The weird thing about Winston Peters is that, when he's overseas, he's all Henry Kissinger or Kofi Annan on it. The ultimate diplomat. But then he comes back here, goes through Customs, and turns into Nigel Farage. Which is why, on one hand, we shouldn't be all that surprised by the appalling things he said to Chinese-born Green MP Lawrence Xu-Nan. Comments which, quite rightly, are being described as racist. And which he needs to apologise for. Politicians across the political spectrum are saying the same thing - including some of his own coalition colleagues. National's Simeon Brown is one of them. Because, of course, telling someone to go back to where they came from is racist. It's also dumb, when this person you're accusing of only being here five minutes - as Winston Peters did - has lived here more than 30 years. Christopher Luxon, though, is being Christopher Luxon. At least he isn't taking Winston's side, but the strongest thing he seems too capable of saying is that Winston Peters has a long track record of making inappropriate comments. And that what he said was “unhelpful”. Which just plays into those tired old excuses that some people keep making for the NZ First leader. You know: “Oh, that's old Winston up to his usual tricks”. And, yes, he is up to his usual tricks. But is that an excuse for such appalling, antiquated behaviour? Not in my book. And that's why he has to apologise. He can't be sacked as Foreign Affairs Minister. So he has to apologise.So how this all started, is that Peters was speaking in Parliament's debating chamber and this Green MP - who was born in China and moved here when he was a child in 1994 - started a bit of the usual heckling that MPs on all sides of the House like to do. Peters was talking about the Covid inquiry and Lawrence Xu-Nan called out, asking if he was vaccinated.Winston wasn't happy about that and said: “Go back to your own country. You only came here just five minutes ago. Go back to your own country, that's where they lie like a flat fish. But they don't lie like that here, alright. This is what we call democracy.” Saying: “This is called a democracy, unlike what you're used to.” Not surprisingly, China isn't happy. And former Trade Minister and former Speaker of the House Sir Lockwood Smith says that's going to be a bit of a problem. Because China now knows how he feels about our biggest trading partner. The other thing, is that if racism isn't tolerated anywhere else - if it isn't tolerated at schools and universities and at workplaces - then why should it be tolerated at Parliament? Answer is: it shouldn't. What's more, the Human Rights Commissions says this on its website: “In 1972, New Zealand signed up to the UN's International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. This requires the government to take action to eliminate racism and racial discrimination and promote understanding between all races in Aotearoa New Zealand.” For now, Winston Peters is part of New Zealand's government - one of its most senior ministers - and, as part of that government, he is obliged to honour this commitment. And, instead of pushing back and saying that those of us who think he's behaving like an out-of-touch fossil are just pearl clutchers indulging in faux outrage, Winston Peters needs to pull his head in and apologise. EDITORIAL: Just imagine, for a second, if I sat behind this microphone this morning and the first caller, I repeated something like that to them. Imagine if I said to them, "go back to your own country". Not once, not twice, but three times. Imagine if I said they couldn't possibly understand democracy because they weren't born here, they were born somewhere else. I'd quite rightly be fired. There'd be outrage. I'd be on the front cover of the Post. I would be. There'd be calls for my organisation to do a public apology. Yet that is exactly what New Zealand First Leader Winston Peters said in Parliament toGreen MP Dr. Lawrence Xu-Nan. So when I saw this story yesterday, I genuinely worried whether I'd missed something. I thought to myself, boy, this is going to be an outcry, boy this is going to be big. Have suddenly world rules changed? Or do they just actually apply to some people? I don't want people jumping on me here and telling me that I'm having a crack at Winston Peters and this is all about me and Winston Peters. I'll be clear. I often agree with Winston Peters and on some issues I think he's 100% right. But that's not the point. The point is whether the standards we expect in public life apply equally to everyone in every situation. I've spent decades employing people in hospitality. I've had chefs and staff from all over the world. Like any employer, I've had disagreements and difficult conversations. But can you just imagine if I turned around to one of my chefs and said, "go back to your own country". You don't understand democracy, that's where they lie like a flat fish. Can you imagine what