California's Top Two Primary, also known as a Jungle Primary, was approved by voters as Proposition 14 in 2010. Prop. 14 was promoted by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lt. Governor Abel Maldonado and endorsed by most major newspapers as a way to lessen partisanship and reduce gridlock by encouraging compromise. (We'll leave it to readers to decide if it has had the desired effect.) official opposition to Top Two was wide, if not deep: All of the state's registered political parties, from GOP to Greens, were opposed, as were organizations as diverse as the California State Firefighters, the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association and the United Nurses Associations. The Amendment passed by 8 points. Sixteen years later, California voters are beginning to sour on Top Two. Fears of a GOP - or Democratic - lockout in this year's race for governor have led many to call for a change. Recent polling by Capitol Weekly found the 79% of respondents wanted to revise or repeal the jungle primary. Longtime Democratic consultant Steve Maviglio has heeded that call, filing a ballot initiative proposing to repeal Prop. 14. Maviglio is no newcomer to this fight - he led the opposition to the 2010 amendment. Peter Schiff explains why gold's worst week since 1983 could be the best buying opportunity yet as inflation, war, and housing risks mount. Peter Schiff argues that the sharp collapse in gold and silver is being misread by traders who still believe hotter inflation and tougher Fed talk are bearish for precious metals. He says the real signal is the opposite: producer prices are reaccelerating, oil is surging because of the Iran war, the Fed is trapped, and real interest rates are set to fall as inflation outruns any politically tolerable rate response. He also links the selloff to a broader macro breakdown, including rising Treasury yields, a weakening labor market, an overvalued housing market, looming trouble for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, expanding war deficits, and renewed money printing ahead. Schiff's view is that the current pullback in gold, silver, and mining stocks is not the end of the bull market, but a rare buying opportunity before stagflation, de-dollarization, and a deeper dollar crisis push precious metals much higher.
Obviously Chris Hipkins would disagree, but Donald Trump surely wins the "crap week of the week" award, given his week has material outcomes for all of us and Hipkins' is just a personal mess gone ugly and public. The war itself doesn't appear to be any different at the end of week three than it was at the end of week two, or indeed week one. Every indication is Iran is being obliterated. They have three major kills and the fact we have yet to actually see and hear the new Supreme Leader indicates the suggestion he is dead, or disfigured, rings more true by the day. The attacks on Gulf facilities shows Iranian desperation. But the number of attacks continues to drop. The marines are on the way and the B2's are dropping the massive 5000kg bombs around the Strait of Hormuz to presumably clear the way for them. So, war wise there's nothing new to report. Trump could call it off any moment and claim victory, remembering claiming something is not always the reality. But, and it's a massive "but", he asked for help on the Strait and short of the French possibly helping, once it's all settled and the sun is out, he got nothing. He got worse than nothing – he got the middle finger. A world weary of his arrogance, threats and bullying told him to get stuffed. "It's not our problem.” At which point he went straight to his baby act of whining and bleating and moaning. The Strait is a problem and he made it so. Whether they never planned for it or thought about it doesn't matter because they created it and his voters are paying. They're paying a fortune for gas, the market is sinking, the two things he cares most about (the Dow and the bloke at the bowser) aren't working for him and that's why this thing will still end sooner rather than later. Small side note - when he says America doesn't need the Strait, half of America's generics medicine comes from India. India gets their material through the Gulf. There isn't an American not on a pill or potion. So he's hurt them at the pump, and he's hurt them at Walgreens. It's a disaster, so he has to fix it. They said it'll be over in 4-6 weeks. They still say 4-6 but it'll be more six, than four. But the stakes are too high, not in Iran, but in Ohio and Minnesota and Georgia. That's where the real war is. Jack Ohman has been a political cartoonist for 48 years; he got his start at the Minnesota Daily when he was still a college student, and at 19 he became the youngest-ever syndicated cartoonist in the United States. He has worked at major papers across the US, including The Detroit Free Press, The Oregonian and The Sacramento Bee, where in 2016 he won the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning. In a satirical take on recent events, white lesbians are portrayed as enduring an epically disastrous week marked by public humiliation and tragedy. It began with a high-profile incident in Minneapolis, where an affluent white liberal lesbian, part of a couple protesting an ICE operation, was fatally shot after allegedly attempting to drive through agents, sparking riots and backlash that painted activists as reckless "Karens." The survivor, a vocal butch partner, faced online mockery for her aggressive rhetoric and failure to de-escalate, turning her into a symbol of misguided entitlement. Adding insult, the popular TV series Landman aired an episode ruthlessly satirizing a non-binary, liberal "they/them" character—depicted as hostile, vegan, and anti-patriarchy—who gets embarrassed in a college dorm scene, subtly dunking on similar affluent progressive stereotypes. San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie took office one year ago this week after beating incumbent mayor London Breed and several sitting and former SF supervisors in what ended up as a wide open four-way race.
