Pourtant, plusieurs Protestants, particulièrement des plus jeunes, sont à la recherche de rites et de symboles forts pour marquer de moments spéciaux. Comment pouvons-nous offrir une expérience chrétienne progressiste qui va au-delà des clichés et des lieux communs ? Cette semaine, est-ce que les Protestants célèbrent le mercredi des Cendres? Super question, Stéphane! Bonjour à chacun, à chacune. Bonjour à toi Stéphane. Bonjour Joan. Une célébration qui attire des jeunes [Joan] Le mercredi des Cendres, pour moi, c'est un peu une redécouverte, depuis une quinzaine, vingtaine d'années, mais surtout ces dernières années. Je dois dire que l'année dernière, tout particulièrement, c'était un moment spécial. D'abord, j'avais pas mal de petits soucis. Voilà, voile pudique sur les petits soucis, mais il suffira de dire que toute ma famille était en France et moi, j'étais en Suisse, en train d'essayer de réfléchir à comment changer de pays, comment changer d'Église. Je crois que ça suffira pour résumer mes petits soucis. Je vivais alors dans la communauté Village Mosaïque, communauté méthodiste, multiculturelle, inclusive, féministe et urbaine à Lausanne. À la communauté méthodiste, on nous a proposé quelque chose de surprenant pour moi : un office du midi, un mercredi bien sûr. La ministre Erika Stalcup, qui est toujours là, toujours en poste, que je salue, s'est posé devant les grandes portes de cette communauté qui est sur plusieurs étages, une grande façade gothique. Souvent, les gens me disent, mais je ne vois pas où est cette église sur la place centrale de Lausanne, parce que c'est une énorme façade gothique et du coup, on ne la voit pas. Tu vois un peu le délire? C'est tellement massif qu'on se dit, c'est quoi? Je ne sais pas, je ne le vois pas. Erika était là, elle avait mis ses habits ecclésiastiques méthodistes, son étole, et puis elle tenait entre les mains un petit bol avec de la cendre, mais un petit peu agglomérée, un peu huileuse, pâteuse, et elle avait mis à côté un très joli petit écriteau qui disait « Vous pouvez venir et recevoir les cendres du mercredi des Cendres ». Cette place est extrêmement fréquentée, notamment par des personnes en situation de vulnérabilité, en situation de dépendance, d'addiction, avec des dealers qui viennent d'autres pays, qui passent et qui cherchent un peu des clientèles. Et puis aussi des familles, des gens, des étudiants. Les gens passaient, passaient, passaient, passaient. Et Erika restait là, je trouve comme un signe vivant, très bienveillant, avec le sourire. Elle proposait évidemment aussi d'aller à l'office qui avait lieu dans la grande chapelle méthodiste. Quelques personnes sont arrivées, à sa grande surprise, pour venir à cet office du midi. Et donc elle a dit « bon ben je monte, est-ce que tu veux bien tenir ma permanence encore 5-10 minutes? » Et puis est arrivé un petit garçon. Le petit garçon m'a dit « c'est quoi? » Alors je lui dis « ce sont les cendres du mercredi des Cendres ». C'est une façon de dire oui, j'ai envie de commencer un peu ce temps de Carême, ce temps où je vais réfléchir à ce que je fais, à ce que je pense, et je vais essayer de me mettre en relation avec Dieu. Si tu veux, tu peux faire une petite croix sur ta main, ou bien sur celle de ta maman, comme ça. Moi je ne touchais pas l'enfant. Alors il a dit à sa mère, « ah ça je veux faire maman. » Alors elle était toute contente et lui a donné sa main et lui a dessiné des trucs, je ne sais plus très bien quoi. C'était un tout joli moment. Après j'ai récupéré mes petites affaires, mes affichettes et je suis montée. Et c'est vrai qu'on a eu la surprise, alors là vraiment, c'était dingue, d'avoir plusieurs jeunes, donc des jeunes adultes, tu sais, les gens dont on se demande toujours comment on fait pour qu'ils viennent à l'église. On a eu la surprise que plusieurs jeunes viennent, parce qu'il y avait un office qui avait été annoncé, je ne sais plus dans quelle Église catholique et qui avait été finalement transféré le soir. Donc ces jeunes ont cherché une autre Église et nous ont trouvés. J'ai trouvé