Welcome to the Monday Breakfast show for Monday the 12th of August, 2024. On Monday of last week Homelessness Australia released its Child Homelessness Snapshot, illuminating the state of the growing crisis in this continent. To help us dissect the snapshot's results, Rob spoke with CEO of Homelessness Australia, Kate Colvin. New data released by the Productivity Commission reveals the rate of Indigenous children in out-of-home care in so-called Victoria rose from 102.2 children per 1,000 to 102.9 per 1,000 in the 12 months leading up to the end of the 2023 financial year. This represents 10 percent of Indigenous children in so-called Victoria and is nearly double the national average; Indigenous children in 'Victoria' are 22 times more likely to be in out-of-home care than non-Indigenous children. To learn more about the conditions creating this crisis as well as the Productivity Commission's findings, we heard from Yoorrook Justice Commission's Deputy Chair and Commissioner Sue-Ann Hunter. Listeners are encouraged to read the recommendations made by the Yoorrook Justice Commission and to make submissions (click here). On Friday the 9th of August the NSW Labor Party delayed hearing amendments to Equality legislation which would protect LGBTQI+ students in the state until October. The move came days before the bill was set to lapse after not being heard in Parliament. To find out more about the bill and its amendments, Rob interviewed Quay Quay of Pride in Protest, an activist collective who campaign for social justice in the Queer community and beyond. To keep up to date with what Pride in Protest is doing, follow their Instagram.  On Tuesday the 6th of August around 60 asylum seekers launched a 24/7 protest outside incoming Immigration Minister Tony Burke's office in protest of the estimated 10,000 asylum seekers who are victims of the failed fast track system, which has left people stuck for up to 12 years as they wait on bridging or expired visas. To get an update on the protest, Rob spoke with Thamilselvan Selvakumar who is on the ground outside Tony Burke's office. Thamilselvan is a Sri Lankan Eelam Tamil Refugee who has been in limbo for 12 years on a bridging visa.  Songs played: 'Tied Through Time' - Outright'Tend The Garden' - Gang of Youths 'Don't Let The Kids Win' - Julia Jacklin'We Have Survived' - No Fixed Address

Send me a messageToday's guest is the iconic, the indomitable and the insatiable Bob Carr. Most will know Bob and be familiar with his political appointments and achievements - leader of the NSW Labor Opposition Party from 1988 until he and his party won government election in 1995, where he went on to win three further elections was Premier for ten years making him the longest continuously serving Premier in NSW's history. He then served as the Australian Foreign Minster for 18 months from 2012-13 as part of the Gillard Government. In what now seems like a much more sane and reasonable period of politics, under Bob's leadership the NSW Labor Party did and delivered a lot - most famously the glorious Sydney 2000 Olympics, he introduced four unit English and history into the school curriculum and launched the NSW Premier's reading challenge, established Australia's first medically supervised heroin injection room in King's Cross, he reformed the corruption prone police force, and much more.On the environment front, Bob was a passionate and vital leader in protecting wild places - 350 national parks covering 1.2 million hectares of land were secured for all time during his premiership, and he introduced the world's first carbon trading scheme in 2003. We talk a little as well about how he played a key role in ending the capture and holding of wild dolphins in Dolphinariums in Australia in the 80s, and his deep respect for conservationists who press constantly for the preservation and return of our wild places, all for no personal gain.I met Bob after an introduction when he was an Industry Professor of Business and Climate Change at the University of Technology Sydney and I was hosting an event to coincide with World Environment Day in 2019. That initial meeting was entirely surreal and my colleagues were frankly stunned that of all the people working in that organisation I'd be the person chaperoning Bob through the office. From that initial meeting though Bob has been nothing but humble, curious and gracious in how he has approached and treated me, something I can still barely believe - especially when I go to his office and it is chock full of photos of him with the likes of Bill Clinton and Joe Biden, Shinzo Abe and Vladimir Putin. For him to happily catch up a few times a year for five years and now agree to helping me starting this podcast and Finding Nature more broadly, I'm really enormously grateful and I think it says a lot about the person he is and remains to be after such a remarkable and prominent career but also through a period of personal tragedy.Personally I have learnt a lot from Bob, and this conversation feels like it barely scratches the surface in working through his significant body of achievements and service through the political and industry appointments he's held. This conversation I think is about the gifts of reflection and taking time to not only look back on our lives, but also the gems history can offer if we take the time to understand the stories and events that have created today, and then attempt to use the lessons of the past as a compass to help guide us through the tumult of the present and whatever the future holds. For the sustainability practitioners out there, I think there are plenty of lessons here regarding understanding how business and politics have ended up preoccupied and captured by the interests of what are not natural nor long term, that reform and change are very difficult but possible through hardship and struggle, and the necessity for pragmatism and opportunism which may always be available if we take the time to notice it.I Thanks for listening. Ben Davison takes a look at Angus Taylor's dreadful performance on Insiders and the disproportionate focus on tax concessions for the wealthiest at a time when more people than ever are working multiple jobs and wages are making up less and less of our national income.  