the Employment Relations Authority would have done to me? Once again, front page of the paper. I would have been dragged through the system and my reputation would be gone. Fortune and legal fees and quite possibly my business. No employer in New Zealand would get away with saying that to an employee. So why does it seem different when it's said by one of the country's most senior politicians? Does parliamentary privilege allow too much? Dr. Xu-Nan has lived in New Zealand since 1994. He arrived here as a child, went to school here. Yet Winston Peters told him to go back to your own country. Claimed he'd only been here 5 minutes, suggested he knew little about democracy because he was born in China and later doubled down outside the debating chamber calling him an "arrogant twit". Now forget about whether you like the Greens or Dr. Lawrence Xu-Nan. Forget about whether you vote Green, National, Labour or New Zealand First. Ask yourself one question. If another politician had said exactly those words about someone born overseas, would their reaction have been the same? Because it seems to me that we've reached a point where we can judge comments not by what is said, but who says them. Now, Parliament should be the place where ideas are challenged and politics are debated. It shouldn't be a matter where someone was born. If you've chosen New Zealand, made your life here and earned your place in Parliament, then challenge the arguments, not whether they belong here. For me, this isn't about Winston Peters. It's about consistency. Either go back to your own country as acceptable in New Zealand politics or it isn't. Either we have one standard for everyone or we don't. Maybe you'll tell me it was just the heat of parliamentary debate. Maybe you'll say he was justified and that's fine. But I look at this and think if almost anyone else had said those words, anyone, in a workplace, a school, a radio station, or even having a heated argument over something like road rage. I can't think of one negative impact people moving here from overseas have had on my life. Not one. I can tell you plenty of good things. But not anything negative. Which is why I'll never understand why immigrants get such a bad rap. It's an easy excuse, though. Not happy about something? Blame the immigrants. And it's NZ First's Shane Jones is talking the nonsense he is. Warning us of a “Butter chicken tsunami” of new immigrants if New Zealand goes ahead with this free trade agreement with India. NZ First is opposed to the agreement, because it says it doesn't cap the number of students who could come here from India. Which is an argument that has already been put to bed because there are no limitations on the number of international students who can come here from any country. Tell that to Shane Jones, though. But I'm with the Prime Minister, Christopher Luxon, who has hit back. He was asked about it at the media conference after yesterday's cabinet meeting. Initially, he was a bit wishy-washy. But then he let rip. Saying New Zealand is a better place because of immigration. Without immigration, a lot of things would struggle to keep going. People moving here fill labour shortages. Think of the nursing staff in the hospitals. Think of all those construction workers i see walking to work first thing in the morning. Think of all the people who have migrated here to work on our dairy farms. People move here to invest, as well. Think of the people from overseas who have started businesses or bought existing businesses. Think of the wealthy immigrants who have taken advantage of the golden visa scheme who are investing big money here. These are genuine benefits. Not to mention the benefit we all get from the extra diversity. Every time I go through town, I love the fact that I see the same mix of people I've seen in other cities around the world. Some people, though, seem to think that's a bad thing. These are generally the ones who will celebrate St Patrick's day - but won't want a bar of Diwali. But where are you on this one? Vice President Kamala Harris responded after racist remarks by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at a Trump rally. "And these Latinos, they love making babies too, just know that. They do. There's no pulling out. I don't know if you guys know this, but there's literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it's called Puerto Rico." In an ad, Harris said: "Puerto Ricans deserve a president who sees and invest in that strength. I will never forget what Donald Trump did and what he did not do when Puerto Rico needed a caring and a competent leader. Strath-Taieri board chair, Barry Williams, has been censured by Dunedin City Council for what it describes as a serious failure to uphold the standard of behaviour expected of an elected community representative. Checkpoint understands Barry Williams' racist outburst was directed at a female staff member at the Strath Taieri Hotel.