ça incroyable en fait, ce retour du mercredi des Cendres. Cette réinterprétation par ce petit garçon, et puis ensuite ces jeunes qui ont débarqué de nulle part et qui nous ont dit, ben oui, nous aussi on veut vivre quelque chose de fort, un geste rituel. On veut recevoir ces cendres sur notre main, sur notre front. Et voilà, je me dis que c'est beau, parce qu'on en a tout plein des traditions. On les a mises progressivement de côté parce qu'elles n'étaient peut-être plus adaptées. Et finalement, c'est par les nouvelles générations qu'elles vont être réinventées. Le mercredi des Cendres de mon enfance [Stéphane] C'est une très belle histoire. Tu parles de rituels. Moi aussi je vois ça, des générations plus jeunes que nous, si je peux dire. Des personnes à la recherche de rituels, de marqueurs, de saisons, de temps, de moments. Ça me fait penser à ma jeunesse. Je l'ai dit souvent : j'ai grandi Catholique romain, donc le mercredi des Cendres, c'était là. On allait à l'office du mercredi, mais c'est un peu flou dans ma tête, et pas parce que j'ai des problèmes de mémoire. C'est juste que ça n'était pas un moment fort de l'année liturgique. C'était quelque chose qu'on fait parce qu'on est pratiquant, parce qu'on suit le rite, parce que la tradition, parce que, parce que, parce que… Mais je n'ai pas souvenir de me dire « Ah oui, cette année-là, ou la liturgie, ou je me suis senti de telle, telle, telle manière lorsque je suis revenu de l'office. » Non. Je vois cette différence, et je vois comment cette jeunesse-là, peut-être parce qu'elle est dans un autre endroit, spirituellement, mentalement, émotivement, recherche justement des symboles, des rites. Oui, je vois ça beaucoup. Quand les influenceurs et influenceuses font de la promotion [Joan] Et d'ailleurs, pour 2025, les journaux, surtout religieux, ont parlé d'une influence historique. C'est-à-dire qu'en fait, il y a des offices de mercredi des Cendres où jusqu'à 200 jeunes ont débarqué. Alors bien entendu, on voit là l'effet des influenceuses, des influenceurs, des tiktokeurs, tiktokeuses, chrétiens, chrétiennes. Il y a lieu de se méfier aussi de tout ça, puisque par exemple en France, on sait qu'il y a Pierre-Édouard Stérin qui est un grand argentier catholique avec vraiment une intention de faire revivre un catholicisme traditionaliste aussi, avec toute cette traîne des midwives et tout. Donc voilà, il faut être très, très attentif, mais justement, puisqu'il y a là, on pourrait dire une tendance. Comment la vivrons-nous d'un point de vue protestant, progressiste, libéral? Et j'ai trouvé que cette offre, l'année dernière à Village Mosaïque, ouvrait des possibles dans cette présence gratuite. Une présence gratuite, une présence inconditionnelle au cœur de la cité. La difficulté à comprendre le mercredi des Cendres [Stéphane] Je ne peux pas dire qu'il y ait une longue tradition du mercredi décembre dans l'Église à laquelle j'appartiens, dans l'Église Unie du Canada. Ce n'est pas dans l'ADN. Oui, on y met de l'importance. On développe des liturgies qu'on met dans les cahiers de liturgie ou sur internet pour le mercrwedi des Cendres, des choses comme ça. Mais, j'ai toujours eu l'impression que c'était quelque chose, un peu comme un corps étranger. On essaie de faire de quoi, mais on dirait que c'est un peu forcé, pas naturel. Par exemple, les cendres… Tu parlais des cendres. Bon, moi, je suis habitué, encore une fois, du côté Catholique. Je ne dis pas que ce sont les experts, mais ils ont une longue tradition. J'arrivais dans des offices ou au collège théologique, soit que les cendres étaient sèches, secs, secs, secs, secs. C'était un peu comme mettre du sable. Ou bien, ils mettaient une quantité astronomique d'huile végétale que même après la douche, ça ne partait pas. Donc, on ne sait pas trop comment faire ça. Je me souviens, dans une de mes paroisses, j'ai essayé, année après année, de faire des offices. Je me suis dit, tiens, on va faire quelque chose d'inspiré de Taïzé… plus méditatif… mercredi des Cendres, il me semble que ça va bien. Ils n'étaient pas capables de