Unions keep raising these issues and reminding us that superannuation is for retirement, not tax evasion, and you can join your union at australianunions.org.au/wow Stuart Robert is the opposition spokesperson for superannuation but was to busy avoiding media scrutiny over his time as the minister responsible for Robodebt to get involved in the attacks on Labor's reforms. Ben looks at how the Robodebt royal commission has exposed the media's lack of focus on the material reality of millions of Australians and how that allowed a consequence free environment for the Morrison ministers. The NSW Labor Party is launching it's state election campaign in Hurstville TODAY and Mary Doyle launched her campaign for Aston on Saturday.  While neither story was covered on Insiders, Ben looks at why these are crucial campaigns and very winnable for Labor. More broadly Ben laments that the Insiders panel wants reform but remains addicted to the gotcha moments and feeding of the Murdoch/Stokes outrage machinery. Van and Ben discuss Dutton's Insiders interview which showed how little he's been prepared to change from the dark days of the Morrison government.  In addition to fantasies of improbable future wealth he rolled out religious culture wars as cover for bad corporate behaviour and fear mongering about Australian toddlers being secret terrorists. After a decade of "let it rip" ideology smashing labour markets the NSW Labor Party is promising to regulate the gig economy.  In what unions are calling a "win for workers and a level playing field for business" the reforms will see workers rights established regardless of the label stuck on the worker.  Unions have been working across state and commonwealth jurisdictions to ensure workers get their rights whether they are direct employees, contractors, labour hire, full time, part time or casual.  Join them at australianunions.org.au/wow Van gives an update on the destruction of Putin's bridge from Russia to Crimea and what it might mean for Putin's war. Michael is joined by John Della Bosca, former NSW Minister for Health and Minister for the Central Coast and general-secretary of the NSW Labor Party, to discuss his view on the real lessons that Labor should learn from the Upper Hunter by-election.   Mr Bella Bosca writes, ‘The first is for the NSW party. It is the easiest lesson of all. Learn how to put on a poker face.  Before the by-election in the state seat, the National Party vote had softened because the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers had pulled votes away from a weak incumbent MP.   ‘But Upper Hunter has been held by the National/Country Party for 99 years. Most of the larger towns in Upper Hunter have voted majority conservative since World War II and the electoral heart of the seat is Scone, which historically makes Mosman, or Vaucluse, look like Leninist enclaves. In other words, short of the National Party candidate forgetting to nominate, Labor was never in the hunt in Upper Hunter.’   ‘The folk wisdom that gave the false hope of a Labor victory some momentum was that there is always a swing against the government in a by-election. This is not necessarily true.’ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's the final week of Election 2019 and Labor is still in the best position to win the election. We're not saying anything controversial here: Labor has been ahead in the polls for almost three years, the Liberal–National Party is divided and has been an omnishamble in government, and is lacking meaningful policy offerings to the public. And if it's not the polls, have a look at the betting markets: Labor is now paying Winx-like odds to win on Saturday night [and please, gamble responsibly; and vote responsibly too].Of course, anything can still happen in this final week of the campaign. Will the Murdoch empire manufacture some kind of scandal that is just believable enough to throw Labor completely off balance? Bring it on Rupert, it probably won't make too much difference. Using Bill Shorten’s mother to attack Bill Shorten was a low-road strategy, but we have to remember: when the conservatives can't win fair, they use every tactic available to them, legal or not.“Deserving” doesn't have a part to play in politics. If election results were based on worthiness, the LNP would not win one seat: it has been that bad as a government, even worse than the 2011 version of the NSW Labor Party – that was bad but this is worse. We still feel there's a re-alignment that needs to take place for the conservatives, and a long stint in opposition for some time should give them enough time to sort out the difference between the moderates and the Christian right, and present a fresh alternative to the electorate.Shock election results are quite rare in federal politics: the 2016 one-seat victory by Malcolm Turnbull was a surprise, but we have to go back to 1993 to find the last genuine boilover. Will there be a boilover and sweet surprises for Scott Morrison on Saturday? Unlikely. It's going to be a night for the red-shirts.
