Whether people like comic books, comic book movies, or comic book characters, we all share a deep passion for tales of heroism that makes the world a better place. That's probably why comic book store Mike (played by Jesse Metcalfe of "Desperate Housewives") and new-kid-in-town Brandon (newcomer Micah Giovanni) take such a liking to each other. From writer/director Jonathan L. Bowen, "The Comic Shop" co-stars Tristan Mays ("MacGyver") as Mike's loyal employee Alex, who may have to take a job at a rival store when her hours get cut; Trevor Einhorn ("The Magicians", "Mad Men") as the spoiled and scheming rival store owner; and with cameos from Eric Roberts and Scott "Carrot Top" Thompson. Bowen's story frames the emotional journey of the characters against the backdrop of their love for indie comics and the unique community of creators and fans who often struggle to find a place in a market dominated by Marvel and DC. Shot on location in Las Vegas, "The Comic Shop" is a slice-of-life love letter to comic fans that general audiences will easily relate to. "The Comic Shop" reminds us that the best sources of inspiration are those around us who are willing to risk it all to help us find our way.

In this exclusive interview, we sit down with director Jonathan L. Bowen to discuss his heartfelt film, The Comic Shop. Whether you're a comic book fan or simply someone who loves a good story about heroism, Bowen's film captures the power of passion, perseverance, and the unexpected bonds that form in the most unlikely of circumstances. The Comic Shop follows Mike (Jesse Metcalfe) as he faces the tough reality of keeping his comic book store afloat, and Brandon (Micah Giovanni), a newcomer who forms a friendship with Mike while grappling with his own struggles at home. Together, they navigate the challenges of life, love, and comic books, with some inspiring moments along the way. Join us as Bowen shares insights into the film's emotional journey, the characters' growth, and the themes of community, passion, and the comic book culture that inspired the story. We also dive into Bowen's own upbringing and what shaped his love for storytelling, as well as the films and experiences that influenced his creative vision for The Comic Shop. The film also stars Tristan Mays, Trevor Einhorn, and features cameos from Eric Roberts and Scott “Carrot Top” Thompson. Hi, everybody. George is joined by Mike Atchison, the host of Mike's Comic Shop Roadshow and cohost of Campus Comics Cast. Mike tells us about his day job and how it provides the opportunity to travel to the comic shops from around the world that he features on his Roadshow podcast. Plus, we talk about some of the touristy things he does. In addition to showcasing comic shops on his show, Mike asks the shop owners to recommend a book for him to purchase and review with guests in the second part of each episode. Of course George had to turn the tables and ask Mike to recommend a book for the second part of this episode and that book is the recent post-Krakoan age X-Men #1 (that part of the conversation begins at 1:09:54). As fate would have it, Mike had recorded an episode with our friend Eric of Longbox Review not long before he spoke to George. This episode (Ep.435) was recorded at Gotham City Limit comic shop with Ben Kingsbury (the owner!). Ben and Badr chop it up about their predictions for SDCC 2024, and discuss Marvel's big events (Blood Hunt & The Ultimate Universe) vs DC's big events (Absolute Universe & All-In initiative). They also talk about what it takes to run a successful comic shop, the oversaturation of variant covers in the market, and lessons learned from being a shop owner. Ben also shares his favorite comics of the year, sleeper titles of 2024, and what new comics coming out later this year that he's most excited about. In this "one shot" episode (a name I just made up where we examine a topic separate from our current season) we take a break from Catwoman to discuss the topic of "shelf appeal." This means roughly the way comics look on the shelves of comic shops. We bring on former guest Casey Bruce, co-owner of Danger Room comics in Olympia, Washington to talk about the challenges facing shop owners when it comes to making their product look appealing to customers. There's packaging, what editions are available, the impact of movies and television shows, how popular the characters are, and how long the title has been running. Kevin has a lot of hot takes in this ep! Back to Catwoman next week!__ SHOW INFORMATION  Twitter: @ScrewItComics Instagram: @ScrewItComics  Email: ScrewItComics@gmail.com  Subscribe: Apple Podcasts  Subscribe: Spotify