comprendre le style de Taizé. Par exemple, je disais, on chante ce cantique de deux lignes jusqu'à temps qu'on ne chante plus. Là, il dit, oui, mais c'est quoi? C'est trois fois? Cinq fois? Puis là, je dis, non, c'est jusqu'à temps que ça arrête. Puis là, la chorale, où est-ce qu'on met la chorale? Je dis, non, vous vous asseyez avec les gens, dans l'église. J'ai l'impression que je parlais, je ne sais pas moi, en serbo-croate ou en martien. J'ai l'impression que je n'étais pas capable de communiquer cette essence-là de on marque un temps, on rentre dans le Carême. C'était très difficile. Les gens n'étaient pas de mauvaise volonté, mais c'était difficile pour eux d'assimiler ce concept-là. Le mercredi des Cendres en Alsace [Joan] Je trouve très intéressant que l'on compare un peu nos milieux de vie. On passe un peu de la théologie des milieux par rapport à comment est-ce qu'on vit et on traverse tous ces temps forts dans le calendrier liturgique. C'est vrai que le mercredi des Cendres, c'est quelque chose qui est vécu à la fois dans mes traditions espagnoles, catalanes et puis est de l'Espagne, et à la fois bien sûr en Alsace. On peut dire que c'est franchement germanique en Alsace. Le mercredi des Cendres reprend un certain nombre de caractéristiques qu'on utilise aussi en Allemagne. C'est après ce Mardi gras qui semble pourtant très, très catholique, mais qui aura aussi été fêté d'une façon ou d'une autre en mangeant des sortes de beignets. Même ici, en Suisse, on mange des merveilles qui sont des galettes de beignets très, très, très fines et saupoudrées de plein de sucre. Enfin, c'est délicieux! Même ici, on mange des merveilles, on mange des beignets en Alsace. C'est vrai qu'on pourrait penser que c'est plus Catholique, mais en fait, les Luthériens n'ont pas eu de problème à adopter ce genre de douceur. Et le mercredi, on doit manger beaucoup plus léger et on doit commencer à se préparer à rentrer dans le temps de Carême. On voit du côté germanique qu'il y a toutes sortes de traditions, un peu moins présentes en Alsace, mais quand même. Et tout ça, ça nous mènera à la semaine de la Passion, à ce qu'on appelle l'Oschterputz. Donc l'Oschterputz, c'est quand on nettoie la maison. Et là, on a un croisement avec les Juifs qui font aussi le grand nettoyage pour Pessah, pour ôter dans la maison tout ce qui est de l'ordre des résidus. Voilà, donc on s'allège. Ce mercredi des Cendres ouvre en fait un temps qui, en Alsace, est profondément interreligieux, interculturel. Je ne te dis même pas quand ça tombe en même temps que le ramadan, alors là tout le monde s'en donne à cœur joie. Le Carême dans le Carême... Voilà, on y va tous ensemble. Du coup, moi je viens avec cet a priori très positif sur ce Carême, qui serait finalement non pas un temps où on rentre dans une démarche d'autoflagellation. Mais un temps qui nous permet d'aller plus en profondeur sur certaines questions. Le Mardi gras, le carnaval et les crêpes avant le mercredi des Cendres [Stéphane] Tu parles du Mardi gras. C'est sûr qu'en Amérique du Nord, il a notre propre saveur. Le Mardi gras, c'est souvent associé à ce qui se passe à Nouvelle-Orléans, la Louisiane, parce qu'il y a le passé Catholique romain. Il y a les excès, et un côté, je dirais, un peu du carnaval. On y va à fond la caisse. En préparant cet épisode, j'ai trouvé une citation. Ça vient de Louis-Julien Larcher, au 19e siècle, qui dit : « Un Turc qui était passé à Paris le temps du carnaval racontait aux sultans à son retour à Constantinople que les Français devenaient fous en certains jours, mais qu'un peu de cendre qu'on leur appliquait sur le front les faisait rentrer dans le bon sens. » J'ai adoré ça. On est fou, on est dans le carnaval, on fait dans l'excès de bouffe et là, paf, un peu de cendres sur le front, paf, on devient sobre. Et maintenant, le carnaval est devenu un peu une fête de l'hiver ou un moyen de couper l'hiver ou de se réapproprier l'hiver. En Amérique du Nord, les anglophones, le Mardi gras, c'est la journée de la crêpe. Pancake Day. Au point où presque toutes les Églises que