Shari's Restaurants abruptly closed all Oregon locations over the weekend. The Beaverton-based chain faced mounting financial problems, including eviction notices, unpaid bills and back taxes. “I can confirm that at this time that all Oregon Shari's restaurants are closed,” Sam Borgese, CEO of Gather Holdings LLC, parent company of Shari's Management Corporation, wrote to the Oregon Lottery in an October 21 email obtained through a public records request.
Oregon's favorite family-style restaurant Shari's, which has been around since 1978, made a shocking announcement yesterday. This all started from a tip from the Oregon Lottery.
Last month, watchdog reporter Ted Sickinger published an in-depth article examining a loophole in the Oregon Lottery's rules. In Oregon, it is perfectly legal to re-sell your winning lottery ticket at a discount, allowing the buyer to claim the prize. Why would anyone do this? Well, if they wanted to avoid having the state seize part of their winnings for taxes or back child support, for example. And why would the state allow this? Lottery officials told Sickinger they were aware of the practice of “discounting” and despite the fact other states have moved to close down similar schemes elsewhere nothing had been done in Oregon to prohibit the workaround. Sickinger joined Editor Therese Bottomly on “Beat Check with The Oregonian” to talk about how he got onto the story and how he tracked down participants willing to talk with him. He also talked about reaction to his piece. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Little oversight, a disorganized office and an uncertain future are just a few issues plaguing the Oregon Racing Commission, a state audit finds. The agency, which oversees animal racing in the state, generates little state revenue compared to the Oregon Liquor & Cannabis Commission and the Oregon Lottery. Ian Green is the audit manager with the Oregon Secretary of State’s Audits Division. He joins us to share his team's findings.
The latest expansion of our Career and College Pathways work is ensuring that elementary students are exposed to and gain awareness of the opportunities that await them as they progress through their PK-12 experience. Over the next three years, this will be accomplished by providing every elementary school with age-appropriate career kits for each grade level. Included in the kits are activities related to the career, culturally-relevant texts with diverse characters, and career-related realia. The Hillsboro Schools Foundation is partnering with HSD to make these kits a reality, and are calling their fundraising effort ¡Imagina Tu Aventura! Or Imagine Your Adventure!. In late August, Foundation staff and volunteers gathered at Atfalati Ridge Elementary School to put together the first round of kits for grades K, 1, and 3, and help deliver them to schools. Our featured staff member is Laury Rodriguez from Liberty High School. She has been named one of sixteen regional finalists for the 2022-23 Oregon Teacher of the Year Award! A Liberty High School student herself, Laury returned to the school as a family outreach liaison and bilingual assistant in 2015 after graduating from Portland State. Since earning her Master's degree in 2019, she has served Liberty students by teaching Math, Science, Dual Language, and AVID. She also advises the MEChA Club and has taught summer school, working to develop and align a program that is responsive to student needs. Laury was recognized during an all-school assembly at Liberty on Friday, September 16th. Representatives from the Oregon Lottery - one of the sponsors of the Oregon Teacher of the Year Program - were on hand to present her with a $1,000 check and a banner announcing her regional finalist status. The 2022-23 Oregon Teacher of the Year winner will be announced in early October and we can't wait to hear the results. Way to go, Laury! You make us Proud to be HSD! Our bond update is on the construction progress at Elementary School 29 in South Hillsboro. Beginning last week, steel posts are now being erected on the foundation, starting the building of the school structure itself. Keep track via cameras on site that provide near real-time views of the work on the site; updated every 15 minutes, you can go back in time or view the time-lapse. Project photos and other archives are also posted to hillsboro-bond.org. Hot News is produced and emailed to HSD families and staff each week school is in session. ESOL News Oregon, by Timothy Krause Text of article: (FEBRUARY 11, 2019) Not everyone wins the lottery. But when you do, you have to make a big decision. What do you do with the prize money? It might be hard to choose. It was easy for Victor Salazar. He lives in Salem. He recently a lottery game. He will receive more than $45,000. He knew immediately what to do. “My father needs a liver transplant and insurance won’t cover it,” Salazar says. “This money is going to help him pay for the transplant he needs.” The liver is an organ in the middle of our bodies. It has many important jobs. For example, the liver makes bile. This is a liquid that helps digestion. The liver also makes and stores glucose. That is a sugar that our bodies use for energy. The liver removes wastes from our blood. A liver transplant can save lives. Doctors remove the old liver. The replace it with a new liver. The new liver comes from a living person or someone who recently died. There were about 7,200 liver transplants in the U.S. in 2014. About 330 livers came from living donors. Nearly 15,000 people were still waiting for a liver transplant at that time. Oregon citizens voted to create the lottery in 1984. The Oregon Lottery earns a lot of money for the state -- over $11 billion ($11,000,000,000) since 1985. That means it is the second largest source of money for the state budget Only personal income tax bring in more money. The money is used for many things. These include state parks, the environment, schools, and services for veterans. Read by Eric Dodson. CC BY-NC-SA. From ESOL News Oregon by Timothy Krause.
