While most political junkies have their eyes on DC in the wake of Donald Trump's successful bid to return to the White House, we're looking south, where Los Angeles voters delivered a seismic shift to the region's politics, passing Measure G, which expands the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors from five members to nine, and Charter Amendment DD, which creates an independent redistricting commission for the city. Support for reform measures exploded after the 2022 release of "The Tape," a secret recording of council members Nury Martinez, Gil Cedillo and Kevin de Leon and LA County Labor Fed President Ron Herrera making racist and derisive comments about their colleagues and constituents, and planning a gerrymander of Nithya Raman's district in order to oust her. Two years after the release of the tape, de Leon was the only one of the four still in place, and on November 5, District 14 voters handed the former state senator his walking papers in favor of DSA candidate Ysabel Jurado, giving the Democratic Socialists a four seat bloc on the city council. We asked political consultant and California Target Book co-editor Robb Korinke to walk us through what just happened and what it all means.Plus: Who Had the Worst Week in California Politics?2:01 Measure G4:37 County Executive5:52 What will the new districts look like?9:30 Charter Amendment DD11:48 KDL15:38 Nithya Raman16:15 Adrin Nazarian17:02 George Gascon19:20 Turnout23:00 Incumbency25:24 #WWCAWant to support the Capitol Weekly Podcast? It's been a year since one of the biggest political scandals in its history rocked the Los Angeles City Council. In October 2022, a secret audio recording of three Latino council members and a labor leader was leaked to the public. Their conversation about redrawing council district maps included racist comments about fellow council members, their families, the Black community and indigenous Mexicans. Council president Nury Martinez's comments were some of the most shocking and led to her resignation. Martinez seemed to have disappeared until recently, when she agreed to an exclusive interview with LAist's Antonia Cerejido. That interview, as well the perspectives of other Angelenos close to the scandal, are featured on the podcast Imperfect Paradise. The California Report Magazine's Sasha Khokha sits down with Cerejido, the host of the series "Nury and the Secret Tapes," to find out what's changed a year after the scandal broke.
Daniel Guss comes on the show to talk about the Rick Jacobs case. Nury Martinez is hiding out in Arizona. There is a Republican presidential debate tonight. A Hong Kong jeweler was robbed but went back to Hong Kong. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In the year since the L.A. City Council tape scandal, a lot has changed. Efforts are underway to reform the redistricting process. Nury Martinez and Gil Cedillo are gone from the council. Only Kevin De León remains. Progressive shifts in the council are influencing its policies, and new elected members are working to forge a new way forward in L.A. "Sorry, Not Sorry!" That's essentially the message of Nury Martinez, Kevin de León and Gil Cedillo, who spent the past week on a faux apology tour, trying to rewrite the history of the racist Fed Tapes scandal, and portray themselves, ridiculously, as the victims. #164: Today, we're joined again by friend of the pod Antonia Cereijido, host of the LAist Studios podcast Imperfect Paradise, to talk about Part 3 of their latest series: “Nury & the Secret Tapes.” It's an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the L.A. City Council tape scandal that rocked Los Angeles, and became national news, a year ago. On the secretly recorded tapes, then-L.A. City Council President Nury Martinez, council members Gil Cedillo, Kevin De León and labor leader Ron Herrera talk candidly, making racist and demeaning comments about colleagues, Black political power, Indigenous people, and even a councilman's child. In the latest episode, Antonia presses Nury about the racist and hurtful things she said on the tapes. Voices heard in this episode: Nury Martinez, former L.A. City Council President; L.A. City Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson; Tanya K. Hernández, comparative race law expert at Fordham University School of Law; Manuel Pastor, professor of Sociology and American Studies & Ethnicity at USC.
Before the L.A. City Council tape scandal, Nury Martinez, the former council president, was known as a champion of working class immigrants. Hot on the heels of the Republican presidential debate in Simi Valley, all eyes turn to Anaheim, which is hosting the California Republican Convention. Among those attending is former President Donald J. Trump. In this episode taped before the news of California Sen. Dianne Feinstein death was announced, “Inside the Issues: The Podcast” hosts Alex Cohen and Sara Sadhwani break down the debate and name the winners: unfazed Trump and Gavin Newsom — and neither was at the Ronald Reagan Library. Then, the race for LA City Council District 14 is also heating up with a lot of candidates, including incumbent Councilmember Kevin de León. De León, who did not resign after the leaked City Hall tapes, recently announced he will seek reelection next year. And speaking of the tapes, Nury Martinez will tell her side of the story for the first time in a podcast with LAist.
#157: It's been almost one year since a secret recording of four powerful Latino leaders in Los Angeles leaked to the public, setting off one of the biggest political scandals in L.A. history. Then-City Council President Nury Martinez, Councilmembers Gil Cedillo and Kevin De León, and labor leader Ron Herrera were caught on tape making racist, demeaning comments about Indigenous people, Black Angelenos (including a city councilmember's child), and Black political power. And it was all in the context of a strategy session about advancing Latino power in the city. The tapes became national news, with many people — including President Joe Biden —calling for all the leaders to resign. Herrera and Martinez did. And now, for the first time since her resignation, we hear from Nury Martinez in an exclusive interview with LAist Studios. Our colleagues on the 'Imperfect Paradise' podcast team, including host Antonia Cereijido, challenged Martinez to account for the racist, hurtful things she said in that conversation. The team spoke with former and current councilmembers about their reaction to the tapes — including Mike Bonin who, along with his young Black son, was singled out in the conversation — and to scholars and indigenous rights activists about what the tapes revealed about long-simmering tensions within the city. In today's episode 'How To LA,' Antonia talks with Brian about the making of the podcast.