je connais ont cette activité de servir des crêpes. C'est une façon de lever des fonds et de faire une activité sociale. Venez manger des crêpes à votre église et pour un petit 10 dollars, on va accumuler de l'argent. Ce n'est pas à la Chandeleur ou un autre moment qu'on mange des crêpes, c'est le Mardi gras. Le carnaval pour les Protestants [Joan] C'est intéressant combien en Suisse, dont certains cantons sont franchement réformés, donc protestants, et bien certains de ces cantons, dont on pourrait penser qu'ils sont extrêmement austères, d'après un petit peu les stéréotypes qu'on se raconte, ont adopté le carnaval, mais alors avec une puissance formidable. Je pense à Genève, là j'ai vu quelques images où ils se lançaient des confettis à n'en plus finir. Je pense au carnaval de Bâle, qui est connu mondialement. Il y a des gens qui n'attendent que ça, qui n'attendent que les jours de carnaval. Ça commence au milieu de la nuit. Donc, il y a des billets de train spéciaux, il y a des annonces qui commencent à être faites partout. Tu peux gagner des tas de choses. Des fois, ils te distribuent même des saucisses dans la rue. Il y a des chars avec des saucisses offertes, c'est formidable. Parfois, on a oublié combien l'imprégnation, puisque les cantons sont les uns à côté des autres, il y en a 26, certains se disent plus réformés, d'autres plus catholiques, mais finalement quand quelque chose plaît aux gens, peu importe la confession, on l'adopte et on s'amuse avec. Mais le lendemain, ce qui est bien, c'est qu'il y a le mercredi des Cendres. Et ce mercredi des Cendres nous permet aussi de se reposer et de se remettre un petit peu en face d'un certain nombre de choses. C'est vrai que je suis un peu lasse des symboles classiques, je suis un peu lasse de l'eau, du feu, lumière, bougie, colombe. J'ai l'impression qu'on se répète des fois. Je ne sais pas si nos auditeurs, auditrices aussi, des fois, ont l'impression d'avoir été un peu au bout du symbolisme de toutes ces images. Eh bien depuis quelques années, la cendre me renouvelle et m'offre de nouvelles pistes de réflexion, notamment des pistes de réflexion féministes dont je pourrai parler aussi un petit peu plus tard. J'aimerais dire aussi que cette cendre, je trouve, fait un lien avec le charbon dont on a parlé, toi et moi, pour nos souvenirs de Noël, cet épisode un peu mignon, un peu léger qu'on s'est permis. On se rappelle que les Reyes, les rois, les rois mages, les mages, enfin voilà, apportent aussi du charbon aux enfants qui, soi-disant, n'auraient pas été sages. Mais en fait, c'est du charbon qui est délicieux parce que c'est fait maintenant avec du sucre. Et donc, en fait, on s'offre ça comme une friandise.   * Photo de Adrien Olichon, unsplash.com. C'est un extrait de l'expulsion du Jardin d'Éden, une sorte de proclamation de malédiction dans Genèse 3, 17 à 19. « Dieu dit à l'homme, tu as écouté la voix de ta femme, tu as mangé le fruit que je t'avais défendu, eh bien à cause de toi, le sol est maintenant maudit. Tu auras beaucoup de peine à en tirer de la nourriture pendant toute ta vie. Il produira pour toi des épines et des ronces. Tu devras manger ce qui pousse dans les champs. Tu gagneras ton pain à la sueur de ton front jusqu'à ce que tu retournes à la terre d'où tu as été tiré, car tu es poussière et tu retourneras à la poussière. » Donc, c'est quelque chose de très difficile. Je ne pourrais pas dire que Dieu maudit l'humanité, mais ce n'est pas la célébration. Ce n'est pas la joie. Ce n'est pas : « Bravo, mon homme, vas-y, va coloniser la terre tout seul. » Non, ça va être difficile. Ça va être du labeur jusqu'à temps que tu retournes à l'état primaire. Tu vas retourner dans le sol, dans la poussière. On utilise cette expression-là pour marquer le début du Carême. Oui, le Carême, comme je disais souvent, est perçu comme le début du temps où il faut être misérable. C'est le début du temps où il faut être malheureux. Il faut souffrir, il faut faire pénitence, il faut se priver. Mais je me demande toujours, est-ce que c'est ça que Dieu veut dans notre préparation