Daniel R. Diodati, a fourth generation Hillie, is competing with Veronica A. Rodriguez, also a Haverhill native, to represent Ward 2 on the Haverhill City Council in January. The winner replaces Katrina Hobbs Everett who chose not to run again.Diodati manages Berkshire Hathaway real estate offices in Haverhill. Rodriquez works for the Lawrence office of the state Department of Children and Families. Each recently appeared on WHAV's morning show and answered six questions on challenging issues in the city. Here are their answers in the order their names appear on the ballot. Why do you want to serve on City Council?“With the skills that I have I really feel like I can contribute and I thought it was time to throw my hat in the ring. The reason is civic engagement being so low, it was time for someone like myself to step up and try to make a difference.” Diodati said.“I love Haverhill first of all and, lately, it's been in the news for some of the wrong things. I don't think you can complain if you don't try to make a difference so that's why I want to serve,” Rodriguez said. There is a perception Haverhill is building too much housing. Do you agree?“I do think there could be a smarter way to develop residential housing if we really look at homeownership. Homeownership is super, super important in any community,” Diodati said.“I think that we should fix the places that we have that are abandoned first. I think we need to get more creative because all that housing is going to bring a lot traffic, it is going to bring other problems. So, we need to maybe think outside of the box to help because we do have a housing crisis,” Rodriguez said. What can the City Council do to promote more affordable housing?“Between homeownership, development of new construction that is based on owner-occupied projects, mixed in with ADU (accessory dwelling unit) use, I think it is a great start. And, things are in motion to do that. I just hope to simplify things and make it a little bit better,” Diodati said.“We do have a housing trust but there's no money in it. I think maybe if some of these new developments, we should maybe make them pay into that so we do have some funds so we can think of some projects we can do for affordable housing,” Rodriguez said. The death of Francis P. Gigliotti II while in police custody and the death of Officer Katelyn M. Tully have left the public looking for answers, especially in light of changes at the top of the police department. Do you think the public has the right to know more and how quickly and what types of information do you think is properly withheld?“Just to have a little bit more transparency in the process and how it is messaged to the public whether it be through an actually press conference, not necessarily through just making social media posts, etc. If there is no news to report, then report that there is no news to report,” Diodati said.“I think they did a good job informing the public. They put it out there right away. I do think that out of respect for her family, the cause of death and those types of things should be kept private just out of respect. I think they should be transparent. The public is what put them in. We pay for their jobs so we definitely need to know what's going on. We need to know,” Rodriguez said.Do you believe residential property taxes are too low, too high or about right?“Too high. Because mindset is everything to me. And I do think we act upon on our thoughts. As long as we are controlling in our head that taxes are too high, we are going to work to keep them as low as possible,” Diodati said.“When I am paying them, I think they are too high but when I compare them to other cities, they're not so high.” Rodriguez said. What specifSupport the show

In this episode, I chat with Two Friends Books owners Monica Diodati and Rachel Stuckey-Slaton about Bentonville, Arkansas, local authors, books they love, and what they learned about bookselling during the pandemic. After spending too much time lamenting the lack of an independent bookstore in Bentonville, friends Monica Diodati and Rachel Stuckey-Slaton resolved to launch their own. In 2018, their popup bookshop appeared at local coffee shops in the area until they moved into their very own brick and mortar shop at 8th Street Market in Downtown Bentonville. Monica and Rachel curate a selection of books from authors and publishers they love passing on to their customers. At Two Friends Books, customers can also enjoy a book with a glass of wine, beer, or coffee. The bookshop carries natural and organic wines, Airship coffee, a rotating selection of beers, and locally made baked goods. Two Friends BooksNora Goes Off Script, Annabel MonaghanA Lady's Guide to Fortune Hunting, Sophie IrwinThe Dead Romantics, Ashley PostonBraiding Sweetgrass, Robin Wall KimmererOzark Dogs, Eli CranorBooks by Donna TartBooks by Miriam ToewsOur Share of Night, Mariana EnriquezBooks by Lisa Kleypas Support the showThe Bookshop PodcastMandy Jackson-BeverlySocial Media Links

He has been unapologetic in his skepticism of the effectiveness of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and the science behind them.He also found himself in hot water more than once for trolling Niagara Region Coun. Laura Ip of St. Catharines, using crude, hateful terms in the process. In late March, Fannon uploaded a podcast on streaming service BitChute titled “Radical Feminist Pigs and My Twitter Rage and Hate.” For much of the show, he insulted and degraded Ip.Fannon spent most of the 39-minute video attacking Ip for what he sees as disrespectful Tweets about religion, at one point calling her a “f--ing bigot pig.” He also said he “hates feminists.” During the podcast Fannon also called Ip a “c--t.”This past weekend, Fannon was at it again. He retweeted a three-year-old post from Ip criticizing controversial Canadian clinical psychologist Jordan Peterson. That roused the keyboard warriors who worship Peterson and harass her.Ip was already under attack by social media trolls for speaking her mind, an ongoing issue in her first-term on council. By Monday, she had enough and called police about some of the abuse which had become threatening.St. Catharines city Coun. Karrie Porter took to Twitter and defended Ip Wednesday after word of the mayors' planned appearances became public. In an interview Thursday, Porter, who has also been troubled by trolls, questioned why the mayors would appear with Fannon and amplify his platform — especially after Fannon's treatment of a regional council colleague.“If you are at work, and you work on a team, and then a couple of your teammates, who you might not always agree with, decide to go on a podcast with someone who has said vile things about you and your family, I'm left to wonder why?“Is it supposed to send a message? The message I'm receiving is that they are all right with it.”Region Chair Jim Bradley has gone on the record several times this term to express his expectation that councillors will conduct themselves in ways consistent with their code of conduct.“It is important that councillors take into account the ramifications of any actions they take or statements they make,” he said. Both Bylsma and Diodati defended their decisions to appear on Fannon's show.“Dave Bylsma answers for Dave Bylsma,” he said. “Jim Fannon is not the first media person or show host that I disagree with. He won't be the last.”Diodati has been on Fannon's show before, to discuss his recovery from cancer. That segment was a much more conventional interview that had none of Fannon's trademark rants.Diodati asked not to be judged until people hear the coming interview.“My idea is I want to send a message and talk about diversity,” Diodati said. “COVID has not brought out the best in people, and their feelings have been amplified — anxiety, anger, depression.“My thinking is that going on his show is not an endorsement. I don't see it that way at all. If someone else thinks that, I respect that, but we will have to agree to disagree.“I want to shine light in the darkest corners, and if that involves me under challenging discussions, so be it.“We have lots of keyboard critics, and it comes with the job, but nobody should make assumptions about what my motives are.”In late August of 2020, Diodati launched a campaign against online harassment and hate.At the time, Diodati said he's creating a social media neutral zone, echoing comments made at the time by Ip and others about online attacks. In an interview at the time, Diodati said he will no longer allow people to post “hurtful, hateful, vengeful and venomous” comments on his social media pages.“If other people want to allow it on theirs, that's their business. But I'm saying publicly, upfront, think before you hit the send button because I will delete your comments and I will block you.”Fannon, for his part, said his comments about Ip in the spring were a throwaway during the broadcast.“I had her on my radio show. I took an instant liking to her. I loved that she is intelligent and well-spoken, but I'm not a lefty anymore, and I don't believe the things I used to believe.”On Thursday night, Fannon was back online attacking Ip, during which he called her “a dumb f--king c--t” and then said “it's funny.”Bill SawchukBill Sawchuk is a St. Catharines-based reporter with the Standard.