#144: Just a heads up there is some explicit language used towards the end of this episode. Please be advised. There have been MANY government scandals that have been exposed in our city. Just in the last year: Former LA Councilmember Mark Ridley Thomas was just sentenced to 42 months in prison plus 30-thousand in fines for corruption. Councilmember Curren Price was charged with multiple counts of embezzlement, perjury and conflict of interest earlier this summer. And last fall leaked racist tapes exposed councilwoman Nury Martinez, forcing her to resign. When corruption like this pops up - it sparks outrage. There are usually protests and officials are fired and sometimes arrested. It can all be super disheartening. So, what can we do? How do we ACTUALLY hold our local officials accountable? Today, we speak with LAist's Civics and Democracy reporter Brianna Lee, who recently wrote a guide on how to do just that. Guest: Brianna Lee, Engagement Producer, Civics and Democracy for LAist Read Brianna's guide on LAist here.

It's been an extraordinary week in Southern California politics, with the fourth City Council politician facing criminal charges in four years. Councilman Curren Price was charged earlier this week with 10 counts of embezzlement, perjury and conflict of interest. "Inside the Issues: The Podcast" hosts Alex Cohen and Sara Sadhwani break down what it means for folks in District 9. Plus, why now and why are other local politicians saddened by the situation? Plus, a look at the parallels with former President Donald Trump's indictment. And the connection to the Council District 6 election, which has candidates Marisa Alcaraz and Imelda Padilla, who is currently the environmental policy director and deputy chief of staff to Price, running the spot vacated by former LA City Council president Nury Martinez.
#112 On June 27, a special election will be held to choose the candidate who will replace former L.A. City Council President Nury Martinez. You might remember that she resigned in the wake of a scandal last fall, having been caught making racist ands other ugly comments during a group conversation that was secretly recorded and made public.Imelda Padilla and Marisa Alcaraz are both going after her seat in Council District 6, a 20-mile stretch of the city in the San Fernando Valley that includes neighborhoods like Sun Valley, Arleta, Van Nuys and Lake Balboa.Padilla and Alcaraz were both raised in the area, with similar backgrounds, but they took different career paths. In this episode, we find out who these two are and why you should care about the outcome of this race, even if you don't live or vote in CD 6. Guest: Frank Stoltze, LAist Civics & Democracy Correspondent For more, read Frank's article: The ‘Policy Nerd' Vs. The Grassroots Organizer In LA City Council Race To Replace Nury Martinez
Scott, Alissa, and Rachel talk about the CD 6 primary results, Mark Ridley-Thomas's conviction and where that leaves the people of CD 10, allegations of a toxic workplace in the City Controller's office, and the "New LA" of Karen Bass's first State of the City.
Today we're discussing the special election in District 6 for the Los Angeles City Council. Nury Martinez was pushed out of office after racist comments emerged in a secret audio file. We discuss mainstream media's interest in progressive electoralist elements, and how that may translate to Sacramento. Chaos irrupted at LA's City Council meeting on Tuesday, after audio leaked of councilmember Nury Martinez making racist remarks in a conversation last year with other council members and a labor leader. In the recording, first reported by the LA Times, among the things Martinez said, which also included disparaging comments about Jewish and Armenian people, was an offensive racial reference when speaking about a white councilman's black child. Plus, cholera outbreak, widespread hunger, and gang warfare, Haiti is a country in crisis. And, NASA's asteroid success. Guests: Axios' Russell Contreras and Miami Herald's Jacqueline Charles. Nury Martinez was president of the Los Angeles City Council until a leaked recording revealed her conspiring with fellow council members Gil Cedillo and Kevin de Léon and union leader Ron Herrera, in crude racist language, to disenfranchise Black citizens. As calls for their removal flashed from L.A. to the White House, we stare into the heart of the Democratic Party. Zo Rachel sits in for Bill Whittle this week, with Scott Ott and Stephen Green. Over the weekend audio clips were released that revealed the OVERT anti-Black racism of Los Angeles City Council members Nury Martinez, Kevin de Leon, and Gil Cedillo. All 3 of them must resign immediately or be removed. Another person involved, a local labor leader, has already done the right thing and stepped down. We have a lot to talk about here - because what their disgusting racism reveals, is that we have very narrow definitions of WHO is racist in this country. When most people think of racism they think of racist white people. Who are likely conservatives. And maybe in the Deep South. But that is a very narrow way to see racism in this country. Let's be clear - a lot of racism comes from those groups, but that's not all of it. These 3 city council members are prominent members of the Democratic Party. And they are Latinos. Let me unpack and explain it.
Russia launched its biggest attacks against Ukraine in months, targeting at least 14 regions – including civilian areas – on Monday. Vladimir Putin said the strikes were retaliation for a blast that damaged the only bridge connecting annexed Crimea to Russia.Nury Martinez stepped down as the L.A. City Council president, after she, two other council members, and a local labor leader were heard on a leaked recording making racist comments. Martinez is facing calls to resign, and the conversation has fueled concerns that some city leaders are trying to deplete the political power of Black Angelenos. And in headlines: Hurricane Julia made landfall on Sunday in Nicaragua, a union of railroad workers rejected a tentative agreement with freight carriers, and rapper Kanye West was locked out of Twitter and Instagram for antisemitic posts.Show Notes:L.A.