vers la montée pascale? Je suis un peu toujours perplexe quand je réfléchis à ça, quand il y a ces expressions-là, quand il y a ces affirmations-là. Le mercredi des Cendres n'est pas une pratique méritoire [Joan] Ce que j'aime à propos du mercredi des Cendres, c'est effectivement cette notion de poussière, mais aussi le fait que normalement, la cendre, c'est celle des rameaux de l'année précédente, qu'on est censé avoir gardé ou brûlé en avance. Après, on ne sait pas trop si c'est ce que font chacun, chacune. Mais ce qui est certain, c'est qu'il y a un lien avec cette entrée de Jésus à Jérusalem, cette entrée incompréhensible, parfois incomprise aussi, le fait que les gens attendaient quelque chose de lui. Lui, il est arrivé vaguement triomphant. Ce n'était pas non plus un triomphalisme délirant. Et finalement, les gens se réjouissaient avec ces rameaux. On faisait un peu comme ça des bannières, des objets de joie. Puis alors, on brûle ces objets de joie pour nous rappeler justement ça, qu'on est poussière.  Alors il y a tout ce cycle qui est intéressant, Et finalement, on le sait, la poussière, la cendre, ça fertilise le sol, après ça fera pousser des rameaux. Alors voilà, c'est intéressant ce cycle, mais c'est vrai que si on utilise ce cycle pour culpabiliser les gens, si on utilise ce cycle pour écraser les gens, c'est qu'on n'a rien compris en fait, au cycle des rituels, à leurs potentiels restaurateurs. Pour moi c'est plutôt un feu qui brûle le rameau, c'est le feu de l'amour, et finalement qui permet à tout ce qui empêche de produire du fruit d'être transformé en autre chose. Alors, certains vont carrément parler de réduire en cendres tout ce qui est péché, puis c'est un petit peu là où on voudrait ne pas aller, toi et moi. Je reste aussi attachée à ce que dit Luther. Luther considère ça comme un adiaphoron, c'est-à-dire quelque chose qui est un signe, une fois de plus. C'est vrai, c'est un signe, le mercredi des Cendres, les cendres, cette croix sur le front ou sur la main, ou comme le petit garçon, ce petit dessin sur la main. C'est important de se rappeler que Luther n'était pas opposé à tout ça, mais qu'il ne voulait pas que ça devienne une pratique méritoire. Ce n'est pas un mérite en fait, on ne fait pas ça pour être bien vu de Dieu. On fait ça parce qu'on a discerné, à la fois que ça nous fait vivre un temps communautaire, ça, c'est toujours chouette, enfin je crois, moi j'aime bien, et ensuite que ça nous permet d'avancer dans notre vie de foi. Un rite comme ça devrait être uniquement là pour enseigner, rappeler notre fragilité, notre vulnérabilité, notre dépendance à la grâce. Qu'est-ce que tu en dis? Aller au-delà du geste [Stéphane] J'aime bien ce que tu dis parce que parfois, j'ai l'impression que ça ressemble un peu à un service au volant dans les chaînes de restauration rapide. J'ai même lu des articles qui parlaient de prêtres, de pasteurs qui, sur l'heure du midi, sortaient, se mettaient sur le coin d'une rue et les gens s'arrêtaient et faisaient l'imposition des cendres, rapidos. Moi je me demande, c'est quoi le sens de tout ça? Est-ce que c'est un peu comme un geste magique? Je prends deux secondes, le clergé me met un truc sur le front et je suis bon, je suis protégé, je suis correct. C'est supposé être, de mon point de vue, le début d'un cheminement, un moment marqueur de quelque chose et non pas quelque chose de dire « voilà, je le fais, je n'ai pas le choix et je m'attends à ce que la personne, le membre du clergé, la pasteure, le prêtre, peu importe, soit là. Je ne fais même pas l'effort d'aller à un office Non. Paf, paf, puis c'est fait. Le mercredi des Cendres du point de vue des théologies féministes [Joan] C'est pour ça que je te propose qu'on termine avec un petit peu de théologie féministe sur le mercredi des Cendres. J'ai fait mes petites recherches. Alors, ce qui est stimulant avec les théologies féministes, c'est qu'elles proposent toujours de reconsidérer les choses sous un autre angle, notamment liturgique et rituel. Là, vraiment, il y a beaucoup de ces théologiennes qui y