful weirdos who dared so much that we can't stop talking about them a century and a half later.
This episode is a follow-up to episode 4, the story of Annie Edson Taylor, so we recommend listening to that first!
It's Charlotte's turn to take the lead, and in this episode, she talks about the life Annie Edson Taylor (1838-1921), an American schoolteacher who became the first person to survive a trip over Niagara Falls in a barrel. Yes, a barrel. Find the show notes, links, resources and more for all episodes at learnaboutpod.com.

Who dreamt up the stunt of going over Niagara Falls in a barrel? Through the 1800s, countless daredevils and would-be heroes attempted all sorts of stunts at the Falls and in the rapids below. But the first to go over the Falls—and survive—did not fit the usual mold of a thrill-seeking daredevil. She was a 63-year-old music teacher named Annie Edson Taylor, who quickly became a national celebrity.
Annie Edson Taylor was the first person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel. Taylor’s whole barrel trip was part of a much bigger story of daredevils at this natural wonder, which is tied to its industrialization and commercialization.