réfléchissent. Et elles nous mettent plusieurs avertissements. D'abord, attention sur la culpabilité. Les femmes culpabilisent déjà assez depuis les mauvaises interprétations sur Ève. Voilà, on a ce qu'il nous faut. [Stéphane] Vous avez donné. [Joan] On a donné. Ensuite, comme on l'a dit un peu, ces réflexions sur la poussière, essayer de creuser ça. Se dire que c'est la matière de la création, c'est la mémoire de notre interdépendance les uns les unes aux autres. C'est le rappel que nous sommes des corps situés, que nous sommes traversés par l'histoire, le genre, la violence, mais aussi la résistance parce que si tu balances de la cendre sur quelqu'un, ça peut être carrément embêtant, même salissant, peut-être même immobilisant. Elles proposent, dans ce genre de journée un peu transcendante, un peu forte, un peu profonde, d'en profiter pour nommer les péchés systémiques : sexisme, racisme, violence sexuelle, domination, pauvreté… Reconnaître les complicités institutionnelles y compris avec les idées et ouvrir finalement un chemin de conversion sociale et politique. Alors je me dis, ce sont autant de chantiers intéressants, mais qu'on ne voudrait pas vivre tout seuls nous, les théologiens-théologiennes, les ministres dans notre coin. J'espère qu'on aura peut-être des messages et des interpellations qui nous viendront pour imaginer ensemble des liturgies de mercredi des Cendres. Ronald Collins, Vicar of St. Peter and St. Paul's church in Olney, challenging their women to race against women of Liberal. Like in Olney, the traditional prize of the race is the “Kiss of Peace” from the verger (bellringer). It is still the only race of its kind on the planet. Pancake Day is also known as Shrove Tuesday, which marks the day before the start of Lent on the Christian calendar. The date changes every year, as it depends on when Easter falls.    According to Christian tradition, Pancake Day marks the last day of excess allowed before Lent. The following day is Ash Wednesday, and the beginning of 40 days of prayer and fasting. During Lent, practising Christians often give up something as a personal sacrifice to remember the forty days Jesus spent in the desert. Frustrated Natasha thinks Emma's wasting her time pursuing the water company when she should be focusing her efforts increasing footfall at the Tearoom. Later she apologises for being snippy, admitting she's worried. They're losing money and it's demoralising. She's pleased to see Kirsty, joking she's at least one paying customer. Kirsty wonders whether Natasha and Tom have had a chance to progress the house purchase. Natasha promises they'll all sit down together soon. Her priority currently is getting the business back on a firm footing. Emma suggests a Pancake Day initiative, and after some debate they settle on a pancake eating contest. What have they got to lose? Azra confides to Lynda there's no chance they'll be back in their own house in time for Ramadan – the house smells and the utility room is still damp. Kirsty reports she's got a professional company in to clean her house. They're doing a complete refit. She can't afford to wait, she just needs the house sold. Later Azra explains to interested Lynda how she manages her and the family's fasting arrangements, admitting that this year will be particularly challenging with all the stress of the house. Lynda suggests contacting Justin to see if he can advise on who should take responsibility for the sewage issues. Meanwhile she offers Azra the use of her kitchen as much as she needs it – she and Robert will work round her. In a moment of inspiration Lynda offers to fast alongside Azra so that they're synchronised.

Kewanee Kiwanis Pancake Day is set for April 6th at the Kewanee United Methodist. Kiwanis Pancake Day is a tradition over 70 years and it continues to be the most important fundraiser of the year for Kewanee Kiwanis. Jolene Efnor and Samantha Rux joined Wake Up Tri-Counties this morning to talk about Pancake Day, what it means for the community, and how it helps kids learn about serving their community.
